Jesus washes his disciples' feet

13 It was nearly time for the Passover Festival. Jesus knew that he would soon leave this world and to go to the Father. He had always loved those who were his own people in the world. He continued to love them to the end.

2 Jesus and his disciples were eating supper. The Devil had already put an idea into the mind of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son. The idea was to sell Jesus to his enemies. 3 Jesus knew that the Father had given him power over everything. He knew that he had come from God. And he knew that he would soon return to God. 4 So, during the meal, he stood up. He took off the coat that he wore over his other clothes. He tied a piece of cloth round himself. 5 Then he poured water into a bowl and he began to wash the disciples' feet. Jesus made their feet dry with the cloth that was round him.

6 Jesus came to Simon Peter. Peter asked him, ‘Lord, will you really wash my feet?’ 7 Jesus answered him, ‘You do not understand now what I am doing. But you will understand in the future.’ 8 Peter said, ‘No! You will never wash my feet!’ Jesus answered, ‘If I do not wash you, you do not belong with me.’ 9 Simon Peter replied, ‘So Lord, do not wash my feet only! Wash my hands and my head too!’ 10 Jesus said, ‘A person who has washed his whole body is completely clean. He needs only to wash his feet. And all of you are clean, except one of you.’ 11 Jesus knew already who would sell him to his enemies. That is why he said, ‘Not every one of you is clean.’

12 When he had finished washing the disciples' feet, Jesus put on his coat. He returned to his place at the meal. He asked them, ‘I want you to understand what I have just done for you. 13 You call me Teacher and Lord, and you are right. That is what I am. 14 I am your Teacher and your Lord, but I have washed your feet. So you also should wash each other's feet. 15 I have given you an example. You should do the same for others as I have done for you. 16 I tell you this: No servant is more important than his master is. No messenger is more important than the person who sent him with a message. 17 Now you understand these things. So you should do them, and God will bless you.’

18 Jesus then said, ‘I am not talking about all of you. I know the people that I have chosen. The Bible says, “Someone who ate food with me has turned against me.” [ a ] 19 I am telling you this now, before it happens. So then, when it does happen, you will believe me. You will believe that “I am who I am”. [ b ] 20 I tell you this: Anyone who accepts someone that I send to them is also accepting me. Anyone who accepts me is also accepting my Father God who sent me.’

Jesus tells the disciples what will happen to him

21 After Jesus had said this, he felt very upset. He said to the disciples very seriously, ‘I tell you this: One of you will help my enemies to take hold of me.’ 22 The disciples looked at each other. They did not know which of them Jesus was speaking about. 23 The disciple that Jesus loved was sitting very near to Jesus. 24 Simon Peter looked towards that disciple and said to him, ‘Ask Jesus who he is speaking about.’ 25 So that disciple moved even nearer to Jesus and he asked, ‘Who is it, Lord?’ 26 Jesus answered, ‘I will put a piece of bread in the dish of food. Then I will give the bread to him. That is the man.’ So he put a piece of bread in the dish. Then he gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot.

27 When Judas had taken the bread, Satan came into him. Then Jesus said to Judas, ‘Do quickly what you want to do.’ 28 None of the other disciples who were sitting at the meal understood this. They did not know why Jesus said this to Judas. 29 Judas kept the bag of money on behalf of the group of disciples. So some of them thought that Jesus had asked Judas to buy some things. Maybe he should buy what they needed for the festival. Or maybe he should go and give some money to the poor people.

30 Judas took the bread and he ate it. Then he went out immediately. By now it was night.

Jesus' new rule

31 When Judas had left, Jesus said, ‘Now people will see how great the Son of Man is. Because of him, they will also see how great God is. 32 The Son will show how great God is. Then God will take the Son to himself and he will show how great the Son is. He will do that very soon.

33 My children, I will be with you for only a short time now. You will look for me. But I tell you now what I told the Jews. You cannot go where I am now going. 34 I give a new rule to you. Love each other. You must love each other as I have loved you. 35 In this way, everyone will know that you are my disciples. They will know it, if you really love each other.’

36 Simon Peter asked him, ‘Lord, where will you go?’ Jesus replied, ‘You cannot follow now where I will go. But some time after this, you will follow.’ 37 Peter said, ‘Lord, why can I not go with you now? I would even die for you.’ 38 Jesus answered, ‘You say that you would die for me. But I tell you this: Soon you will say that you do not know me. Before the cockerel sings early tomorrow morning, you will say that three times.’

