- Joel Chapter 2
2 Blow the trumpet in Zion.
Tell the people on the Lord 's hill that they must watch for trouble.
All the people who live in this country will be afraid.
They will be afraid because the day of the Lord is coming.
It is very near.
2 That day will be sad and dark.
There will be dark clouds.
A great big army is coming.
It comes across the sky like light in the morning.
A great army like this has never come before.
And it will never come again in future years.
3 Fire goes in front of the army. [ a ]
It burns everything behind them.
The land in front of them is like the Garden of Eden. [ b ]
Behind them it is like a desert.
They leave nothing behind them.
4 They look like horses.
And they run fast to the war.
5 Their noise is like the noise of many feet.
They jump over the mountains
as fast as fire burns dry grass.
They are like a great army ready for a fight.
6 Nations that see them are very afraid.
Every face changes colour.
7 They run together like an army into a fight.
They climb walls like soldiers.
They march on in a straight line.
They do not turn away.
8 They do not push each other away.
Each one of them goes straight on.
You can put weapons in their path
but they go straight on.
9 They run towards the city.
They run along the wall.
They climb into houses.
They go through the windows like robbers.
10 The earth in front of them moves.
The sky itself moves.
The sun and moon are dark
and the stars do not give any light.
11 The Lord shouts aloud
as he leads his army.
We cannot count his soldiers.
Those who obey him are very strong.
The day of the Lord is powerful.
It makes us afraid.
Not many of us will be alive after it has gone. [ c ]
12 ‘Even now,’ the Lord says,
‘return to me and put me first.
Eat no food. Cry and be very sad.
13 Stop pulling your clothes to pieces. That does not help.
Show me instead that you are really sorry.’
Return to the Lord , your God.
He is kind and full of grace.
He does not quickly become angry, and he is full of love.
He is sad that he had to cause troubles for you.
14 Perhaps he will change his mind and he will be sorry.
He may send you blessings of food and drink.
Then you can offer gifts to the Lord your God.
15 Blow the trumpet in Zion.
Tell the people that they must not eat any food.
Tell the people that they must all come to worship him.
16 Tell the people that they must all come.
Make them all ready to serve the Lord .
Bring the old people together.
Bring the children – even the smallest ones.
Every new husband must leave his room.
Every wife must leave her secret room.
17 There are priests who go in front of the Lord .
They must cry as they go from the temple door to the altar.
They must say to the Lord , ‘Do not hurt your people.
Do not let the people in other countries laugh at your own people.
They will point at them. And they will say that they have no value.
They will say that we have no God.’
18 Then the Lord will be careful for his land.
He will be kind to his people.
19 He will answer them and he will say,
‘I am giving you new wine and food and oil.
You will have enough to fill you up.
I will never again let people in other countries laugh about you.
20 I will send the army from the north far from you.
I will push it into empty land where nothing grows.
I will make the front of it go into the sea on the east.
And I will make the back of it go into the sea on the west.
I will make its smell rise up high
because it has done great things.’
21 Do not be afraid, my own land!
Be very happy.
Be sure that the Lord has done great things.
22 Do not be afraid, wild animals.
The fields in the wilderness are becoming green.
Fruit is growing on the trees.
The fig tree and the vine are giving much fruit.
23 Shout with joy, people in Zion!
Be very happy because of the things that the Lord your God has done.
He has given you just enough autumn rain.
He has given you the winter rain,
and the summer rain, as before.
24 He will fill your stores with seeds to make bread.
And he will fill your jars with new wine and oil.
25 ‘I will give you back the years that the locusts have eaten.
I will give you all that the great locust and the young locust,
and other locusts and their groups have eaten.
All that my great army has eaten I will give you. [ d ]
26 You will have plenty to eat. You will be full.
You will praise the name of the Lord your God.
He has done great things for you.
My people will never again be ashamed.
27 Then you will know that I am in Israel.
You will know that I am the Lord your God.
And you will know that there is no other God.
My people will never again be ashamed.’
28 After that, I will pour out my Holy Spirit on all people.
Your sons and daughters will be prophets.
