Rules about the Day of Atonement

16 The Lord spoke to Moses after the two sons of Aaron died. The gift that they gave to the Lord was not holy. So they died. 2 The Most Holy Place in the Tent of Meeting is behind the curtain. The Lord said to Moses, ‘Your brother Aaron cannot go behind the curtain at any time that he wants to. Tell him that. The Lord appears in a cloud over the lid of the Covenant Box. So Aaron will die if he does not obey the Lord .

3 This is how Aaron must go into the Most Holy Place. He must bring a young bull for a sin offering. He must also bring a male sheep for a burnt offering. 4 He must wash his body before he puts on his special clothes. He must wear his linen robe and linen clothes next to his body. They are holy. He must tie a linen belt round his body. He must put the linen hat on his head. These clothes are holy. 5 He must take two male goats for a sin offering. And he must take a male sheep for a burnt offering. They are a gift from Israel's people.

6 Aaron must offer the bull as an atonement to the Lord for himself, his family and his servants. 7 He must take the two goats to the door of the Tent of Meeting. They are a gift to the Lord . 8 He must use the special stones. [ a ] They will help him to decide what he should do. He must decide which goat is for the Lord . And he must decide which goat he must send away. 9 Aaron must take the goat that is for the Lord . And he must kill it. It is a sin offering. 10 He must not kill the other goat. It is an atonement to the Lord . It will pay for the bad things that the people have done. It is to take away the people's punishment. He must send it away into the desert.’

11 ‘Aaron must bring the bull and he must kill it. It is his atonement for his family's sins. 12 He must take a pot of the hot material. It is burning on the altar in front of the Lord . He must fill his two hands with incense. He must take the hot material and the incense behind the curtain. 13 He must put the incense on the burning material. It is in front of the Lord . The smoke will cover the lid of the Covenant Box. So he will not die. 14 He must take with him blood from the bull. He must use his finger to shake the blood. He must shake it onto the lid of the Covenant Box. He must shake the blood in front of the lid of the Covenant Box. He must shake it seven times with his finger.

15 Aaron must kill the goat for the sin offering. It is a gift from the people. He must take the blood behind the curtain. He must shake the blood on the lid of the Covenant Box as he did with the bull's blood. And he must shake the blood in front of the lid of the Covenant Box. 16 This will make atonement for all the sins of Israel's people. This will make the Holy Place clean. Aaron must do the same for the Tent of Meeting. That is because the people have done bad things in the camp. The Tent of meeting is in the middle of the camp. 17 Aaron must give the offerings to God. He must give them for his family and he must give them for his servants. He must give them for all the people. Nobody can go into the Tent of Meeting while Aaron is in the Most Holy Place. He must be alone when he goes in. And he must be alone until he comes out. He must be alone when he gives the offerings to God. Those offerings make atonement for himself, for his family and for all Israel's people.

18 He must go to the altar that is in front of the Lord . He must make atonement for it. He must take blood from the bull and blood from the goat. He must put the blood on the horns of the altar. 19 He must shake blood on the altar seven times to make it clean.

A goat will carry away all the bad things that the people have done

20 Aaron must first atone for the Most Holy Place, the Tent of meeting and the altar. Then he must bring the goat that is alive. 21 He must put his hands on the goat's head. He must speak aloud all the bad things that Israel's people have done. Then all the bad things will be on the goat's head. Aaron must tell a man that he must send the goat away into the desert. 22 The goat will carry all the sins of the people into the desert. The man must send it away into the desert.

23 Aaron must go into the Tent of Meeting. He must take off his special linen clothes. The holy clothes must stay in the Tent of Meeting. 24 He must wash his body in a holy place. He must put on his own clothes. He must leave the holy place. Then he must sacrifice the burnt offerings. They will make atonement for himself and for the people. 25 And he must also burn the fat from the sin offering on the altar.

26 The person who sent the goat away must wash his clothes and his body. He can return to the camp. 27 Aaron had killed a bull and a goat. He took their blood into the Most Holy Place to make atonement. Someone must carry their dead bodies outside the camp. He must burn them. That man must burn the skin, the meat and the inside parts. 28 The man who burnt the animals must wash his clothes and his body. Then he can return to the camp.