Footnotes

  1. 13:18 See Psalms 41:9 .
  2. 13:19 The Jews used ‘I am’ as the name of God. When Jesus said, ‘I am,’ they would have recognized this name. He was saying that he is God.

Jesus Washes His Followers’ Feet

13 It was almost time for the Jewish Passover festival. Jesus knew that the time had come for him to leave this world and go back to the Father. Jesus had always loved the people in the world who were his. Now was the time he showed them his love the most.

2 Jesus and his followers were at the evening meal. The devil had already persuaded Judas Iscariot to hand Jesus over to his enemies. (Judas was the son of Simon.) 3 The Father had given Jesus power over everything. Jesus knew this. He also knew that he had come from God. And he knew that he was going back to God. 4 So while they were eating, Jesus stood up and took off his robe. He got a towel and wrapped it around his waist. 5 Then he poured water into a bowl and began to wash the followers’ feet. [ a ] He dried their feet with the towel that was wrapped around his waist.

6 He came to Simon Peter. But Peter said to him, “Lord, you should not wash my feet.”

7 Jesus answered, “You don’t know what I am doing now. But later you will understand.”

8 Peter said, “No! You will never wash my feet.”

Jesus answered, “If I don’t wash your feet, you are not one of my people.”

9 Simon Peter said, “Lord, after you wash my feet, wash my hands and my head too!”

10 Jesus said, “After a person has a bath, his whole body is clean. He needs only to wash his feet. And you are clean, but not all of you.” 11 Jesus knew who would hand him over to his enemies. That is why he said, “Not all of you are clean.”

12 When Jesus finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and went back to the table. He asked, “Do you understand what I did for you? 13 You call me ‘Teacher.’ And you call me ‘Lord.’ And this is right, because that is what I am. 14 I am your Lord and Teacher. But I washed your feet. So you also should wash each other’s feet. 15 I did this as an example for you. So you should serve each other just as I served you. 16 Believe me, servants are not greater than their master. Those who are sent to do something are not greater than the one who sent them. 17 If you know these things, great blessings will be yours if you do them.

18 “I am not talking about all of you. I know the people I have chosen. But what the Scriptures say must happen: ‘The man who shared my food has turned against me.’ [ b ] 19 I am telling you this now before it happens. Then when it happens, you will believe that I Am . [ c ] 20 I assure you, whoever accepts the person I send also accepts me. And whoever accepts me also accepts the one who sent me.”

Jesus Tells Who Will Turn Against Him ( A )

21 After Jesus said these things, he felt very troubled. He said openly, “Believe me when I say that one of you will hand me over to my enemies.”

22 His followers all looked at each other. They did not understand who Jesus was talking about. 23 One of the followers was next to Jesus and was leaning close to him. This was the one Jesus loved very much. 24 Simon Peter made signs to this follower to ask Jesus who he was talking about.

25 That follower leaned closer to Jesus and asked, “Lord, who is it?”

26 Jesus answered him, “I will dip this bread into the dish. The man I give it to is the one.” So Jesus took a piece of bread, dipped it, and gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon. 27 When Judas took the bread, Satan entered him. Jesus said to Judas, “What you will do—do it quickly!” 28 No one at the table understood why Jesus said this to Judas. 29 Since Judas was the one in charge of the money, some of them thought that Jesus meant for him to go and buy some things they needed for the feast. Or they thought that Jesus wanted him to go give something to the poor.

30 Judas ate the bread Jesus gave him. Then he immediately went out. It was night.

Jesus Talks About His Death

31 When Judas was gone, Jesus said, “Now is the time for the Son of Man to receive his glory. And God will receive glory through him. 32 If God receives glory through him, he will give glory to the Son through himself. And that will happen very soon.”

33 Jesus said, “My children, I will be with you only a short time more. You will look for me, but I tell you now what I told the Jewish leaders: Where I am going you cannot come.

34 “I give you a new command: Love each other. You must love each other just as I loved you. 35 All people will know that you are my followers if you love each other.”

