Joshua fights against kings in the north

11 Jabin, king of Hazor, heard what had happened. So he sent a message to Jobab, king of Madon, and to the king of Shimron and the king of Acshaph. 2 He also sent a message to the kings of the hill country in the north, in the Jordan Valley, south of Galilee. [ a ] He also sent a message to people in the low hills and Naphoth Dor in the west. 3 So Canaanite people came from the east and from the west. They were Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites and Jebusites who lived in the hills. They were also Hivites who lived near Hermon mountain, in the region of Mizpah. 4 All these kings came with their big armies. They had many horses and chariots. The soldiers were too many to count. 5 These kings all joined together to fight against the Israelites. They put up their tents near the water at Merom.

6 The Lord said to Joshua, ‘Do not be afraid of them. This time tomorrow they will all be dead! I will give all of them to you Israelites. You must cut the legs of their horses so that they cannot run well. You must also burn their chariots.’

7 So Joshua and his whole army went to attack them at the Waters of Merom. They quickly attacked them by surprise. 8 The Lord caused the Israelites to win against them. The Israelite soldiers chased them as far as Sidon, Misrephoth Maim and the valley of Mizpah in the east. They killed their enemies as they chased them, until they were all dead. 9 Joshua did what the Lord had commanded him to do. He cut their horses' legs and he burned their chariots.

10 At that time, Hazor was the most important city among all those kingdoms that fought against the Israelites. So Joshua turned back and attacked Hazor. He killed its king. 11 The Israelites killed everyone who lived there. Nothing in the city was left alive. They burned the city and destroyed it.

12 Joshua took all these cities and he killed all their kings. He destroyed them all, as the Lord 's servant Moses had told him to do. 13 But the Israelites did not burn the cities that were built on small hills. Hazor was the only city like that which Joshua did burn. 14 The Israelites took for themselves all the animals and the valuable things from those cities. But they killed all the people. They did not let any of them live. 15 Moses had told all the Lord 's commands to Joshua. Joshua obeyed all the Lord 's commands. He did everything that the Lord had told Moses.

The land that Joshua took for the Israelites

16 Joshua's army won against all the people who were living in the land. He took the hill country, the Negev in the south, and the land of Goshen. He took the low hills in the west and the Jordan Valley. He took the mountains and the hills of Israel. 17 The land went from Halak mountain near Edom country, to Baal Gad in the Lebanon valley, below Hermon mountain. He caught all the kings of those regions and he killed them all. 18 Joshua was fighting against those kings for a long time. 19 None of those kingdoms agreed not to fight against the Israelites, except the Hivites who lived in Gibeon. The Israelites fought battles against all the other kingdoms and they won. 20 The Lord had caused the minds of those people to become hard. So they all decided to fight against the Israelites. The Lord wanted the Israelites to destroy those people completely, as he had commanded Moses.

21 During that time, Joshua went to fight against the Anakites, who lived in the hill country. They lived in Hebron, Debir and Anab, and among the hills of Judah and Israel. Joshua destroyed them all, and all their towns. 22 So no Anakites remained in Israel, except for a few who lived in Gaza, Gath and Ashdod.

23 In that way, Joshua took the whole land. The Lord had promised Moses that he would give the land to his people. Joshua gave a part of the land to each tribe, for them to live in.

After all that, the people did not have to fight any more.

Defeating the Northern Cities

11 King Jabin of Hazor heard about everything that had happened. So he decided to call together the armies of several kings. He sent a message to King Jobab of Madon to the king of Shimron, to the king of Acshaph, 2 and to the kings of the north in the hill country and in the desert. Jabin sent the message to the kings of the Kinnereth, [ a ] the Negev, and the western foothills. He also sent the message to the king of Naphoth Dor in the west. 3 Jabin sent the message to the kings of the Canaanites in the east and in the west. He sent the message to the Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, and Jebusites living in the hill country. He also sent the message to the Hivites living below Mount Hermon near Mizpah. 4 So the armies of all these kings came together. There were many fighting men and many horses and chariots. It was a very large army—it looked as if there were as many men as grains of sand on the seashore.

5 All these kings met together at the small river of Merom. They joined their armies together into one camp and made plans for the battle against Israel.

6 Then the Lord said to Joshua, “Don’t be afraid of that army, because I will allow you to defeat them. By this time tomorrow, you will have killed them all. You will cut the legs of the horses and burn all their chariots.”

