- Leviticus Chapter 25
25 Moses was on Sinai's mountain. The Lord spoke to him there. 2 The Lord said, ‘Speak to Israel's people. They will go into the land that I will give to them. Then the land must have a Sabbath rest to the Lord . 3 They can plant seeds in the fields for six years. They can cut the leaves of the plants and they can harvest the fruit for six years. 4 In the seventh year, the land must have a rest. They must not plant seeds in the fields or cut the leaves. 5 They must not harvest fruit or grain. The land must have a year for rest. 6 All of the people can eat anything that grows by itself in the Sabbath year. That will be food for you and for your servants and for your animals. And other people who live among you can eat it. 7 The wild animals also can eat anything that grows by itself in the Sabbath year.
8 The people must count seven lots of Sabbath years. That is 49 years. 9 In the 50th year they must make loud music. They must blow trumpets on the tenth day of the seventh month. That is the Day of Atonement. They must blow the trumpet through all the country. 10 The year will be special. It is a Jubilee year. It is a time for every one of my people to become free. Everyone can return to his own land and to his family. 11 The 50th year is a Jubilee year. The people must not plant any seed in the fields. They must not harvest anything that grows by itself on the bushes. 12 It is a Jubilee year for the people. And they can eat only food that they take from the fields.
13 In the Jubilee year every person must return to the land of his family.
14 If the people buy and sell land from each other, they must be honest with each other. 15 The person who is selling the land will decide the price. He must count the number of years until the next Jubilee year. 16 When there are many years, the price must be big. When there are few years, the price must be small. The number of years that the land will give food to eat is what is important. 17 Be honest with each other and respect God. I am the Lord your God.
18 The people must obey God's rules. If they do, they will be safe. 19 You will be able to grow food on the land. And the people will have plenty to eat. They will be safe. 20 The people may ask what they will eat in the seventh year. They will not have planted any seeds. 21 God will cause a lot of food to grow in the sixth year. They will have food for three more years. 22 When a person plants seed in the eighth year he will still be eating the crops that he planted in the sixth year. The next time he will harvest the plants from the fields will be in the ninth year.
23 The people must never sell the land for all time. The land belongs to God. He has said that the people can live on it. 24 A person may buy land. But he must remember that he may have to sell it back to the seller.
25 If a man becomes poor, he can sell some of his land. A person from his family must buy the land back for the man. 26 But the man might not have any family. If he stops being poor, he can buy the land back. 27 He must count how many years until the next Jubilee year. He must pay the right amount of money for the land. Then he can live on the land again. 28 If the man is too poor to buy the land back, it will belong to the other person. It will belong to the other person until the next Jubilee year. He must return it to the poor man in the Jubilee year.
29 A man may sell a house in a city with walls. For one year after he sells it, he can buy it back. 30 If the man does not buy back the house, it will belong to the other person and his sons. It will belong to them for all time. They will not have to return it in the Jubilee year. 31 If the house is in a village, a person can buy it back. If he does not buy it back, they will return it to him in the Jubilee year.
32 The Levites (people from the family of Levi) can buy back the houses in their towns. 33 In the Jubilee year, the Levites must get back the houses that they sold. Their towns belong to the Levites. 34 The Levites must not sell the fields that belong to their towns. God gave to them their towns and cities to live in for all time.
35 An Israelite may become poor. He may not be able to feed his family. You must help him. You would help a visitor or a foreigner in the same way. You must help the man so that he can continue to live among you. 36 The man must not pay back more than you gave to him. You must obey your God. 37 The person who is feeding the man might give money or food to him. He must not ask for more back than he gave. 38 I am the Lord your God who brought you out of Egypt. I brought you into this land to be your God.
39 If an Israelite becomes poor, he might sell himself to you. But he must not work for you as a slave. You must pay him to work as your servant. 40 He must work for you until the next Jubilee year. 41 In the Jubilee year, you will make him free. He and his children can go back to his own home and family. 42 Israel's people belong to God. I took them out of Egypt. They must not be slaves. 43 You must be kind to all Israelites. Remember to obey your God.