Jesus Says Peter Will Deny Him ( B )

36 Simon Peter asked Jesus, “Lord, where are you going?”

Jesus answered, “Where I am going you cannot follow now. But you will follow later.”

37 Peter asked, “Lord, why can’t I follow you now? I am ready to die for you!”

38 Jesus answered, “Will you really give your life for me? The truth is, before the rooster crows, you will say three times that you don’t know me.”

Footnotes

  1. John 13:5 wash … feet A social custom of the first century, because people wore open sandals on very dusty roads. It was a humble duty, usually done by a servant. Also in verses 6-14.
  2. John 13:18 has turned against me Literally, “has lifted up his heel against me.” Quote from Ps. 41:9.
  3. John 13:19 I Am This is like the name of God used in the Old Testament. See Isa. 41:4; 43:10; Ex. 3:14. However, it can also mean “I am he,” meaning “I am the Messiah.”

13 Now before the feast of the passover, when Jesus knew that his hour was come that he should depart out of this world unto the Father, having loved his own which were in the world, he loved them unto the end.

2 And supper being ended, the devil having now put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray him;

3 Jesus knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he was come from God, and went to God;

4 He riseth from supper, and laid aside his garments; and took a towel, and girded himself.

5 After that he poureth water into a bason, and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded.

6 Then cometh he to Simon Peter: and Peter saith unto him, Lord, dost thou wash my feet?

7 Jesus answered and said unto him, What I do thou knowest not now; but thou shalt know hereafter.

8 Peter saith unto him, Thou shalt never wash my feet. Jesus answered him, If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me.

9 Simon Peter saith unto him, Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head.

10 Jesus saith to him, He that is washed needeth not save to wash his feet, but is clean every whit: and ye are clean, but not all.

11 For he knew who should betray him; therefore said he, Ye are not all clean.

12 So after he had washed their feet, and had taken his garments, and was set down again, he said unto them, Know ye what I have done to you?

13 Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am.

14 If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another's feet.

15 For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you.

16 Verily, verily, I say unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord; neither he that is sent greater than he that sent him.

17 If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them.

18 I speak not of you all: I know whom I have chosen: but that the scripture may be fulfilled, He that eateth bread with me hath lifted up his heel against me.

19 Now I tell you before it come, that, when it is come to pass, ye may believe that I am he.

20 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that receiveth whomsoever I send receiveth me; and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me.

21 When Jesus had thus said, he was troubled in spirit, and testified, and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me.

22 Then the disciples looked one on another, doubting of whom he spake.

23 Now there was leaning on Jesus' bosom one of his disciples, whom Jesus loved.

24 Simon Peter therefore beckoned to him, that he should ask who it should be of whom he spake.

25 He then lying on Jesus' breast saith unto him, Lord, who is it?

26 Jesus answered, He it is, to whom I shall give a sop, when I have dipped it. And when he had dipped the sop, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon.

27 And after the sop Satan entered into him. Then said Jesus unto him, That thou doest, do quickly.

28 Now no man at the table knew for what intent he spake this unto him.

29 For some of them thought, because Judas had the bag, that Jesus had said unto him, Buy those things that we have need of against the feast; or, that he should give something to the poor.

30 He then having received the sop went immediately out: and it was night.

31 Therefore, when he was gone out, Jesus said, Now is the Son of man glorified, and God is glorified in him.

32 If God be glorified in him, God shall also glorify him in himself, and shall straightway glorify him.

33 Little children, yet a little while I am with you. Ye shall seek me: and as I said unto the Jews, Whither I go, ye cannot come; so now I say to you.

34 A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.

35 By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.

36 Simon Peter said unto him, Lord, whither goest thou? Jesus answered him, Whither I go, thou canst not follow me now; but thou shalt follow me afterwards.

37 Peter said unto him, Lord, why cannot I follow thee now? I will lay down my life for thy sake.

38 Jesus answered him, Wilt thou lay down thy life for my sake? Verily, verily, I say unto thee, The cock shall not crow, till thou hast denied me thrice.

The Lord’s Supper

13 Now before the Feast of ( A ) the Passover, Jesus, knowing that ( B ) His hour had come that He would depart from this world ( C ) to the Father, having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them [ a ] to the end. 2 And during supper, ( D ) the devil having already put into the heart of ( E ) Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon, to betray Him, 3 Jesus , ( F ) knowing that the Father had handed all things over to Him, and that ( G ) He had come forth from God and was going back to God, 4 *got up from supper and *laid His outer garments aside ; and He took a towel and ( H ) tied it around Himself.

