The people agree to serve the Lord

24 Joshua called all the Israelite tribes to meet together at Shechem. [ a ] He called the leaders of clans, the rulers, the judges and the officers to stand in front of the tabernacle. 2 Joshua said to the people, ‘This is what the Lord , Israel's God, says:

“A long time ago, your ancestors lived on the other side of the Euphrates river. They included Terah who was the father of Abraham and Nahor. They worshipped other gods. 3 But I took Abraham, your ancestor, away from that land beyond the Euphrates river. I brought him here and I led him through all the land of Canaan. I gave him many descendants. I gave him a son, Isaac. 4 I gave to Isaac two sons, Jacob and Esau. I gave to Esau the hills of Seir. But Jacob and his sons went down to live in Egypt.

5 I sent Moses and Aaron to lead the Israelites when they were in Egypt. I punished the people of Egypt, and I brought you out from there. 6 When I brought your ancestors out of Egypt, they reached the Red Sea. The Egyptians chased after them to the sea, with soldiers on horses and in chariots. 7 But your ancestors called to the Lord for help. He made the space between them and the Egyptians become dark. He caused the Egyptian soldiers to drown in the sea. Your ancestors saw what I did to the Egyptians with their own eyes. After that, they lived in the desert for a long time.

8 I brought you to the land of the Amorites, on the east side of the Jordan River. They fought against you, but I helped you to win the fight. I destroyed them in front of you, and you took their land. 9 The king of Moab, Zippor's son Balak, prepared to attack you. When he did this, he asked Balaam, son of Beor, to curse you. 10 But I would not listen to Balaam. So he could not curse you but he continued to bless you. In that way I saved you from Balak's power.

11 Then you went across the Jordan River and you came to Jericho city. The people of Jericho fought against you. So did the Amorites, Perizzites, Canaanites, Hittites, Girgashites, Hivites and Jebusites. I helped you to win against all those people. 12 I sent great fear on your enemies as you moved into the land. [ b ] I chased them all away, as well as the two kings of the Amorites. You did not win because of your strong weapons, but because of me. 13 The land was a gift from me. I gave you a land where you had not worked in its fields. I gave you towns to live in that you did not build. You eat grapes and olives from trees that you did not plant.” ’

14 Joshua said to the people, ‘Now you must serve the Lord with fear. You must worship him. You must continue to trust him. Throw away the gods that your ancestors worshipped when they lived beyond the Euphrates river and in Egypt. Worship the Lord . 15 But if you refuse to serve the Lord , then you should choose another god to worship. Decide today! Will you serve the gods that your ancestors worshipped across the river? Will you serve the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are now living? You choose! But as for me and my family, we will serve the Lord .’

16 The people answered Joshua, ‘We would never turn against the Lord to serve other gods! 17 We and our fathers were slaves in Egypt. But the Lord our God brought us out from there. We saw the great miracles that he did there. He kept us safe all the time on our journey, as we travelled through other nations. 18 The Lord chased all the nations out as we moved into the land. He chased out the Amorites and the other people who lived in the land. So we too will serve the Lord , because he is our God.’

19 Joshua said to them, ‘The Lord is a holy God. You will not be able to serve him. He wants you to belong to him. If you turn against him or you do not obey him, he will not forgive you. 20 If you turn away from the Lord and you serve foreign gods, he will turn against you. He has been kind and he has helped you until now. But he will bring trouble to you and he will destroy you, if you turn away from him.’

21 The people said to Joshua, ‘Never! We will only serve the Lord .’

22 Joshua said to them, ‘You yourselves have chosen to serve the Lord . Agree now that you have done that.’

They replied, ‘Yes, we agree!’

23 Joshua said, ‘So now you must throw away the foreign gods that you still keep. Trust the Lord , Israel's God, and obey him.’

24 The people said to Joshua, ‘We will serve the Lord our God and we will obey him.’

25 That same day, Joshua made an agreement for the people to accept. There at Shechem, he made a list of rules and laws for them to obey. 26 Joshua wrote these things in the Book of God's Law. Then he took a big stone. He stood it there under the oak tree that was near the Lord 's holy place.

27 Joshua said to all the people, ‘Look at this stone! It has heard everything that the Lord has said to us today! It will speak against you if you fail to obey your God!’ [ c ]

28 Then Joshua sent the people away. They went to the parts of the land that now belonged to each of them.

Joshua dies

29 After this, the Lord 's servant, Joshua, son of Nun, died at the age of 110. 30 The Israelites buried him in his own land that was at Timnah Serah. That was in the hill country of Ephraim, north of Mount Gaash.