44 Israel's people can buy male and female slaves. Those slaves must come from other countries. 45 And Israelites can buy people from other countries who live among them. They may have children who were born in your land. You can buy them. They will become slaves. 46 You can give the slaves to your children when you die. But you must rule Israel's people in a kind way.
47 A person from another country may become rich. Then he might buy an Israelite who became poor. But the poor man can buy himself back at any time. 48 A person from the family of the poor man can buy him back. 49 A brother or a cousin of the poor man can buy him back. If the poor man becomes rich, he can pay to make himself free. 50 The man and the person who bought him must count the time until the Jubilee year. The man must pay the right amount of money to be free. 51 The Jubilee year may be many years away. If it is, the man must pay a lot of money to be free. 52 There may be a few years until the Jubilee year. If there are, he has to pay only a small amount of money to be free. 53 The person who has bought the man must pay him each year. You must cause the rich man to be kind to the man.
54 Perhaps nobody will pay any money for the man. But the man who bought him must make him free in the Jubilee year. 55 Israel's people belong to me. I brought them out of Egypt. They are my servants. I am the Lord .
25 The Lord spoke to Moses at Mount Sinai. He said, 2 “Tell the Israelites: When you enter the land that I am giving to you, you must let the land have a special time of rest. This will be a special time of rest to honor the Lord . 3 You will plant seed in your field for six years. You will trim your vineyards for six years and bring in its fruits. 4 But during the seventh year, you will let the land rest. This will be a special time of rest to honor the Lord . You must not plant seed in your field or trim your vineyards. 5 You must not cut the crops that grow by themselves after your harvest. You must not gather the grapes from your vines that are not trimmed. The land will have a year of rest.
6 “The land will have a year of rest, but you will still have enough food. There will be enough food for your men and women servants. There will be food for your hired workers and for the foreigners living in your country. 7 And there will be enough food for your cattle and other animals to eat.
8 “You will also count seven groups of seven years. This will be 49 years. During that time there will be seven years of rest for the land. 9 On the Day of Atonement, you must blow a ram’s horn. That will be on the tenth day of the seventh month. You must blow the ram’s horn through the whole country. 10 You will make the 50th year a special year. You will announce freedom for everyone living in your country. This time will be called ‘Jubilee.’ Each of you will go back to your own property. [ a ] And each of you will go back to your own family. 11 The 50th year will be a special celebration [ b ] for you. Don’t plant seeds, don’t harvest the crops that grow by themselves, and don’t gather grapes from the vines that are not trimmed. 12 That year is Jubilee. It will be a holy time for you. You will eat the crops that come from the field. 13 In the year of Jubilee, you will go back to your own property.
14 “Don’t cheat your neighbors when you sell your land to them. Don’t cheat one another when you buy or sell land. 15 If you want to buy your neighbor’s land, count the number of years since the last Jubilee, and use that number to decide the right price. You are only buying the rights for harvesting crops until the next Jubilee. 16 If there are many years before the next Jubilee, the price will be high. If the years are few, the price will be lower. So your neighbor is really only selling a number of crops to you. At the next Jubilee, the land will again belong to that family. 17 You must not cheat each other. You must honor your God. I am the Lord your God.
18 “Remember my laws and rules. Obey them and you will live safely in your country. 19 And the land will produce good crops for you. Then you will have plenty of food, and you will live safely on the land.
20 “But maybe you will say, ‘If we don’t plant seeds or gather our crops, we will not have anything to eat during the seventh year.’ 21 I will order my blessing to come to you during the sixth year. The land will continue growing crops for three years. 22 When you plant in the eighth year, you will still be eating from the old crop. You will eat the old crop until the ninth year, when the crop you planted in the eighth year comes in.
