19 Then Pilate told the soldiers to take Jesus outside. He told them to hit Jesus many times with a whip.

2 The soldiers used some branches with thorns to make a crown for Jesus. They put it on his head. Then put a dark red coat on him too. They did all this as if he was a king. 3 They came to him many times and they were saying to him, ‘Hello, King of the Jews, you are great!’ At the same time they slapped his face with their hands.

4 Pilate went outside once more. He said to the crowd, ‘Listen to me. I will bring Jesus out here to you. You should know this: I do not say that this man is guilty of anything wrong. I have no reason to punish him.’ 5 Then Jesus came out. He was still wearing the hat of thorns on his head and the dark red coat. Pilate said to them, ‘Look. Here is the man!’ 6 When the leaders of the priests and their officers saw Jesus, they shouted, ‘Kill him! Kill him on a cross!’ Pilate said to them, ‘Take him for yourselves and kill him on a cross. I can find no reason why I should punish him.’ 7 The Jews answered, ‘We have a law which says that he must die. He must die because he said, “I am the Son of God.” ’

8 When Pilate heard that, he was even more afraid. 9 He went back into the house. He asked Jesus, ‘Where are you really from?’ But Jesus did not answer him. 10 Pilate said to him, ‘Are you refusing to speak to me? Remember that I have authority. I can let you go free, or I can let them kill you on a cross.’ 11 Jesus answered, ‘You could have no power against me unless God had given it to you. So the man who sold me to you has done a worse thing than you have done.’ 12 From that moment, Pilate tried to let Jesus go free. But the Jewish leaders shouted back, ‘If you let him go, you are not Caesar's friend. Nobody should say that he himself is a king. That shows that he is against Caesar!’

13 When Pilate heard those words, he brought Jesus outside. Pilate sat down on a special seat for the judge. The seat was in a place called ‘Gabbatha’ in the Jewish language. There were large flat stones there, which covered the ground. 14 It was about noon on the day when they prepared the Passover meal. Pilate said to the Jews, ‘Here is your king!’ 15 But they shouted, ‘Take him away! Take him away! Kill him on a cross!’ Pilate asked them, ‘Do you want me to kill your king on a cross?’ The leaders of the priests answered, ‘Caesar is the only ruler that we call king.’ 16 Then Pilate gave Jesus to them, so that they could kill him on a cross.

They fix Jesus to a cross

The soldiers took hold of Jesus. 17 He was carrying the cross on which they would kill him. He went out to the place called ‘The Place of the Skull’. [ a ] This place is called ‘Golgotha’ in the Jewish language. [ b ]

18 When they arrived there, the soldiers fixed Jesus to the cross. They put two other men on crosses near to him. They were on each side of him and Jesus was between them.

19 Pilate wrote a notice. Then the soldiers put it on the cross. It said: ‘Jesus from Nazareth, the King of the Jews’. 20 The place where they put Jesus on the cross was near to the city. So many of the Jews read this notice. They could read it because Pilate had written the words in three languages. He had written it in the Jewish language and in the languages of the Roman people and the Greek people. 21 The leaders of the Jewish priests said to Pilate, ‘Do not write, “The King of the Jews”. Instead, write, “This man said that he is the King of the Jews.” ’ 22 Pilate answered, ‘I will not change what I have written.’

23 After the soldiers had put Jesus on the cross, they took his clothes. They made them into four parts, one part for each soldier. They also took his long shirt, which was one single piece of cloth. 24 So they said to each other, ‘We will not tear it. Instead, we will play a game with dice. The person who wins the game will have the shirt.’ This happened in the way that the Bible had already said:

‘Each of them took some of my clothes.
They played a game with dice to win what I was wearing.’
And that is what the soldiers did. [ c ]

25 Some women stood near to Jesus while he was on the cross. They were his mother, his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Cleopas, and Mary from Magdala. 26 Jesus saw his mother there. He also saw the disciple that he loved. That disciple was standing there, near Jesus' mother. So Jesus said to his mother, ‘Woman, look! There is your son.’ 27 Then he said to the disciple, ‘Look! There is your mother.’ From that time, the disciple took Jesus' mother to live in his own home.