29 On the tenth day of the seventh month, Israel's people must not eat any food. This is a rule that you must obey for all time. The people who are travelling with them must not eat any food. None of them must do any work. 30 This day will make them clean from all their sins. The Lord will see them as clean people. This will be the Day of Atonement. 31 It is a day when you do not eat any food. It is a day of rest. This is a rule from God and you must do this every year. 32 The leader of the priests is a chosen son of Aaron. And he must make atonement. He will put on the special linen clothes that are holy. He will bring the people's offerings. 33 He will make atonement for the Most Holy Place. He will make atonement for the Tent of Meeting. He will make atonement for the altar. He will make atonement for the priests and for all the people.

34 He will make atonement for all the Israelites' sins once every year. This rule is for now and for all time.’

The people did everything in the way that the Lord had commanded Moses.

The Day of Atonement

16 Two of Aaron’s sons died while offering incense to the Lord . [ a ] After that time, the Lord spoke to Moses. 2 The Lord said, “Talk to your brother Aaron. Tell him that he cannot go behind the curtain into the Most Holy Place anytime he wants to. The mercy-cover is in the room behind that curtain on top of the Holy Box, and I appear in a cloud over that mercy-cover. If Aaron goes into that room, he will die!

3 “Before Aaron enters the Most Holy Place, he will offer a bull for a sin offering and a ram for a burnt offering. 4 Aaron will wash his whole body with water and put on the special clothes. He will put on the linen underwear next to his body, the linen robe, the linen belt, and then he will put the linen turban on his head.

5 “From the whole community of Israel, Aaron will accept two male goats for a sin offering and one ram for a burnt offering. 6 Then he will offer the bull for the sin offering. This sin offering is for himself. He will do this to purify [ b ] himself and his family.

7 “Then Aaron will take the two goats and bring them before the Lord at the doorway of the Meeting Tent. 8 Aaron will throw lots for the two goats. One lot will be for the Lord . The other lot will be for Azazel. [ c ]

9 “Then Aaron will offer the goat chosen by the lot for the Lord . Aaron will make this goat a sin offering. 10 But the goat chosen by the lot for Azazel will be brought alive before the Lord . Then this goat will be sent out to Azazel in the desert. This is to make the people pure.

11 “Then Aaron will offer the bull as a sin offering for himself. He will purify himself and his family. He will kill the bull for the sin offering for himself. 12 Then he will take a firepan full of coals of fire from the altar before the Lord . Aaron will take two handfuls of sweet incense that has been ground into powder and take it into the room behind the curtain. 13 He will put the incense on the fire before the Lord . Then the cloud of incense will hide the mercy-cover that is over the Box that holds the Agreement. [ d ] This way Aaron will not die. 14 Aaron will dip his finger into the bull’s blood and sprinkle it on the front of the Holy Box. Then he will sprinkle the blood seven times onto the front of the mercy-cover.

15 “Then Aaron will kill the goat of the sin offering for the people. He will bring this goat’s blood into the room behind the curtain. He will do with the goat’s blood as he did with the bull’s blood. He will sprinkle the goat’s blood on the mercy-cover and in front of it. 16 In this way Aaron will purify the Most Holy Place from all the uncleanness and sins of the Israelites. He will also purify the Meeting Tent, because it stands in the middle of people whose sins have made them unclean.

17 “No one must be in the Meeting Tent when Aaron goes in to purify the Most Holy Place. No one is to go in there until Aaron comes out after purifying himself, his family, and all the Israelites. 18 Then Aaron will go out to the altar that is before the Lord . Aaron will make the altar pure. He will take some of the blood from the bull and from the goat and put it on the corners of the altar on all four sides. 19 Then he will dip his finger in the blood and sprinkle it on the altar seven times. In this way Aaron will make the altar holy and clean from all the sins of the Israelites.

20 “So Aaron will make the Most Holy Place, the Meeting Tent, and the altar pure. Then he will bring the living goat to the front of the tent. 21 He will put both his hands on the head of the living goat. Then he will confess the sins and crimes of the Israelites over the goat. In this way Aaron will lay the people’s sins on the goat’s head. Then he will send the goat away into the desert. A man will be standing by, ready to lead this goat away. 22 So the goat will carry all the people’s sins on itself into the empty desert. The man who leads the goat will let it loose in the desert.

23 “Then Aaron will enter the Meeting Tent. He will take off the linen clothes that he put on when he went into the Holy Place. He will leave these clothes there. 24 He will wash his whole body with water in a holy place. Then he will put on his clothes. He will come out and offer his burnt offering and the people’s burnt offering. He will make himself and the people pure. 25 Then he will burn the fat of the sin offering on the altar.