Jesus Washes the Disciples’ Feet

5 Then He *poured water into the basin, and began ( I ) washing the disciples’ feet and wiping them with the towel which He had tied around Himself. 6 So He *came to Simon Peter. He *said to Him, “Lord, You are washing my feet?” 7 Jesus answered and said to him, “What I am doing, you do not realize right now, but you will understand ( J ) later.” 8 Peter *said to Him, “Never shall You wash my feet!” Jesus answered him, ( K ) If I do not wash you, ( L ) you have no [ b ] place with Me.” 9 Simon Peter *said to Him, “Lord, then wash not only my feet, but also my hands and my head!” 10 Jesus *said to him, “He who has bathed needs only to wash his feet; otherwise he is completely clean. And ( M ) you are clean—but [ c ] not all of you .” 11 For ( N ) He knew the one who was betraying Him; it was for this reason that He said, “Not all of you are clean.”

12 Then, when He had washed their feet, and ( O ) taken His garments and reclined at the table again, He said to them, “Do you know what I have done for you? 13 You call Me ( P ) ‘Teacher’ and ( Q ) ‘Lord’; and [ d ] you are correct, for so I am. 14 So if I, ( R ) the Lord and the Teacher, washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. 15 For I gave you ( S ) an example, so that you also would do just as I did for you. 16 Truly, truly I say to you, ( T ) a slave is not greater than his master, nor is ( U ) [ e ] one who is sent greater than the one who sent him. 17 If you know these things, you are ( V ) blessed if you do them. 18 ( W ) I am not speaking about all of you. I know the ones whom I have ( X ) chosen; but this is happening ( Y ) so that the Scripture may be fulfilled, ‘ ( Z ) He who eats My bread has lifted up his heel against Me .’ 19 From now on ( AA ) I am telling you before it happens, so that when it does happen, you may believe that ( AB ) I am He . 20 Truly, truly I say to you, ( AC ) the one who [ f ] receives anyone I send, [ g ] receives Me; and the one who [ h ] receives Me [ i ] receives Him who sent Me.”

Jesus Predicts His Betrayal

21 When Jesus had said these things, He ( AD ) became troubled in spirit, and [ j ] testified and said, “Truly, truly I say to you that ( AE ) one of you will [ k ] betray Me.” 22 The disciples began looking at one another, ( AF ) at a loss to know of which one He was speaking. 23 Lying back on ( AG ) Jesus’ chest was one of His disciples, ( AH ) whom Jesus loved. 24 So Simon Peter *nodded to this disciple and *said to him, “Tell us who it is of whom He is speaking.” 25 He then simply ( AI ) leaned back on Jesus’ chest and *said to Him, “Lord, who is it?” 26 Jesus then *answered, “That man is the one for whom I shall dip the piece of bread and give it to him.” So when He had dipped the piece of bread , He *took and *gave it to Judas, ( AJ ) the son of Simon Iscariot. 27 After [ l ] this, ( AK ) Satan then ( AL ) entered him. Therefore Jesus *said to him, “What you are doing, do it quickly.” 28 Now none of those reclining at the table knew for what purpose He had said this to him. 29 For some were assuming, since Judas ( AM ) kept the money box, that Jesus was saying to him, “Buy the things we need ( AN ) for the feast”; or else, that he was to [ m ] ( AO ) give something to the poor. 30 So after receiving the piece of bread , he left immediately; and ( AP ) it was night.

31 Therefore when he had left, Jesus *said, “Now [ n ] is ( AQ ) the Son of Man ( AR ) glorified, and ( AS ) God [ o ] is glorified in Him; 32 [ p ] if God is glorified in Him, ( AT ) God will also glorify Him in Himself, and will glorify Him immediately. 33 ( AU ) Little children, I am still with you ( AV ) a little longer. ( AW ) You will look for Me; and just as I said to the [ q ] Jews, now I also say to you: ‘Where I am going, you cannot come.’ 34 I am giving you a ( AX ) new commandment, ( AY ) that you love one another; ( AZ ) just as I have loved you, that you also love one another. 35 ( BA ) By this all people will know that you are My disciples: if you have love for one another.”

