What would happen if the people did not obey the rules

20 The Lord said to Moses, 2 ‘Talk to Israel's people. Say, “If any Israelite or foreign person gives his children to the god called Molech, he must die.” The people must throw stones at him to kill him. 3 I, the Lord , will turn away from that person. I will make him separate from his people. That person did not respect the Lord. He did not respect the Lord's holy name. 4 Israel's people may not think that his sin was important. So they might not kill him. 5 But the Lord himself will become an enemy of the man and of his family. The Lord will send him away with all the people who worship the god called Molech.

6 A person must not ask someone who does magic for help. They are turning away from the Lord. He will send them away from his people.

7 The people must be holy. I am the Lord your God. 8 They must always obey all my rules. I am the Lord who makes them holy.

9 If a person says bad things about his mother or his father, you must kill him. He has destroyed their honour. His sin will cause his death.

10 If a man has sex with another man's wife you must kill him and the woman.

11 A man is sinning if he has sex with his father's wife. You must kill the man and the woman. They have destroyed the father's honour. Their sin causes their death.

12 A man is sinning if he has sex with his son's wife. You must kill them both. They have done a strange thing. Their own sin causes their death.

13 A man is sinning if he has sex with another man. You must kill both of the men. They should be ashamed. Their sin causes their death.

14 A man is sinning if he marries a woman and her mother. You must burn the man and both the women in the fire. Then their sin will not make my people unclean.

15 A man is sinning if he has sex with an animal. You must kill the man and the animal.

16 A woman is sinning if she has sex with an animal. You must kill the woman and the animal. Their sin causes their death.

17 It is a sin if a man marries his sister. She may be the daughter of his father or of his mother. It is a sin if he has sex with her. The people must send them away. He has taken away his sister's honour. He must carry the punishment for his sin.

18 A man must not have sex with a woman when she is bleeding. If he does, it is a sin. They have not obeyed the rules of the Lord . The people must send them away.

19 A man must not have sex with his mother's sister or with his father's sister. They are both doing a wrong thing. They are taking away the family's honour. Their sin causes their punishment.

20 A man is sinning if he has sex with his aunt. He is taking away his father's brother's honour. They will have no children.

21 It makes the people unclean if a man marries his brother's wife. He has taken away his brother's honour. They will not have any children.

22 If the people want to remain in the land that I am giving to them, they must obey my laws and my rules. 23 The people who are living in Canaan now are doing bad things. I, the Lord, hate them because they do these things. I will send them out of Canaan. 24 I, the Lord, will give their land to Israel's people. I will give it to you and to your children to keep for all time. In that land, there is plenty of food and drink, enough for everyone. I am the Lord your God. I want you to be separate from other people.

25 The people must know which animals are clean. And they must know which animals are unclean. They must know which birds are clean. And they must know which birds are unclean. They must not eat any animal or bird that is unclean. 26 I am the Lord and I am holy. So my people must be holy for me. I have made them separate from other people. They belong to me.

27 A man or a woman who uses magic is doing a wrong thing. People must throw stones at that person until they die. Their sin will cause their death.’

Warning Against Worshiping Idols

20 The Lord said to Moses, 2 “You must also tell the Israelites these things: Anyone living in Israel who gives one of their children to the false god Molech must be killed! It doesn’t matter if they are a citizen of Israel or a foreigner, you must throw stones at them and kill them. 3 I will be against them and separate them from their people, because they gave their children to Molech. They showed that they did not respect my holy name. And they made my holy place unclean. 4 Maybe the common people will ignore them. Maybe they will not kill those who gave their children to Molech. 5 But I will be against these people and their families. I will separate them from their people. I will separate anyone who is unfaithful to me and chases after Molech.

6 “I will be against anyone who goes to mediums and wizards for advice. Whoever does this is being unfaithful to me. So I will separate them from their people.

7 “Be special. Make yourselves holy, because I am the Lord your God. 8 Remember and obey my laws. I am the Lord . And I have made you my special people.

9 “Whoever curses their father or mother must be put to death. They cursed their father or mother, so they are responsible for their own death! [ a ]

Punishments for Sexual Sins

10 “If a man has sexual relations with his neighbor’s wife, both the man and the woman are guilty of adultery and must be put to death! 11 If a man has sexual relations with his father’s wife, both the man and the woman must be put to death. They are responsible for their own death. [ b ] It is as if that man had sexual relations with his father! [ c ]

12 “If a man has sexual relations with his daughter-in-law, both of them must be put to death. They have committed a terrible sexual sin! They are responsible for their own death.

13 “If a man has sexual relations with another man as with a woman, they have committed a terrible sin. They must be put to death. They are responsible for their own death.

14 “It is a sexual sin if a man has sexual relations with a woman and her mother. The people must burn that man and the two women in fire! Don’t let this sexual sin happen among your people.

15 “If a man has sexual relations with an animal, both the man and the animal must be put to death. 16 If a woman has sexual relations with an animal, you must kill the woman and the animal. They must be put to death. They are responsible for their own death.

