The Word became human

1 In the beginning, the Word was already there. The Word was with God. The Word was God. [ a ] 2 He was with God from the beginning. 3 God made all things through the Word. God did not make anything without him. 4 It is the Word who caused everything to live. Because of this, he has brought light to all people. 5 The light shines in the dark, and the dark cannot put out the light. [ b ]

6 God sent a man to bring his message. His name was John. [ c ] 7 He came to tell people about the light. God wanted everyone to believe in the one who is the light. 8 John himself was not that light. God sent him to tell people about the light. 9 The true light gives light to every person. That light was now coming into the world.

10 The Word was now in the world. God had made the world through him. But the people in the world did not know who he was. 11 He came to his own place, but his own people did not accept him. 12 Some people did accept him and they believed in him. He gave authority to those people to become God's children. 13 They did not become God's children in the usual human way. They were not born because some people wanted to have children. They were not born because of what any man decided. No! They were born from God.

14 The Word became a man. He lived among us. We saw his great glory. He has the glory of the Father's one true Son. He is full of God's grace and truth.

15 John told people about the Word. He shouted, ‘This is the man that I told you about. He comes after me. But he is greater than I am. He was already there before I was born.’ 16 The Word is full of everything that we need. We have all received one good thing after another good thing. 17 God gave his Law to us through Moses. But Jesus Christ brought God's grace and his truth to us. 18 Nobody has ever seen God. But God's only Son has shown God to us. He is very near to the Father, and he himself is God.

John the Baptist is not the Messiah

19 The Jewish leaders sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask John, ‘Who are you?’ [ d ] 20 John did not refuse to answer. He said, ‘I am not the Messiah.’ 21 So they asked him, ‘So who are you? Are you Elijah?’ John said, ‘No, I am not.’ They asked, ‘Are you the Prophet?’ John answered, ‘No.’

22 Then they said, ‘Tell us who you are. We must say something to the people who sent us. What do you say about yourself?’ 23 He said, ‘I am the voice of somebody shouting in the wilderness:

“The Lord will come soon.
Make a straight path for him to follow.”
That is what the prophet Isaiah said a long time ago.’ [ e ]

24 The men who came to ask these questions were Pharisees. 25 They said to John, ‘You say that you are not the Messiah, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet. So why do you baptize people?’ 26 John replied, ‘I baptize people with water. But there is someone here among you that you do not know. 27 He is the one who comes after me. I am not good enough even to undo his shoes for him.’

28 All these things happened at a place east from the Jordan River. It was a village called Bethany. John was baptizing people there.

29 The next day, John saw Jesus, who was coming towards him. John said, ‘Look! Here is the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of people in the world. [ f ] 30 This is the man that I told you about. I told you, “He comes after me, but he is greater than I am. He was already there before I was born.” 31 I did not know him. But I had to show Israel's people who he was. That is why I am baptizing people with water.’

32 Then John told them, ‘I saw God's Spirit come down from heaven. He came down like a dove and he stayed on Jesus. 33 I would not have known who Jesus was. But God had sent me to baptize people with water. And God told me, “You will see the Spirit come down. He will stay on someone. That is the person who will baptize people with my Holy Spirit.” 34 Now I have seen this. So I can tell you that this is God's Son.’

Jesus' first disciples

35 John was standing there again the next day, with two of his disciples. 36 He saw Jesus, who was walking past them. John said, ‘Look! Here is the Lamb of God.’ 37 When the two disciples heard this, they followed Jesus. 38 Then Jesus turned round. He saw that they were following him. He asked them, ‘What do you want?’ They said, ‘Rabbi (which means “Teacher”), where are you staying?’ 39 Jesus replied, ‘Come with me and you will see.’ So they went with him. They saw where he was staying. It was about four o'clock in the afternoon. And they stayed with him that day.