7 So Joshua and his whole army surprised the enemy and attacked them at the river of Merom. 8 The Lord allowed Israel to defeat them. The army of Israel defeated them and chased them to Greater Sidon, Misrephoth Maim, and the Valley of Mizpah in the east. The army of Israel fought until none of the enemy was left alive. 9 Joshua did what the Lord said to do; he cut the legs of their horses and burned their chariots.

10 Then Joshua went back and captured the city of Hazor and killed its king. (Hazor was the leader of all the kingdoms that fought against Israel.) 11 The army of Israel killed everyone in that city and completely destroyed all the people. There was nothing left alive. Then they burned the city.

12 Joshua captured all these cities and killed all their kings. He completely destroyed everything in these cities—just as Moses, the Lord ’s servant, had commanded. 13 But the army of Israel did not burn any cities that were built on hills. The only city built on a hill that they burned was Hazor. This is the city Joshua burned. 14 The Israelites kept for themselves all the things and all the animals they found in the cities. But they killed all the people there. They left no one alive. 15 Long ago the Lord commanded his servant Moses to do this. Then Moses commanded Joshua to do this. So Joshua obeyed God. He did everything that the Lord had commanded Moses.

16 So Joshua defeated all the people in that whole area. He had control over the hill country, the Negev, all the area of Goshen, the western foothills, the Jordan Valley, and the mountains of Israel and all the hills near them. 17 Joshua had control of all the land from Mount Halak near Seir to Baal Gad in the Valley of Lebanon below Mount Hermon. He captured all the kings in that land and killed them. 18 Joshua fought against them for many years. 19 Only one city in all the land made a peace agreement with Israel. That was the Hivite city of Gibeon. All the other cities were defeated in war. 20 The Lord made those people feel brave enough to fight against Israel. This was so that Israel could destroy them completely without mercy just as the Lord had commanded Moses to do.

21 The Anakites lived in the hill country in the area of Hebron, Debir, Anab, and Judah. Joshua fought them and completely destroyed all the people and their towns. 22 There were no Anakites left living in the land of Israel. The only Anakites who were left alive were in Gaza, Gath, and Ashdod. 23 Joshua took control of the whole land of Israel as the Lord had told Moses long ago. The Lord gave that land to Israel as he promised. And Joshua divided the land among the tribes of Israel. Finally, the fighting ended and there was peace in the land.

  1. Joshua 11:2 Kinnereth The area near the Sea of Galilee.

11 And it came to pass, when Jabin king of Hazor had heard those things, that he sent to Jobab king of Madon, and to the king of Shimron, and to the king of Achshaph,

2 And to the kings that were on the north of the mountains, and of the plains south of Chinneroth, and in the valley, and in the borders of Dor on the west,

3 And to the Canaanite on the east and on the west, and to the Amorite, and the Hittite, and the Perizzite, and the Jebusite in the mountains, and to the Hivite under Hermon in the land of Mizpeh.

4 And they went out, they and all their hosts with them, much people, even as the sand that is upon the sea shore in multitude, with horses and chariots very many.

5 And when all these kings were met together, they came and pitched together at the waters of Merom, to fight against Israel.

6 And the Lord said unto Joshua, Be not afraid because of them: for to morrow about this time will I deliver them up all slain before Israel: thou shalt hough their horses, and burn their chariots with fire.

7 So Joshua came, and all the people of war with him, against them by the waters of Merom suddenly; and they fell upon them.

8 And the Lord delivered them into the hand of Israel, who smote them, and chased them unto great Zidon, and unto Misrephothmaim, and unto the valley of Mizpeh eastward; and they smote them, until they left them none remaining.

9 And Joshua did unto them as the Lord bade him: he houghed their horses, and burnt their chariots with fire.

10 And Joshua at that time turned back, and took Hazor, and smote the king thereof with the sword: for Hazor beforetime was the head of all those kingdoms.

11 And they smote all the souls that were therein with the edge of the sword, utterly destroying them: there was not any left to breathe: and he burnt Hazor with fire.

12 And all the cities of those kings, and all the kings of them, did Joshua take, and smote them with the edge of the sword, and he utterly destroyed them, as Moses the servant of the Lord commanded.

13 But as for the cities that stood still in their strength, Israel burned none of them, save Hazor only; that did Joshua burn.

14 And all the spoil of these cities, and the cattle, the children of Israel took for a prey unto themselves; but every man they smote with the edge of the sword, until they had destroyed them, neither left they any to breathe.