Your old men will dream and
your young men will see pictures in their minds. (The Lord will send these to them.)
29 I will pour out my Spirit on all my servants,
on men and on women in those days. [ e ]
30 I will do strange things in the sky and on the earth.
I will send blood and fire and clouds of smoke.
31 The sun will become dark and the moon will become red.
Then the great and frightening day of the Lord will come.
32 Everyone who asks the Lord for help will be safe.
They will be safe if they believe in his name.
The Lord will save the people on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem. [ f ]
He has promised this to those people whom he has asked to come to him.
2 Blow the trumpet on Zion.
Shout a warning on my holy mountain.
Let all the people who live in the land shake with fear.
The Lord ’s special day is coming;
it is near.
2 It will be a dark, gloomy day.
It will be a dark and cloudy day.
At sunrise you will see the army spread over the mountains.
It will be a great and powerful army.
There has never been anything like it before,
and there will never be anything like it again.
3 The army will destroy the land like a burning fire.
In front of them the land will be like the Garden of Eden.
Behind them the land will be like an empty desert.
Nothing will escape them.
4 They look like horses.
They run like war horses.
5 Listen to them.
It is like the noise of chariots
riding over the mountains.
It is like the noise of flames
burning the chaff.
They are a powerful people,
who are ready for war.
6 Before this army, people shake with fear.
Their faces become pale from fear.
7 The soldiers run fast.
They climb over the walls.
Each soldier marches straight ahead.
They don’t move from their path.
8 They don’t trip each other.
Each soldier walks in his own path.
If one of the soldiers is hit and falls down,
the others keep right on marching.
9 They run to the city.
They quickly climb over the wall.
They climb into the houses.
They climb through the windows like thieves.
10 Before them, earth and sky shake.
The sun and the moon become dark, and the stars stop shining.
11 The Lord calls loudly to his army.
His camp is very large.
The army obeys his commands.
His army is very powerful.
The Lord ’s special day is a great and terrible day.
No one can stop it.
12 This is the Lord ’s message:
“Now come back to me with all your heart.
Cry and mourn, and don’t eat anything!
Show that you are sad for doing wrong.
13 Tear your hearts,
not your clothes. [ a ] ”
Come back to the Lord your God.
He is kind and merciful.
He does not become angry quickly.
He has great love.
Maybe he will change his mind
about the bad punishment he planned.
14 Who knows, maybe he will change his mind
and leave behind a blessing for you.
Then you can give grain and drink offerings
to the Lord your God.
15 Blow the trumpet at Zion.
Call for a special meeting.
Call for a special time of fasting.
16 Bring the people together.
Call for a special meeting.
Bring together the old men,
the children, and the small babies still at their mothers’ breasts.
Let the bride and her new husband
come from their bedroom.
17 Let the priests, the Lord ’s servants,
cry between the porch [ b ] and the altar.
All of them should say this: “ Lord , have mercy on your people.
Don’t let your people be put to shame.
Don’t let other people tell jokes about your people.
Don’t let the other nations laugh at us and say,
‘Where is their God?’”
18 Then the Lord cared very much about his land.
He felt sorry for his people.
19 The Lord spoke to his people.
He said, “I will send you grain, wine, and oil.
You will have plenty.
I will not shame you among the nations anymore.
20 No, I will force the people from the north [ c ] to leave your land
and make them go into a dry, empty land.
Some of them will go to the eastern sea
and some to the western sea.
They did such terrible things,
but they will be like a dead and rotting body.
There will be such a terrible smell!”
21 Land, don’t be afraid.
Be happy and full of joy.
The Lord will do great things.
22 Animals of the field, don’t be afraid.
The desert pastures will grow grass.
The trees will grow fruit.
The fig trees and the vines will grow plenty of fruit.
23 So be happy, people of Zion.
Be joyful in the Lord your God.
He is good and will give you rain.
He will send the early rains and the late rains as before.
24 The threshing floors will be filled with wheat,
and the barrels will overflow with wine and olive oil.
25 “I, the Lord, sent my army against you.
