The land that remained for Israel to take

13 Joshua had become a very old man. [ a ] The Lord said to him, ‘You are now very old. There is still a lot of land that you have not yet taken. 2 This is the land left for you to take: All the land of the Philistines and the Geshurites. 3 Their land goes from the Shihor river on the east side of Egypt, to the border of Ekron's land. That part belongs to the Canaanites. The land of the Philistine rulers in Gaza, Ashdod, Ashkelon, Gath and Ekron. There is also the land of the Avvites in the south. [ b ] 4 You must take all the land of the Canaanites, which goes from Arah in Sidon region, and continues to Aphek, as far as the border of the Amorites. 5 There is also the land of the Gebalites, and all of Lebanon in the east. That land goes from Baal Gad at the side of Hermon mountain, to Lebo-Hamath.

6 I myself will chase out all the people of Sidon in front of the Israelites. I will chase them out of the hill country, from Lebanon as far as Misrephoth Maim. You must give this land to the tribes of Israel, as I have already told you. 7 Each of the nine tribes, and the half tribe of Manasseh, must receive its own part of the land.’ [ c ]

How Moses had given land to some tribes

8 Moses had already given land to the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and the other half of Manasseh. Their land was on the east side of the Jordan River. Moses, the Lord 's servant, had given a piece of land to each tribe.

9 Their land went from Aroer, on the edge of the Arnon valley and the town in the middle of the valley. It included all the flat land of Medeba, as far as Dibon. 10 It included all the towns of Sihon, king of the Amorites, who ruled in Heshbon. It went to the border of the Amorites' land. 11 It included the land of Gilead, and the land of the Geshurites and Maakathites. It included all of Hermon mountain, and Bashan as far as Salecah. 12 (That was the kingdom of King Og in Bashan, who ruled in Ashtaroth and Edrei. He was one of the last of the Rephaites.) Moses had won a fight against them and he had taken their land. 13 But the Israelites did not chase out the Geshurites and the Maakathites, so they still live there among the Israelites.

14 Moses had given no land to the tribe of Levi. This was because God had made the Levites a promise. He had made a rule that they would receive their food from the sacrifices and offerings that the other tribes gave to the Lord God of Israel. The Levites received that, instead of land for themselves.

Land for Reuben's tribe

15 This is the part of the land that Moses gave to the clans of Reuben's tribe.

16 He gave them the land from Aroer by the edge of the Arnon valley and the town in the middle of the valley. 17 And he gave them all the flat land past Medeba in Heshbon. It included Dibon, Bamoth Baal, Beth Baal Meon, 18 Jahaz and Kedemoth. It also included Mephaath, 19 Kiriathaim, Sibmah and Zereth Shahar. Zereth was on a hill in the middle of the valley. 20 Their land included Beth Peor, and the sides of Pisgah mountain, and Beth Jeshimoth town. 21 Moses gave them all the towns on the flat land. He gave them all the land of Sihon, king of the Amorites. Sihon had ruled from Hebron. But Moses had won the fight against him and the Midianite kings, Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur and Reba. These kings had ruled with Sihon and they lived in his land. 22 The Israelites had killed the prophet Balaam, son of Beor, when they killed soldiers in the battle. [ d ] He had used magic to help Balak fight against Israel. 23 The border of Reuben's land was the Jordan River.

Moses gave these towns and their villages to the tribe of Reuben, family by family.

Land for Gad's tribe

24 This is the part of the land that Moses gave to the clans of Gad's tribe.

25 He gave them the land of Jazer, the towns of Gilead and half the land of the Ammonites. Their land went as far as Aroer, a town which was near Rabbah. 26 It went from Heshbon to Ramath Mizpah and Betonim, and from Mahanaim to the land of Debir. 27 Moses gave Gad these towns in the valley: Beth Haram, Beth Nimrah, Succoth and Zaphon. He gave them the rest of the land of Sihon, king of Heshbon. This was on the east side of the Jordan River, up to the edge of the sea of Galilee.