26 “The man who led the goat to Azazel must wash his clothes and his whole body with water. After that he may come into the camp.

27 “The bull and the goat for the sin offerings will be taken outside the camp. (The blood from these animals was brought into the Holy Place to make the holy things pure.) The skins, bodies, and body waste of those animals will be burned in the fire. 28 Then the man who burns them must wash his clothes and bathe his whole body with water. After that he may come into the camp.

29 “This law will always continue for you: On the tenth day of the seventh month, you must not eat food. [ e ] You must not do any work. None of the travelers or foreigners living in your land can do any work either. 30 Because on this day, the priest will do this to make you pure and wash away your sins. Then you will be clean to the Lord . 31 You must humble yourselves [ f ] because this day is a very important day of rest for you. This law will continue forever.

32 “In the future, this ceremony will be done by the priest who will be anointed and appointed to serve after his father. That priest will put on the holy linen clothes 33 and make the Most Holy Place, the Meeting Tent, and the altar pure. He will also make the priests and all the people pure. 34 That law will continue forever. Once every year you will purify the Israelites from all their sins.”

So they did everything that the Lord had commanded Moses.

16 And the Lord spake unto Moses after the death of the two sons of Aaron, when they offered before the Lord , and died;

2 And the Lord said unto Moses, Speak unto Aaron thy brother, that he come not at all times into the holy place within the vail before the mercy seat, which is upon the ark; that he die not: for I will appear in the cloud upon the mercy seat.

3 Thus shall Aaron come into the holy place: with a young bullock for a sin offering, and a ram for a burnt offering.

4 He shall put on the holy linen coat, and he shall have the linen breeches upon his flesh, and shall be girded with a linen girdle, and with the linen mitre shall he be attired: these are holy garments; therefore shall he wash his flesh in water, and so put them on.

5 And he shall take of the congregation of the children of Israel two kids of the goats for a sin offering, and one ram for a burnt offering.

6 And Aaron shall offer his bullock of the sin offering, which is for himself, and make an atonement for himself, and for his house.

7 And he shall take the two goats, and present them before the Lord at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.

8 And Aaron shall cast lots upon the two goats; one lot for the Lord , and the other lot for the scapegoat.

9 And Aaron shall bring the goat upon which the Lord 's lot fell, and offer him for a sin offering.

10 But the goat, on which the lot fell to be the scapegoat, shall be presented alive before the Lord , to make an atonement with him, and to let him go for a scapegoat into the wilderness.

11 And Aaron shall bring the bullock of the sin offering, which is for himself, and shall make an atonement for himself, and for his house, and shall kill the bullock of the sin offering which is for himself:

12 And he shall take a censer full of burning coals of fire from off the altar before the Lord , and his hands full of sweet incense beaten small, and bring it within the vail:

13 And he shall put the incense upon the fire before the Lord , that the cloud of the incense may cover the mercy seat that is upon the testimony, that he die not:

14 And he shall take of the blood of the bullock, and sprinkle it with his finger upon the mercy seat eastward; and before the mercy seat shall he sprinkle of the blood with his finger seven times.

15 Then shall he kill the goat of the sin offering, that is for the people, and bring his blood within the vail, and do with that blood as he did with the blood of the bullock, and sprinkle it upon the mercy seat, and before the mercy seat:

16 And he shall make an atonement for the holy place, because of the uncleanness of the children of Israel, and because of their transgressions in all their sins: and so shall he do for the tabernacle of the congregation, that remaineth among them in the midst of their uncleanness.

17 And there shall be no man in the tabernacle of the congregation when he goeth in to make an atonement in the holy place, until he come out, and have made an atonement for himself, and for his household, and for all the congregation of Israel.

18 And he shall go out unto the altar that is before the Lord , and make an atonement for it; and shall take of the blood of the bullock, and of the blood of the goat, and put it upon the horns of the altar round about.

19 And he shall sprinkle of the blood upon it with his finger seven times, and cleanse it, and hallow it from the uncleanness of the children of Israel.

20 And when he hath made an end of reconciling the holy place, and the tabernacle of the congregation, and the altar, he shall bring the live goat:

21 And Aaron shall lay both his hands upon the head of the live goat, and confess over him all the iniquities of the children of Israel, and all their transgressions in all their sins, putting them upon the head of the goat, and shall send him away by the hand of a fit man into the wilderness:

22 And the goat shall bear upon him all their iniquities unto a land not inhabited: and he shall let go the goat in the wilderness.