The swarming locusts and the hopping locusts
and the destroying locusts and the cutting locusts [ d ] ate everything you had.
But I will pay you back
for those years of trouble.
26 Then you will have plenty to eat.
You will be full.
You will praise the name of the Lord your God.
He has done wonderful things for you.
My people will never again be ashamed.
27 You will know that I am with Israel.
You will know that I am the Lord your God.
There is no other God.
My people will never be ashamed again.”
28 “After this,
I will pour out my Spirit on all kinds of people.
Your sons and daughters will prophesy,
your old men will have dreams,
and your young men will see visions.
29 In those days I will pour out my Spirit
even on servants, both men and women.
30 I will work wonders in the sky and on the earth.
There will be blood, fire, and thick smoke.
31 The sun will be changed into darkness,
and the moon will be as red as blood.
Then the great and fearful day of the Lord will come!
32 And everyone who trusts in the Lord [ e ] will be saved.
There will be survivors on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem,
just as the Lord said.
Yes, those left alive will be the ones
the Lord has called.
2 Blow ye the trumpet in Zion, and sound an alarm in my holy mountain: let all the inhabitants of the land tremble: for the day of the Lord cometh, for it is nigh at hand;
2 A day of darkness and of gloominess, a day of clouds and of thick darkness, as the morning spread upon the mountains: a great people and a strong; there hath not been ever the like, neither shall be any more after it, even to the years of many generations.
3 A fire devoureth before them; and behind them a flame burneth: the land is as the garden of Eden before them, and behind them a desolate wilderness; yea, and nothing shall escape them.
4 The appearance of them is as the appearance of horses; and as horsemen, so shall they run.
5 Like the noise of chariots on the tops of mountains shall they leap, like the noise of a flame of fire that devoureth the stubble, as a strong people set in battle array.
6 Before their face the people shall be much pained: all faces shall gather blackness.
7 They shall run like mighty men; they shall climb the wall like men of war; and they shall march every one on his ways, and they shall not break their ranks:
8 Neither shall one thrust another; they shall walk every one in his path: and when they fall upon the sword, they shall not be wounded.
9 They shall run to and fro in the city; they shall run upon the wall, they shall climb up upon the houses; they shall enter in at the windows like a thief.
10 The earth shall quake before them; the heavens shall tremble: the sun and the moon shall be dark, and the stars shall withdraw their shining:
11 And the Lord shall utter his voice before his army: for his camp is very great: for he is strong that executeth his word: for the day of the Lord is great and very terrible; and who can abide it?
12 Therefore also now, saith the Lord , turn ye even to me with all your heart, and with fasting, and with weeping, and with mourning:
13 And rend your heart, and not your garments, and turn unto the Lord your God: for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repenteth him of the evil.
14 Who knoweth if he will return and repent, and leave a blessing behind him; even a meat offering and a drink offering unto the Lord your God?
15 Blow the trumpet in Zion, sanctify a fast, call a solemn assembly:
16 Gather the people, sanctify the congregation, assemble the elders, gather the children, and those that suck the breasts: let the bridegroom go forth of his chamber, and the bride out of her closet.
17 Let the priests, the ministers of the Lord , weep between the porch and the altar, and let them say, Spare thy people, O Lord , and give not thine heritage to reproach, that the heathen should rule over them: wherefore should they say among the people, Where is their God?
18 Then will the Lord be jealous for his land, and pity his people.
19 Yea, the Lord will answer and say unto his people, Behold, I will send you corn, and wine, and oil, and ye shall be satisfied therewith: and I will no more make you a reproach among the heathen:
20 But I will remove far off from you the northern army, and will drive him into a land barren and desolate, with his face toward the east sea, and his hinder part toward the utmost sea, and his stink shall come up, and his ill savour shall come up, because he hath done great things.
21 Fear not, O land; be glad and rejoice: for the Lord will do great things.
22 Be not afraid, ye beasts of the field: for the pastures of the wilderness do spring, for the tree beareth her fruit, the fig tree and the vine do yield their strength.