31 The people of Israel continued to serve the Lord while Joshua and the old men were still alive. Joshua and those men had seen everything that the Lord had done to help Israel.

32 The Israelites had brought Joseph's bones up from Egypt, to bury him at Shechem. [ d ] This land was in the field that Jacob had bought from the sons of Hamor, Shechem's father. Jacob had paid them 100 pieces of silver for the land. Now the land belonged to Joseph's descendants.

33 Aaron's son, Eleazar, also died. The people buried him at Gibeah, in the hill country of Ephraim. That land had been given to Eleazar's son Phinehas.

Footnotes

  1. 24:1 Shechem was an important place. When Abraham came to Shechem, God had said to him, ‘I will give this land to your people.’ See Genesis 12:7 . Now the people lived in the land.
  2. 24:12 ‘fear’ or ‘insects that bite’
  3. 24:27 The stone could not really hear or speak. But Joshua wanted the people to remember what they had promised to God. The stone would help them to remember their promises.
  4. 24:32 Genesis 50:22-26

Joshua Says Goodbye

24 Joshua called all the tribes of Israel to meet together at Shechem. Then Joshua called the older leaders, heads of the families, judges, and the officers of Israel. These men stood before God.

2 Then Joshua spoke to all the people. He said, “I am telling you what the Lord , the God of Israel, says to you: ‘A long time ago, your ancestors lived on the other side of the Euphrates River. I am talking about men like Terah, the father of Abraham and Nahor. At that time they worshiped other gods. 3 But I took your father Abraham out of the land on the other side of the River. I led him through the land of Canaan and gave him many children. I gave Abraham his son Isaac. 4 And I gave Isaac two sons, Jacob and Esau. To Esau, I gave the land around the mountains of Seir. Jacob and his sons did not live there. They went to live in the land of Egypt.

5 “‘Then I sent Moses and Aaron to Egypt. I wanted them to bring my people out of Egypt. I caused many terrible things to happen to the people of Egypt. Then I brought your people out of Egypt. 6 When I brought your ancestors out of Egypt, they came to the Red Sea, and the men of Egypt were chasing them. There were chariots and men on horses. 7 So the people asked me, the Lord , for help. And I caused great trouble to come to the men of Egypt. I caused the sea to cover them. You yourselves saw what I did to the army of Egypt.

“‘After that you lived in the desert for a long time. 8 Then I brought you to the land of the Amorites, east of the Jordan River. Those people fought against you, but I allowed you to defeat them. I gave you the power to destroy them, and you took control of that land.

9 “‘Then Balak, the son of Zippor, the king of Moab, prepared to fight against the Israelites. The king sent for Balaam the son of Beor to curse you, 10 but I refused to listen to Balaam’s prayer. So he asked me to bless you, and I saved you from the enemy.

11 “‘Then you went across the Jordan River to the city of Jericho. The people in Jericho fought against you. Also, the Amorites, Perizzites, Canaanites, Hittites, Girgashites, Hivites, and Jebusites fought against you. But I allowed you to defeat them all. 12 As your army went forward, I sent the Hornet [ a ] ahead of them and made the people leave the land, as I did to the two Amorite kings. [ b ] It was not your swords and bows that brought you victory!

13 “‘I, the Lord, gave that land to you. You didn’t work for that land—I gave it to you. You did not build those cities—I gave them to you. And now you live in that land and in those cities. You have vineyards and olive trees, but you did not have to plant those gardens.’”

14 Then Joshua said to the people, “Now you have heard the Lord’s words. So you must respect the Lord and sincerely serve him. Throw away the false gods that your ancestors worshiped. That was something that happened a long time ago on the other side of the Euphrates River and in Egypt. Now you must serve only the Lord .

15 “But maybe you don’t want to serve the Lord . You must choose for yourselves today. Today you must decide who you will serve. Will you serve the gods that your ancestors worshiped when they lived on the other side of the Euphrates River? Or will you serve the gods of the Amorites who lived in this land? You must choose for yourselves. But as for me and my family, we will serve the Lord .”

16 Then the people answered, “We will never stop following the Lord . We will never serve other gods! 17 We know that it was the Lord God who brought our people out of Egypt. We were slaves in that land, but he did great things for us there. He brought us out of that land and protected us while we traveled through other lands. 18 The Lord helped us defeat the people living in these lands. He helped us defeat the Amorites who lived in this land where we are now. So we will continue to serve the Lord , because he is our God.”