23 And Aaron shall come into the tabernacle of the congregation, and shall put off the linen garments, which he put on when he went into the holy place, and shall leave them there:

24 And he shall wash his flesh with water in the holy place, and put on his garments, and come forth, and offer his burnt offering, and the burnt offering of the people, and make an atonement for himself, and for the people.

25 And the fat of the sin offering shall he burn upon the altar.

26 And he that let go the goat for the scapegoat shall wash his clothes, and bathe his flesh in water, and afterward come into the camp.

27 And the bullock for the sin offering, and the goat for the sin offering, whose blood was brought in to make atonement in the holy place, shall one carry forth without the camp; and they shall burn in the fire their skins, and their flesh, and their dung.

28 And he that burneth them shall wash his clothes, and bathe his flesh in water, and afterward he shall come into the camp.

29 And this shall be a statute for ever unto you: that in the seventh month, on the tenth day of the month, ye shall afflict your souls, and do no work at all, whether it be one of your own country, or a stranger that sojourneth among you:

30 For on that day shall the priest make an atonement for you, to cleanse you, that ye may be clean from all your sins before the Lord .

31 It shall be a sabbath of rest unto you, and ye shall afflict your souls, by a statute for ever.

32 And the priest, whom he shall anoint, and whom he shall consecrate to minister in the priest's office in his father's stead, shall make the atonement, and shall put on the linen clothes, even the holy garments:

33 And he shall make an atonement for the holy sanctuary, and he shall make an atonement for the tabernacle of the congregation, and for the altar, and he shall make an atonement for the priests, and for all the people of the congregation.

34 And this shall be an everlasting statute unto you, to make an atonement for the children of Israel for all their sins once a year. And he did as the Lord commanded Moses.

Law of Atonement

16 Now the Lord spoke to Moses after ( A ) the death of the two sons of Aaron, when they had approached the presence of the Lord and died. 2 The Lord said to Moses:

“Tell your brother Aaron that he shall not enter ( B ) at [ a ] any time into the Holy Place inside the veil, before the [ b ] atoning cover which is on the ark, or he will die; for ( C ) I will appear in the cloud over the [ c ] atoning cover. 3 Aaron shall enter the Holy Place with this: with a [ d ] bull as a [ e ] ( D ) sin offering and a ram as a burnt offering. 4 He shall put on the ( E ) holy linen tunic, and the linen undergarments shall be next to his [ f ] body, and he shall be wrapped about the waist with the linen sash and the linen turban wound around his forehead (these are holy garments). He shall ( F ) bathe his [ g ] body in water and put them on. 5 And he shall take from the congregation of the sons of Israel ( G ) two male goats as a [ h ] sin offering, and one ram as a burnt offering. 6 Then ( H ) Aaron shall offer the bull as the [ i ] sin offering, which is for himself, so that he may make atonement for himself and for his household. 7 He shall then take the two goats and present them before the Lord at the doorway of the tent of meeting. 8 Aaron shall cast lots for the two goats, one lot for the Lord and the other lot for [ j ] the [ k ] scapegoat. 9 Then Aaron shall offer the goat on which the lot for the Lord fell, and make it a [ l ] sin offering. 10 But the goat on which the lot for [ m ] the [ n ] scapegoat fell shall be presented alive before the Lord , to make ( I ) atonement upon it, to send it into the wilderness [ o ] as the [ p ] scapegoat.

11 “Then Aaron shall offer the bull of the [ q ] sin offering ( J ) which is for himself and make atonement for himself and ( K ) for his household, and he shall slaughter the bull of the [ r ] sin offering which is for himself. 12 He shall take a ( L ) firepan full of coals of fire from upon the altar before the Lord and [ s ] two handfuls of finely ground ( M ) sweet incense, and bring it inside the veil. 13 He shall put the incense on the fire before the Lord , so that the cloud of incense may cover the ( N ) atoning cover that is on the ark of the testimony, ( O ) otherwise he will die. 14 Moreover, ( P ) he shall take some of the blood of the bull and sprinkle it ( Q ) with his finger on the atoning cover on the east side ; also in front of the atoning cover he shall sprinkle some of the blood with his finger seven times.

