Towns for the Levites

21 The leaders of the Levite families came to speak to Joshua, son of Nun. Eleazar the priest and the leaders of the other tribes were also there. 2 They met at Shiloh in the land of Canaan. The Levites said, ‘The Lord told Moses that you must give us towns to live in, as well as land for our animals.’ [ a ]

3 So the Israelites did as the Lord had told them. They gave to the Levites towns to live in and land for their animals. They gave these from their own land.

4 They gave towns first to the clans of Kohath. They gave 13 towns from the tribes of Judah, Simeon and Benjamin. They gave these to Levites who were descendants of Aaron, the priest. 5 They also gave to the other descendants of Kohath, towns from the tribes of Ephraim, Dan and the west half of Manasseh.

6 Then they gave 13 towns to the descendants of Gershon. Those towns came from the tribes of Issachar, Asher, Naphtali and the east half of Manasseh in Bashan.

7 They gave 12 towns to the descendants of Merari. Those towns came from the tribes of Reuben, Gad and Zebulun.

8 In that way, the Israelites gave these towns to the Levites, as well as land for their animals. They used lots to do it. They did as the Lord had told Moses to do.

9 These are the names of the towns that the tribes of Simeon and Judah gave to the Levites. 10 The Kohathite clans who were descendants of Aaron received these towns, because God chose them first.

11 They received Kiriath Arba (or Hebron), with land near to it, in the hill country of Judah. Arba was the father of Anak. 12 But the fields and villages near Hebron belonged to Caleb, son of Jephunneh. 13 Hebron was one of the safe cities. The descendants of Aaron, the priest, received Hebron, Libnah, 14 Jattir, Eshtemoa, 15 Holon, Debir, 16 Ain, Juttah and Beth Shemesh, as well as their fields. These two tribes gave them nine towns. 17 Benjamin's tribe also gave four towns to them: Gibeon, Geba, 18 Anathoth and Almon, as well as their fields.

19 So the priests, descendants of Aaron, received 13 towns with their fields.

20 The tribe of Ephraim gave some towns to Levites from other clans of Kohath. 21 They gave them Shechem, a safe city, in the hill country of Ephraim, as well as Gezer, 22 Kibzaim and Beth Horon, with their fields. That was four towns. 23 The tribe of Dan gave them Eltekeh, Gibbethon, 24 Aijalon, and Gath-Rimmon. That was another four towns with their fields. 25 The west half tribe of Manasseh gave them Taanach and Gath-Rimmon, with their fields. That was two towns.

26 So these Kohathite clans received ten towns with their fields.

27 The Levites from the clans of Gershon received these towns. The east half tribe of Manasseh gave them Golan in Bashan, a safe city, and Be Eshtarah. That was two towns, as well as their fields. 28 The tribe of Issachar gave them Kishion, Daberath, 29 Jarmuth and En Gannim, with their fields. That was another four towns. 30 The tribe of Asher gave them Mishal, Abdon, 31 Helkath and Rehob, with their fields. That was four more towns. 32 The tribe of Naphtali gave them Kedesh in Galilee, a safe city, Hammoth Dor and Kartan, with their fields. That was three towns.

33 So the clans of Gershon received 13 cities with their fields.

34 The other Levites were from the clan of Merari. The tribe of Zebulun gave them Jokneam, Kartah, 35 Dimnah and Nahalal. That was four towns, as well as their fields. 36 The tribe of Reuben gave them Bezer, Jahaz, 37 Kedemoth and Mephaath, with their fields. That was four towns. 38 The tribe of Gad gave them Ramoth in Gilead, a safe city, Mahanaim, 39 Heshbon and Jazer, with their fields. That was four more towns.

40 So the clans of Merari received 12 towns. That was all the Levite clans.

41 The Levites received 48 towns in the land of the Israelite people. 42 Each of these towns had its own fields round it, for animals to eat the grass.

43 That is how the Lord gave the land to all the Israelite people. He had promised their ancestors that he would give the land to them. They took it from the people who had lived there, and then they lived there themselves. 44 The Lord let them live there safely, as he had promised to their ancestors. The Lord made them stronger than their enemies, so nobody could attack them. 45 The Lord did all the good things that he had promised to do for the people of Israel. He did not fail to do anything that he had promised.