40 Andrew was one of the two disciples who had followed Jesus. They had heard what John had said about Jesus. Andrew was Simon Peter's brother. 41 The first thing that Andrew did was to find his brother, Simon. Andrew said to Simon, ‘We have found the Messiah.’ (‘Messiah’ and ‘Christ’ mean the same.) 42 Then he brought Simon to Jesus. Jesus looked at Simon and he said, ‘You are Simon, John's son. Your name will be Cephas.’ This name is the same as Peter, which means ‘rock’.

43 The next day, Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He met Philip, and Jesus said to Philip, ‘Follow me.’ 44 Philip, like Andrew and Peter, came from the town of Bethsaida. 45 Philip went to find Nathanael. He told Nathanael, ‘We have found the man that Moses wrote about in the book of God's Law. The prophets also wrote about him. He is Jesus, who is Joseph's son, from Nazareth.’ 46 Nathanael said, ‘I did not think that anything good could come from Nazareth!’ Philip replied, ‘Come and see.’

47 Jesus saw Nathanael, who was coming towards him. Jesus said, ‘Here is a completely honest man. That is what a person from Israel should really be like.’ 48 Nathanael asked, ‘How do you know me?’ Jesus answered, ‘I saw you before Philip asked you to come. I saw you when you were under the fig tree.’ 49 Nathanael said, ‘Teacher, you are the Son of God. You are the King of Israel.’ 50 Jesus said to him, ‘I told you that I saw you under the fig tree. Now you believe me because I told you that. But you will see much greater things than that.’ 51 And Jesus said to him, ‘I tell you this: You will see heaven open. You will see God's angels. They will be going up and they will be coming down on the Son of Man.’ [ g ]

Footnotes

  1. 1:1 Jesus Christ is the Word of God. God shows himself to us in Jesus. So Jesus is like God's message to us. God speaks to us in a way that we can understand, because Jesus lived as a real person.
  2. 1:5 The Word (Jesus Christ) is like light. He shows us what is true. The dark means the power of God's enemy, Satan. Satan tries to hide what is true. God's light shines in the dark places and Satan cannot stop that light. Jesus said that he himself was the light of the world. See John 8:12 ; 9:5 .
  3. 1:6 This was John the Baptist. He was not the man called John who wrote this book.
  4. 1:19 Israel's people believed that God would send his prophet Elijah and at least one other great prophet to them. They believed that these prophets must come before God would send his Messiah.
  5. 1:23 See Isaiah 40:3 .
  6. 1:29 John the Baptist called Jesus ‘God's Lamb’. Then the people would remember the lambs that they killed for the Passover meal. Jesus Christ was God's Lamb, who came to die on our behalf. He came to save us from sin.
  7. 1:51 Jesus called himself the ‘Son of Man’. He is the true man who came to earth from God. He came with God's authority. The prophets spoke about him (for example, in Daniel 7:13 ). He is the Messiah.

Christ Comes to the World

1 Before the world began, the Word [ a ] was there. The Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was there with God in the beginning. 3 Everything was made through him, and nothing was made without him. 4 In him there was life, and that life was a light for the people of the world. 5 The light [ b ] shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not defeated [ c ] it.

6 There was a man named John, who was sent by God. 7 He came to tell people about the light. Through him all people could hear about the light and believe. 8 John was not the light. But he came to tell people about the light. 9 The true light was coming into the world. This is the true light that gives light to all people.

10 The Word was already in the world. The world was made through him, but the world did not know him. 11 He came to the world that was his own. And his own people did not accept him. 12 But some people did accept him. They believed in him, and he gave them the right to become children of God. 13 They became God’s children, but not in the way babies are usually born. It was not because of any human desire or plan. They were born from God himself.

14 The Word became a man and lived among us. We saw his divine greatness—the greatness that belongs to the only Son of the Father. The Word was full of grace and truth. 15 John told people about him. He said loudly, “This is the one I was talking about when I said, ‘The one who is coming after me is greater than I am, because he was living before I was even born.’”