19 Then Joshua said, “You will not be able to continue serving the Lord . God is holy. And God hates his people worshiping other gods. He will not forgive you if you turn against him like that. 20 If you leave the Lord and serve other gods, he will cause terrible things to happen to you. He will destroy you. He has been good to you, but if you turn against him he will destroy you.”

21 Then the people said to Joshua, “No, we will serve the Lord !”

22 Then Joshua said, “Look around at yourselves and the people with you. Do you all know and agree that you have chosen to serve the Lord ? Are you all witnesses to this?”

The people answered, “Yes, it is true. We all see that we have chosen to serve the Lord .”

23 Then Joshua said, “So throw away the false gods that you have among you. Love the Lord , the God of Israel, with all your heart.”

24 Then the people said to Joshua, “We will serve the Lord our God. We will obey him.”

25 So that day Joshua made an agreement for the people. He made this agreement at the town called Shechem. It became a law for them to follow. 26 Joshua wrote these things in the Book of the Law of God . Then he found a large stone to be the proof of this agreement. He put the stone under the oak tree near the Lord ’s Holy Tent.

27 Then Joshua said to all the people, “This stone will help you remember what we said today. This stone was here when the Lord was speaking to us today. So this stone will be something that helps you remember what happened today. The stone will be a witness against you. It will stop you from turning against your God.”

28 Then Joshua told the people to go home. So everyone went back to his own land.

Joshua Dies

29 After that the Lord ’s servant Joshua son of Nun died. He was 110 years old. 30 Joshua was buried on his own land at Timnath Serah, in the hill country of Ephraim, north of Mount Gaash.

31 The Israelites served the Lord during the time Joshua was living. After Joshua died, the people continued to serve the Lord while their leaders were alive. These were the leaders who had seen what the Lord had done for Israel.

Joseph Comes Home

32 When the Israelites left Egypt, they carried the bones from the body of Joseph with them. They buried the bones of Joseph at Shechem on the land that Jacob had bought from the sons of Hamor, the father of the man named Shechem. Jacob had bought that land for 100 pieces of pure silver. This land belonged to Joseph’s children.

33 Aaron’s son, Eleazar, died and was buried at Gibeah in the hill country of Ephraim. Gibeah had been given to Eleazar’s son Phinehas.

Footnotes

  1. Joshua 24:12 Hornet A stinging insect like a large wasp or bee. Here, it probably means God’s angel or his great power.
  2. Joshua 24:12 The Hebrew text here is hard to understand, but it may refer to the events described in Num. 21:21-35 and Deut. 2:24-3:10.

24 And Joshua gathered all the tribes of Israel to Shechem, and called for the elders of Israel, and for their heads, and for their judges, and for their officers; and they presented themselves before God.

2 And Joshua said unto all the people, Thus saith the Lord God of Israel, Your fathers dwelt on the other side of the flood in old time, even Terah, the father of Abraham, and the father of Nachor: and they served other gods.

3 And I took your father Abraham from the other side of the flood, and led him throughout all the land of Canaan, and multiplied his seed, and gave him Isaac.

4 And I gave unto Isaac Jacob and Esau: and I gave unto Esau mount Seir, to possess it; but Jacob and his children went down into Egypt.

5 I sent Moses also and Aaron, and I plagued Egypt, according to that which I did among them: and afterward I brought you out.

6 And I brought your fathers out of Egypt: and ye came unto the sea; and the Egyptians pursued after your fathers with chariots and horsemen unto the Red sea.

7 And when they cried unto the Lord , he put darkness between you and the Egyptians, and brought the sea upon them, and covered them; and your eyes have seen what I have done in Egypt: and ye dwelt in the wilderness a long season.

8 And I brought you into the land of the Amorites, which dwelt on the other side Jordan; and they fought with you: and I gave them into your hand, that ye might possess their land; and I destroyed them from before you.

9 Then Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab, arose and warred against Israel, and sent and called Balaam the son of Beor to curse you:

10 But I would not hearken unto Balaam; therefore he blessed you still: so I delivered you out of his hand.

11 And you went over Jordan, and came unto Jericho: and the men of Jericho fought against you, the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Girgashites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites; and I delivered them into your hand.