Towns for Priests and Levites

21 The family rulers of the Levite tribe went to talk to Eleazar the priest, to Joshua son of Nun, and to the rulers of the other tribes of Israel. 2 At Shiloh in the land of Canaan, the Levite rulers said to them, “The Lord gave Moses a command. He commanded that you give us towns to live in and that you give us fields where our animals can eat.” 3 So the Israelites obeyed this command from the Lord and gave the Levites these towns and the land around them for their animals:

4 The Kohath family groups were descendants of Aaron the priest from the tribe of Levi. Part of the Kohath family was given 13 towns in the areas that belonged to Judah, Simeon, and Benjamin.

5 The other Kohath families were given ten towns in the areas that belonged to Ephraim, Dan, and half of Manasseh.

6 The people from the Gershon family were given 13 towns. These towns were in the areas that belonged to Issachar, Asher, Naphtali, and the half of Manasseh that was in Bashan.

7 The people from the Merari family were given 12 towns. These towns came from the areas that belonged to Reuben, Gad, and Zebulun.

8 So the Israelites gave the Levites these towns and the fields around them, just as the Lord had told Moses.

9 These are the names of the towns that were in the areas that belonged to Judah and Simeon. 10 The first choice of towns was given to the Levites from the Kohath family group. 11 They gave them Kiriath Arba. (This is Hebron. It was named for a man named Arba. Arba was the father of Anak.) They also gave them some land near the town for their animals. 12 But the fields and the small towns around the city of Kiriath Arba belonged to Caleb son of Jephunneh. 13 So they gave the city of Hebron to Aaron’s descendants. (Hebron was a city of safety.) They also gave Aaron’s descendants the towns of Libnah, 14 Jattir, Eshtemoa, 15 Holon, Debir, 16 Ain, Juttah, and Beth Shemesh. They also gave them some of the land near these towns for their animals. These two tribes gave them nine towns.

17 They also gave Aaron’s descendants cities that belonged to the tribe of Benjamin. These cities were Gibeon, Geba, 18 Anathoth, and Almon. They gave them these four towns and some of the land near the towns for their animals. 19 In all, they gave 13 towns to the priests. (All priests were descendants of Aaron.) They also gave them some land near each town for their animals.

20 The other people from the Kohathite family groups were given towns that were in the areas that belonged to the tribe of Ephraim. They got these towns: 21 the city of Shechem from the hill country of Ephraim (which was a city of safety), Gezer, 22 Kibzaim, and Beth Horon. In all, Ephraim gave them four towns and some land around each town for their animals.

23 The tribe of Dan gave them Eltekeh, Gibbethon, 24 Aijalon, and Gath Rimmon. In all, Dan gave them four towns and some land around each town for their animals.

25 Half the tribe of Manasseh gave them Taanach and Gath Rimmon. In all, this half of Manasseh gave them two towns and some land around each town for their animals.

26 In all, the rest of the people from the Kohath family groups got ten towns and some land around each town for their animals.

27 The Gershon family groups were also from the tribe of Levi. They got these towns:

Half the tribe of Manasseh gave them Golan in Bashan. (Golan was a city of safety.) Manasseh also gave them Be Eshtarah. In all, this half of Manasseh gave them two towns and some land around each town for their animals.

28 The tribe of Issachar gave them Kishion, Daberath, 29 Jarmuth, and En Gannim. In all, Issachar gave them four towns and some land around each town for their animals.

30 The tribe of Asher gave them Mishal, Abdon, 31 Helkath, and Rehob. In all, Asher gave them four towns and some land around each town for their animals.

32 The tribe of Naphtali gave them Kedesh in Galilee. (Kedesh was a city of safety.) Naphtali also gave them Hammoth Dor and Kartan. In all, Naphtali gave them three towns and some land around each town for their animals.

33 In all, the Gershon family groups got 13 towns and some land around each town for their animals.

34-39 The other Levite group was the Merari family group. They were given these towns: The tribe of Zebulun gave them Jokneam, Kartah, Dimnah, and Nahalal. In all, Zebulun gave them four towns and some land around each town for their animals. The tribe of Reuben gave them Bezer, Jahaz, Kedemoth, and Mephaath. In all, Reuben gave them four towns and some land around each town for their animals. The tribe of Gad gave them Ramoth in Gilead. (Ramoth was a city of safety.) They also gave them Mahanaim, Heshbon, and Jazer. In all, Gad gave them four towns and some land around each town for their animals.