15 As the Lord commanded Moses his servant, so did Moses command Joshua, and so did Joshua; he left nothing undone of all that the Lord commanded Moses.

16 So Joshua took all that land, the hills, and all the south country, and all the land of Goshen, and the valley, and the plain, and the mountain of Israel, and the valley of the same;

17 Even from the mount Halak, that goeth up to Seir, even unto Baalgad in the valley of Lebanon under mount Hermon: and all their kings he took, and smote them, and slew them.

18 Joshua made war a long time with all those kings.

19 There was not a city that made peace with the children of Israel, save the Hivites the inhabitants of Gibeon: all other they took in battle.

20 For it was of the Lord to harden their hearts, that they should come against Israel in battle, that he might destroy them utterly, and that they might have no favour, but that he might destroy them, as the Lord commanded Moses.

21 And at that time came Joshua, and cut off the Anakims from the mountains, from Hebron, from Debir, from Anab, and from all the mountains of Judah, and from all the mountains of Israel: Joshua destroyed them utterly with their cities.

22 There was none of the Anakims left in the land of the children of Israel: only in Gaza, in Gath, and in Ashdod, there remained.

23 So Joshua took the whole land, according to all that the Lord said unto Moses; and Joshua gave it for an inheritance unto Israel according to their divisions by their tribes. And the land rested from war.

Northern Canaan Taken

11 Then it came about, when Jabin king of ( A ) Hazor heard about it , that he sent word to Jobab king of Madon, to the king of Shimron, to the king of Achshaph, 2 and to the kings who were of the north in the hill country, and in the ( B ) Arabah—south of [ a ] Chinneroth and in the lowland, and on the [ b ] heights of Dor on the west— 3 to the Canaanite on the east and on the west, and the Amorite, the Hittite, the Perizzite, and the Jebusite in the hill country, and ( C ) the Hivite [ c ] at the foot of ( D ) Hermon in the land of ( E ) Mizpeh. 4 Then they came out, they and all their armies with them, ( F ) as many people as the sand that is on the seashore, with very many horses and chariots. 5 So all of these kings gathered together, and came and encamped together at the waters of Merom, to fight against Israel.

6 Yet the Lord said to Joshua, “ ( G ) Do not be afraid because of them, for tomorrow at this time I am going to turn all of them over to Israel as good as dead; you shall ( H ) hamstring their horses and burn their chariots with fire.” 7 So Joshua and all the people of war with him came upon them suddenly at the waters of Merom, and attacked them. 8 And the Lord handed them over to Israel, so that they [ d ] defeated them, and pursued them as far as Great Sidon, and ( I ) Misrephoth-maim, and the Valley of ( J ) Mizpeh to the east; and they struck them until no survivor was left to them. 9 And Joshua did to them just as the Lord had told him; he ( K ) hamstrung their horses and burned their chariots with fire.

10 Then Joshua turned back at that time and captured ( L ) Hazor, and struck its king with the sword; for Hazor previously was the head of all these kingdoms. 11 ( M ) They struck every person who was in it with the edge of the sword, [ e ] utterly destroying them ; there was no one left who breathed. And he burned Hazor with fire. 12 Joshua captured all the cities of these kings, and all their kings; and he struck them with the edge of the sword and utterly destroyed them, just ( N ) as Moses the servant of the Lord had commanded. 13 However, Israel did not burn any cities that stood on their mounds, except Hazor alone, which Joshua burned. 14 And ( O ) all the spoils of these cities and the cattle, the sons of Israel took as their plunder; but they struck every person with the edge of the sword, until they had destroyed them. They left no one breathing. 15 Just as the Lord had commanded His servant Moses, so Moses commanded Joshua, and so Joshua did; he left nothing undone of all that the Lord had commanded Moses.

16 So Joshua took all that land: ( P ) the hill country and all the [ f ] Negev, all the land of Goshen, the lowland, ( Q ) the Arabah, the hill country of Israel and its lowland 17 from ( R ) Mount Halak, that rises toward Seir, even as far as Baal-gad in the Valley of Lebanon [ g ] at the foot of Mount Hermon. And he captured ( S ) all their kings, and struck them and put them to death. 18 Joshua waged war a long time with all these kings. 19 There was not a city which made peace with the sons of Israel except ( T ) the Hivites living in Gibeon; they took them all in battle. 20 ( U ) For it was of the Lord to [ h ] harden their hearts, to meet Israel in battle in order that he might ( V ) utterly destroy them, that they might [ i ] receive no mercy, but that he might destroy them, just as the Lord had commanded Moses.