23 “The land really belongs to me, so you cannot sell it permanently. You are only foreigners and travelers living on my land with me. 24 People might sell their land, but the family will always get their land back. 25 If someone in your country becomes very poor and must sell their property, a close relative must come and buy it back. 26 If there is not a close relative to buy back the land, the person might get enough money to buy it back. 27 Then the years must be counted since the land was sold. That number must be used to decide how much to pay for the land. The person must then buy back the land, and it will be their property again. 28 But if this first owner cannot find enough money to buy the land back, it will stay in the hands of the one who bought it until the year of Jubilee. Then during that special celebration, the land will go back to the first owner’s family. So the property will again belong to the right family.
29 “Anyone who sells a home in a walled city still has the right to get it back until a full year after it was sold. Their right to get the house back will continue one year. 30 But if the owner does not buy back the house before a full year is finished, the house that is in the walled city will belong to the one who bought it and to their descendants. The house will not go back to the first owner at the time of Jubilee. 31 Towns without walls around them will be treated like open fields. So houses built in these small towns will go back to the first owners at the time of Jubilee.
32 “But about the cities of the Levites: The Levites can buy back at any time their houses in the cities that belong to them. 33 If someone buys a house from a Levite, that house in the Levites’ city will again belong to the Levites at the time of Jubilee. This is because houses in Levite cities belong to those from the tribe of Levi. The Israelites gave these cities to the Levites. 34 Also, the fields and pastures around the Levite cities cannot be sold. They belong to the Levites forever.
35 “If anyone from your own country becomes too poor to support themselves, you must let them live with you like a visitor. 36 Don’t charge them any interest on money you might loan to them. Respect your God and let those from your own country live with you. 37 Don’t charge them interest on any money you lend them. And don’t try to make a profit from the food you sell them. 38 I am the Lord your God. I brought you out of the land of Egypt to give the land of Canaan to you and to become your God.
39 “If anyone from your own country becomes so poor that they must sell themselves to you, don’t make them work like slaves. 40 They will be like hired workers and visitors with you until the year of Jubilee. 41 Then they can leave you, take their children, and go back to their family. They can go back to the property of their ancestors, 42 because they are my servants. I brought them out of slavery in Egypt. They must not become slaves again. 43 You must not be a cruel master to them. You must respect your God.
44 “About your men and women slaves: You may get men and women slaves from the other nations around you. 45 Also, you may get children as slaves if they come from the families of the foreigners living in your land. These child slaves will belong to you. 46 You may even pass these foreign slaves on to your children after you die so that they will belong to them. They will be your slaves forever. You may make slaves of these foreigners. But you must not be a cruel master over your own brothers, the Israelites.
47 “Maybe a foreigner or visitor among you becomes rich. Or maybe someone from your own country becomes so poor that they sell themselves as slaves to a foreigner living among you or to a member of a foreigner’s family. 48 These people have the right to be bought back and become free. Someone from their own country can buy them back. 49 Or their uncle, their cousin, or one of their close relatives from their family can buy him back. Or if they get enough money, they can pay the money themselves and become free again.
50 “You must count the years from the time they sold themselves to the foreigner up to the next year of Jubilee. Use that number to decide the price, because really the person only ‘hired’ them for a few years. 51 If there are still many years before the year of Jubilee, the one sold must give back a large part of the price. It all depends on the number of years. 52 If only a few years are left until the year of Jubilee, the one who was sold must pay a small part of the original price. 53 But that person will live like a hired worker with the foreigner every year. Don’t let the foreigner be a cruel master over that person.
54 “Those who sold themselves will become free, even if no one buys them back. At the year of Jubilee, they and their children will become free. 55 This is because the Israelites are my servants. They are the servants who I brought out of slavery in Egypt. I am the Lord your God!
25 And the Lord spake unto Moses in mount Sinai, saying,
2 Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, When ye come into the land which I give you, then shall the land keep a sabbath unto the Lord .
3 Six years thou shalt sow thy field, and six years thou shalt prune thy vineyard, and gather in the fruit thereof;
4 But in the seventh year shall be a sabbath of rest unto the land, a sabbath for the Lord : thou shalt neither sow thy field, nor prune thy vineyard.
5 That which groweth of its own accord of thy harvest thou shalt not reap, neither gather the grapes of thy vine undressed: for it is a year of rest unto the land.