12 And I sent the hornet before you, which drave them out from before you, even the two kings of the Amorites; but not with thy sword, nor with thy bow.

13 And I have given you a land for which ye did not labour, and cities which ye built not, and ye dwell in them; of the vineyards and oliveyards which ye planted not do ye eat.

14 Now therefore fear the Lord , and serve him in sincerity and in truth: and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the flood, and in Egypt; and serve ye the Lord .

15 And if it seem evil unto you to serve the Lord , choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord .

16 And the people answered and said, God forbid that we should forsake the Lord , to serve other gods;

17 For the Lord our God, he it is that brought us up and our fathers out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage, and which did those great signs in our sight, and preserved us in all the way wherein we went, and among all the people through whom we passed:

18 And the Lord drave out from before us all the people, even the Amorites which dwelt in the land: therefore will we also serve the Lord ; for he is our God.

19 And Joshua said unto the people, Ye cannot serve the Lord : for he is an holy God; he is a jealous God; he will not forgive your transgressions nor your sins.

20 If ye forsake the Lord , and serve strange gods, then he will turn and do you hurt, and consume you, after that he hath done you good.

21 And the people said unto Joshua, Nay; but we will serve the Lord .

22 And Joshua said unto the people, Ye are witnesses against yourselves that ye have chosen you the Lord , to serve him. And they said, We are witnesses.

23 Now therefore put away, said he, the strange gods which are among you, and incline your heart unto the Lord God of Israel.

24 And the people said unto Joshua, The Lord our God will we serve, and his voice will we obey.

25 So Joshua made a covenant with the people that day, and set them a statute and an ordinance in Shechem.

26 And Joshua wrote these words in the book of the law of God, and took a great stone, and set it up there under an oak, that was by the sanctuary of the Lord .

27 And Joshua said unto all the people, Behold, this stone shall be a witness unto us; for it hath heard all the words of the Lord which he spake unto us: it shall be therefore a witness unto you, lest ye deny your God.

28 So Joshua let the people depart, every man unto his inheritance.

29 And it came to pass after these things, that Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of the Lord , died, being an hundred and ten years old.

30 And they buried him in the border of his inheritance in Timnathserah, which is in mount Ephraim, on the north side of the hill of Gaash.

31 And Israel served the Lord all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders that overlived Joshua, and which had known all the works of the Lord , that he had done for Israel.

32 And the bones of Joseph, which the children of Israel brought up out of Egypt, buried they in Shechem, in a parcel of ground which Jacob bought of the sons of Hamor the father of Shechem for an hundred pieces of silver: and it became the inheritance of the children of Joseph.

33 And Eleazar the son of Aaron died; and they buried him in a hill that pertained to Phinehas his son, which was given him in mount Ephraim.

Joshua Reviews Israel’s History

24 Then ( A ) Joshua gathered all the tribes of Israel at Shechem, and called for the elders of Israel, their heads, their judges, and their officers; and they presented themselves before God. 2 Joshua said to all the people, “This is what the Lord , the God of Israel says: ‘From ancient times your fathers lived beyond the Euphrates River, namely , ( B ) Terah, the father of Abraham and the father of Nahor, and they served other gods. 3 Then ( C ) I took your father Abraham from beyond the Euphrates River and led him through all the land of Canaan, and ( D ) multiplied his [ a ] descendants and gave him ( E ) Isaac. 4 To Isaac I gave ( F ) Jacob and Esau, and ( G ) to Esau I gave Mount Seir, to possess it; but ( H ) Jacob and his sons went down to Egypt. 5 Then ( I ) I sent Moses and Aaron, and I plagued Egypt [ b ] by what I did in its midst; and afterward I brought you out. 6 So I brought your fathers out of Egypt, and ( J ) you came to the sea; and Egypt pursued your fathers with chariots and horsemen to the [ c ] Red Sea. 7 But when they cried out to the Lord , He put darkness between you and the Egyptians, and brought the sea upon them and covered them; and your own eyes saw what I did in Egypt. And ( K ) you lived in the wilderness for a long time. 8 Then ( L ) I brought you into the land of the Amorites, who lived beyond the Jordan, and they fought with you; but I handed them over to you, and you took possession of their land when I eliminated them before you. 9 Then ( M ) Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab, rose up and fought against Israel, and he sent messengers and summoned Balaam the son of Beor to curse you. 10 But I ( N ) was not willing to listen to Balaam. So he had to bless you, and I saved you from his hand. 11 ( O ) You crossed the Jordan and came to Jericho; and the citizens of Jericho fought against you, and ( P ) the Amorite, the Perizzite, the Canaanite, the Hittite, the Girgashite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite. Therefore ( Q ) I handed them over to you. 12 Then I ( R ) sent the hornet before you and it [ d ] drove out the two kings of the Amorites from you— ( S ) not by your sword nor your bow. 13 And ( T ) I gave you a land on which you had not labored, and cities which you had not built, and you have lived in them; you are eating of vineyards and olive groves which you did not plant.’