Jesus dies

28 After this, Jesus knew that everything was now finished. Then he said, ‘I am thirsty.’ He said this so that things would happen in the way the Bible already said. [ d ] 29 There was a pot full of cheap wine there. So someone put a piece of cloth into the wine. They fixed the cloth to the end of a branch. The branch was from a plant called hyssop. Then they lifted the cloth up to Jesus' mouth. 30 Jesus drank the wine. Then he said, ‘Everything is finished.’ He bent his head down and he let his spirit go.

A soldier puts a spear into Jesus

31 It was the day when the Jews prepare everything for their day of rest. The next day was the day for the Passover meal, so it was a very important day. The Jews did not want the men's bodies to stay on the crosses during that day of rest. [ e ] So they asked Pilate to tell the soldiers to break the legs of those men. [ f ] Then they could take the dead bodies down from the crosses.

32 So the soldiers went there. They broke the legs of the two men who were on the crosses next to Jesus. 33 Then they went to Jesus. They saw that he was dead already. So they did not break his legs. 34 But one of the soldiers put a spear into Jesus' side. Immediately, blood and water came out of his body. 35 The man who saw these things has spoken about them. What he says is true. He knows that it really happened. He is telling you the truth so that you can believe. 36 The Bible already said how it would happen. It says:

‘Nobody will break any of his bones.’ [ g ]
37 In another place, the Bible says:
‘People will push a spear into that man's body,
and then they will look at him.’ [ h ]
And that is how it really happened.

Joseph buries Jesus

38 There was a man called Joseph who came from the town of Arimathea. He was one of Jesus' disciples, but he was afraid of the Jewish leaders. So he had not told people that he was a disciple of Jesus. Joseph went to Pilate and asked if he could take Jesus' dead body away. Pilate agreed. So Joseph went there and he took the body away. 39 Nicodemus went with Joseph. He was the man who had visited Jesus at night. Nicodemus brought about 33 kilograms of spices called myrrh and aloes. [ i ] 40 The two men covered Jesus' dead body with these spices. And they tied long pieces of linen cloth around it many times. That is how the Jewish people prepare a dead body before they bury it. 41 There was a garden near the place where they had killed Jesus on the cross. In that garden there was a place where they could put the bodies of dead people. It was a new hole in the rock, where nobody had ever put a dead body before. 42 The next day was the Jewish day of rest. So they put Jesus in that hole in the rock, because it was near.

  9. 19:39 Spices are oils or plants that have a lovely smell. The Jews used them on dead bodies. They stopped the dead bodies getting a bad smell.

19 Then Pilate ordered that Jesus be taken away and whipped. 2 The soldiers made a crown from thorny branches and put it on his head. Then they put a purple robe around him. 3 They kept coming up to him and saying, “Hail to the king of the Jews!” And they hit him in the face.

4 Again Pilate came out and said to the Jewish leaders, “Look! I am bringing Jesus out to you. I want you to know that I find nothing I can charge him with.” 5 Then Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate said to the Jews, “Here is the man!”

6 When the leading priests and the Jewish guards saw Jesus they shouted, “Kill him on a cross! Kill him on a cross!”

But Pilate answered, “You take him and nail him to a cross yourselves. I find nothing I can charge him with.”

7 The Jewish leaders answered, “We have a law that says he must die, because he said he is the Son of God.”

8 When Pilate heard this, he was more afraid. 9 So he went back inside the palace and asked Jesus, “Where are you from?” But Jesus did not answer him. 10 Pilate said, “You refuse to speak to me? Remember, I have the power to make you free or to kill you on a cross.”

11 Jesus answered, “The only power you have over me is the power given to you by God. So the one who handed me over to you is guilty of a greater sin.”