6 And the sabbath of the land shall be meat for you; for thee, and for thy servant, and for thy maid, and for thy hired servant, and for thy stranger that sojourneth with thee.
7 And for thy cattle, and for the beast that are in thy land, shall all the increase thereof be meat.
8 And thou shalt number seven sabbaths of years unto thee, seven times seven years; and the space of the seven sabbaths of years shall be unto thee forty and nine years.
9 Then shalt thou cause the trumpet of the jubile to sound on the tenth day of the seventh month, in the day of atonement shall ye make the trumpet sound throughout all your land.
10 And ye shall hallow the fiftieth year, and proclaim liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof: it shall be a jubile unto you; and ye shall return every man unto his possession, and ye shall return every man unto his family.
11 A jubile shall that fiftieth year be unto you: ye shall not sow, neither reap that which groweth of itself in it, nor gather the grapes in it of thy vine undressed.
12 For it is the jubile; it shall be holy unto you: ye shall eat the increase thereof out of the field.
13 In the year of this jubile ye shall return every man unto his possession.
14 And if thou sell ought unto thy neighbour, or buyest ought of thy neighbour's hand, ye shall not oppress one another:
15 According to the number of years after the jubile thou shalt buy of thy neighbour, and according unto the number of years of the fruits he shall sell unto thee:
16 According to the multitude of years thou shalt increase the price thereof, and according to the fewness of years thou shalt diminish the price of it: for according to the number of the years of the fruits doth he sell unto thee.
17 Ye shall not therefore oppress one another; but thou shalt fear thy God:for I am the Lord your God.
18 Wherefore ye shall do my statutes, and keep my judgments, and do them; and ye shall dwell in the land in safety.
19 And the land shall yield her fruit, and ye shall eat your fill, and dwell therein in safety.
20 And if ye shall say, What shall we eat the seventh year? behold, we shall not sow, nor gather in our increase:
21 Then I will command my blessing upon you in the sixth year, and it shall bring forth fruit for three years.
22 And ye shall sow the eighth year, and eat yet of old fruit until the ninth year; until her fruits come in ye shall eat of the old store.
23 The land shall not be sold for ever: for the land is mine, for ye are strangers and sojourners with me.
24 And in all the land of your possession ye shall grant a redemption for the land.
25 If thy brother be waxen poor, and hath sold away some of his possession, and if any of his kin come to redeem it, then shall he redeem that which his brother sold.
26 And if the man have none to redeem it, and himself be able to redeem it;
27 Then let him count the years of the sale thereof, and restore the overplus unto the man to whom he sold it; that he may return unto his possession.
28 But if he be not able to restore it to him, then that which is sold shall remain in the hand of him that hath bought it until the year of jubile: and in the jubile it shall go out, and he shall return unto his possession.
29 And if a man sell a dwelling house in a walled city, then he may redeem it within a whole year after it is sold; within a full year may he redeem it.
30 And if it be not redeemed within the space of a full year, then the house that is in the walled city shall be established for ever to him that bought it throughout his generations: it shall not go out in the jubile.
31 But the houses of the villages which have no wall round about them shall be counted as the fields of the country: they may be redeemed, and they shall go out in the jubile.
32 Notwithstanding the cities of the Levites, and the houses of the cities of their possession, may the Levites redeem at any time.
33 And if a man purchase of the Levites, then the house that was sold, and the city of his possession, shall go out in the year of jubile: for the houses of the cities of the Levites are their possession among the children of Israel.
34 But the field of the suburbs of their cities may not be sold; for it is their perpetual possession.
35 And if thy brother be waxen poor, and fallen in decay with thee; then thou shalt relieve him: yea, though he be a stranger, or a sojourner; that he may live with thee.
36 Take thou no usury of him, or increase: but fear thy God; that thy brother may live with thee.
37 Thou shalt not give him thy money upon usury, nor lend him thy victuals for increase.
38 I am the Lord your God, which brought you forth out of the land of Egypt, to give you the land of Canaan, and to be your God.