16 Yes, the Word was full of grace and truth, and from him we all received one blessing after another. [ d ] 17 That is, the law was given to us through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18 No one has ever seen God. The only Son is the one who has shown us what God is like. He is himself God and is very close to the Father. [ e ]

John Tells About the Messiah ( A )

19 The Jewish leaders in Jerusalem sent some priests and Levites to John to ask him, “Who are you?” He told them the truth. 20 Without any hesitation he said openly and plainly, “I am not the Messiah.”

21 They asked him, “Then who are you? Are you Elijah?”

He answered, “No, I am not Elijah.”

They asked, “Are you the Prophet [ f ] ?”

He answered, “No, I am not the Prophet.”

22 Then they said, “Who are you? Tell us about yourself. Give us an answer to tell the people who sent us. What do you say about yourself?”

23 John told them the words of the prophet Isaiah:

“I am the voice of someone shouting in the desert:
‘Make a straight road ready for the Lord.’” ( B )

24 These Jews were sent from the Pharisees. 25 They said to John, “You say you are not the Messiah. You say you are not Elijah or the Prophet. Then why do you baptize people?”

26 John answered, “I baptize people with water. But there is someone here with you that you don’t know. 27 He is the one who is coming later. I am not good enough to be the slave who unties the strings on his sandals.”

28 These things all happened at Bethany on the other side of the Jordan River. This is where John was baptizing people.

Jesus, the Lamb of God

29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God. He takes away the sins of the world! 30 This is the one I was talking about when I said, ‘There is a man coming after me who is greater than I am, because he was living even before I was born.’ 31 I did not know who he was. But I came baptizing people with water so that Israel could know that he is the Messiah. [ g ]

32-34 Then John said this for everyone to hear: “I also did not know who the Messiah was. But the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, ‘You will see the Spirit come down and rest on a man. He is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’ I have seen this happen. I saw the Spirit come down from heaven like a dove and rest on this man. So this is what I tell people: ‘He is the Son of God.’ [ h ]

The First Followers of Jesus

35 The next day John was there again and had two of his followers with him. 36 He saw Jesus walking by and said, “Look, the Lamb of God!”

37 The two followers heard him say this, so they followed Jesus. 38 Jesus turned and saw the two men following him. He asked, “What do you want?”

They said, “Rabbi, where are you staying?” (“Rabbi” means “Teacher.”)

39 He answered, “Come with me and you will see.” So the two men went with him. They saw the place where he was staying, and they stayed there with him that day. It was about four o’clock.

40 These men followed Jesus after they had heard about him from John. One of them was Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter. 41 The first thing Andrew did was to go and find his brother Simon. Andrew said to him, “We have found the Messiah.” (“Messiah” means “Christ.”)

42 Then Andrew brought Simon to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon, the son of John. You will be called Cephas.” (“Cephas” means “Peter. [ i ] ”)

43 The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He met Philip and said to him, “Follow me.” 44 Philip was from the town of Bethsaida, the same as Andrew and Peter. 45 Philip found Nathanael and told him, “We have found the man that Moses wrote about in the law. The prophets wrote about him too. He is Jesus, the son of Joseph. He is from Nazareth.”

46 But Nathanael said to Philip, “Nazareth! Can anything good come from Nazareth?”

Philip answered, “Come and see.”

47 Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said, “This man coming is a true Israelite, one you can trust. [ j ]

48 Nathanael asked, “How do you know me?”

Jesus answered, “I saw you when you were under the fig tree, before Philip told you about me.”

49 Then Nathanael said, “Teacher, you are the Son of God. You are the King of Israel.”

50 Jesus said to him, “Do you believe this just because I said I saw you under the fig tree? You will see much greater things than that!” 51 Then he said, “Believe me when I say that you will all see heaven open. You will see ‘angels of God going up and coming down’ [ k ] on the Son of Man.”