28 Moses gave these towns and their villages to the tribe of Gad, family by family.

Land for half of Manasseh's tribe

29 This is the land that Moses gave to half the tribe of Manasseh, clan by clan.

30 He gave them the land from Mahanaim, the land of Bashan, all the land ruled by Og, king of Bashan. It included all the 60 towns of Jair in Bashan. 31 It included half of Gilead, Ashtaroth and Edrei. (These were the cities that belonged to King Og in Bashan.) This land was for half the descendants of Makir, Manasseh's son, to live in, family by family.

32 Moses gave all that land to those tribes, while they were still on the east side of the Jordan River. They were in Moab, on the flat land near Jericho. 33 Moses gave no part of the land to Levi's tribe. The Lord himself, Israel's God, would be their part, as he had promised them.

Land Not Yet Taken

13 When Joshua was very old, the Lord said to him, “Joshua you have grown old, but there is still much land for you to take control of. 2 You have not yet taken the land of Geshur or the land of the Philistines. 3 You have not yet taken the area from the Shihor River [ a ] at Egypt to the border of Ekron and the land further north. That land still belongs to the Canaanites. You must still defeat the five Philistine leaders at Gaza, Ashdod, Ashkelon, Gath, and Ekron. You must also defeat the Avvites 4 who live south of the Canaanite land. And you must still go north to take Mearah, which the Sidonians control. From there you must still go as far as Aphek on the Amorite border. 5 You have not yet defeated the area of the Gebalites. And also there is the area of Lebanon east of Baal Gad below Mount Hermon to Lebo Hamath.

6 “The people of Sidon are living in the hill country from Lebanon to Misrephoth Maim. But I will force them out for the Israelites. Be sure to remember this land when you divide the land among the Israelites. Do this as I told you. 7 Now divide the land among the nine tribes and half the tribe of Manasseh.”

Dividing the Land

8 The tribes of Reuben, Gad, and the other half of the tribe of Manasseh had already received all their land. The Lord ’s servant, Moses, gave them the land east of the Jordan River. 9 Their land started at Aroer by the Arnon Ravine and continued to the town in the middle of the ravine. And it included the whole plain from Medeba to Dibon. 10 All the towns that King Sihon of the Amorites ruled were in that land. He ruled in the city of Heshbon. The land continued to the area where the Ammonites lived. 11 Also the town of Gilead was in that land. And the area where the people of Geshur and Maacah lived was in that land. All of Mount Hermon and all of Bashan as far as Salecah was in that land. 12 All the kingdom of King Og was in that land. King Og ruled in Bashan. In the past he ruled in Ashtaroth and Edrei. Og was from the Rephaites. In the past Moses had defeated those people and had taken their land. 13 The Israelites did not force out the people of Geshur and Maacah. They still live among the Israelites today.

14 The tribe of Levi is the only tribe that did not get any land. Instead, the Levites were given all the animals offered by fire to the Lord , the God of Israel. That is what the Lord promised them.

15 Moses had given each family group from the tribe of Reuben some land. This is the land they received: 16 It was the land from Aroer near the Arnon Ravine to the town of Medeba. This included the whole plain and the town in the middle of the ravine. 17 The land continued to Heshbon. It included all the towns on the plain. Those towns were Dibon, Bamoth Baal, Beth Baal Meon, 18 Jahaz, Kedemoth, Mephaath, 19 Kiriathaim, Sibmah, Zereth Shahar on the hill in the valley, 20 Beth Peor, the hills of Pisgah, and Beth Jeshimoth. 21 So that land included all the towns on the plain and all the area that King Sihon of the Amorites had ruled. He ruled in the town of Heshbon, but Moses had defeated him and the leaders of the Midianites. Those leaders were Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba. (They all fought together with Sihon.) All of them lived in that country. 22 The Israelites defeated Balaam son of Beor. (Balaam tried to use magic to tell the future.) The Israelites killed many people during the fighting. 23 The land that was given to Reuben stopped at the shore of the Jordan River. So the land that was given to the family groups of Reuben included all these towns and their fields that were listed.

