God tells Joshua what to do

1 The Lord 's servant, Moses, had died. [ a ] Then the Lord spoke to Joshua, son of Nun, who had helped Moses in his work. 2 The Lord said to Joshua,

‘Moses, my servant, is dead. Now you and all these people must get ready to cross the Jordan River. Lead the people of Israel into the land that I am giving to them. 3 I have given to you every part of the ground that you walk on. I promised Moses that I would do this. 4 You will have all the land from the desert in the south to the Lebanon mountains in the north. It will be from the river Euphrates to the Mediterranean Sea on the west. You will have all the land of the Hittite people. 5 No one can stop you from taking this land as long as you live. As I was with Moses, I will always be with you. I will never leave you alone.

6 Be strong and do not be afraid. You will lead these people to take the land. That is the land that I promised to give to their ancestors. 7 Be strong and do not be afraid. Be very careful to do all the things that Moses commanded you to do. Then everything will go well with you, everywhere that you go. 8 You must keep on speaking about the words of God's law. Think about what it says, all the time. Be careful to obey it. Then you will do well, and you will win. 9 Remember that I have told you this: Be strong and do not be afraid. Do not be weak but be brave. I, the Lord your God, will be with you, everywhere that you go.’

Joshua speaks to the Israelites

10 So Joshua commanded the leaders of the people, 11 ‘Go through all the places where the people live. Tell them to get food ready for a journey. In three days, you will cross the Jordan River. You will begin to take the land for yourselves. This is the land that the Lord your God is ready to give to you.’

12 Joshua said to the tribes of Reuben, Gad and half the tribe of Manasseh, 13 ‘Remember what Moses, the Lord 's servant, told you. The Lord your God is giving to you a place to rest safely. [ b ] He has given this land to you. 14 Your wives, children and animals can stay in this land that Moses gave to you, on the east side of the Jordan River. But your strong men must cross the river, with their weapons. They must go in front of the other Israelite tribes. You must help them 15 until the Lord gives them a place to rest, as he has already given to you. When all the other tribes are safe in the land, you may return to the land east of the Jordan. Moses gave this land to you.’

16 The people said to Joshua, ‘We will do whatever you tell us. And we will go wherever you send us. 17 As we always obeyed Moses, so we will obey you. The Lord your God was with Moses. So we pray that the Lord will be with you too. 18 If anyone turns against you and he does not obey your commands, we will make sure that he dies. You must be very strong and brave.’

Footnotes

  1. 1:1 When we write Lord like this, it is a special name for God. Sometimes people write it as ‘Yahweh’, or as ‘Jehovah’. It is his own name that he told Moses. See Exodus 3:14 . It means ‘I am who I am’. This shows that God has always been there and he always will be there.
  2. 1:13 ‘Rest’ was very special to the people of Israel. It meant that they had a land where they could grow food and live safely.

God Chooses Joshua to Lead Israel

1 Moses was the Lord ’s servant, and Joshua son of Nun was Moses’ helper. After Moses died, the Lord spoke to Joshua and said, 2 “My servant Moses is dead. Now you and all these people must go across the Jordan River. You must go into the land I am giving to the Israelites. 3 I promised Moses that I would give you this land, so I will give you all the land wherever you go. 4 All the land from the desert to Lebanon all the way to the great river (that is, the Euphrates River) and all the land of the Hittites will be yours. And all the land from here to the Mediterranean Sea in the west (that is, the place where the sun sets) will be within your borders. 5 Just as I was with Moses, I will be with you. No one will be able to stop you all your life. I will not abandon you. I will never leave you.

6 “Joshua, you must be strong and brave! You must lead these people so that they can take their land. I promised their fathers that I would give them this land. 7 But you must be strong and brave about obeying the commands my servant Moses gave you. If you follow his teachings exactly, you will be successful in everything you do. 8 Always remember what is written in that book of law. Speak about that book and study it day and night. Then you can be sure to obey what is written there. If you do this, you will be wise and successful in everything you do. 9 Remember, I commanded you to be strong and brave. Don’t be afraid, because the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”

Joshua Takes Command

10 So Joshua gave orders to the leaders of the people: 11 “Go through the camp and tell the people, ‘Get some food ready. Three days from now we will go across the Jordan River and take the land that the Lord our God is giving us.’”