Footnotes

  1. John 1:1 Word The Greek word is “ logos ,” meaning any kind of communication. It could be translated “message.” Here, it describes Jesus Christ before he was sent to earth as a human being, which is the way God chose to tell the world about himself. Also in verses 10, 14, 16.
  2. John 1:5 light Meaning Christ, the Word, who brought to the world understanding about God. Also in verse 7.
  3. John 1:5 defeated Or “understood.”
  4. John 1:16 one blessing after another Literally, “grace in place of grace.”
  5. John 1:18 The only Son … Father Or more literally, “The only Son , God, who is very close to the Father, has shown us what he is like.” Some other Greek copies say, “The only Son is very close to the Father and has shown us what he is like.”
  6. John 1:21 Prophet They probably meant the prophet that God told Moses he would send. See Deut. 18:15-19. Also in verse 24.
  7. John 1:31 so that … the Messiah Literally, “so that he might be revealed as the Messiah to Israel.” See “ Messiah ” in the Word List.
  8. John 1:32 He is the Son of God Some very early Greek copies have “He is the chosen one of God.”
  9. John 1:42 Peter The Greek name “Peter,” like the Aramaic name “Cephas,” means “rock.”
  10. John 1:47 one you can trust Literally, “in whom is no deceit.” In the Old Testament, Israel’s other name, Jacob, is explained with words that mean “deceit” or “trickery,” for which he was well known. See Gen. 27:35, 36.
  11. John 1:51 Quote from Gen. 28:12 .

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

2 The same was in the beginning with God.

3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.

4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men.

5 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.

6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.

7 The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe.

8 He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light.

9 That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.

10 He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.

11 He came unto his own, and his own received him not.

12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:

13 Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

15 John bare witness of him, and cried, saying, This was he of whom I spake, He that cometh after me is preferred before me: for he was before me.

16 And of his fulness have all we received, and grace for grace.

17 For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.

18 No man hath seen God at any time, the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.

19 And this is the record of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, Who art thou?

20 And he confessed, and denied not; but confessed, I am not the Christ.

21 And they asked him, What then? Art thou Elias? And he saith, I am not. Art thou that prophet? And he answered, No.

22 Then said they unto him, Who art thou? that we may give an answer to them that sent us. What sayest thou of thyself?

23 He said, I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord, as said the prophet Esaias.

24 And they which were sent were of the Pharisees.

25 And they asked him, and said unto him, Why baptizest thou then, if thou be not that Christ, nor Elias, neither that prophet?

26 John answered them, saying, I baptize with water: but there standeth one among you, whom ye know not;

27 He it is, who coming after me is preferred before me, whose shoe's latchet I am not worthy to unloose.

28 These things were done in Bethabara beyond Jordan, where John was baptizing.

29 The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.

30 This is he of whom I said, After me cometh a man which is preferred before me: for he was before me.

31 And I knew him not: but that he should be made manifest to Israel, therefore am I come baptizing with water.

32 And John bare record, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him.

33 And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost.

34 And I saw, and bare record that this is the Son of God.

35 Again the next day after John stood, and two of his disciples;

36 And looking upon Jesus as he walked, he saith, Behold the Lamb of God!

37 And the two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus.

38 Then Jesus turned, and saw them following, and saith unto them, What seek ye? They said unto him, Rabbi, (which is to say, being interpreted, Master,) where dwellest thou?

39 He saith unto them, Come and see. They came and saw where he dwelt, and abode with him that day: for it was about the tenth hour.

40 One of the two which heard John speak, and followed him, was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother.

41 He first findeth his own brother Simon, and saith unto him, We have found the Messias, which is, being interpreted, the Christ.

42 And he brought him to Jesus. And when Jesus beheld him, he said, Thou art Simon the son of Jona: thou shalt be called Cephas, which is by interpretation, A stone.

43 The day following Jesus would go forth into Galilee, and findeth Philip, and saith unto him, Follow me.

44 Now Philip was of Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter.

45 Philip findeth Nathanael, and saith unto him, We have found him, of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets, did write, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.