24 This is the land Moses gave to the tribe of Gad. He gave this land to each tribe:

25 He gave them the land of Jazer, all the towns of Gilead, and half of the land of the Ammonites that went as far as Aroer near Rabbah. 26 Their land included the area from Heshbon to Ramath Mizpah and Betonim, from Mahanaim to the land of Debir, 27 the valley of Beth Haram, Beth Nimrah, Succoth and Zaphon, including the rest of the kingdom of King Sihon of Heshbon, along the Jordan all the way up to Lake Galilee on the eastern side of the river. 28 All this land is the land Moses gave the family groups of Gad. That land included all the towns that were listed. Moses gave that land to each family group.

29 This is the land Moses gave to half the tribe of Manasseh. Half of all the families in the tribe of Manasseh got this land:

30 The land started at Mahanaim. The land included all of Bashan, all the land ruled by King Og of Bashan, and all the towns of Jair in Bashan. (In all, there were 60 cities.) 31 The land also included half of Gilead, Ashtaroth, and Edrei. (Gilead, Ashtaroth, and Edrei were the cities where King Og had lived.) All this land was given to the family of Makir son of Manasseh. Half of all his sons got this land.

32 Moses gave all this land to these tribes. He did this while the people were camped on the plains of Moab. This was across the Jordan River, east of Jericho. 33 Moses did not give any land to the tribe of Levi. The Lord , God of Israel, promised that he himself would be the gift for the tribe of Levi.

Footnotes

  1. Joshua 13:3 Shihor River Probably one of the eastern branches of the Nile River.

13 Now Joshua was old and stricken in years; and the Lord said unto him, Thou art old and stricken in years, and there remaineth yet very much land to be possessed.

2 This is the land that yet remaineth: all the borders of the Philistines, and all Geshuri,

3 From Sihor, which is before Egypt, even unto the borders of Ekron northward, which is counted to the Canaanite: five lords of the Philistines; the Gazathites, and the Ashdothites, the Eshkalonites, the Gittites, and the Ekronites; also the Avites:

4 From the south, all the land of the Canaanites, and Mearah that is beside the Sidonians unto Aphek, to the borders of the Amorites:

5 And the land of the Giblites, and all Lebanon, toward the sunrising, from Baalgad under mount Hermon unto the entering into Hamath.

6 All the inhabitants of the hill country from Lebanon unto Misrephothmaim, and all the Sidonians, them will I drive out from before the children of Israel: only divide thou it by lot unto the Israelites for an inheritance, as I have commanded thee.

7 Now therefore divide this land for an inheritance unto the nine tribes, and the half tribe of Manasseh,

8 With whom the Reubenites and the Gadites have received their inheritance, which Moses gave them, beyond Jordan eastward, even as Moses the servant of the Lord gave them;

9 From Aroer, that is upon the bank of the river Arnon, and the city that is in the midst of the river, and all the plain of Medeba unto Dibon;

10 And all the cities of Sihon king of the Amorites, which reigned in Heshbon, unto the border of the children of Ammon;

11 And Gilead, and the border of the Geshurites and Maachathites, and all mount Hermon, and all Bashan unto Salcah;

12 All the kingdom of Og in Bashan, which reigned in Ashtaroth and in Edrei, who remained of the remnant of the giants: for these did Moses smite, and cast them out.

13 Nevertheless the children of Israel expelled not the Geshurites, nor the Maachathites: but the Geshurites and the Maachathites dwell among the Israelites until this day.

14 Only unto the tribes of Levi he gave none inheritance; the sacrifices of the Lord God of Israel made by fire are their inheritance, as he said unto them.

15 And Moses gave unto the tribe of the children of Reuben inheritance according to their families.

16 And their coast was from Aroer, that is on the bank of the river Arnon, and the city that is in the midst of the river, and all the plain by Medeba;

17 Heshbon, and all her cities that are in the plain; Dibon, and Bamothbaal, and Bethbaalmeon,

18 And Jahaza, and Kedemoth, and Mephaath,

19 And Kirjathaim, and Sibmah, and Zarethshahar in the mount of the valley,

20 And Bethpeor, and Ashdothpisgah, and Bethjeshimoth,

21 And all the cities of the plain, and all the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites, which reigned in Heshbon, whom Moses smote with the princes of Midian, Evi, and Rekem, and Zur, and Hur, and Reba, which were dukes of Sihon, dwelling in the country.