40 In all, the last family of Levites, the Merari family, got 12 towns.

41 So the Levites were given a total of 48 towns and some land around each town for their animals. All these towns were in areas that belonged to the other tribes. 42 Each of these towns had some land in it for their animals. That was true for every town.

43 So the Lord kept the promise that he had made to the Israelites and gave the people all the land that he had promised. The people took the land and lived there. 44 And the Lord allowed them to have peace on all sides of their land, just as he had promised their ancestors. None of their enemies defeated them. The Lord allowed the Israelites to defeat every enemy. 45 The Lord kept every promise that he made to the Israelites. There were no promises that he failed to keep. Every promise came true.

21 Then came near the heads of the fathers of the Levites unto Eleazar the priest, and unto Joshua the son of Nun, and unto the heads of the fathers of the tribes of the children of Israel;

2 And they spake unto them at Shiloh in the land of Canaan, saying, The Lord commanded by the hand of Moses to give us cities to dwell in, with the suburbs thereof for our cattle.

3 And the children of Israel gave unto the Levites out of their inheritance, at the commandment of the Lord , these cities and their suburbs.

4 And the lot came out for the families of the Kohathites: and the children of Aaron the priest, which were of the Levites, had by lot out of the tribe of Judah, and out of the tribe of Simeon, and out of the tribe of Benjamin, thirteen cities.

5 And the rest of the children of Kohath had by lot out of the families of the tribe of Ephraim, and out of the tribe of Dan, and out of the half tribe of Manasseh, ten cities.

6 And the children of Gershon had by lot out of the families of the tribe of Issachar, and out of the tribe of Asher, and out of the tribe of Naphtali, and out of the half tribe of Manasseh in Bashan, thirteen cities.

7 The children of Merari by their families had out of the tribe of Reuben, and out of the tribe of Gad, and out of the tribe of Zebulun, twelve cities.

8 And the children of Israel gave by lot unto the Levites these cities with their suburbs, as the Lord commanded by the hand of Moses.

9 And they gave out of the tribe of the children of Judah, and out of the tribe of the children of Simeon, these cities which are here mentioned by name.

10 Which the children of Aaron, being of the families of the Kohathites, who were of the children of Levi, had: for theirs was the first lot.

11 And they gave them the city of Arba the father of Anak, which city is Hebron, in the hill country of Judah, with the suburbs thereof round about it.

12 But the fields of the city, and the villages thereof, gave they to Caleb the son of Jephunneh for his possession.

13 Thus they gave to the children of Aaron the priest Hebron with her suburbs, to be a city of refuge for the slayer; and Libnah with her suburbs,

14 And Jattir with her suburbs, and Eshtemoa with her suburbs,

15 And Holon with her suburbs, and Debir with her suburbs,

16 And Ain with her suburbs, and Juttah with her suburbs, and Bethshemesh with her suburbs; nine cities out of those two tribes.

17 And out of the tribe of Benjamin, Gibeon with her suburbs, Geba with her suburbs,

18 Anathoth with her suburbs, and Almon with her suburbs; four cities.

19 All the cities of the children of Aaron, the priests, were thirteen cities with their suburbs.

20 And the families of the children of Kohath, the Levites which remained of the children of Kohath, even they had the cities of their lot out of the tribe of Ephraim.

21 For they gave them Shechem with her suburbs in mount Ephraim, to be a city of refuge for the slayer; and Gezer with her suburbs,

22 And Kibzaim with her suburbs, and Bethhoron with her suburbs; four cities.

23 And out of the tribe of Dan, Eltekeh with her suburbs, Gibbethon with her suburbs,

24 Aijalon with her suburbs, Gathrimmon with her suburbs; four cities.

25 And out of the half tribe of Manasseh, Tanach with her suburbs, and Gathrimmon with her suburbs; two cities.

26 All the cities were ten with their suburbs for the families of the children of Kohath that remained.

27 And unto the children of Gershon, of the families of the Levites, out of the other half tribe of Manasseh they gave Golan in Bashan with her suburbs, to be a city of refuge for the slayer; and Beeshterah with her suburbs; two cities.

28 And out of the tribe of Issachar, Kishon with her suburbs, Dabareh with her suburbs,

29 Jarmuth with her suburbs, Engannim with her suburbs; four cities.

30 And out of the tribe of Asher, Mishal with her suburbs, Abdon with her suburbs,

31 Helkath with her suburbs, and Rehob with her suburbs; four cities.

32 And out of the tribe of Naphtali, Kedesh in Galilee with her suburbs, to be a city of refuge for the slayer; and Hammothdor with her suburbs, and Kartan with her suburbs; three cities.