39 And if thy brother that dwelleth by thee be waxen poor, and be sold unto thee; thou shalt not compel him to serve as a bondservant:
40 But as an hired servant, and as a sojourner, he shall be with thee, and shall serve thee unto the year of jubile.
41 And then shall he depart from thee, both he and his children with him, and shall return unto his own family, and unto the possession of his fathers shall he return.
42 For they are my servants, which I brought forth out of the land of Egypt: they shall not be sold as bondmen.
43 Thou shalt not rule over him with rigour; but shalt fear thy God.
44 Both thy bondmen, and thy bondmaids, which thou shalt have, shall be of the heathen that are round about you; of them shall ye buy bondmen and bondmaids.
45 Moreover of the children of the strangers that do sojourn among you, of them shall ye buy, and of their families that are with you, which they begat in your land: and they shall be your possession.
46 And ye shall take them as an inheritance for your children after you, to inherit them for a possession; they shall be your bondmen for ever: but over your brethren the children of Israel, ye shall not rule one over another with rigour.
47 And if a sojourner or stranger wax rich by thee, and thy brother that dwelleth by him wax poor, and sell himself unto the stranger or sojourner by thee, or to the stock of the stranger's family:
48 After that he is sold he may be redeemed again; one of his brethren may redeem him:
49 Either his uncle, or his uncle's son, may redeem him, or any that is nigh of kin unto him of his family may redeem him; or if he be able, he may redeem himself.
50 And he shall reckon with him that bought him from the year that he was sold to him unto the year of jubile: and the price of his sale shall be according unto the number of years, according to the time of an hired servant shall it be with him.
51 If there be yet many years behind, according unto them he shall give again the price of his redemption out of the money that he was bought for.
52 And if there remain but few years unto the year of jubile, then he shall count with him, and according unto his years shall he give him again the price of his redemption.
53 And as a yearly hired servant shall he be with him: and the other shall not rule with rigour over him in thy sight.
54 And if he be not redeemed in these years, then he shall go out in the year of jubile, both he, and his children with him.
55 For unto me the children of Israel are servants; they are my servants whom I brought forth out of the land of Egypt: I am the Lord your God.
25 The Lord then spoke to Moses on Mount Sinai, saying, 2 “Speak to the sons of Israel and say to them, ‘When you come into the land which I am going to give you, then the land shall have a Sabbath to the Lord . 3 For ( A ) six years you shall sow your field, and for six years you shall prune your vineyard and gather in its produce, 4 but during ( B ) the seventh year the land shall have a Sabbath rest, a Sabbath to the Lord ; you shall not sow your field nor prune your vineyard. 5 You shall not reap your harvest’s [ a ] aftergrowth, and you shall not gather your grapes of untrimmed vines; the land shall have a sabbatical year. 6 ( C ) All of you shall have the Sabbath produce of the land as food; for yourself, your male and female slaves, and your hired worker and your foreign resident, those who live as strangers among you. 7 Even your cattle and the animals that are in your land shall have all its produce to eat.
8 ‘You are also to count off seven Sabbaths of years for yourself, seven times seven years, so that you have the time of the seven Sabbaths of years, that is , forty-nine years. 9 You shall then sound a ram’s horn [ b ] abroad on ( D ) the tenth day of the seventh month; on the Day of Atonement you shall sound a horn all through your land. 10 So you shall consecrate the fiftieth year and ( E ) proclaim [ c ] a release throughout the land to all its inhabitants. It shall be a jubilee for you, [ d ] and ( F ) each of you shall return to his own property, [ e ] and each of you shall return to his family. 11 You shall have the fiftieth year as a jubilee; you shall not sow, nor harvest its aftergrowth, nor gather grapes from its untrimmed vines. 12 For it is a jubilee; it shall be holy to you. You shall eat its produce from the field.