23 Be glad then, ye children of Zion, and rejoice in the Lord your God: for he hath given you the former rain moderately, and he will cause to come down for you the rain, the former rain, and the latter rain in the first month.
24 And the floors shall be full of wheat, and the vats shall overflow with wine and oil.
25 And I will restore to you the years that the locust hath eaten, the cankerworm, and the caterpiller, and the palmerworm, my great army which I sent among you.
26 And ye shall eat in plenty, and be satisfied, and praise the name of the Lord your God, that hath dealt wondrously with you: and my people shall never be ashamed.
27 And ye shall know that I am in the midst of Israel, and that I am the Lord your God, and none else: and my people shall never be ashamed.
28 And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions:
29 And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my spirit.
30 And I will shew wonders in the heavens and in the earth, blood, and fire, and pillars of smoke.
31 The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and terrible day of the Lord come.
32 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be delivered: for in mount Zion and in Jerusalem shall be deliverance, as the Lord hath said, and in the remnant whom the Lord shall call.
2 ( A ) Blow a trumpet in Zion,
And sound an alarm on My holy mountain!
Let all the inhabitants of the land tremble,
For the ( B ) day of the Lord is coming;
Indeed, it is near,
2 A day of ( C ) darkness and gloom,
A day of clouds and thick darkness.
As dawn is spread over the mountains,
So there is a ( D ) great and mighty people;
There has ( E ) never been anything like it,
Nor will there be again after it
To the years of many generations.
3 A ( F ) fire consumes before them,
And behind them a flame devours.
The land is ( G ) like the Garden of Eden before them,
But a ( H ) desolate wilderness behind them,
And nothing at all escapes them.
4 Their ( I ) appearance is like the appearance of horses;
And like war horses, so they run.
5 [ a ] With a ( J ) noise as of chariots
They leap about on the tops of the mountains,
Like the [ b ] crackling of a ( K ) flame of fire consuming the stubble,
Like a mighty people drawn up for battle.
6 Before them the people are in ( L ) anguish;
All ( M ) faces [ c ] turn pale.
7 They run like warriors,
They climb the wall like soldiers;
And each of them ( N ) marches [ d ] in line,
Nor do they lose their way.
8 They do not crowd each other,
Every warrior of them marches in his path;
When they [ e ] burst through the [ f ] defenses,
They do not break ranks.
9 They storm the city,
They run on the wall;
They climb into the ( O ) houses,
They ( P ) enter through the windows like a thief.
10 Before them the earth ( Q ) quakes,
The heavens tremble,
The ( R ) sun and the moon become dark,
And the stars lose their brightness.
11 The Lord ( S ) utters His voice before ( T ) His army;
His camp is indeed very great,
For ( U ) mighty is one who carries out His word.
The ( V ) day of the Lord is indeed great and very awesome,
And ( W ) who can endure it?
12 “Yet even now,” declares the Lord ,
“ ( X ) Return to Me with all your heart,
And with ( Y ) fasting, weeping, and mourning;
13 And ( Z ) tear your heart and not merely ( AA ) your garments.”
Now return to the Lord your God,
For He is ( AB ) gracious and compassionate,
Slow to anger, abounding in mercy
And ( AC ) relenting of catastrophe.
14 Who knows, ( AD ) He might turn and relent,
And leave a ( AE ) blessing behind Him,
Resulting in ( AF ) a grain offering and a drink offering
For the Lord your God.
15 ( AG ) Blow a trumpet in Zion,
( AH ) Consecrate a fast, proclaim a solemn assembly,
16 Gather the people, ( AI ) sanctify the congregation,
Assemble the elders,
Gather the children and the nursing infants.
Have the ( AJ ) groom come out of his room
And the bride out of her bridal chamber.
17 Let the priests, the Lord ’ s ministers,
Weep ( AK ) between the porch and the altar,
And let them say, “ [ g ] ( AL ) Spare Your people, Lord ,
And do not make Your inheritance a ( AM ) disgrace,
With the nations jeering at them.
Why should those among the peoples say,
‘ ( AN ) Where is their God?’”
18 Then the Lord [ h ] will be ( AO ) zealous for His land,
And [ i ] will have ( AP ) compassion for His people.