“We Will Serve the Lord

14 “Now, therefore, [ e ] ( U ) fear the Lord and serve Him in sincerity and [ f ] truth; and do away with the gods which your fathers served beyond the Euphrates River and in Egypt, and serve the Lord . 15 But if it is disagreeable in your sight to serve the Lord , choose for yourselves today whom you will serve: whether the gods which your fathers served, which were beyond the Euphrates River, or ( V ) the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living; but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord .”

16 The people answered and said, “Far be it from us that we would abandon the Lord to serve other gods; 17 for the Lord our God is He who brought us and our fathers up out of the land of Egypt, from the house of slaves, and did these great signs in our sight and watched over us through all the way in which we went and among all the peoples through whose midst we passed. 18 The Lord drove out from before us all the peoples, even the Amorites who lived in the land. We also will serve the Lord , for He is our God.”

19 Then Joshua said to the people, “You will not be able to serve the Lord , ( W ) for He is a holy God. He is ( X ) a jealous God; ( Y ) He will not forgive your wrongdoing or your sins. 20 ( Z ) If you abandon the Lord and serve foreign gods, then He will turn and do you harm and destroy you after He has done good to you.” 21 And the people said to Joshua, “No, but we will serve the Lord .” 22 So Joshua said to the people, “You are witnesses against yourselves that ( AA ) you have chosen for yourselves the Lord , to serve Him.” And they said, “ We are witnesses.” 23 “Now then, do away with the foreign gods which are in your midst, and ( AB ) incline your hearts to the Lord , the God of Israel.” 24 And ( AC ) the people said to Joshua, “We will serve the Lord our God and [ g ] obey His voice.” 25 ( AD ) So Joshua made a covenant with the people that day, and made for them a statute and an ordinance in Shechem. 26 And Joshua ( AE ) wrote these words in the Book of the Law of God; and he took a large stone and set it up there under the oak that was by the sanctuary of the Lord . 27 Then Joshua said to all the people, “Behold, ( AF ) this stone shall be a witness against us, because it has heard all the words of the Lord which He spoke [ h ] to us; so it shall be a witness against you, so that you do not deny your God.” 28 Then Joshua dismissed the people, each to his inheritance.

Joshua’s Death and Burial

29 Now it came about after these things that Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of the Lord , died, being 110 years old. 30 And they buried him in the territory of his inheritance, in ( AG ) Timnath-serah, which is in the hill country of Ephraim, on the north of Mount Gaash.

31 ( AH ) Israel served the Lord all the days of Joshua and all the days of the elders who [ i ] survived Joshua, and had known every deed of the Lord which He had done for Israel.

32 Now ( AI ) they buried the bones of Joseph, which the sons of Israel brought up from Egypt, at Shechem, in the plot of land ( AJ ) which Jacob had bought from the sons of Hamor the father of Shechem for a hundred [ j ] pieces of money; and they became the inheritance of Joseph’s sons. 33 And Eleazar the son of Aaron died; and they buried him at Gibeah, the town of his son ( AK ) Phinehas, which was given to him in the hill country of Ephraim.

The Covenant Renewed at Shechem

24 Then Joshua assembled ( A ) all the tribes of Israel at Shechem. ( B ) He summoned ( C ) the elders, ( D ) leaders, judges and officials of Israel, ( E ) and they presented themselves before God.

