- Jonah Chapter 2
2 From inside the fish's stomach, Jonah prayed to the Lord his God.
2 He said,
‘When I was in trouble, I called out to the Lord ,
and he answered my prayer.
Yes, I called out to you for help from the deep hole of death,
and you heard my prayer. [ a ]
3 You threw me into the deep water,
and I fell into the middle of the sea.
The deep water covered me.
You sent big waves to roll over me.
4 I said to myself,
“You have sent me far away from you.
Now I will never see your holy temple again.” [ b ]
5 The deep water of the sea covered me,
so that my life was in danger.
The plants in the sea were all around my head.
6 I went very deep in the water,
as far as the bottom of the mountains.
Deep in the earth, I was in a prison,
and its gates had shut for ever.
But, Lord , my God,
you brought me up from that deep hole.
7 When my life was nearly gone, I prayed to you, Lord .
In your holy temple, you heard my prayer for help.
8 Idols cannot help.
People who worship them have turned away from a faithful God.
9 But as for me, I will sing to thank you.
I will offer a sacrifice to you.
I will do everything that I have promised to do.
The Lord is the one who saves people!’
10 Then the Lord told the great fish to spit Jonah out from its stomach. So it dropped Jonah onto the shore.
2 While Jonah was in the stomach of the fish, he prayed to the Lord his God. He said,
2 “I was in very bad trouble.
I called to the Lord for help,
and he answered me.
I was deep in the grave.
I cried to you,
and you heard my voice.
3 “You threw me into the sea.
Your powerful waves splashed over me.
I went down, down into the deep sea.
The water was all around me.
4 Then I thought, ‘Now I must go where you cannot see me,’
but I continued looking to your holy Temple for help.
5 “The seawater closed over me.
The water covered my mouth,
and I could not breathe. [ a ]
I went down, down into the deep sea.
Seaweed wrapped around my head.
6 I was at the bottom of the sea,
the place where the mountains begin.
I thought I was locked in this prison forever,
but the Lord my God took me out of my grave.
God, you gave me life again!
7 “My soul gave up all hope,
but then I remembered the Lord .
I prayed to you,
and you heard my prayers in your holy Temple.
8 “Some people worship useless idols,
but those statues never help them. [ b ]
9 I will give sacrifices to you,
and I will praise and thank you.
I will make special promises to you,
and I will do what I promise.”
Salvation only comes from the Lord !
10 Then the Lord spoke to the fish, and it vomited Jonah out of its stomach onto the dry land.
2 Then Jonah prayed unto the Lord his God out of the fish's belly,
2 And said, I cried by reason of mine affliction unto the Lord , and he heard me; out of the belly of hell cried I, and thou heardest my voice.
3 For thou hadst cast me into the deep, in the midst of the seas; and the floods compassed me about: all thy billows and thy waves passed over me.
4 Then I said, I am cast out of thy sight; yet I will look again toward thy holy temple.
5 The waters compassed me about, even to the soul: the depth closed me round about, the weeds were wrapped about my head.
6 I went down to the bottoms of the mountains; the earth with her bars was about me for ever: yet hast thou brought up my life from corruption, O Lord my God.
7 When my soul fainted within me I remembered the Lord : and my prayer came in unto thee, into thine holy temple.
8 They that observe lying vanities forsake their own mercy.
9 But I will sacrifice unto thee with the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay that that I have vowed. Salvation is of the Lord .
10 And the Lord spake unto the fish, and it vomited out Jonah upon the dry land.
2 [ a ] Then Jonah prayed to the Lord his God ( A ) from the stomach of the fish, 2 and he said,
“I ( B ) called out of my distress to the Lord ,
And He answered me.
I called for help from the [ b ] depth of ( C ) Sheol;
You heard my voice.
3 For You ( D ) threw me into the deep,
Into the heart of the seas,
And the current flowed around me.
All Your ( E ) breakers and waves passed over me.
4 So I said, ‘I have been ( F ) cast out [ c ] of Your sight.
Nevertheless I will look again ( G ) toward Your holy temple.’
5 ( H ) Water encompassed me to the [ d ] point of death.
The ( I ) deep flowed around me,
Seaweed was wrapped around my head.
6 I ( J ) descended to the base of the mountains.
The earth with its ( K ) bars was around me forever,
But You have ( L ) brought up my life from [ e ] the pit, Lord my God.
7 While [ f ] I was ( M ) fainting away,
I ( N ) remembered the Lord ,
And my ( O ) prayer came to You,
Into ( P ) Your holy temple.
8 Those who ( Q ) are followers of worthless [ g ] idols
Abandon their faithfulness,
9 But I will ( R ) sacrifice to You
With a voice of thanksgiving.
That which I have vowed I will ( S ) pay.
( T ) Salvation is from the Lord .”
10 Then the Lord commanded the ( U ) fish, and it vomited Jonah up onto the dry land.
2 1 [ a ] From inside the fish Jonah prayed to the Lord his God. 2 He said:
“In my distress I called ( A ) to the Lord , ( B )
and he answered me.
From deep in the realm of the dead ( C ) I called for help,
and you listened to my cry.
3 You hurled me into the depths, ( D )
into the very heart of the seas,
and the currents swirled about me;
all your waves ( E ) and breakers
swept over me. ( F )
4 I said, ‘I have been banished
from your sight; ( G )
yet I will look again
toward your holy temple.’ ( H )
5 The engulfing waters threatened me, [ b ]
the deep surrounded me;
seaweed was wrapped around my head. ( I )
6 To the roots of the mountains ( J ) I sank down;
the earth beneath barred me in forever.
But you, Lord my God,
brought my life up from the pit. ( K )
7 “When my life was ebbing away,
I remembered ( L ) you, Lord ,
and my prayer ( M ) rose to you,
to your holy temple. ( N )
8 “Those who cling to worthless idols ( O )
turn away from God’s love for them.
9 But I, with shouts of grateful praise, ( P )
will sacrifice ( Q ) to you.
What I have vowed ( R ) I will make good.
I will say, ‘Salvation ( S ) comes from the Lord .’”
10 And the Lord commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land.