22 Balaam also the son of Beor, the soothsayer, did the children of Israel slay with the sword among them that were slain by them.

23 And the border of the children of Reuben was Jordan, and the border thereof. This was the inheritance of the children of Reuben after their families, the cities and the villages thereof.

24 And Moses gave inheritance unto the tribe of Gad, even unto the children of Gad according to their families.

25 And their coast was Jazer, and all the cities of Gilead, and half the land of the children of Ammon, unto Aroer that is before Rabbah;

26 And from Heshbon unto Ramathmizpeh, and Betonim; and from Mahanaim unto the border of Debir;

27 And in the valley, Betharam, and Bethnimrah, and Succoth, and Zaphon, the rest of the kingdom of Sihon king of Heshbon, Jordan and his border, even unto the edge of the sea of Chinnereth on the other side Jordan eastward.

28 This is the inheritance of the children of Gad after their families, the cities, and their villages.

29 And Moses gave inheritance unto the half tribe of Manasseh: and this was the possession of the half tribe of the children of Manasseh by their families.

30 And their coast was from Mahanaim, all Bashan, all the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, and all the towns of Jair, which are in Bashan, threescore cities:

31 And half Gilead, and Ashtaroth, and Edrei, cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan, were pertaining unto the children of Machir the son of Manasseh, even to the one half of the children of Machir by their families.

32 These are the countries which Moses did distribute for inheritance in the plains of Moab, on the other side Jordan, by Jericho, eastward.

33 But unto the tribe of Levi Moses gave not any inheritance: the Lord God of Israel was their inheritance, as he said unto them.

Canaan Divided among the Tribes

13 Now ( A ) Joshua was old and advanced in years when the Lord said to him, “You are old and advanced in years, and a very large amount of the land remains to be possessed. 2 This is the land that remains: all the regions of the Philistines and all those of the ( B ) Geshurites; 3 from the Shihor which is [ a ] east of Egypt, even as far as the border of Ekron to the north (it is counted as Canaanite); the ( C ) five governors of the Philistines: the Gazite, the Ashdodite, the Ashkelonite, the Gittite, the Ekronite; and the Avvite 4 [ b ] to the south, all the land of the Canaanite, and Mearah that belongs to the Sidonians, as far as ( D ) Aphek, to the border of the ( E ) Amorite; 5 and the land of the ( F ) Gebalite, and all of Lebanon, toward the [ c ] east, ( G ) from Baal-gad below Mount Hermon as far as [ d ] Lebo-hamath. 6 All the inhabitants of the hill country from Lebanon as far as ( H ) Misrephoth-maim, all the Sidonians, I will [ e ] drive out from the sons of Israel; ( I ) only allot it to Israel as an inheritance as I have commanded you. 7 Now therefore, apportion this land as an inheritance to the nine tribes and the half-tribe of Manasseh.”

8 With [ f ] the other half-tribe, the Reubenites and the Gadites received their inheritance which Moses gave them ( J ) beyond the Jordan to the east, just as Moses the servant of the Lord gave to them; 9 from Aroer, which is on the edge of the Valley of the Arnon, with the city which is in the middle of the valley, and all the plain of Medeba, as far as Dibon; 10 and all the cities of Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon, as far as the border of the sons of Ammon; 11 and ( K ) Gilead, and the [ g ] territory of the Geshurites and Maacathites, and all Mount Hermon, and all Bashan as far as Salecah; 12 all the kingdom of ( L ) Og in Bashan, who reigned in Ashtaroth and in Edrei (he alone was left of the remnant of the Rephaim); for Moses ( M ) struck them and [ h ] drove them out. 13 But the sons of Israel did not [ i ] drive out the Geshurites or the Maacathites; instead, Geshur and Maacath live among Israel to this day. 14 ( N ) Only to the tribe of Levi he did not give an inheritance; the offerings by fire to the Lord , the God of Israel, are [ j ] their inheritance, as He spoke to him.