36 Simon Peter *said to Him, “Lord, where are You going?” Jesus answered, ( BB ) Where I am going, you cannot follow Me now; but ( BC ) you will follow later.” 37 Peter *said to Him, “Lord, why can I not follow You right now? ( BD ) I will lay down my life for You.” 38 Jesus *replied, “Will you lay down your life for Me? Truly, truly I say to you, ( BE ) a rooster will not crow until you deny Me three times.

Jesus Washes His Disciples’ Feet

13 It was just before the Passover Festival. ( A ) Jesus knew that the hour had come ( B ) for him to leave this world and go to the Father. ( C ) Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.

2 The evening meal was in progress, and the devil had already prompted Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, to betray Jesus. ( D ) 3 Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, ( E ) and that he had come from God ( F ) and was returning to God; 4 so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. ( G ) 5 After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, ( H ) drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.

6 He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, are you going to wash my feet?”

7 Jesus replied, “You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.” ( I )

8 “No,” said Peter, “you shall never wash my feet.”

Jesus answered, “Unless I wash you, you have no part with me.”

9 “Then, Lord,” Simon Peter replied, “not just my feet but my hands and my head as well!”

10 Jesus answered, “Those who have had a bath need only to wash their feet; their whole body is clean. And you are clean, ( J ) though not every one of you.” ( K ) 11 For he knew who was going to betray him, ( L ) and that was why he said not every one was clean.

12 When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. “Do you understand what I have done for you?” he asked them. 13 “You call me ‘Teacher’ ( M ) and ‘Lord,’ ( N ) and rightly so, for that is what I am. 14 Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. ( O ) 15 I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. ( P ) 16 Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, ( Q ) nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. 17 Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them. ( R )

Jesus Predicts His Betrayal

18 “I am not referring to all of you; ( S ) I know those I have chosen. ( T ) But this is to fulfill this passage of Scripture: ( U ) ‘He who shared my bread ( V ) has turned [ a ] ( W ) against me.’ [ b ] ( X )

19 “I am telling you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe ( Y ) that I am who I am. ( Z ) 20 Very truly I tell you, whoever accepts anyone I send accepts me; and whoever accepts me accepts the one who sent me.” ( AA )

21 After he had said this, Jesus was troubled in spirit ( AB ) and testified, “Very truly I tell you, one of you is going to betray me.” ( AC )

22 His disciples stared at one another, at a loss to know which of them he meant. 23 One of them, the disciple whom Jesus loved, ( AD ) was reclining next to him. 24 Simon Peter motioned to this disciple and said, “Ask him which one he means.”

25 Leaning back against Jesus, he asked him, “Lord, who is it?” ( AE )

26 Jesus answered, “It is the one to whom I will give this piece of bread when I have dipped it in the dish.” Then, dipping the piece of bread, he gave it to Judas, ( AF ) the son of Simon Iscariot. 27 As soon as Judas took the bread, Satan entered into him. ( AG )

So Jesus told him, “What you are about to do, do quickly.” 28 But no one at the meal understood why Jesus said this to him. 29 Since Judas had charge of the money, ( AH ) some thought Jesus was telling him to buy what was needed for the festival, ( AI ) or to give something to the poor. ( AJ ) 30 As soon as Judas had taken the bread, he went out. And it was night. ( AK )

Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial ( AL )

31 When he was gone, Jesus said, “Now the Son of Man ( AM ) is glorified ( AN ) and God is glorified in him. ( AO ) 32 If God is glorified in him, [ c ] God will glorify the Son in himself, ( AP ) and will glorify him at once.

33 “My children, I will be with you only a little longer. You will look for me, and just as I told the Jews, so I tell you now: Where I am going, you cannot come. ( AQ )

34 “A new command ( AR ) I give you: Love one another. ( AS ) As I have loved you, so you must love one another. ( AT ) 35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” ( AU )

36 Simon Peter asked him, “Lord, where are you going?” ( AV )

Jesus replied, “Where I am going, you cannot follow now, ( AW ) but you will follow later.” ( AX )

37 Peter asked, “Lord, why can’t I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.”

38 Then Jesus answered, “Will you really lay down your life for me? Very truly I tell you, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times! ( AY )