33 All the cities of the Gershonites according to their families were thirteen cities with their suburbs.

34 And unto the families of the children of Merari, the rest of the Levites, out of the tribe of Zebulun, Jokneam with her suburbs, and Kartah with her suburbs,

35 Dimnah with her suburbs, Nahalal with her suburbs; four cities.

36 And out of the tribe of Reuben, Bezer with her suburbs, and Jahazah with her suburbs,

37 Kedemoth with her suburbs, and Mephaath with her suburbs; four cities.

38 And out of the tribe of Gad, Ramoth in Gilead with her suburbs, to be a city of refuge for the slayer; and Mahanaim with her suburbs,

39 Heshbon with her suburbs, Jazer with her suburbs; four cities in all.

40 So all the cities for the children of Merari by their families, which were remaining of the families of the Levites, were by their lot twelve cities.

41 All the cities of the Levites within the possession of the children of Israel were forty and eight cities with their suburbs.

42 These cities were every one with their suburbs round about them: thus were all these cities.

43 And the Lord gave unto Israel all the land which he sware to give unto their fathers; and they possessed it, and dwelt therein.

44 And the Lord gave them rest round about, according to all that he sware unto their fathers: and there stood not a man of all their enemies before them; the Lord delivered all their enemies into their hand.

45 There failed not ought of any good thing which the Lord had spoken unto the house of Israel; all came to pass.

Forty-eight Cities of the Levites

21 Then the heads of fathers’ households of ( A ) the Levites approached Eleazar the priest, Joshua the son of Nun, and the heads of fathers’ households of the tribes of the sons of Israel. 2 And they spoke to them at Shiloh in the land of Canaan, saying, “ ( B ) The Lord commanded [ a ] through Moses to give us cities to live in, with their pasture lands for our cattle.” 3 So the sons of Israel gave the Levites from their inheritance these cities with their pasture lands, in accordance with the [ b ] command of the Lord . 4 Then the lot came out for the families of the Kohathites. And to the sons of Aaron the priest, who were of the Levites, thirteen cities were given by lot from the tribe of Judah, from the tribe of the Simeonites, and from the tribe of Benjamin.

5 And to the rest of the sons of Kohath ten cities were given by lot from the families of the tribe of Ephraim, from the tribe of Dan, and from the half-tribe of Manasseh.

6 And to the sons of Gershon thirteen cities were given by lot from the families of the tribe of Issachar, from the tribe of Asher, from the tribe of Naphtali, and from the half-tribe of Manasseh in Bashan.

7 To the sons of Merari according to their families twelve cities were given from the tribe of Reuben, from the tribe of Gad, and from the tribe of Zebulun.

8 Now the ( C ) sons of Israel gave by lot to the Levites these cities with their pasture lands, as the Lord had commanded [ c ] through Moses.

9 They gave these cities which are mentioned here by name from the tribe of the sons of Judah and from the tribe of the sons of Simeon; 10 and they were for the sons of Aaron, one of the families of the Kohathites, of the sons of Levi, because the lot was theirs first. 11 So ( D ) they gave them Kiriath-arba ( Arba being the ( E ) father of Anak), that is, Hebron, in the hill country of Judah, with its surrounding pasture lands. 12 But the fields of the city and its villages they gave to Caleb the son of Jephunneh as his possession.

13 So ( F ) to the sons of Aaron the priest they gave ( G ) Hebron, the city of refuge for the one who commits manslaughter, with its pasture lands, ( H ) Libnah with its pasture lands, 14 ( I ) Jattir with its pasture lands, ( J ) Eshtemoa with its pasture lands, 15 [ d ] Holon with its pasture lands, ( K ) Debir with its pasture lands, 16 [ e ] Ain with its pasture lands, ( L ) Juttah with its pasture lands, and ( M ) Beth-shemesh with its pasture lands; nine cities from these two tribes. 17 From the tribe of Benjamin, ( N ) Gibeon with its pasture lands, ( O ) Geba with its pasture lands, 18 Anathoth with its pasture lands, and [ f ] Almon with its pasture lands; four cities. 19 All the cities of the sons of Aaron, the priests, were thirteen cities with their pasture lands.