15 So Moses gave an inheritance to the tribe of the sons of Reuben according to their families. 16 Their [ k ] territory was ( O ) from Aroer, which is on the edge of the Valley of the Arnon, with the city which is in the middle of the valley and all the plain by Medeba; 17 Heshbon and all its cities which are on the plain: Dibon, Bamoth-baal, Beth-baal-meon, 18 ( P ) Jahaz, Kedemoth, Mephaath, 19 ( Q ) Kiriathaim, Sibmah, Zereth-shahar on the hill of the valley, 20 Beth-peor, the slopes of Pisgah, Beth-jeshimoth, 21 even all the cities of the plain, and all the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon, whom Moses struck with the leaders of Midian, ( R ) Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba, the leaders of Sihon, who lived in the land. 22 The sons of Israel also killed ( S ) Balaam the son of Beor, the diviner, with the sword among the rest of their dead. 23 The border of the sons of Reuben was the [ l ] Jordan. This was the inheritance of the sons of Reuben according to their families, the cities and their villages.

24 Moses also gave an inheritance to the tribe of Gad, to the sons of Gad according to their families. 25 Their territory was ( T ) Jazer and all the cities of Gilead, and half the land of the sons of Ammon, as far as Aroer which is opposite Rabbah; 26 and from Heshbon as far as Ramath-mizpeh and Betonim, and from Mahanaim as far as the border of [ m ] Debir; 27 and in the valley, Beth-haram, Beth-nimrah, Succoth, and Zaphon, the rest of the kingdom of Sihon king of Heshbon, with the Jordan [ n ] as a border, as far as the lower end of the Sea of [ o ] ( U ) Chinnereth beyond the Jordan to the east. 28 This is the inheritance of the sons of Gad according to their families, the cities and their villages.

29 Moses also gave an inheritance to the half-tribe of Manasseh; and it was for the half-tribe of the sons of Manasseh according to their families. 30 Their territory was from Mahanaim, all Bashan, all the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, and all ( V ) the [ p ] towns of Jair, which are in Bashan, sixty cities; 31 also half of Gilead, with ( W ) Ashtaroth and Edrei, the cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan, were for the sons of Machir the son of Manasseh, for half of the sons of Machir according to their families.

32 These are the territories which Moses apportioned as an inheritance in the plains of Moab, beyond the Jordan at Jericho to the east. 33 But ( X ) to the tribe of Levi, Moses did not give an inheritance; the Lord , the God of Israel, is their inheritance, as He had [ q ] promised to them.

Land Still to Be Taken

13 When Joshua had grown old, ( A ) the Lord said to him, “You are now very old, and there are still very large areas of land to be taken over.

2 “This is the land that remains: all the regions of the Philistines ( B ) and Geshurites, ( C ) 3 from the Shihor River ( D ) on the east of Egypt to the territory of Ekron ( E ) on the north, all of it counted as Canaanite though held by the five Philistine rulers ( F ) in Gaza, Ashdod, ( G ) Ashkelon, ( H ) Gath and Ekron; the territory of the Avvites ( I ) 4 on the south; all the land of the Canaanites, from Arah of the Sidonians as far as Aphek ( J ) and the border of the Amorites; ( K ) 5 the area of Byblos; ( L ) and all Lebanon ( M ) to the east, from Baal Gad below Mount Hermon ( N ) to Lebo Hamath. ( O )

6 “As for all the inhabitants of the mountain regions from Lebanon to Misrephoth Maim, ( P ) that is, all the Sidonians, I myself will drive them out ( Q ) before the Israelites. Be sure to allocate this land to Israel for an inheritance, as I have instructed you, ( R ) 7 and divide it as an inheritance ( S ) among the nine tribes and half of the tribe of Manasseh.”

