Sins for which people must give an offering

5 A person may know about something that is wrong. He may not speak about it at a public meeting. That person is sinning.

2 God has said that some animals and insects are not clean. A person may touch a dead animal or an insect like that. If he does, he is doing something wrong. It is a sin even if he did not really want to touch it.

3 A person may touch something that another person has made bad. If he does, he is doing something wrong. He might not know that it is bad, but he is still doing a wrong thing.

4 A person is doing a wrong thing if he says any careless promise. The promise might be good or bad. People will tell him that he has not obeyed God's rules. Then he will know that he has sinned.

5 A person must tell the priest if he has done any of these things. 6 He must give a sheep or a goat for a sin offering. Then the Lord will not be angry with him. The priest will kill the animal as a sacrifice to atone for that sin.

What the people should do if they do not have much money

7 A person may not have money to buy a sheep or a goat. If he does not, he must buy two doves or two pigeons. [ a ] He must give them to the Lord . One bird will be a sin offering. The second bird will be a burnt offering.

8 The priest will bring one of the birds to the altar. It is the sin offering. He will break the neck of the bird, but he will not pull the head off. 9 He will shake some of the blood onto the side of the altar. He will pour the blood that he did not shake onto the floor. He must pour it in front of the altar. 10 The priest will burn the other bird. God will not be angry with the man when the priest does this.

11 A person may not have money to buy two doves or two pigeons. If he does not, he must give a tenth of an ephah (about two litres) of flour. He must not put oil or incense on the flour because it is a sin offering. 12 He must take it to the priest. The priest will burn some of the flour on the altar as a special part of the flour. It is a sin offering to the Lord . 13 He will forgive the person when the priest does this. The flour that he did not burn is like the grain offering. It belongs to the priests.” ’

The gift to the Lord when a person does wrong things

14 The Lord said to Moses, 15 ‘If a person does not obey the Lord 's holy rules he is sinning. He must give a male sheep to the Lord . He must do this even if he did not know that he had sinned. It is a gift to the Lord to pay for his sins. It must be a perfect male animal. It must be worth the correct amount of money. 16 He must also give money worth one fifth more. The person must give the sheep and the money to the priest. The priest will sacrifice the sheep. It is an atonement for the wrong things that the person has done. God will forgive the person.

17 A person might do wrong things against the Lord . But the person might not know that they were wrong. He is sinning. 18 When he knows about it, he must bring a sheep to the priest. The animal must be a perfect male. The sheep must be worth the right amount of money. The priest will give the sheep to the Lord. It will be an atonement for the wrong things that the person has done. Then the Lord will forgive the person. 19 The sheep is an offering because the person did not obey the Lord .’

Footnotes

  1. 5:7 Doves and pigeons are birds that God let people eat.

Different Accidental Sins

5 “You might be called as a witness and take an oath to tell the truth. If you saw something or knew something but did not tell it, you are guilty of doing wrong and must bear the responsibility for your guilt.

2 “You might touch something unclean. It might be the dead body of any kind of animal. You might not know that you touched these things, but you will still become unclean and must pay a fine.

3 “You might touch any of the many things that can make a person unclean. You might touch something unclean, but not know about it. When you learn that you have touched something unclean, you must pay a fine.

4 “You might make a quick promise to do something—it makes no difference if it is bad or good. People make many kinds of quick promises. You might make such a promise and forget it. [ a ] When you remember [ b ] your promise, you must pay a fine because you did not keep it. 5 If you are guilty of any of these things, you must confess whatever you did wrong. 6 Then you must bring your guilt offering to the Lord for the sin you did. You must bring a female lamb or a female goat as a sin offering. The priest will do this to make you pure from your sin.

7 “If you cannot afford a lamb, you must bring two doves or two young pigeons to the Lord . These will be the guilt offering for your sin. One bird must be for a sin offering, and the other must be for a burnt offering. 8 Take them to the priest. First, the priest will offer one bird for the sin offering. The priest will pull the bird’s head from its neck but he will not pull it off completely. 9 The priest will sprinkle the blood from the sin offering on the side of the altar. Then he will pour out the rest of the blood at the base of the altar. It is a sin offering. 10 Then he will offer the second bird according to the rules for a burnt offering. The priest will do this to make you pure from the sin you did, and God will forgive you.