12 After this, Pilate tried to let Jesus go free. But the Jewish leaders shouted, “Anyone who makes himself a king is against Caesar. So if you let this man go free, that means you are not Caesar’s friend.”

13 When Pilate heard this, he brought Jesus out to the place called “The Stone Pavement.” (In Aramaic the name is Gabbatha. ) Pilate sat down on the judge’s seat there. 14 It was now almost noon on Preparation day of Passover week. Pilate said to the Jews, “Here is your king!”

15 They shouted, “Take him away! Take him away! Kill him on a cross!”

Pilate asked them, “Do you want me to kill your king on a cross?”

The leading priests answered, “The only king we have is Caesar!”

16 So Pilate handed Jesus over to them to be killed on a cross.

Jesus Is Nailed to a Cross ( A )

The soldiers took Jesus. 17 He carried his own cross to a place called “The Place of the Skull.” (In Aramaic the name of this place is “Golgotha.”) 18 There they nailed Jesus to the cross. They also nailed two other men to crosses. They put them on each side of Jesus with him in the middle.

19 Pilate told them to write a sign and put it on the cross. The sign said, “ jesus of nazareth, the king of the jews .” 20 The sign was written in Aramaic, in Latin, and in Greek. Many of the Jews read this sign, because the place where Jesus was nailed to the cross was near the city.

21 The leading Jewish priests said to Pilate, “Don’t write, ‘The King of the Jews.’ But write, ‘This man said, I am the King of the Jews.’”

22 Pilate answered, “I will not change what I have written.”

23 After the soldiers nailed Jesus to the cross, they took his clothes and divided them into four parts. Each soldier got one part. They also took his tunic. It was all one piece of cloth woven from top to bottom. 24 So the soldiers said to each other, “We should not tear this into parts. Let’s throw lots to see who will get it.” This happened to make clear the full meaning of what the Scriptures say:

“They divided my clothes among them,
and they threw lots for what I was wearing.” ( B )

So the soldiers did this.

25 Jesus’ mother stood near his cross. Her sister was also standing there with Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. 26 Jesus saw his mother. He also saw the follower he loved very much standing there. He said to his mother, “Dear woman, here is your son.” 27 Then he said to the follower, “Here is your mother.” So after that, this follower took Jesus’ mother to live in his home.

Jesus Dies ( C )

28 Later, Jesus knew that everything had been done. To make the Scriptures come true he said, “I am thirsty.” [ a ] 29 There was a jar full of sour wine there, so the soldiers soaked a sponge in it. They put the sponge on a branch of a hyssop plant and lifted it to Jesus’ mouth. 30 When he tasted the wine, he said, “It is finished.” Then he bowed his head and died.

31 This day was Preparation day. The next day was a special Sabbath day. The Jewish leaders did not want the bodies to stay on the cross on the Sabbath day. So they asked Pilate to order that the legs of the men be broken. And they asked that the bodies be taken down from the crosses. 32 So the soldiers came and broke the legs [ b ] of the two men on the crosses beside Jesus. 33 But when the soldiers came close to Jesus, they saw that he was already dead. So they did not break his legs.

34 But one of the soldiers stuck his spear into Jesus’ side. Immediately blood and water came out. 35 (The one who saw this happen has told about it. He told about it so that you also can believe. The things he says are true. He knows that he tells the truth.) 36 These things happened to give full meaning to the Scriptures that said, “None of his bones will be broken” [ c ] 37 and “People will look at the one they stabbed.” [ d ]

Jesus Is Buried ( D )

38 Later, a man named Joseph from Arimathea asked Pilate for the body of Jesus. (Joseph was a follower of Jesus, but he did not tell anyone, because he was afraid of the Jewish leaders.) Pilate said Joseph could take Jesus’ body, so he came and took it away.