46 And Nathanael said unto him, Can there any good thing come out of Nazareth? Philip saith unto him, Come and see.

47 Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, and saith of him, Behold an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile!

48 Nathanael saith unto him, Whence knowest thou me? Jesus answered and said unto him, Before that Philip called thee, when thou wast under the fig tree, I saw thee.

49 Nathanael answered and saith unto him, Rabbi, thou art the Son of God; thou art the King of Israel.

50 Jesus answered and said unto him, Because I said unto thee, I saw thee under the fig tree, believest thou? thou shalt see greater things than these.

51 And he saith unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Hereafter ye shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man.

1 ( A ) In the beginning was ( B ) the Word, and the Word was ( C ) with God, and ( D ) the Word was God. 2 [ a ] He was in the beginning with God. 3 ( E ) All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him [ b ] not even one thing came into being that has come into being. 4 ( F ) In Him was life, and the life was ( G ) the Light of mankind. 5 And ( H ) the Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not [ c ] grasp it.

The Witness John the Baptist

6 A man [ d ] came, one sent from God, and his name was ( I ) John. 7 [ e ] He came [ f ] ( J ) as a witness, to testify about the Light, ( K ) so that all might believe through him. 8 [ g ] ( L ) He was not the Light, but he came to testify about the Light.

9 [ h ] This was ( M ) the true Light [ i ] that, coming into the world, enlightens every person. 10 He was in the world, and ( N ) the world came into being through Him, and yet the world did not [ j ] know Him. 11 He came to His [ k ] own, and His own people did not [ l ] accept Him. 12 But [ m ] as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become ( O ) children of God, ( P ) to those who [ n ] believe in His name, 13 ( Q ) who were [ o ] born, not of [ p ] blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of a man, but of God.

The Word Made Flesh

14 And ( R ) the Word ( S ) became flesh, and ( T ) dwelt among us; and ( U ) we saw His glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of ( V ) grace and ( W ) truth. 15 John * ( X ) testified about Him and called out, saying, “This was He of whom I said, ‘ ( Y ) He who is coming after me has proved to be [ q ] my superior, ( Z ) because He existed before me.’” 16 For of His ( AA ) fullness [ r ] we have all received, and [ s ] grace upon grace. 17 For ( AB ) the Law was given through Moses; ( AC ) grace and ( AD ) truth [ t ] were realized through Jesus Christ. 18 ( AE ) No one has seen God at any time; ( AF ) God the only Son , who is ( AG ) in the [ u ] arms of the Father, ( AH ) He has [ v ] explained Him .

The Testimony of John the Baptist

19 This is ( AI ) the testimony of John, when ( AJ ) the Jews sent priests and Levites to him ( AK ) from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?” 20 And he confessed and did not deny; and this is what he confessed: “ ( AL ) I am not the [ w ] Christ.” 21 And so they asked him, “What then? Are you ( AM ) Elijah?” And he *said, “I am not.” “Are you ( AN ) the Prophet?” And he answered, “No.” 22 Then they said to him, “Who are you? Tell us , so that we may give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?” 23 He said, “I am ( AO ) the voice of one calling [ x ] out in the wilderness , ‘ Make the way of the Lord straight ,’ as Isaiah the prophet said.”

24 And the messengers had been sent from the Pharisees. 25 They asked him, and said to him, “Why then are you baptizing, if you are not the [ y ] Christ, nor Elijah, nor ( AP ) the Prophet?” 26 John answered them, saying, “ ( AQ ) I baptize [ z ] in water, but among you stands One whom you do not know. 27 It is ( AR ) He who comes after me, of whom I am not worthy even to untie the ( AS ) strap of His sandal.” 28 These things took place in Bethany ( AT ) beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing people .