15 “Then he shall slaughter the goat of the sin offering, ( R ) which is for the people, and bring its blood inside the veil and do with its blood as he did with the blood of the bull, and sprinkle it on the atoning cover and in front of the atoning cover. 16 ( S ) He shall make atonement for the Holy Place, because of the impurities of the sons of Israel and because of their unlawful acts regarding all their sins; and he shall do so for the tent of meeting which remains with them in the midst of their impurities. 17 When he goes in to make atonement in the Holy Place, no one shall be in the tent of meeting until he comes out, so that he may make atonement for himself and for his household, and for all the assembly of Israel. 18 Then he shall go out to the altar that is before the Lord and make atonement for it; he shall take some of the blood from the bull and some of the blood from the goat, and ( T ) put it on the horns of the altar on all sides. 19 ( U ) With his finger he shall sprinkle some of the blood on it seven times and cleanse it, and consecrate it from the impurities of the sons of Israel.

20 “When he finishes atoning for the Holy Place and the tent of meeting and the altar, he shall offer the live goat. 21 Then Aaron shall lay both of his hands on the head of the live goat, and ( V ) confess over it all the wrongdoings of the sons of Israel and all their unlawful acts regarding all their sins; and he shall place them on the head of the goat and send it away into the wilderness by the hand of a man who stands ready. 22 Then the goat shall carry on itself all their wrongdoings to an [ t ] isolated territory; he shall release the goat in the wilderness.

23 “Then Aaron shall come into the tent of meeting and take off ( W ) the linen garments which he put on when he went into the Holy Place, and shall leave them there. 24 And ( X ) he shall bathe his [ u ] body with water in a holy place and put on ( Y ) his clothes, and come out and offer his burnt offering and the burnt offering of the people, and make atonement for himself and for the people. 25 Then he shall offer up in smoke the fat of the sin offering on the altar. 26 The one who released the goat [ v ] as the [ w ] scapegoat ( Z ) shall wash his clothes and bathe his [ x ] body with water; then afterward he shall come into the camp. 27 But the bull of the [ y ] sin offering and the goat of the [ z ] sin offering, ( AA ) whose blood was brought in to make atonement in the Holy Place, shall be taken outside the camp, and they shall burn their hides, their flesh, and their refuse in the fire. 28 Then the ( AB ) one who burns them shall wash his clothes and bathe his body with water; and afterward he shall come into the camp.

An Annual Atonement

29 This shall be a permanent statute for you: ( AC ) in the seventh month, on the tenth day of the month, you shall humble [ aa ] yourselves and not ( AD ) do any work, whether the native, or the stranger who resides among you; 30 for it is on this day that [ ab ] atonement shall be made for you to ( AE ) cleanse you; you will be clean from all your sins before the Lord . 31 It is to be a Sabbath of solemn rest for you, so that you may ( AF ) humble [ ac ] yourselves; it is a permanent statute. 32 So the priest who is anointed and [ ad ] ordained to serve as priest in his father’s place shall make atonement: he shall put on ( AG ) the linen garments, the holy garments, 33 and make atonement for the holy sanctuary, and he shall make atonement for the tent of meeting and for the altar. He shall also make atonement for ( AH ) the priests and for all the people of the assembly. 34 Now you shall have this as a ( AI ) permanent statute, to ( AJ ) make atonement for the sons of Israel for all their sins once every year.” And just as the Lord had commanded Moses, so he did.

The Day of Atonement ( A )

16 The Lord spoke to Moses after the death of the two sons of Aaron who died when they approached the Lord . ( B ) 2 The Lord said to Moses: “Tell your brother Aaron that he is not to come whenever he chooses ( C ) into the Most Holy Place ( D ) behind the curtain ( E ) in front of the atonement cover ( F ) on the ark, or else he will die. For I will appear ( G ) in the cloud ( H ) over the atonement cover.

3 “This is how Aaron is to enter the Most Holy Place: ( I ) He must first bring a young bull ( J ) for a sin offering [ a ] and a ram for a burnt offering. ( K ) 4 He is to put on the sacred linen tunic, ( L ) with linen undergarments next to his body; he is to tie the linen sash around him and put on the linen turban. ( M ) These are sacred garments; ( N ) so he must bathe himself with water ( O ) before he puts them on. ( P ) 5 From the Israelite community ( Q ) he is to take two male goats ( R ) for a sin offering and a ram for a burnt offering.