11 “If you cannot afford two doves or two pigeons, you must bring 8 cups [ c ] of fine flour as your sin offering. You must not put oil or frankincense on the flour because it is a sin offering. 12 You must bring the flour to the priest. The priest will take a handful of the flour as the memorial offering and bring it to the altar as a gift to the Lord . It is a sin offering. 13 The priest will do this to make you pure, and God will forgive you. The part that is left will belong to the priest, just as the regular grain offering.”

14 The Lord gave this command to Moses for the people: 15 “You might promise to give something to the Lord . You might sin against me without meaning to by not giving what you promised. If you do that, you must bring a ram that has nothing wrong with it (or the same amount in silver using the official measure) as a guilt offering. 16 You must give what you promised and add one-fifth of that amount as a fine. Give it to the priest and he will use the ram to make you pure, and God will forgive you.

17 “If you sin and break any of the commands that the Lord said must not be done, you are guilty. Even if you did not know about it, you are still responsible for your sin. 18 You must bring a ram that has nothing wrong with it (or the same amount in silver) to the priest. The priest will offer the ram, and God will forgive you for the sin you did without knowing it. 19 You are guilty, and you must pay the guilt offering to the Lord .”

Footnotes

  1. Leviticus 5:4 forget it Literally, “it is hid from him.”
  2. Leviticus 5:4 remember Literally, “know of.”
  3. Leviticus 5:11 8 cups Literally, “1/10 of an ephah” (2.2 l).

5 And if a soul sin, and hear the voice of swearing, and is a witness, whether he hath seen or known of it; if he do not utter it, then he shall bear his iniquity.

2 Or if a soul touch any unclean thing, whether it be a carcase of an unclean beast, or a carcase of unclean cattle, or the carcase of unclean creeping things, and if it be hidden from him; he also shall be unclean, and guilty.

3 Or if he touch the uncleanness of man, whatsoever uncleanness it be that a man shall be defiled withal, and it be hid from him; when he knoweth of it, then he shall be guilty.

4 Or if a soul swear, pronouncing with his lips to do evil, or to do good, whatsoever it be that a man shall pronounce with an oath, and it be hid from him; when he knoweth of it, then he shall be guilty in one of these.

5 And it shall be, when he shall be guilty in one of these things, that he shall confess that he hath sinned in that thing:

6 And he shall bring his trespass offering unto the Lord for his sin which he hath sinned, a female from the flock, a lamb or a kid of the goats, for a sin offering; and the priest shall make an atonement for him concerning his sin.

7 And if he be not able to bring a lamb, then he shall bring for his trespass, which he hath committed, two turtledoves, or two young pigeons, unto the Lord ; one for a sin offering, and the other for a burnt offering.

8 And he shall bring them unto the priest, who shall offer that which is for the sin offering first, and wring off his head from his neck, but shall not divide it asunder:

9 And he shall sprinkle of the blood of the sin offering upon the side of the altar; and the rest of the blood shall be wrung out at the bottom of the altar: it is a sin offering.

10 And he shall offer the second for a burnt offering, according to the manner: and the priest shall make an atonement for him for his sin which he hath sinned, and it shall be forgiven him.

11 But if he be not able to bring two turtledoves, or two young pigeons, then he that sinned shall bring for his offering the tenth part of an ephah of fine flour for a sin offering; he shall put no oil upon it, neither shall he put any frankincense thereon: for it is a sin offering.

12 Then shall he bring it to the priest, and the priest shall take his handful of it, even a memorial thereof, and burn it on the altar, according to the offerings made by fire unto the Lord : it is a sin offering.

13 And the priest shall make an atonement for him as touching his sin that he hath sinned in one of these, and it shall be forgiven him: and the remnant shall be the priest's, as a meat offering.