39 Nicodemus went with Joseph. He was the man who had come to Jesus before and talked to him at night. He brought about 100 pounds [ e ] of spices—a mixture of myrrh and aloes. 40 These two men took Jesus’ body and wrapped it in pieces of linen cloth with the spices. (This is how the Jews bury people.) 41 In the place where Jesus was killed on the cross, there was a garden. In the garden there was a new tomb. No one had ever been buried there before. 42 The men put Jesus in that tomb because it was near, and the Jews were preparing to start their Sabbath day.

19 Then Pilate therefore took Jesus, and scourged him.

2 And the soldiers platted a crown of thorns, and put it on his head, and they put on him a purple robe,

3 And said, Hail, King of the Jews! and they smote him with their hands.

4 Pilate therefore went forth again, and saith unto them, Behold, I bring him forth to you, that ye may know that I find no fault in him.

5 Then came Jesus forth, wearing the crown of thorns, and the purple robe. And Pilate saith unto them, Behold the man!

6 When the chief priests therefore and officers saw him, they cried out, saying, Crucify him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Take ye him, and crucify him: for I find no fault in him.

7 The Jews answered him, We have a law, and by our law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God.

8 When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he was the more afraid;

9 And went again into the judgment hall, and saith unto Jesus, Whence art thou? But Jesus gave him no answer.

10 Then saith Pilate unto him, Speakest thou not unto me? knowest thou not that I have power to crucify thee, and have power to release thee?

11 Jesus answered, Thou couldest have no power at all against me, except it were given thee from above: therefore he that delivered me unto thee hath the greater sin.

12 And from thenceforth Pilate sought to release him: but the Jews cried out, saying, If thou let this man go, thou art not Caesar's friend: whosoever maketh himself a king speaketh against Caesar.

13 When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he brought Jesus forth, and sat down in the judgment seat in a place that is called the Pavement, but in the Hebrew, Gabbatha.

14 And it was the preparation of the passover, and about the sixth hour: and he saith unto the Jews, Behold your King!

15 But they cried out, Away with him, away with him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Shall I crucify your King? The chief priests answered, We have no king but Caesar.

16 Then delivered he him therefore unto them to be crucified. And they took Jesus, and led him away.

17 And he bearing his cross went forth into a place called the place of a skull, which is called in the Hebrew Golgotha:

18 Where they crucified him, and two other with him, on either side one, and Jesus in the midst.

19 And Pilate wrote a title, and put it on the cross. And the writing was Jesus Of Nazareth The King Of The Jews .

20 This title then read many of the Jews: for the place where Jesus was crucified was nigh to the city: and it was written in Hebrew, and Greek, and Latin.

21 Then said the chief priests of the Jews to Pilate, Write not, The King of the Jews; but that he said, I am King of the Jews.

22 Pilate answered, What I have written I have written.

23 Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took his garments, and made four parts, to every soldier a part; and also his coat: now the coat was without seam, woven from the top throughout.

24 They said therefore among themselves, Let us not rend it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be: that the scripture might be fulfilled, which saith, They parted my raiment among them, and for my vesture they did cast lots. These things therefore the soldiers did.

25 Now there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene.

26 When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son!

27 Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home.

28 After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst.

29 Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a spunge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to his mouth.

30 When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.

31 The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was an high day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.

32 Then came the soldiers, and brake the legs of the first, and of the other which was crucified with him.

33 But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they brake not his legs:

34 But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water.

35 And he that saw it bare record, and his record is true: and he knoweth that he saith true, that ye might believe.

36 For these things were done, that the scripture should be fulfilled, A bone of him shall not be broken.

37 And again another scripture saith, They shall look on him whom they pierced.

38 And after this Joseph of Arimathaea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, besought Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus: and Pilate gave him leave. He came therefore, and took the body of Jesus.

39 And there came also Nicodemus, which at the first came to Jesus by night, and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about an hundred pound weight.

40 Then took they the body of Jesus, and wound it in linen clothes with the spices, as the manner of the Jews is to bury.

41 Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden; and in the garden a new sepulchre, wherein was never man yet laid.