19 The Lord [ j ] will answer and say to His people,
“Behold, I am going to ( AQ ) send you grain, new wine, and oil,
And you will be satisfied in full with [ k ] them;
And I will ( AR ) never again make you a disgrace among the nations.
20 But I will remove the ( AS ) northern army far from you,
And I will drive it into a dry and desolate land,
Its advance guard into the ( AT ) eastern sea,
And its rear guard into the ( AU ) western sea.
And its ( AV ) stench will ascend and its odor of decay will come up,
Because it has done great things.”
21 ( AW ) Do not fear, land; shout for joy and rejoice,
For the Lord has done ( AX ) great things.
22 Do not fear, animals of the field,
For the ( AY ) pastures of the wilderness have turned green,
For the tree has produced its fruit,
The fig tree and the vine have yielded [ l ] in full.
23 So shout for joy, you ( AZ ) sons of Zion,
And ( BA ) rejoice in the Lord your God;
For He has ( BB ) given you [ m ] the early rain for your vindication.
And He has brought down for you the rain,
The [ n ] early and [ o ] ( BC ) latter rain [ p ] as before.
24 The threshing floors will be full of grain,
And the vats will ( BD ) overflow with the new wine and oil.
25 “Then I will compensate you for the years
That the [ q ] swarming ( BE ) locust has eaten,
The creeping locust, the stripping locust, and the gnawing locust—
My great army which I sent among you.
26 You will have plenty to ( BF ) eat and be satisfied,
And you will ( BG ) praise the name of the Lord your God,
Who has ( BH ) dealt wondrously with you;
Then My people will ( BI ) never be put to shame.
27 So you will ( BJ ) know that I am in the midst of Israel,
And that I am the Lord your God
And there is ( BK ) no other;
And My people will never be ( BL ) put to shame.
28 “ [ r ] ( BM ) It will come about after this
That I will ( BN ) pour out My Spirit on all [ s ] ( BO ) mankind;
And your sons and your daughters will prophesy,
Your old men will have dreams,
Your young men will see visions.
29 And even on the ( BP ) male and female servants
I will pour out My Spirit in those days.
30 I will [ t ] ( BQ ) display wonders in the sky and on the earth,
Blood, fire, and columns of smoke.
31 The ( BR ) sun will be turned into darkness,
And the moon into blood,
Before the ( BS ) great and awesome day of the Lord comes.
32 And it will come about that ( BT ) everyone who calls on the name of the Lord
Will [ u ] be saved;
For ( BU ) on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem
There will be those who ( BV ) escape,
Just as the Lord has said,
Even among the ( BW ) survivors whom the Lord calls.
Let all who live in the land tremble,
for the day of the Lord ( D ) is coming.
It is close at hand ( E ) —
2 a day of darkness ( F ) and gloom, ( G )
a day of clouds ( H ) and blackness. ( I )
Like dawn spreading across the mountains
a large and mighty army ( J ) comes,
such as never was in ancient times ( K )
nor ever will be in ages to come.
3 Before them fire ( L ) devours,
behind them a flame blazes.
Before them the land is like the garden of Eden, ( M )
behind them, a desert waste ( N ) —
nothing escapes them.
4 They have the appearance of horses; ( O )
they gallop along like cavalry.
5 With a noise like that of chariots ( P )
they leap over the mountaintops,
like a crackling fire ( Q ) consuming stubble,
like a mighty army drawn up for battle.
6 At the sight of them, nations are in anguish; ( R )
every face turns pale. ( S )
7 They charge like warriors; ( T )
they scale walls like soldiers.
They all march in line, ( U )
not swerving ( V ) from their course.
8 They do not jostle each other;
each marches straight ahead.
They plunge through defenses
without breaking ranks.
9 They rush upon the city;
they run along the wall.
They climb into the houses; ( W )
like thieves they enter through the windows. ( X )
10 Before them the earth shakes, ( Y )
the heavens tremble, ( Z )
the sun and moon are darkened, ( AA )
and the stars no longer shine. ( AB )
11 The Lord ( AC ) thunders ( AD )
at the head of his army; ( AE )
his forces are beyond number,
and mighty is the army that obeys his command.