13 ‘ ( G ) On this year of jubilee each of you shall return to his own property. 14 Furthermore, if you make a sale to your friend, or buy from your friend’s hand, ( H ) you shall not [ f ] wrong one another. 15 Corresponding to the number of years after the jubilee, you shall buy from your [ g ] friend; he is to sell to you according to the number of years of crops. 16 ( I ) In proportion to [ h ] a greater number of years you shall increase its price, and in proportion to [ i ] fewer years you shall decrease its price, because it is the number of crops that he is selling to you. 17 So ( J ) you shall not [ j ] wrong one another, but you shall [ k ] fear your God; for I am the Lord your God.
18 ‘You shall therefore [ l ] follow My statutes and keep My judgments so as to carry them out, so that ( K ) you may live securely on the land. 19 Then the land will yield its produce, so that you can eat your fill and live securely on it. 20 But if you say, “ ( L ) What are we going to eat in the seventh year if we do not sow nor gather in our produce?” 21 then ( M ) I will so order My blessing for you in the sixth year that it will bring forth the produce for three years. 22 When you are sowing the eighth year, you can still eat ( N ) old things from the produce, eating the old until the ninth year when its produce comes in.
23 ‘The land, moreover, shall not be sold permanently, because ( O ) the land is Mine; for ( P ) you are only strangers and residents with Me. 24 So for every [ m ] piece of your property, you are to provide for the redemption of the land.
25 ‘ ( Q ) If a fellow countryman of yours becomes so poor that he sells part of his property, then his closest [ n ] redeemer is to come and buy back what his relative has sold. 26 Or in case someone has no redeemer, but [ o ] recovers to find sufficient means for its redemption, 27 ( R ) then he shall calculate the years since its sale and refund the balance to the man to whom he sold it, and so return to his property. 28 But if [ p ] he has not found sufficient means to get it back for himself, then what he has sold shall remain in the hands of its purchaser until the year of jubilee; but at the jubilee it shall [ q ] revert, so that ( S ) he may return to his property.
29 ‘Likewise, if a man sells a dwelling house in a walled city, then his redemption right remains valid until a full year after its sale; his right of redemption lasts a full year. 30 But if it is not bought back for him within the space of a full year, then the house that is in the walled city passes permanently to its purchaser throughout his generations; it does not [ r ] revert in the jubilee. 31 The houses of the villages, however, which have no surrounding wall, shall be regarded [ s ] as open fields; they have redemption rights and [ t ] revert in the jubilee. 32 As for the ( T ) cities of the Levites, the Levites have a permanent right of redemption for the houses of the cities which are their possession. 33 What, therefore, [ u ] belongs to the Levites may be redeemed, and a house sale [ v ] in the city of this possession [ w ] reverts in the jubilee, because the houses of the cities of the Levites are their possession among the sons of Israel. 34 ( U ) But pasture fields of their cities shall not be sold, for that is their permanent possession.
35 ‘ ( V ) Now in case a countryman of yours becomes poor and his [ x ] means among you falter, then you are to sustain him, like a stranger or a resident, so that he may live with you. 36 ( W ) Do not take [ y ] any kind of interest from him, but [ z ] fear your God, so that your countryman may live with you. 37 You shall not give him your silver at interest, nor your food [ aa ] for profit. 38 ( X ) I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt to give you the land of Canaan, and ( Y ) to be your God.
39 ‘Now ( Z ) if a countryman of yours becomes so poor with regard to you that he sells himself to you, you shall not subject him to a slave’s service. 40 He shall be with you as a hired worker, ( AA ) as if he were a foreign resident; he shall serve with you up to the year of jubilee. 41 He shall then leave you, he and his sons with him, and shall go back to his family, so that he may return to the property of his forefathers. 42 For they are My servants whom I brought out from the land of Egypt; they are not to be sold in a slave sale. 43 ( AB ) You shall not rule over him with [ ab ] severity, but are to revere your God. 44 As for your male and female slaves whom you may have—you may acquire male and female slaves from the pagan nations that are around you. 45 You may also acquire them from the sons of the foreign residents who reside among you, and from their families who are with you, whom they will have produced in your land; they also may become your possession. 46 You may also pass them on as an inheritance to your sons after you, to receive as a possession; you can use them as permanent slaves. ( AC ) But in respect to your countrymen, the sons of Israel, you shall not rule with [ ac ] severity over one another.