42 There laid they Jesus therefore because of the Jews' preparation day; for the sepulchre was nigh at hand.

The Crown of Thorns

19 So Pilate then took Jesus and [ a ] ( A ) had Him flogged. 2 ( B ) And the soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and placed it on His head, and put a purple [ b ] cloak on Him; 3 and they repeatedly came up to Him and said, “ ( C ) Hail, King of the Jews!” and ( D ) slapped Him in the face again and again . 4 And then Pilate ( E ) came out again and *said to them, “See, I am bringing Him out to you so that you will know that ( F ) I find no grounds at all for charges in [ c ] His case.” 5 Jesus then came out, ( G ) wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. And Pilate *said to them, “Behold, the Man!” 6 So when the chief priests and the ( H ) officers saw Him, they shouted, saying, “Crucify, crucify!” Pilate *said to them, “Take Him yourselves and crucify Him ; for ( I ) I find no grounds for charges in [ d ] His case!” 7 The Jews answered him, “ ( J ) We have a law, and by that law He ought to die, because He ( K ) made Himself out to be the Son of God!”

8 Therefore when Pilate heard this statement, he was even more afraid; 9 and he ( L ) entered the [ e ] Praetorium again and *said to Jesus, “Where are You from?” But ( M ) Jesus gave him no answer. 10 So Pilate *said to Him, “Are you not speaking to me? Do You not know that I have authority to release You, and I have authority to crucify You?” 11 Jesus answered him, “ ( N ) You would have no authority [ f ] over Me at all, if it had not been given to you from above; for this reason ( O ) the one who handed Me over to you has the greater sin.” 12 As a result of this, Pilate [ g ] made efforts to release Him; but the Jews shouted, saying, “ ( P ) If you release this Man, you are not a friend of Caesar; everyone who makes himself out to be a king [ h ] opposes Caesar!”

13 Therefore when Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus out, and ( Q ) sat down on the judgment seat at a place called [ i ] The Pavement—but ( R ) in [ j ] Hebrew, Gabbatha. 14 Now it was ( S ) the day of preparation for the Passover; it was about the [ k ] ( T ) sixth hour. And he *said to the Jews, “Look, ( U ) your King!” 15 So they shouted, “ ( V ) Away with Him , away with Him , crucify Him!” Pilate *said to them, “Shall I crucify your King?” The chief priests answered, “We have no king except Caesar.”

The Crucifixion

16 So he then ( W ) handed Him over to them to be crucified.

17 ( X ) They took Jesus, therefore, and He went out, [ l ] ( Y ) carrying His own cross, to the place called ( Z ) the Place of a Skull, which ( AA ) in [ m ] Hebrew is called, Golgotha. 18 There they crucified Him, and with Him ( AB ) two other men, one on either side, and Jesus in between. 19 Now Pilate also wrote an inscription and put it on the cross. It was written: “ ( AC ) JESUS THE NAZARENE, ( AD ) THE KING OF THE JEWS.” 20 Therefore many of the Jews read this inscription, because the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written ( AE ) in [ n ] Hebrew, Latin, and in Greek. 21 So the chief priests of the Jews were saying to Pilate, “Do not write, ‘ ( AF ) The King of the Jews’; rather, write that He said, ‘I am ( AG ) King of the Jews.’” 22 Pilate answered, “ ( AH ) What I have written, I have written.”

23 Then ( AI ) the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took His outer garments and made ( AJ ) four parts: a part to each soldier, and the [ o ] tunic also ; but the tunic was seamless, woven [ p ] in one piece. 24 So they said to one another, “ ( AK ) Let’s not tear it, but cast lots for it, to decide whose it shall be.” ( AL ) This happened so that the Scripture would be fulfilled: “ They ( AM ) divided My garments among themselves, and they cast [ q ] lots for My clothing .” Therefore the soldiers did these things.