29 The next day he *saw Jesus coming to him, and *said, “Behold, ( AU ) the Lamb of God who ( AV ) takes away the sin of the world! 30 This is He in behalf of whom I said, ‘ ( AW ) After me is coming a Man who has proved to be [ aa ] my superior, ( AX ) because He existed before me.’ 31 And I did not recognize [ ab ] Him, but so that He would be revealed to Israel, I came baptizing [ ac ] in water.” 32 And John ( AY ) testified, saying, “ ( AZ ) I have seen the Spirit descending as a dove out of heaven, and He remained upon Him. 33 And I did not recognize [ ad ] Him, but He who sent me to baptize [ ae ] in water said to me, ‘He upon whom you see the Spirit descending and remaining upon Him, ( BA ) this is the One who baptizes [ af ] in the Holy Spirit.’ 34 And I myself have seen, and have testified that this is ( BB ) the [ ag ] Son of God.”

Jesus’ Public Ministry; First Converts

35 Again ( BC ) the next day John was standing [ ah ] with two of his disciples, 36 and he looked at Jesus as He walked, and *said, “Behold, ( BD ) the Lamb of God!” 37 And the two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus. 38 And Jesus turned and saw them following, and *said to them, “What are you seeking?” They said to Him, “ ( BE ) Rabbi (which translated means Teacher), where are You staying?” 39 He *said to them, “Come, and you will see.” So they came and saw where He was staying, and they stayed with Him that day; it was about the [ ai ] tenth hour. 40 ( BF ) One of the two who heard John speak , and followed Him, was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. 41 He first *found his own brother Simon and *said to him, “We have found the ( BG ) Messiah” (which translated means [ aj ] Christ). 42 He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon the son of [ ak ] ( BH ) John; you shall be called ( BI ) Cephas” (which is translated [ al ] ( BJ ) Peter).

43 ( BK ) The next day He [ am ] decided to go to ( BL ) Galilee, and He *found ( BM ) Philip. And Jesus *said to him, ( BN ) Follow Me.” 44 Now ( BO ) Philip was from ( BP ) Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. 45 ( BQ ) Philip *found ( BR ) Nathanael and *said to him, “We have found Him of whom ( BS ) Moses wrote in the Law, and ( BT ) the prophets also wrote : Jesus ( BU ) the son of Joseph, from ( BV ) Nazareth!” 46 Nathanael said to him, “ ( BW ) Can anything good be from Nazareth?” ( BX ) Philip *said to him, “Come and see.” 47 Jesus saw Nathanael coming to Him, and *said of him, “Here is truly an ( BY ) Israelite, in whom there is no deceit!” 48 Nathanael *said to Him, “How do You know me?” Jesus answered and said to him, “Before ( BZ ) Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.” 49 Nathanael answered Him, “ ( CA ) Rabbi, You are ( CB ) the Son of God; You are the ( CC ) King of Israel!” 50 Jesus answered and said to him, “Because I said to you that I saw you under the fig tree, do you believe? You will see greater things than these.” 51 And He *said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see ( CD ) heaven opened and ( CE ) the angels of God ascending and descending on ( CF ) the Son of Man.”

The Word Became Flesh

1 In the beginning was the Word, ( A ) and the Word was with God, ( B ) and the Word was God. ( C ) 2 He was with God in the beginning. ( D ) 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. ( E ) 4 In him was life, ( F ) and that life was the light ( G ) of all mankind. 5 The light shines in the darkness, ( H ) and the darkness has not overcome [ a ] it. ( I )

6 There was a man sent from God whose name was John. ( J ) 7 He came as a witness to testify ( K ) concerning that light, so that through him all might believe. ( L ) 8 He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light.

9 The true light ( M ) that gives light to everyone ( N ) was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, ( O ) the world did not recognize him. 11 He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. ( P ) 12 Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed ( Q ) in his name, ( R ) he gave the right to become children of God ( S ) 13 children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God. ( T )

14 The Word became flesh ( U ) and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, ( V ) the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace ( W ) and truth. ( X )

15 (John testified ( Y ) concerning him. He cried out, saying, “This is the one I spoke about when I said, ‘He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.’”) ( Z ) 16 Out of his fullness ( AA ) we have all received grace ( AB ) in place of grace already given. 17 For the law was given through Moses; ( AC ) grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. ( AD ) 18 No one has ever seen God, ( AE ) but the one and only Son, who is himself God and [ b ] ( AF ) is in closest relationship with the Father, has made him known.