6 “Aaron is to offer the bull for his own sin offering to make atonement for himself and his household. ( S ) 7 Then he is to take the two goats and present them before the Lord at the entrance to the tent of meeting. 8 He is to cast lots ( T ) for the two goats—one lot for the Lord and the other for the scapegoat. [ b ] ( U ) 9 Aaron shall bring the goat whose lot falls to the Lord and sacrifice it for a sin offering. 10 But the goat chosen by lot as the scapegoat shall be presented alive before the Lord to be used for making atonement ( V ) by sending it into the wilderness as a scapegoat.

11 “Aaron shall bring the bull for his own sin offering to make atonement for himself and his household, ( W ) and he is to slaughter the bull for his own sin offering. 12 He is to take a censer full of burning coals ( X ) from the altar before the Lord and two handfuls of finely ground fragrant incense ( Y ) and take them behind the curtain. 13 He is to put the incense on the fire before the Lord , and the smoke of the incense will conceal the atonement cover ( Z ) above the tablets of the covenant law, so that he will not die. ( AA ) 14 He is to take some of the bull’s blood ( AB ) and with his finger sprinkle it on the front of the atonement cover; then he shall sprinkle some of it with his finger seven times before the atonement cover. ( AC )

15 “He shall then slaughter the goat for the sin offering for the people ( AD ) and take its blood behind the curtain ( AE ) and do with it as he did with the bull’s blood: He shall sprinkle ( AF ) it on the atonement cover and in front of it. 16 In this way he will make atonement ( AG ) for the Most Holy Place ( AH ) because of the uncleanness and rebellion of the Israelites, whatever their sins have been. He is to do the same for the tent of meeting, ( AI ) which is among them in the midst of their uncleanness. 17 No one is to be in the tent of meeting from the time Aaron goes in to make atonement in the Most Holy Place until he comes out, having made atonement for himself, his household and the whole community of Israel.

18 “Then he shall come out to the altar ( AJ ) that is before the Lord and make atonement for it. He shall take some of the bull’s blood and some of the goat’s blood and put it on all the horns of the altar. ( AK ) 19 He shall sprinkle some of the blood on it with his finger seven times to cleanse it and to consecrate it from the uncleanness of the Israelites. ( AL )

20 “When Aaron has finished making atonement for the Most Holy Place, the tent of meeting and the altar, he shall bring forward the live goat. ( AM ) 21 He is to lay both hands on the head of the live goat ( AN ) and confess ( AO ) over it all the wickedness and rebellion of the Israelites—all their sins—and put them on the goat’s head. He shall send the goat away into the wilderness in the care of someone appointed for the task. 22 The goat will carry on itself all their sins ( AP ) to a remote place; and the man shall release it in the wilderness.

23 “Then Aaron is to go into the tent of meeting and take off the linen garments ( AQ ) he put on before he entered the Most Holy Place, and he is to leave them there. ( AR ) 24 He shall bathe himself with water in the sanctuary area ( AS ) and put on his regular garments. ( AT ) Then he shall come out and sacrifice the burnt offering for himself and the burnt offering for the people, ( AU ) to make atonement for himself and for the people. ( AV ) 25 He shall also burn the fat of the sin offering on the altar.

26 “The man who releases the goat as a scapegoat ( AW ) must wash his clothes ( AX ) and bathe himself with water; ( AY ) afterward he may come into the camp. 27 The bull and the goat for the sin offerings, whose blood was brought into the Most Holy Place to make atonement, must be taken outside the camp; ( AZ ) their hides, flesh and intestines are to be burned up. 28 The man who burns them must wash his clothes and bathe himself with water; afterward he may come into the camp. ( BA )

29 “This is to be a lasting ordinance ( BB ) for you: On the tenth day of the seventh month ( BC ) you must deny yourselves [ c ] ( BD ) and not do any work ( BE ) —whether native-born ( BF ) or a foreigner residing among you— 30 because on this day atonement will be made ( BG ) for you, to cleanse you. Then, before the Lord , you will be clean from all your sins. ( BH ) 31 It is a day of sabbath rest, and you must deny yourselves; ( BI ) it is a lasting ordinance. ( BJ ) 32 The priest who is anointed and ordained ( BK ) to succeed his father as high priest is to make atonement. He is to put on the sacred linen garments ( BL ) 33 and make atonement for the Most Holy Place, for the tent of meeting and the altar, and for the priests and all the members of the community. ( BM )

34 “This is to be a lasting ordinance ( BN ) for you: Atonement is to be made once a year ( BO ) for all the sins of the Israelites.”

And it was done, as the Lord commanded Moses.