21 Then Joshua came at that time and eliminated ( W ) the Anakim from the hill country, from Hebron, Debir, Anab, and from all the hill country of Judah and all the hill country of Israel. Joshua utterly destroyed them with their cities. 22 There were no Anakim left in the land of the sons of Israel; only in Gaza, ( X ) Gath, and ( Y ) Ashdod some remained. 23 So Joshua took the whole land, in accordance with everything that the Lord had spoken to Moses; and ( Z ) Joshua gave it as an inheritance to Israel according to their divisions by their tribes. ( AA ) So the land was at rest from war.

Northern Kings Defeated

11 When Jabin ( A ) king of Hazor ( B ) heard of this, he sent word to Jobab king of Madon, to the kings of Shimron ( C ) and Akshaph, ( D ) 2 and to the northern kings who were in the mountains, in the Arabah ( E ) south of Kinnereth, ( F ) in the western foothills and in Naphoth Dor ( G ) on the west; 3 to the Canaanites in the east and west; to the Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites ( H ) and Jebusites in the hill country; ( I ) and to the Hivites ( J ) below Hermon ( K ) in the region of Mizpah. ( L ) 4 They came out with all their troops and a large number of horses and chariots—a huge army, as numerous as the sand on the seashore. ( M ) 5 All these kings joined forces ( N ) and made camp together at the Waters of Merom ( O ) to fight against Israel.

6 The Lord said to Joshua, “Do not be afraid of them, because by this time tomorrow I will hand ( P ) all of them, slain, over to Israel. You are to hamstring ( Q ) their horses and burn their chariots.” ( R )

7 So Joshua and his whole army came against them suddenly at the Waters of Merom and attacked them, 8 and the Lord gave them into the hand of Israel. They defeated them and pursued them all the way to Greater Sidon, ( S ) to Misrephoth Maim, ( T ) and to the Valley of Mizpah on the east, until no survivors were left. 9 Joshua did to them as the Lord had directed: He hamstrung their horses and burned their chariots.

10 At that time Joshua turned back and captured Hazor and put its king to the sword. ( U ) (Hazor had been the head of all these kingdoms.) 11 Everyone in it they put to the sword. They totally destroyed [ a ] them, ( V ) not sparing anyone that breathed, ( W ) and he burned ( X ) Hazor itself.

12 Joshua took all these royal cities and their kings and put them to the sword. He totally destroyed them, as Moses the servant of the Lord had commanded. ( Y ) 13 Yet Israel did not burn any of the cities built on their mounds—except Hazor, which Joshua burned. 14 The Israelites carried off for themselves all the plunder and livestock of these cities, but all the people they put to the sword until they completely destroyed them, not sparing anyone that breathed. ( Z ) 15 As the Lord commanded his servant Moses, so Moses commanded Joshua, and Joshua did it; he left nothing undone of all that the Lord commanded Moses. ( AA )

16 So Joshua took this entire land: the hill country, ( AB ) all the Negev, ( AC ) the whole region of Goshen, the western foothills, ( AD ) the Arabah and the mountains of Israel with their foothills, 17 from Mount Halak, which rises toward Seir, ( AE ) to Baal Gad ( AF ) in the Valley of Lebanon ( AG ) below Mount Hermon. ( AH ) He captured all their kings and put them to death. ( AI ) 18 Joshua waged war against all these kings for a long time. 19 Except for the Hivites ( AJ ) living in Gibeon, ( AK ) not one city made a treaty of peace ( AL ) with the Israelites, who took them all in battle. 20 For it was the Lord himself who hardened their hearts ( AM ) to wage war against Israel, so that he might destroy them totally, exterminating them without mercy, as the Lord had commanded Moses. ( AN )

21 At that time Joshua went and destroyed the Anakites ( AO ) from the hill country: from Hebron, Debir ( AP ) and Anab, ( AQ ) from all the hill country of Judah, and from all the hill country of Israel. Joshua totally destroyed them and their towns. 22 No Anakites were left in Israelite territory; only in Gaza, ( AR ) Gath ( AS ) and Ashdod ( AT ) did any survive.

23 So Joshua took the entire land, ( AU ) just as the Lord had directed Moses, and he gave it as an inheritance ( AV ) to Israel according to their tribal divisions. ( AW ) Then the land had rest ( AX ) from war. ( AY )