14 And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,

15 If a soul commit a trespass, and sin through ignorance, in the holy things of the Lord ; then he shall bring for his trespass unto the Lord a ram without blemish out of the flocks, with thy estimation by shekels of silver, after the shekel of the sanctuary, for a trespass offering.

16 And he shall make amends for the harm that he hath done in the holy thing, and shall add the fifth part thereto, and give it unto the priest: and the priest shall make an atonement for him with the ram of the trespass offering, and it shall be forgiven him.

17 And if a soul sin, and commit any of these things which are forbidden to be done by the commandments of the Lord ; though he wist it not, yet is he guilty, and shall bear his iniquity.

18 And he shall bring a ram without blemish out of the flock, with thy estimation, for a trespass offering, unto the priest: and the priest shall make an atonement for him concerning his ignorance wherein he erred and wist it not, and it shall be forgiven him.

19 It is a trespass offering: he hath certainly trespassed against the Lord .

The Law of Guilt Offerings

5 ‘Now if a person sins after he hears a [ a ] public ( A ) order to testify when he is a witness, whether he has seen or otherwise known, if he does not tell it , then he will bear his punishment. 2 Or if a person touches ( B ) any unclean thing, whether a carcass of an unclean animal, or the carcass of unclean cattle, or a carcass of unclean swarming things, though it is hidden from him and he is unclean, then he will be guilty. 3 Or if he touches human uncleanness, of whatever sort his uncleanness may be with which he becomes unclean, and it is hidden from him, and then he comes to know it , he will be guilty. 4 Or if a person ( C ) swears thoughtlessly with his lips to do evil or to do good, in whatever matter people speak thoughtlessly with an oath, and it is hidden from him, and then he comes to know it , he will be guilty of one of these things. 5 So it shall be when he becomes guilty of one of these things, that he shall ( D ) confess that in which he has sinned. 6 He shall also bring his guilt offering to the Lord for his sin which he has [ b ] committed, ( E ) a female from the flock, a lamb or a [ c ] goat as a sin offering. So the priest shall make atonement on his behalf for his sin.

7 ‘But if [ d ] he cannot afford a lamb, then he shall bring to the Lord his guilt offering for that in which he has sinned, two turtledoves or two young doves, ( F ) one as a sin offering and the other as a burnt offering. 8 He shall bring them to the priest, who shall first offer that which is for the sin offering, and shall pinch off its head at the front of its neck, but he ( G ) shall not sever it . 9 He shall also sprinkle some of the blood of the sin offering ( H ) on the side of the altar, while the rest of the blood shall be drained out ( I ) at the base of the altar: it is a sin offering. 10 The second he shall then prepare as a burnt offering ( J ) according to the ordinance. ( K ) So the priest shall make atonement on his behalf for his sin which he has [ e ] committed, and it will be forgiven him.

11 ‘But ( L ) if his [ f ] means are insufficient for two turtledoves or two young doves, then for his offering for that which he has sinned, he shall bring the tenth of an [ g ] ephah of fine flour as a sin offering; ( M ) he shall not put oil on it or place incense on it, for it is a sin offering. 12 He shall bring it to the priest, and the priest shall take his handful of it as its memorial portion and offer it up in smoke on the altar, [ h ] with the offerings of the Lord by fire: it is a sin offering. 13 So the priest shall make atonement for him concerning his sin which he has [ i ] committed from ( N ) one of these, and it will be forgiven him; then ( O ) the rest shall become the priest’s, like the grain offering.’”

14 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 15 ( P ) If a person acts unfaithfully and sins ( Q ) unintentionally against the Lord s holy things, then he shall bring his ( R ) guilt offering to the Lord : ( S ) a ram without defect from the flock, according to your assessment in silver by shekels, in terms of the ( T ) shekel of the sanctuary, as a guilt offering. 16 And ( U ) he shall make restitution for that which he has sinned against the holy thing, and shall add to it a fifth part of it and give it to the priest. ( V ) The priest shall then make atonement for him with the ram of the guilt offering, and it will be forgiven him.