John the Baptist Denies Being the Messiah

19 Now this was John’s ( AG ) testimony when the Jewish leaders [ c ] ( AH ) in Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him who he was. 20 He did not fail to confess, but confessed freely, “I am not the Messiah.” ( AI )

21 They asked him, “Then who are you? Are you Elijah?” ( AJ )

He said, “I am not.”

“Are you the Prophet?” ( AK )

He answered, “No.”

22 Finally they said, “Who are you? Give us an answer to take back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?”

23 John replied in the words of Isaiah the prophet, “I am the voice of one calling in the wilderness, ( AL ) ‘Make straight the way for the Lord.’” [ d ] ( AM )

24 Now the Pharisees who had been sent 25 questioned him, “Why then do you baptize if you are not the Messiah, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?”

26 “I baptize with [ e ] water,” ( AN ) John replied, “but among you stands one you do not know. 27 He is the one who comes after me, ( AO ) the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie.” ( AP )

28 This all happened at Bethany on the other side of the Jordan, ( AQ ) where John was baptizing.

John Testifies About Jesus

29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, ( AR ) who takes away the sin of the world! ( AS ) 30 This is the one I meant when I said, ‘A man who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.’ ( AT ) 31 I myself did not know him, but the reason I came baptizing with water was that he might be revealed to Israel.”

32 Then John gave this testimony: “I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him. ( AU ) 33 And I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water ( AV ) told me, ‘The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’ ( AW ) 34 I have seen and I testify that this is God’s Chosen One.” [ f ] ( AX )

John’s Disciples Follow Jesus ( AY )

35 The next day John ( AZ ) was there again with two of his disciples. 36 When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, “Look, the Lamb of God!” ( BA )

37 When the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus. 38 Turning around, Jesus saw them following and asked, “What do you want?”

They said, “Rabbi” ( BB ) (which means “Teacher”), “where are you staying?”

39 “Come,” he replied, “and you will see.”

So they went and saw where he was staying, and they spent that day with him. It was about four in the afternoon.

40 Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said and who had followed Jesus. 41 The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, “We have found the Messiah” (that is, the Christ). ( BC ) 42 And he brought him to Jesus.

Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon son of John. You will be called ( BD ) Cephas” (which, when translated, is Peter [ g ] ). ( BE )

Jesus Calls Philip and Nathanael

43 The next day Jesus decided to leave for Galilee. Finding Philip, ( BF ) he said to him, “Follow me.” ( BG )

44 Philip, like Andrew and Peter, was from the town of Bethsaida. ( BH ) 45 Philip found Nathanael ( BI ) and told him, “We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law, ( BJ ) and about whom the prophets also wrote ( BK ) —Jesus of Nazareth, ( BL ) the son of Joseph.” ( BM )

46 “Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?” ( BN ) Nathanael asked.

“Come and see,” said Philip.

47 When Jesus saw Nathanael approaching, he said of him, “Here truly is an Israelite ( BO ) in whom there is no deceit.” ( BP )

48 “How do you know me?” Nathanael asked.

Jesus answered, “I saw you while you were still under the fig tree before Philip called you.”

49 Then Nathanael declared, “Rabbi, ( BQ ) you are the Son of God; ( BR ) you are the king of Israel.” ( BS )

50 Jesus said, “You believe [ h ] because I told you I saw you under the fig tree. You will see greater things than that.” 51 He then added, “Very truly I tell you, [ i ] you [ j ] will see ‘heaven open, ( BT ) and the angels of God ascending and descending ( BU ) on’ [ k ] the Son of Man.” ( BV )