20 Then the cities from the tribe of Ephraim were allotted to the ( P ) families of the sons of Kohath, the Levites, that is, to the rest of the sons of Kohath. 21 They gave them ( Q ) Shechem, the city of refuge for the one who commits manslaughter, with its pasture lands, in the hill country of Ephraim, and Gezer with its pasture lands, 22 and Kibzaim with its pasture lands, and Beth-horon with its pasture lands; four cities. 23 And from the tribe of Dan, Elteke with its pasture lands, Gibbethon with its pasture lands, 24 Aijalon with its pasture lands, Gath-rimmon with its pasture lands; four cities. 25 From the half-tribe of Manasseh, they allotted Taanach with its pasture lands and Gath-rimmon with its pasture lands; two cities. 26 All the cities with their pasture lands for the families of the rest of the sons of Kohath were ten.

27 And ( R ) to the sons of Gershon, one of the families of the Levites, from the half-tribe of Manasseh, they gave Golan in Bashan, the city of refuge for the one who commits manslaughter, with its pasture lands, and Be-eshterah with its pasture lands; two cities. 28 And from the tribe of Issachar they gave Kishion with its pasture lands, Daberath with its pasture lands, 29 Jarmuth with its pasture lands, and En-gannim with its pasture lands; four cities. 30 From the tribe of Asher, they gave Mishal with its pasture lands, Abdon with its pasture lands, 31 Helkath with its pasture lands, and Rehob with its pasture lands; four cities. 32 And from the tribe of Naphtali, they gave ( S ) Kedesh in Galilee, the city of refuge for the one who commits manslaughter, with its pasture lands, Hammoth-dor with its pasture lands, and Kartan with its pasture lands; three cities. 33 All the cities of the Gershonites according to their families were thirteen cities with their pasture lands.

34 And to the families of ( T ) the sons of Merari, the rest of the Levites, they gave from the tribe of Zebulun, Jokneam with its pasture lands, Kartah with its pasture lands, 35 Dimnah with its pasture lands, and Nahalal with its pasture lands; four cities. 36 From the tribe of Reuben they gave ( U ) Bezer with its pasture lands, Jahaz with its pasture lands, 37 Kedemoth with its pasture lands, and Mephaath with its pasture lands; four cities. 38 And from the tribe of Gad, they gave ( V ) Ramoth in Gilead, the city of refuge for the one who commits manslaughter, with its pasture lands, ( W ) Mahanaim with its pasture lands, 39 Heshbon with its pasture lands, and Jazer with its pasture lands; four cities in all. 40 All these were the cities of the sons of Merari according to their families, the rest of the families of the Levites; and their lot was twelve cities.

41 ( X ) All the cities of the Levites in the midst of the possession of the sons of Israel were forty-eight cities with their pasture lands. 42 These cities individually had [ g ] their surrounding pasture lands; this is how it was with all these cities.

43 ( Y ) So the Lord gave Israel all the land which He had sworn to give to their fathers, and ( Z ) they took possession of it and lived in it. 44 And the Lord ( AA ) gave them rest on every side, in accordance with everything that He had sworn to their fathers, and ( AB ) no one of all their enemies stood before them; ( AC ) the Lord handed all their enemies over to them. 45 ( AD ) Not [ h ] one of the good promises which the Lord had [ i ] made to the house of Israel failed; everything came to pass.

Towns for the Levites ( A )

21 Now the family heads of the Levites approached Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of Nun, and the heads of the other tribal families of Israel ( B ) 2 at Shiloh ( C ) in Canaan and said to them, “The Lord commanded through Moses that you give us towns ( D ) to live in, with pasturelands for our livestock.” ( E ) 3 So, as the Lord had commanded, the Israelites gave the Levites the following towns and pasturelands out of their own inheritance:

4 The first lot came out for the Kohathites, ( F ) according to their clans. The Levites who were descendants of Aaron the priest were allotted thirteen towns from the tribes of Judah, Simeon and Benjamin. ( G ) 5 The rest of Kohath’s descendants were allotted ten towns from the clans of the tribes of Ephraim, Dan and half of Manasseh. ( H )

6 The descendants of Gershon ( I ) were allotted thirteen towns from the clans of the tribes of Issachar, ( J ) Asher, ( K ) Naphtali and the half-tribe of Manasseh in Bashan.