17 “It is a shameful thing for a brother and his sister or half-sister to marry each other and have sexual relations with each other. [ d ] They must be punished in public. They must be separated from their people. The man who has sexual relations with his sister must be punished for his sin. [ e ]

18 “If a man has sexual relations with a woman during her monthly time of bleeding, both the woman and the man must be separated from their people. They sinned because they exposed her source of blood.

19 “You must not have sexual relations with [ f ] your mother’s sister or your father’s sister. That is a sin of incest. [ g ] You must be punished for your sins. [ h ]

20 “A man must not have sexual relations with his uncle’s wife. It would be like having sexual relations with his uncle. That man and his uncle’s wife will be punished for their sins. They will die without children. [ i ]

21 “It is wrong for a man to take his brother’s wife. It would be like having sexual relations with his brother! They will have no children.

22 “You must remember all my laws and rules. And you must obey them. I am leading you to your land. You will live in that country. If you obey my laws and rules, that land will not vomit you out. 23 I am forcing other people to leave that country because they committed all those sins. I hate those sins! So don’t live the way those people lived. 24 But I have told you that you will get their land. I will give their land to you. It will be your land! It is a land filled with many good things. [ j ] I am the Lord your God.

“I have treated you differently from other people. 25 So you must treat clean animals differently from unclean animals. You must also treat clean birds differently from unclean birds. Don’t eat any of these unclean birds or animals or things that crawl on the ground. I have made these things unclean. 26 I have separated you from other nations to be my own special people. So you must be holy because I am the Lord , and I am holy.

27 “A man or a woman who is a medium or a wizard must be put to death. The people must kill them with stones. They are responsible for their own death.”

20 And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,

2 Again, thou shalt say to the children of Israel, Whosoever he be of the children of Israel, or of the strangers that sojourn in Israel, that giveth any of his seed unto Molech; he shall surely be put to death: the people of the land shall stone him with stones.

3 And I will set my face against that man, and will cut him off from among his people; because he hath given of his seed unto Molech, to defile my sanctuary, and to profane my holy name.

4 And if the people of the land do any ways hide their eyes from the man, when he giveth of his seed unto Molech, and kill him not:

5 Then I will set my face against that man, and against his family, and will cut him off, and all that go a whoring after him, to commit whoredom with Molech, from among their people.

6 And the soul that turneth after such as have familiar spirits, and after wizards, to go a whoring after them, I will even set my face against that soul, and will cut him off from among his people.

7 Sanctify yourselves therefore, and be ye holy: for I am the Lord your God.

8 And ye shall keep my statutes, and do them: I am the Lord which sanctify you.

9 For every one that curseth his father or his mother shall be surely put to death: he hath cursed his father or his mother; his blood shall be upon him.

10 And the man that committeth adultery with another man's wife, even he that committeth adultery with his neighbour's wife, the adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death.

11 And the man that lieth with his father's wife hath uncovered his father's nakedness: both of them shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.

12 And if a man lie with his daughter in law, both of them shall surely be put to death: they have wrought confusion; their blood shall be upon them.

13 If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.

14 And if a man take a wife and her mother, it is wickedness: they shall be burnt with fire, both he and they; that there be no wickedness among you.

15 And if a man lie with a beast, he shall surely be put to death: and ye shall slay the beast.

16 And if a woman approach unto any beast, and lie down thereto, thou shalt kill the woman, and the beast: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.

17 And if a man shall take his sister, his father's daughter, or his mother's daughter, and see her nakedness, and she see his nakedness; it is a wicked thing; and they shall be cut off in the sight of their people: he hath uncovered his sister's nakedness; he shall bear his iniquity.

18 And if a man shall lie with a woman having her sickness, and shall uncover her nakedness; he hath discovered her fountain, and she hath uncovered the fountain of her blood: and both of them shall be cut off from among their people.

19 And thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of thy mother's sister, nor of thy father's sister: for he uncovereth his near kin: they shall bear their iniquity.

20 And if a man shall lie with his uncle's wife, he hath uncovered his uncle's nakedness: they shall bear their sin; they shall die childless.

21 And if a man shall take his brother's wife, it is an unclean thing: he hath uncovered his brother's nakedness; they shall be childless.

22 Ye shall therefore keep all my statutes, and all my judgments, and do them: that the land, whither I bring you to dwell therein, spue you not out.

23 And ye shall not walk in the manners of the nation, which I cast out before you: for they committed all these things, and therefore I abhorred them.

24 But I have said unto you, Ye shall inherit their land, and I will give it unto you to possess it, a land that floweth with milk and honey: I am the Lord your God, which have separated you from other people.

25 Ye shall therefore put difference between clean beasts and unclean, and between unclean fowls and clean: and ye shall not make your souls abominable by beast, or by fowl, or by any manner of living thing that creepeth on the ground, which I have separated from you as unclean.