Division of the Land East of the Jordan

8 The other half of Manasseh, [ a ] the Reubenites and the Gadites had received the inheritance that Moses had given them east of the Jordan, as he, the servant of the Lord , had assigned ( T ) it to them. ( U )

9 It extended from Aroer ( V ) on the rim of the Arnon Gorge, and from the town in the middle of the gorge, and included the whole plateau ( W ) of Medeba as far as Dibon, ( X ) 10 and all the towns of Sihon king of the Amorites, who ruled in Heshbon, ( Y ) out to the border of the Ammonites. ( Z ) 11 It also included Gilead, ( AA ) the territory of the people of Geshur and Maakah, all of Mount Hermon and all Bashan as far as Salekah ( AB ) 12 that is, the whole kingdom of Og in Bashan, ( AC ) who had reigned in Ashtaroth ( AD ) and Edrei. ( AE ) (He was the last of the Rephaites. ( AF ) ) Moses had defeated them and taken over their land. ( AG ) 13 But the Israelites did not drive out the people of Geshur ( AH ) and Maakah, ( AI ) so they continue to live among the Israelites to this day. ( AJ )

14 But to the tribe of Levi he gave no inheritance, since the food offerings presented to the Lord , the God of Israel, are their inheritance, as he promised them. ( AK )

15 This is what Moses had given to the tribe of Reuben, according to its clans:

16 The territory from Aroer ( AL ) on the rim of the Arnon Gorge, and from the town in the middle of the gorge, and the whole plateau past Medeba ( AM ) 17 to Heshbon and all its towns on the plateau, ( AN ) including Dibon, ( AO ) Bamoth Baal, ( AP ) Beth Baal Meon, ( AQ ) 18 Jahaz, ( AR ) Kedemoth, ( AS ) Mephaath, ( AT ) 19 Kiriathaim, ( AU ) Sibmah, ( AV ) Zereth Shahar on the hill in the valley, 20 Beth Peor, ( AW ) the slopes of Pisgah, and Beth Jeshimoth— 21 all the towns on the plateau ( AX ) and the entire realm of Sihon king of the Amorites, who ruled at Heshbon. Moses had defeated him and the Midianite chiefs, ( AY ) Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur and Reba ( AZ ) —princes allied with Sihon—who lived in that country. 22 In addition to those slain in battle, the Israelites had put to the sword Balaam son of Beor, ( BA ) who practiced divination. ( BB ) 23 The boundary of the Reubenites was the bank of the Jordan. These towns and their villages were the inheritance of the Reubenites, according to their clans. ( BC )

24 This is what Moses had given to the tribe of Gad, according to its clans:

25 The territory of Jazer, ( BD ) all the towns of Gilead ( BE ) and half the Ammonite country as far as Aroer, near Rabbah; ( BF ) 26 and from Heshbon ( BG ) to Ramath Mizpah and Betonim, and from Mahanaim ( BH ) to the territory of Debir; ( BI ) 27 and in the valley, Beth Haram, Beth Nimrah, ( BJ ) Sukkoth ( BK ) and Zaphon ( BL ) with the rest of the realm of Sihon king of Heshbon (the east side of the Jordan, the territory up to the end of the Sea of Galilee [ b ] ( BM ) ). 28 These towns and their villages were the inheritance of the Gadites, ( BN ) according to their clans.

29 This is what Moses had given to the half-tribe of Manasseh, that is, to half the family of the descendants of Manasseh, according to its clans:

30 The territory extending from Mahanaim ( BO ) and including all of Bashan, ( BP ) the entire realm of Og king of Bashan ( BQ ) —all the settlements of Jair ( BR ) in Bashan, sixty towns, 31 half of Gilead, and Ashtaroth and Edrei (the royal cities of Og in Bashan). ( BS ) This was for the descendants of Makir ( BT ) son of Manasseh—for half of the sons of Makir, according to their clans. ( BU )

32 This is the inheritance Moses had given when he was in the plains of Moab ( BV ) across the Jordan east of Jericho. ( BW ) 33 But to the tribe of Levi, Moses had given no inheritance; ( BX ) the Lord , the God of Israel, is their inheritance, ( BY ) as he promised them. ( BZ )