17 “Now if a person sins and does any of the things [ j ] which the Lord has commanded not to be done, ( W ) though he was unaware, he is still guilty and shall bear his punishment. 18 He is then to bring to the priest ( X ) a ram without defect from the flock, according to your assessment, as a guilt offering. So the priest shall make atonement for him concerning his sin which he committed ( Y ) unintentionally and did not know it , and it will be forgiven him. 19 It is a guilt offering; he was certainly guilty before the Lord .”

5 “‘If anyone sins because they do not speak up when they hear a public charge to testify ( A ) regarding something they have seen or learned about, they will be held responsible. ( B )

2 “‘If anyone becomes aware that they are guilty—if they unwittingly touch anything ceremonially unclean (whether the carcass of an unclean animal, wild or domestic, or of any unclean creature that moves along the ground) ( C ) and they are unaware that they have become unclean, ( D ) but then they come to realize their guilt; 3 or if they touch human uncleanness ( E ) (anything that would make them unclean) ( F ) even though they are unaware of it, but then they learn of it and realize their guilt; 4 or if anyone thoughtlessly takes an oath ( G ) to do anything, whether good or evil ( H ) (in any matter one might carelessly swear about) even though they are unaware of it, but then they learn of it and realize their guilt— 5 when anyone becomes aware that they are guilty in any of these matters, they must confess ( I ) in what way they have sinned. 6 As a penalty for the sin they have committed, they must bring to the Lord a female lamb or goat ( J ) from the flock as a sin offering [ a ] ; ( K ) and the priest shall make atonement ( L ) for them for their sin.

7 “‘Anyone who cannot afford ( M ) a lamb ( N ) is to bring two doves or two young pigeons ( O ) to the Lord as a penalty for their sin—one for a sin offering and the other for a burnt offering. 8 They are to bring them to the priest, who shall first offer the one for the sin offering. He is to wring its head from its neck, ( P ) not dividing it completely, ( Q ) 9 and is to splash ( R ) some of the blood of the sin offering against the side of the altar; ( S ) the rest of the blood must be drained out at the base of the altar. ( T ) It is a sin offering. 10 The priest shall then offer the other as a burnt offering in the prescribed way ( U ) and make atonement ( V ) for them for the sin they have committed, and they will be forgiven. ( W )

11 “‘If, however, they cannot afford ( X ) two doves or two young pigeons, ( Y ) they are to bring as an offering for their sin a tenth of an ephah [ b ] ( Z ) of the finest flour ( AA ) for a sin offering. They must not put olive oil or incense on it, because it is a sin offering. 12 They are to bring it to the priest, who shall take a handful of it as a memorial [ c ] portion ( AB ) and burn it on the altar ( AC ) on top of the food offerings presented to the Lord . It is a sin offering. 13 In this way the priest will make atonement ( AD ) for them for any of these sins they have committed, and they will be forgiven. The rest of the offering will belong to the priest, ( AE ) as in the case of the grain offering. ( AF ) ’”

The Guilt Offering

14 The Lord said to Moses: 15 “When anyone is unfaithful to the Lord by sinning unintentionally ( AG ) in regard to any of the Lord ’s holy things, they are to bring to the Lord as a penalty ( AH ) a ram ( AI ) from the flock, one without defect and of the proper value in silver, according to the sanctuary shekel. [ d ] ( AJ ) It is a guilt offering. ( AK ) 16 They must make restitution ( AL ) for what they have failed to do in regard to the holy things, pay an additional penalty of a fifth of its value ( AM ) and give it all to the priest. The priest will make atonement for them with the ram as a guilt offering, and they will be forgiven.

17 “If anyone sins and does what is forbidden in any of the Lord ’s commands, even though they do not know it, ( AN ) they are guilty and will be held responsible. ( AO ) 18 They are to bring to the priest as a guilt offering ( AP ) a ram from the flock, one without defect and of the proper value. In this way the priest will make atonement for them for the wrong they have committed unintentionally, and they will be forgiven. ( AQ ) 19 It is a guilt offering; they have been guilty of [ e ] wrongdoing against the Lord .” ( AR )