25 ( AN ) Now beside the cross of Jesus stood ( AO ) His mother, His mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and ( AP ) Mary Magdalene. 26 So when Jesus saw His mother, and ( AQ ) the disciple whom He loved standing nearby, He *said to His mother, “ ( AR ) Woman, behold, your son!” 27 Then He *said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!” And from that hour the disciple took her into ( AS ) his own household .

28 After this, Jesus, ( AT ) knowing that all things had already been accomplished, ( AU ) in order that the Scripture would be fulfilled, *said, “ ( AV ) I am thirsty.” 29 A jar full of sour wine was standing there ; so ( AW ) they put a sponge full of the sour wine on a branch of hyssop and brought it up to His mouth. 30 Therefore when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “ ( AX ) It is finished!” And He bowed His head and ( AY ) gave up His spirit.

Care of the Body of Jesus

31 Now then, since it was ( AZ ) the day of preparation, to prevent ( BA ) the bodies from remaining on the cross on the Sabbath ( [ r ] for that Sabbath was a ( BB ) high day), the Jews requested of Pilate that their legs be broken, and the bodies be taken away. 32 So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first man, and of the other who was ( BC ) crucified with Him; 33 but after they came to Jesus, when they saw that He was already dead, they did not break His legs. 34 Yet one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately ( BD ) blood and water came out. 35 And he who has seen has ( BE ) testified, and his testimony is true; and he knows that he is telling the truth, so that you also may believe. 36 For these things took place ( BF ) so that the Scripture would be fulfilled: “ ( BG ) Not a bone of Him shall be [ s ] broken .” 37 And again another Scripture says, “ ( BH ) They will look at Him whom they pierced .”

38 Now ( BI ) after these things Joseph of Arimathea, being a disciple of Jesus, but a ( BJ ) secret one for ( BK ) fear of the [ t ] Jews, requested of Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus; and Pilate granted permission. So he came and took away His body. 39 ( BL ) Nicodemus, who had first come to Him by night, also came, ( BM ) bringing a [ u ] mixture of ( BN ) myrrh and aloes, about a [ v ] ( BO ) hundred litras weight . 40 So they took the body of Jesus and ( BP ) bound it in ( BQ ) linen wrappings with the spices, as is the burial custom of the Jews. 41 Now in the place where He was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden was a ( BR ) new tomb ( BS ) in which no one had yet been laid. 42 Therefore because of the Jewish day of ( BT ) preparation, since the tomb was ( BU ) nearby, they laid Jesus there.

Jesus Sentenced to Be Crucified ( A )

19 Then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged. ( B ) 2 The soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head. They clothed him in a purple robe 3 and went up to him again and again, saying, “Hail, king of the Jews!” ( C ) And they slapped him in the face. ( D )

4 Once more Pilate came out and said to the Jews gathered there, “Look, I am bringing him out ( E ) to you to let you know that I find no basis for a charge against him.” ( F ) 5 When Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe, ( G ) Pilate said to them, “Here is the man!”

6 As soon as the chief priests and their officials saw him, they shouted, “Crucify! Crucify!”

But Pilate answered, “You take him and crucify him. ( H ) As for me, I find no basis for a charge against him.” ( I )

7 The Jewish leaders insisted, “We have a law, and according to that law he must die, ( J ) because he claimed to be the Son of God.” ( K )

8 When Pilate heard this, he was even more afraid, 9 and he went back inside the palace. ( L ) “Where do you come from?” he asked Jesus, but Jesus gave him no answer. ( M ) 10 “Do you refuse to speak to me?” Pilate said. “Don’t you realize I have power either to free you or to crucify you?”

11 Jesus answered, “You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above. ( N ) Therefore the one who handed me over to you ( O ) is guilty of a greater sin.”

12 From then on, Pilate tried to set Jesus free, but the Jewish leaders kept shouting, “If you let this man go, you are no friend of Caesar. Anyone who claims to be a king ( P ) opposes Caesar.”