7 The descendants of Merari, ( L ) according to their clans, received twelve ( M ) towns from the tribes of Reuben, Gad and Zebulun. ( N )

8 So the Israelites allotted to the Levites these towns and their pasturelands, as the Lord had commanded through Moses.

9 From the tribes of Judah and Simeon they allotted the following towns by name 10 (these towns were assigned to the descendants of Aaron who were from the Kohathite clans of the Levites, because the first lot fell to them):

11 They gave them Kiriath Arba ( O ) (that is, Hebron ( P ) ), with its surrounding pastureland, in the hill country of Judah. (Arba was the forefather of Anak.) 12 But the fields and villages around the city they had given to Caleb son of Jephunneh as his possession. ( Q )

13 So to the descendants of Aaron the priest they gave Hebron (a city of refuge ( R ) for one accused of murder), Libnah, ( S ) 14 Jattir, ( T ) Eshtemoa, ( U ) 15 Holon, ( V ) Debir, ( W ) 16 Ain, ( X ) Juttah ( Y ) and Beth Shemesh, ( Z ) together with their pasturelands—nine towns from these two tribes.

17 And from the tribe of Benjamin they gave them Gibeon, ( AA ) Geba, ( AB ) 18 Anathoth ( AC ) and Almon, together with their pasturelands—four towns.

19 The total number of towns ( AD ) for the priests, the descendants of Aaron, came to thirteen, together with their pasturelands. ( AE )

20 The rest of the Kohathite clans of the Levites were allotted towns from the tribe of Ephraim:

21 In the hill country of Ephraim they were given Shechem ( AF ) (a city of refuge for one accused of murder) and Gezer, ( AG ) 22 Kibzaim and Beth Horon, ( AH ) together with their pasturelands—four towns. ( AI )

23 Also from the tribe of Dan they received Eltekeh, Gibbethon, ( AJ ) 24 Aijalon ( AK ) and Gath Rimmon, ( AL ) together with their pasturelands—four towns.

25 From half the tribe of Manasseh they received Taanach ( AM ) and Gath Rimmon, together with their pasturelands—two towns.

26 All these ten towns and their pasturelands were given to the rest of the Kohathite clans. ( AN )

27 The Levite clans of the Gershonites were given:

from the half-tribe of Manasseh,

Golan in Bashan ( AO ) (a city of refuge for one accused of murder ( AP ) ) and Be Eshterah, together with their pasturelands—two towns;

28 from the tribe of Issachar, ( AQ )

Kishion, ( AR ) Daberath, ( AS ) 29 Jarmuth ( AT ) and En Gannim, ( AU ) together with their pasturelands—four towns;

30 from the tribe of Asher, ( AV )

Mishal, ( AW ) Abdon, ( AX ) 31 Helkath and Rehob, ( AY ) together with their pasturelands—four towns;

32 from the tribe of Naphtali,

Kedesh ( AZ ) in Galilee (a city of refuge for one accused of murder ( BA ) ), Hammoth Dor and Kartan, together with their pasturelands—three towns.

33 The total number of towns of the Gershonite ( BB ) clans came to thirteen, together with their pasturelands.

34 The Merarite clans (the rest of the Levites) were given:

from the tribe of Zebulun, ( BC )

Jokneam, ( BD ) Kartah, 35 Dimnah and Nahalal, ( BE ) together with their pasturelands—four towns;

36 from the tribe of Reuben,

Bezer, ( BF ) Jahaz, ( BG ) 37 Kedemoth and Mephaath, ( BH ) together with their pasturelands—four towns;

38 from the tribe of Gad,

Ramoth ( BI ) in Gilead ( BJ ) (a city of refuge for one accused of murder), Mahanaim, ( BK ) 39 Heshbon and Jazer, ( BL ) together with their pasturelands—four towns in all.

40 The total number of towns allotted to the Merarite clans, who were the rest of the Levites, came to twelve. ( BM )

41 The towns of the Levites in the territory held by the Israelites were forty-eight in all, together with their pasturelands. ( BN ) 42 Each of these towns had pasturelands surrounding it; this was true for all these towns.

43 So the Lord gave Israel all the land he had sworn to give their ancestors, ( BO ) and they took possession ( BP ) of it and settled there. ( BQ ) 44 The Lord gave them rest ( BR ) on every side, just as he had sworn to their ancestors. Not one of their enemies ( BS ) withstood them; the Lord gave all their enemies ( BT ) into their hands. ( BU ) 45 Not one of all the Lord ’s good promises ( BV ) to Israel failed; every one was fulfilled.