26 And ye shall be holy unto me: for I the Lord am holy, and have severed you from other people, that ye should be mine.

27 A man also or woman that hath a familiar spirit, or that is a wizard, shall surely be put to death: they shall stone them with stones: their blood shall be upon them.

On Human Sacrifice and Immoralities

20 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 2 “You shall also say to the sons of Israel:

‘Anyone from the sons of Israel or from the strangers residing in Israel ( A ) who gives any of his [ a ] children to Molech, shall certainly be put to death; ( B ) the people of the land shall stone him with stones. 3 I will also set My face against that man and will cut him off from among his people, because he has given some of his [ b ] children to Molech, ( C ) so as to defile My sanctuary and ( D ) to profane My holy name. 4 If the people of the land, however, [ c ] should ever disregard that man when he gives any of his [ d ] children to Molech, so as not to put him to death, 5 then I Myself will set My face against that man and against his family, and I will cut off from among their people both him and all those who play the prostitute with him, by playing the prostitute with Molech.

6 ‘As for the person who turns to [ e ] ( E ) mediums and to spiritists, to play the prostitute with them, I will also set My face against that person and will cut him off from among his people. 7 You shall consecrate yourselves therefore and ( F ) be holy, for I am the Lord your God. 8 So ( G ) you shall keep My statutes and practice them; I am the Lord who sanctifies you.

9 ( H ) If there is anyone who curses his father or his mother, he shall certainly be put to death. He has cursed his father or his mother, and has brought his [ f ] own death upon himself.

10 ( I ) If there is a man who commits adultery with another man’s wife, one who commits adultery with his friend’s wife, the adulterer and the adulteress must be put to death. 11 ( J ) If there is a man who sleeps with his father’s wife, he has uncovered his father’s nakedness. Both of them must be put to death, they have brought their [ g ] own deaths upon themselves. 12 ( K ) If there is a man who sleeps with his daughter-in-law, both of them must be put to death. They have committed [ h ] incest, and have brought their [ i ] own deaths upon themselves. 13 ( L ) If there is a man who sleeps with a male as those who sleep with a woman, both of them have committed a detestable act; they must be put to death. They have brought their [ j ] own deaths upon themselves. 14 ( M ) If there is a man who [ k ] marries a woman and her mother, it is an outrageous sin; both he and they shall be burned with fire, so that there will be no such outrageous sin in your midst. 15 ( N ) If there is a man who has sexual intercourse with an animal, he must be put to death; you shall also kill the animal. 16 If there is a woman who approaches any animal to [ l ] mate with it, you shall kill the woman and the animal; they must be put to death. They have brought their [ m ] own deaths upon themselves.

17 ( O ) If there is a man who takes his sister, his father’s daughter or his mother’s daughter, so that he sees her nakedness and she sees his nakedness, it is a disgrace; and they shall be cut off in the sight of the sons of their people. He has uncovered his sister’s nakedness; he bears his guilt. 18 ( P ) If there is a man who sleeps with a menstruous woman and uncovers her nakedness, he has exposed her flow, and she has uncovered the flow of her blood; so both of them shall be cut off from among their people. 19 ( Q ) You shall also not uncover the nakedness of your mother’s sister or of your father’s sister, for such a one has uncovered his [ n ] blood relative; they will bear their guilt. 20 ( R ) If there is a man who sleeps with his uncle’s wife, he has uncovered his uncle’s nakedness; they will bear their sin. They will die childless. 21 ( S ) If there is a man who takes his brother’s wife, it is [ o ] detestable; he has uncovered his brother’s nakedness. They will be childless.

22 ‘You are therefore to keep all My statutes and all My ordinances, and do them, so that the land to which I am bringing you to [ p ] live will not ( T ) vomit you out. 23 Furthermore, you shall not [ q ] follow ( U ) the customs of the nation which I am going to drive out before you, because they did all these things; ( V ) therefore I have felt disgust for them. 24 So I have said to you, “ ( W ) You are to take possession of their land, and I Myself will give it to you to possess, a land flowing with milk and honey.” I am the Lord your God, who has ( X ) singled you out from the peoples. 25 ( Y ) You are therefore to make a distinction between the clean animal and the unclean, and between the unclean bird and the clean; and you shall not make [ r ] yourselves detestable by animal or by bird, or by anything [ s ] that crawls on the ground, which I have distinguished for you as unclean. 26 So you are to be holy to Me, for I the Lord am holy; and I ( Z ) have singled you out from the peoples to be Mine.

27 ‘Now a man or a woman ( AA ) who is a medium or a spiritist [ t ] must be put to death. They shall be stoned with stones; they have brought their [ u ] own deaths upon themselves.’”

( F ) 4 If the members of the community close their eyes when that man sacrifices one of his children to Molek and if they fail to put him to death, ( G ) 5 I myself will set my face against him and his family and will cut them off from their people together with all who follow him in prostituting themselves to Molek.