The day of the Lord is great; ( AF )
it is dreadful.
Who can endure it? ( AG )
12 “Even now,” declares the Lord ,
“return ( AH ) to me with all your heart, ( AI )
with fasting and weeping and mourning.”
13 Rend your heart ( AJ )
and not your garments. ( AK )
Return ( AL ) to the Lord your God,
for he is gracious and compassionate, ( AM )
slow to anger and abounding in love, ( AN )
and he relents from sending calamity. ( AO )
14 Who knows? He may turn ( AP ) and relent ( AQ )
and leave behind a blessing ( AR ) —
grain offerings and drink offerings ( AS )
for the Lord your God.
15 Blow the trumpet ( AT ) in Zion, ( AU )
declare a holy fast, ( AV )
call a sacred assembly. ( AW )
16 Gather the people,
consecrate ( AX ) the assembly;
bring together the elders, ( AY )
gather the children,
those nursing at the breast.
Let the bridegroom ( AZ ) leave his room
and the bride her chamber.
17 Let the priests, who minister ( BA ) before the Lord ,
weep ( BB ) between the portico and the altar. ( BC )
Let them say, “Spare your people, Lord .
Do not make your inheritance an object of scorn, ( BD )
a byword ( BE ) among the nations.
Why should they say among the peoples,
‘Where is their God? ( BF ) ’”
19 The Lord replied [ a ] to them:
“I am sending you grain, new wine ( BI ) and olive oil, ( BJ )
enough to satisfy you fully; ( BK )
never again will I make you
an object of scorn ( BL ) to the nations.
20 “I will drive the northern horde ( BM ) far from you,
pushing it into a parched and barren land;
its eastern ranks will drown in the Dead Sea
and its western ranks in the Mediterranean Sea.
And its stench ( BN ) will go up;
its smell will rise.”
Surely he has done great things!
21 Do not be afraid, ( BO ) land of Judah;
be glad and rejoice. ( BP )
Surely the Lord has done great things! ( BQ )
22 Do not be afraid, you wild animals,
for the pastures in the wilderness are becoming green. ( BR )
The trees are bearing their fruit;
the fig tree ( BS ) and the vine ( BT ) yield their riches. ( BU )
23 Be glad, people of Zion,
rejoice ( BV ) in the Lord your God,
for he has given you the autumn rains
because he is faithful. ( BW )
He sends you abundant showers, ( BX )
both autumn ( BY ) and spring rains, ( BZ ) as before.
24 The threshing floors will be filled with grain;
the vats will overflow ( CA ) with new wine ( CB ) and oil.
25 “I will repay you for the years the locusts ( CC ) have eaten ( CD ) —
the great locust and the young locust,
the other locusts and the locust swarm [ b ] —
my great army ( CE ) that I sent among you.
26 You will have plenty to eat, until you are full, ( CF )
and you will praise ( CG ) the name of the Lord your God,
who has worked wonders ( CH ) for you;
never again will my people be shamed. ( CI )
27 Then you will know ( CJ ) that I am in Israel,
that I am the Lord ( CK ) your God,
and that there is no other;
never again will my people be shamed. ( CL )
28 “And afterward,
I will pour out my Spirit ( CM ) on all people. ( CN )
Your sons and daughters will prophesy, ( CO )
your old men will dream dreams, ( CP )
your young men will see visions.
29 Even on my servants, ( CQ ) both men and women,
I will pour out my Spirit in those days. ( CR )
30 I will show wonders in the heavens ( CS )
and on the earth, ( CT )
blood and fire and billows of smoke.
31 The sun will be turned to darkness ( CU )
and the moon to blood
before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord . ( CV )
32 And everyone who calls
on the name of the Lord ( CW ) will be saved; ( CX )
for on Mount Zion ( CY ) and in Jerusalem
there will be deliverance, ( CZ )
as the Lord has said,
even among the survivors ( DA )
whom the Lord calls. [ c ] ( DB )