12 Then Joshua said to the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and half the tribe of Manasseh, 13-14 “Remember what the Lord ’s servant Moses told you. He said that the Lord your God would give you a place to live. So he has given you this land east of the Jordan River. But now you must help your relatives get their land. Your wives and children can stay here with your animals. But all your fighting men must prepare for battle and lead the men of the other tribes across the river. 15 The Lord has given you a place to live, and he will do the same for your brothers. But you must help them until they take control of the land the Lord your God is giving them. Then you can come back and settle here on the east side of the river. This is the land that the Lord ’s servant Moses said would be yours.”

16 Then the people answered Joshua, “We will do whatever you command us to do. We will go wherever you tell us to go. 17 We will obey whatever you say, just as we obeyed Moses. We only ask that the Lord your God be with you just as he was with Moses. 18 Then anyone who refuses to obey your commands or turns against you will be killed. Just be strong and brave!”

1 Now after the death of Moses the servant of the Lord it came to pass, that the Lord spake unto Joshua the son of Nun, Moses' minister, saying,

2 Moses my servant is dead; now therefore arise, go over this Jordan, thou, and all this people, unto the land which I do give to them, even to the children of Israel.

3 Every place that the sole of your foot shall tread upon, that have I given unto you, as I said unto Moses.

4 From the wilderness and this Lebanon even unto the great river, the river Euphrates, all the land of the Hittites, and unto the great sea toward the going down of the sun, shall be your coast.

5 There shall not any man be able to stand before thee all the days of thy life: as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee: I will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.

6 Be strong and of a good courage: for unto this people shalt thou divide for an inheritance the land, which I sware unto their fathers to give them.

7 Only be thou strong and very courageous, that thou mayest observe to do according to all the law, which Moses my servant commanded thee: turn not from it to the right hand or to the left, that thou mayest prosper withersoever thou goest.

8 This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.

9 Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.

10 Then Joshua commanded the officers of the people, saying,

11 Pass through the host, and command the people, saying, Prepare you victuals; for within three days ye shall pass over this Jordan, to go in to possess the land, which the Lord your God giveth you to possess it.

12 And to the Reubenites, and to the Gadites, and to half the tribe of Manasseh, spake Joshua, saying,

13 Remember the word which Moses the servant of the Lord commanded you, saying, The Lord your God hath given you rest, and hath given you this land.

14 Your wives, your little ones, and your cattle, shall remain in the land which Moses gave you on this side Jordan; but ye shall pass before your brethren armed, all the mighty men of valour, and help them;

15 Until the Lord have given your brethren rest, as he hath given you, and they also have possessed the land which the Lord your God giveth them: then ye shall return unto the land of your possession, and enjoy it, which Moses the Lord 's servant gave you on this side Jordan toward the sunrising.

16 And they answered Joshua, saying, All that thou commandest us we will do, and whithersoever thou sendest us, we will go.

17 According as we hearkened unto Moses in all things, so will we hearken unto thee: only the Lord thy God be with thee, as he was with Moses.

18 Whosoever he be that doth rebel against thy commandment, and will not hearken unto thy words in all that thou commandest him, he shall be put to death: only be strong and of a good courage.

God’s Orders to Joshua

1 Now it came about after the death of Moses the servant of the Lord , that the Lord spoke to Joshua the son of Nun, Moses’ [ a ] servant, saying, 2 “Moses ( A ) My servant is dead; so now arise, ( B ) cross this Jordan, you and all this people, to the land which I am giving to them, to the sons of Israel. 3 ( C ) Every place on which the sole of your foot steps, I have given it to you, just as I spoke to Moses. 4 ( D ) From the wilderness and this Lebanon, even as far as the great river, the river Euphrates, all the land of the Hittites, and as far as the Great Sea toward the setting of the sun will be your territory. 5 ( E ) No one will be able to oppose you all the days of your life. Just as I have been with Moses, I will be with you; ( F ) I will not desert you nor abandon you. 6 ( G ) Be strong and courageous, for you shall give this people possession of the land which I swore to their fathers to give them. 7 Only be strong and very courageous; [ b ] ( H ) be careful to do according to all the Law which Moses My servant commanded you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, so that you may [ c ] achieve success wherever you go. 8 ( I ) This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may [ d ] be careful to do according to all that is written in it; ( J ) for then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will [ e ] achieve success. 9 Have I not commanded you? ( K ) Be strong and courageous! ( L ) Do not be terrified nor dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”

Joshua Assumes Command

10 Then Joshua commanded the officers of the people, saying, 11 “Pass through the midst of the camp and command the people, saying, ‘Prepare provisions for yourselves, for within ( M ) three days you are going to cross this Jordan, to go in to take possession of the land which the Lord your God is giving you, to possess it.’”