2 Joshua said to all the people, “This is what the Lord , the God of Israel, says: ‘Long ago your ancestors, including Terah the father of Abraham and Nahor, ( F ) lived beyond the Euphrates River and worshiped other gods. ( G ) 3 But I took your father Abraham from the land beyond the Euphrates and led him throughout Canaan ( H ) and gave him many descendants. ( I ) I gave him Isaac, ( J ) 4 and to Isaac I gave Jacob and Esau. ( K ) I assigned the hill country of Seir ( L ) to Esau, but Jacob and his family went down to Egypt. ( M )

5 “‘Then I sent Moses and Aaron, ( N ) and I afflicted the Egyptians by what I did there, and I brought you out. ( O ) 6 When I brought your people out of Egypt, you came to the sea, ( P ) and the Egyptians pursued them with chariots and horsemen [ a ] ( Q ) as far as the Red Sea. [ b ] ( R ) 7 But they cried ( S ) to the Lord for help, and he put darkness ( T ) between you and the Egyptians; he brought the sea over them and covered them. ( U ) You saw with your own eyes what I did to the Egyptians. ( V ) Then you lived in the wilderness for a long time. ( W )

8 “‘I brought you to the land of the Amorites ( X ) who lived east of the Jordan. They fought against you, but I gave them into your hands. I destroyed them from before you, and you took possession of their land. ( Y ) 9 When Balak son of Zippor, ( Z ) the king of Moab, prepared to fight against Israel, he sent for Balaam son of Beor ( AA ) to put a curse on you. ( AB ) 10 But I would not listen to Balaam, so he blessed you ( AC ) again and again, and I delivered you out of his hand.

11 “‘Then you crossed the Jordan ( AD ) and came to Jericho. ( AE ) The citizens of Jericho fought against you, as did also the Amorites, Perizzites, ( AF ) Canaanites, Hittites, Girgashites, Hivites and Jebusites, ( AG ) but I gave them into your hands. ( AH ) 12 I sent the hornet ( AI ) ahead of you, which drove them out ( AJ ) before you—also the two Amorite kings. You did not do it with your own sword and bow. ( AK ) 13 So I gave you a land ( AL ) on which you did not toil and cities you did not build; and you live in them and eat from vineyards and olive groves that you did not plant.’ ( AM )

14 “Now fear the Lord ( AN ) and serve him with all faithfulness. ( AO ) Throw away the gods ( AP ) your ancestors worshiped beyond the Euphrates River and in Egypt, ( AQ ) and serve the Lord . 15 But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, ( AR ) in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, ( AS ) we will serve the Lord .” ( AT )

16 Then the people answered, “Far be it from us to forsake ( AU ) the Lord to serve other gods! 17 It was the Lord our God himself who brought us and our parents up out of Egypt, from that land of slavery, ( AV ) and performed those great signs ( AW ) before our eyes. He protected us on our entire journey and among all the nations through which we traveled. 18 And the Lord drove out ( AX ) before us all the nations, ( AY ) including the Amorites, who lived in the land. ( AZ ) We too will serve the Lord , because he is our God. ( BA )

19 Joshua said to the people, “You are not able to serve the Lord . He is a holy God; ( BB ) he is a jealous God. ( BC ) He will not forgive ( BD ) your rebellion ( BE ) and your sins. 20 If you forsake the Lord ( BF ) and serve foreign gods, he will turn ( BG ) and bring disaster ( BH ) on you and make an end of you, ( BI ) after he has been good to you.”

21 But the people said to Joshua, “No! We will serve the Lord .”

22 Then Joshua said, “You are witnesses ( BJ ) against yourselves that you have chosen ( BK ) to serve the Lord .”

“Yes, we are witnesses, ( BL ) ” they replied.

23 “Now then,” said Joshua, “throw away the foreign gods ( BM ) that are among you and yield your hearts ( BN ) to the Lord , the God of Israel.”

24 And the people said to Joshua, “We will serve the Lord our God and obey him.” ( BO )

25 On that day Joshua made a covenant ( BP ) for the people, and there at Shechem ( BQ ) he reaffirmed for them decrees and laws. ( BR ) 26 And Joshua recorded ( BS ) these things in the Book of the Law of God. ( BT ) Then he took a large stone ( BU ) and set it up there under the oak ( BV ) near the holy place of the Lord .

27 “See!” he said to all the people. “This stone ( BW ) will be a witness ( BX ) against us. It has heard all the words the Lord has said to us. It will be a witness against you if you are untrue ( BY ) to your God.” ( BZ )

28 Then Joshua dismissed the people, each to their own inheritance. ( CA )

Buried in the Promised Land ( CB )

29 After these things, Joshua son of Nun, the servant of the Lord , died ( CC ) at the age of a hundred and ten. ( CD ) 30 And they buried him in the land of his inheritance, at Timnath Serah [ c ] ( CE ) in the hill country of Ephraim, north of Mount Gaash. ( CF )