47 ‘Now if the [ ad ] means of a stranger or of a foreign resident with you becomes sufficient, and a countryman of yours becomes poor in relation to him and sells himself to a stranger who is residing with you, or to the descendants of a stranger’s family, 48 then he shall have redemption right after he has been sold. One of his brothers may redeem him, 49 or his uncle, or his uncle’s son may redeem him, or one of his blood relatives from his family may redeem him; or [ ae ] ( AD ) if he prospers, he may redeem himself. 50 He then, with his purchaser, shall calculate from the year when he sold himself to him up to the year of jubilee; and the price of his sale shall correspond to the number of years calculated. It is like the days of a hired worker that he will be with him. 51 If there are still many years remaining , ( AE ) he shall refund part of his purchase price in proportion to them for his own redemption; 52 but if few years remain until the year of jubilee, he shall so calculate with him. In proportion to his years he is to refund the amount for his redemption. 53 He shall be with him like a worker hired year by year; ( AF ) he shall not rule over him with [ af ] severity in your sight. 54 Even if he is not redeemed by [ ag ] these means, ( AG ) he shall still leave in the year of jubilee, he and his sons with him. 55 For the sons of Israel are My servants; they are My servants whom I brought out from the land of Egypt. I am the Lord your God.
25 The Lord said to Moses at Mount Sinai, ( A ) 2 “Speak to the Israelites and say to them: ‘When you enter the land I am going to give you, the land itself must observe a sabbath to the Lord . 3 For six years sow your fields, and for six years prune your vineyards and gather their crops. ( B ) 4 But in the seventh year the land is to have a year of sabbath rest, ( C ) a sabbath to the Lord . Do not sow your fields or prune your vineyards. ( D ) 5 Do not reap what grows of itself ( E ) or harvest the grapes ( F ) of your untended vines. ( G ) The land is to have a year of rest. 6 Whatever the land yields during the sabbath year ( H ) will be food for you—for yourself, your male and female servants, and the hired worker and temporary resident who live among you, 7 as well as for your livestock and the wild animals ( I ) in your land. Whatever the land produces may be eaten.
8 “‘Count off seven sabbath years—seven times seven years—so that the seven sabbath years amount to a period of forty-nine years. 9 Then have the trumpet ( L ) sounded everywhere on the tenth day of the seventh month; ( M ) on the Day of Atonement ( N ) sound the trumpet throughout your land. 10 Consecrate the fiftieth year and proclaim liberty ( O ) throughout the land to all its inhabitants. It shall be a jubilee ( P ) for you; each of you is to return to your family property ( Q ) and to your own clan. 11 The fiftieth year shall be a jubilee ( R ) for you; do not sow and do not reap what grows of itself or harvest the untended vines. ( S ) 12 For it is a jubilee and is to be holy for you; eat only what is taken directly from the fields.
13 “‘In this Year of Jubilee ( T ) everyone is to return to their own property.
14 “‘If you sell land to any of your own people or buy land from them, do not take advantage of each other. ( U ) 15 You are to buy from your own people on the basis of the number of years ( V ) since the Jubilee. And they are to sell to you on the basis of the number of years left for harvesting crops. 16 When the years are many, you are to increase the price, and when the years are few, you are to decrease the price, ( W ) because what is really being sold to you is the number of crops. 17 Do not take advantage of each other, ( X ) but fear your God. ( Y ) I am the Lord your God. ( Z )
18 “‘Follow my decrees and be careful to obey my laws, ( AA ) and you will live safely in the land. ( AB ) 19 Then the land will yield its fruit, ( AC ) and you will eat your fill and live there in safety. ( AD ) 20 You may ask, “What will we eat in the seventh year ( AE ) if we do not plant or harvest our crops?” 21 I will send you such a blessing ( AF ) in the sixth year that the land will yield enough for three years. ( AG ) 22 While you plant during the eighth year, you will eat from the old crop and will continue to eat from it until the harvest of the ninth year comes in. ( AH )
23 “‘The land ( AI ) must not be sold permanently, because the land is mine ( AJ ) and you reside in my land as foreigners ( AK ) and strangers. 24 Throughout the land that you hold as a possession, you must provide for the redemption ( AL ) of the land.