12 But ( N ) to the Reubenites, to the Gadites, and to the half-tribe of Manasseh, Joshua [ f ] said, 13 “Remember the word which Moses the servant of the Lord commanded you, saying, ‘ ( O ) The Lord your God is giving you rest, and will give you this land.’ 14 Your wives, your little ones, and your livestock shall remain in the land which Moses gave you beyond the Jordan, but you shall cross ahead of your brothers in battle formation, all your valiant warriors, and shall help them, 15 until the Lord gives your brothers rest, as He is giving you, and they also possess the land which the Lord your God is giving them. ( P ) Then you may return to [ g ] your own land, and take possession of [ h ] that which Moses ( Q ) the servant of the Lord gave you beyond the Jordan toward the sunrise.”

16 They answered Joshua, saying, “All that you have commanded us we will do, and wherever you send us we will go. 17 Just as we obeyed Moses in all things, so we will obey you; only ( R ) may the Lord your God be with you as He was with Moses. 18 Anyone who rebels against your [ i ] command and does not obey your words in all that you command him, shall be put to death; only be strong and courageous.”

Joshua Installed as Leader

1 After the death of Moses the servant of the Lord , ( A ) the Lord said to Joshua ( B ) son of Nun, Moses’ aide: 2 “Moses my servant is dead. Now then, you and all these people, get ready to cross the Jordan River ( C ) into the land ( D ) I am about to give to them ( E ) —to the Israelites. 3 I will give you every place where you set your foot, ( F ) as I promised Moses. ( G ) 4 Your territory will extend from the desert to Lebanon, ( H ) and from the great river, the Euphrates ( I ) —all the Hittite ( J ) country—to the Mediterranean Sea in the west. ( K ) 5 No one will be able to stand against you ( L ) all the days of your life. As I was with ( M ) Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake ( N ) you. 6 Be strong ( O ) and courageous, ( P ) because you will lead these people to inherit the land I swore to their ancestors ( Q ) to give them.

7 “Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey ( R ) all the law ( S ) my servant Moses ( T ) gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, ( U ) that you may be successful wherever you go. ( V ) 8 Keep this Book of the Law ( W ) always on your lips; ( X ) meditate ( Y ) on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. ( Z ) 9 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; ( AA ) do not be discouraged, ( AB ) for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” ( AC )

10 So Joshua ordered the officers of the people: ( AD ) 11 “Go through the camp ( AE ) and tell the people, ‘Get your provisions ( AF ) ready. Three days ( AG ) from now you will cross the Jordan ( AH ) here to go in and take possession ( AI ) of the land the Lord your God is giving you for your own.’”

12 But to the Reubenites, the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh, ( AJ ) Joshua said, 13 “Remember the command that Moses the servant of the Lord gave you after he said, ‘The Lord your God will give you rest ( AK ) by giving you this land.’ 14 Your wives, ( AL ) your children and your livestock may stay in the land ( AM ) that Moses gave you east of the Jordan, but all your fighting men, ready for battle, ( AN ) must cross over ahead of your fellow Israelites. ( AO ) You are to help them 15 until the Lord gives them rest, as he has done for you, and until they too have taken possession of the land the Lord your God is giving them. After that, you may go back and occupy your own land, which Moses the servant of the Lord gave you east of the Jordan toward the sunrise.” ( AP )

16 Then they answered Joshua, “Whatever you have commanded us we will do, and wherever you send us we will go. ( AQ ) 17 Just as we fully obeyed Moses, so we will obey you. ( AR ) Only may the Lord your God be with you as he was with Moses. 18 Whoever rebels against your word and does not obey ( AS ) it, whatever you may command them, will be put to death. Only be strong and courageous! ( AT )