13 When Pilate heard this, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judge’s seat ( Q ) at a place known as the Stone Pavement (which in Aramaic ( R ) is Gabbatha). 14 It was the day of Preparation ( S ) of the Passover; it was about noon. ( T )

“Here is your king,” ( U ) Pilate said to the Jews.

15 But they shouted, “Take him away! Take him away! Crucify him!”

“Shall I crucify your king?” Pilate asked.

“We have no king but Caesar,” the chief priests answered.

16 Finally Pilate handed him over to them to be crucified. ( V )

The Crucifixion of Jesus ( W )

So the soldiers took charge of Jesus. 17 Carrying his own cross, ( X ) he went out to the place of the Skull ( Y ) (which in Aramaic ( Z ) is called Golgotha). 18 There they crucified him, and with him two others ( AA ) —one on each side and Jesus in the middle.

19 Pilate had a notice prepared and fastened to the cross. It read: jesus of nazareth , ( AB ) the king of the jews . ( AC ) 20 Many of the Jews read this sign, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, ( AD ) and the sign was written in Aramaic, Latin and Greek. 21 The chief priests of the Jews protested to Pilate, “Do not write ‘The King of the Jews,’ but that this man claimed to be king of the Jews.” ( AE )

22 Pilate answered, “What I have written, I have written.”

23 When the soldiers crucified Jesus, they took his clothes, dividing them into four shares, one for each of them, with the undergarment remaining. This garment was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom.

24 “Let’s not tear it,” they said to one another. “Let’s decide by lot who will get it.”

This happened that the scripture might be fulfilled ( AF ) that said,

“They divided my clothes among them
and cast lots for my garment.” [ a ] ( AG )

So this is what the soldiers did.

25 Near the cross ( AH ) of Jesus stood his mother, ( AI ) his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. ( AJ ) 26 When Jesus saw his mother ( AK ) there, and the disciple whom he loved ( AL ) standing nearby, he said to her, “Woman, [ b ] here is your son,” 27 and to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” From that time on, this disciple took her into his home.

The Death of Jesus ( AM )

28 Later, knowing that everything had now been finished, ( AN ) and so that Scripture would be fulfilled, ( AO ) Jesus said, “I am thirsty.” 29 A jar of wine vinegar ( AP ) was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus’ lips. 30 When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.” ( AQ ) With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

31 Now it was the day of Preparation, ( AR ) and the next day was to be a special Sabbath. Because the Jewish leaders did not want the bodies left on the crosses ( AS ) during the Sabbath, they asked Pilate to have the legs broken and the bodies taken down. 32 The soldiers therefore came and broke the legs of the first man who had been crucified with Jesus, and then those of the other. ( AT ) 33 But when they came to Jesus and found that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. 34 Instead, one of the soldiers pierced ( AU ) Jesus’ side with a spear, bringing a sudden flow of blood and water. ( AV ) 35 The man who saw it ( AW ) has given testimony, and his testimony is true. ( AX ) He knows that he tells the truth, and he testifies so that you also may believe. 36 These things happened so that the scripture would be fulfilled: ( AY ) “Not one of his bones will be broken,” [ c ] ( AZ ) 37 and, as another scripture says, “They will look on the one they have pierced.” [ d ] ( BA )

The Burial of Jesus ( BB )

38 Later, Joseph of Arimathea asked Pilate for the body of Jesus. Now Joseph was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly because he feared the Jewish leaders. ( BC ) With Pilate’s permission, he came and took the body away. 39 He was accompanied by Nicodemus, ( BD ) the man who earlier had visited Jesus at night. Nicodemus brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds. [ e ] 40 Taking Jesus’ body, the two of them wrapped it, with the spices, in strips of linen. ( BE ) This was in accordance with Jewish burial customs. ( BF ) 41 At the place where Jesus was crucified, there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb, in which no one had ever been laid. 42 Because it was the Jewish day of Preparation ( BG ) and since the tomb was nearby, ( BH ) they laid Jesus there.