25 “‘If one of your fellow Israelites becomes poor and sells some of their property, their nearest relative ( AM ) is to come and redeem ( AN ) what they have sold. 26 If, however, there is no one to redeem it for them but later on they prosper ( AO ) and acquire sufficient means to redeem it themselves, 27 they are to determine the value for the years ( AP ) since they sold it and refund the balance to the one to whom they sold it; they can then go back to their own property. ( AQ ) 28 But if they do not acquire the means to repay, what was sold will remain in the possession of the buyer until the Year of Jubilee. It will be returned ( AR ) in the Jubilee, and they can then go back to their property. ( AS )
29 “‘Anyone who sells a house in a walled city retains the right of redemption a full year after its sale. During that time the seller may redeem it. 30 If it is not redeemed before a full year has passed, the house in the walled city shall belong permanently to the buyer and the buyer’s descendants. It is not to be returned in the Jubilee. 31 But houses in villages without walls around them are to be considered as belonging to the open country. They can be redeemed, and they are to be returned in the Jubilee.
32 “‘The Levites always have the right to redeem their houses in the Levitical towns, ( AT ) which they possess. 33 So the property of the Levites is redeemable—that is, a house sold in any town they hold—and is to be returned in the Jubilee, because the houses in the towns of the Levites are their property among the Israelites. 34 But the pastureland belonging to their towns must not be sold; it is their permanent possession. ( AU )
35 “‘If any of your fellow Israelites become poor ( AV ) and are unable to support themselves among you, help them ( AW ) as you would a foreigner and stranger, so they can continue to live among you. 36 Do not take interest ( AX ) or any profit from them, but fear your God, ( AY ) so that they may continue to live among you. 37 You must not lend them money at interest ( AZ ) or sell them food at a profit. 38 I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt to give you the land of Canaan ( BA ) and to be your God. ( BB )
39 “‘If any of your fellow Israelites become poor and sell themselves to you, do not make them work as slaves. ( BC ) 40 They are to be treated as hired workers ( BD ) or temporary residents among you; they are to work for you until the Year of Jubilee. 41 Then they and their children are to be released, and they will go back to their own clans and to the property ( BE ) of their ancestors. ( BF ) 42 Because the Israelites are my servants, whom I brought out of Egypt, ( BG ) they must not be sold as slaves. 43 Do not rule over them ruthlessly, ( BH ) but fear your God. ( BI )
44 “‘Your male and female slaves are to come from the nations around you; from them you may buy slaves. 45 You may also buy some of the temporary residents living among you and members of their clans born in your country, and they will become your property. 46 You can bequeath them to your children as inherited property and can make them slaves for life, but you must not rule over your fellow Israelites ruthlessly.
47 “‘If a foreigner residing among you becomes rich and any of your fellow Israelites become poor and sell themselves ( BJ ) to the foreigner or to a member of the foreigner’s clan, 48 they retain the right of redemption ( BK ) after they have sold themselves. One of their relatives ( BL ) may redeem them: 49 An uncle or a cousin or any blood relative in their clan may redeem them. Or if they prosper, ( BM ) they may redeem themselves. 50 They and their buyer are to count the time from the year they sold themselves up to the Year of Jubilee. ( BN ) The price for their release is to be based on the rate paid to a hired worker ( BO ) for that number of years. 51 If many years remain, they must pay for their redemption a larger share of the price paid for them. 52 If only a few years remain until the Year of Jubilee, they are to compute that and pay for their redemption accordingly. ( BP ) 53 They are to be treated as workers hired from year to year; you must see to it that those to whom they owe service do not rule over them ruthlessly. ( BQ )
54 “‘Even if someone is not redeemed in any of these ways, they and their children are to be released in the Year of Jubilee, 55 for the Israelites belong to me as servants. They are my servants, whom I brought out of Egypt. ( BR ) I am the Lord your God. ( BS )
