Eliphaz continues to speak to Job

5 ‘Shout for help, Job! But no one will answer you.
None of the angels will come to help you.
2 Foolish people may be angry and jealous.
That is what kills them.
3 I have seen fools who seemed to be successful.
But suddenly a curse destroyed their homes.
4 Their children are never truly safe.
The judge says that they are guilty,
and nobody saves them from punishment.
5 Hungry people take their crops to eat.
They even take them from among the weeds.
Thirsty people take the fool's money for themselves.
6 Problems do not grow like plants in our fields.
Trouble does not come up from the ground.
7 But trouble comes to everyone, as soon as they are born.
It is as certain as smoke that rises from a fire.

8 I suggest that you ask God to help you.
You should tell him about your problems.
9 He does great things that nobody can understand.
He does more miracles than anyone can count.
10 He gives rain for the earth.
He sends water for the fields.
11 He gives honour to humble people.
When people are suffering, he puts them in a safe place.
12 He stops the ideas of clever people.
They cannot do what they want to do.
13 When wise people try to do clever things,
he causes those things to give them trouble.
He quickly stops their clever ideas.
14 In the middle of the day, it becomes dark for those people.
At midday, they see no better than blind people.
15 He saves poor people when wicked people attack them.
He rescues weak people from the power of strong people.
16 So poor people can hope for justice.
Wicked people have to be quiet.
17 If Almighty God warns you to do what is right,
he has blessed you.
So do not be upset when he decides to do that.
18 He may cause you to have pain,
but he will make you well again.
He may hurt you,
but he will also give you health.
19 If trouble comes to you six times, he will rescue you.
No bad thing will hurt you, as often as it happens.
20 If there is a time of famine,
he will keep you alive.
He will protect you from death in a time of war.
21 If people insult you, he will take care of you.
When people attack you, you will not be afraid.
22 In times of danger and famine, you will be brave.
You will not be afraid of wild animals.
23 The stones in your fields will not give you trouble.
The wild animals will not attack you.
24 You will know that your home is strong and safe.
When you check all your land,
you will see that all your animals are safe.
25 You will know that your children will be very many.
You will have as many descendants as the grass that grows in the ground.
26 You will not die until you are old.
You will grow with strength until you die,
like crops that grow until the time of harvest.
27 We have thought carefully about these things.
We know that they are true.
So listen to what we say.
Accept it and it will be good for you.’

5 “Job, call out if you want, and see if anyone answers!
But to which of the angels will you turn?
2 A fool’s anger will kill him.
His jealousy will destroy him.
3 I saw a fool who thought he was safe,
but suddenly he died. [ a ]
4 There was no one to help his children.
No one defended them in court.
5 Hungry people ate all his crops,
even the grain growing among the thorns,
and greedy people took all he had.
6 Bad times don’t come up from the dirt.
Trouble does not grow from the ground.
7 But people are born to have trouble,
as surely as sparks rise from a fire.
8 If I were you, I would turn to God
and tell him about my problems.
9 People cannot understand the wonderful things God does.
His miracles are too many to count.
10 He sends rain all over the earth
and waters the fields.
11 He raises up the humble
and makes sad people happy.
12 He spoils the plans of even the smartest people
so that they will not succeed.
13 He catches those who think they are wise in their own clever traps
and brings to an end their evil plans.
14 Daylight will be like darkness for them.
Even at noon they will have to feel their way as in the dark.
15 God saves the poor from the hurtful words of the wicked.
He saves them from those who are powerful.
16 So the poor have hope;
God shuts the mouths of those who would cause them harm.

17 “You are fortunate when God corrects you.
So don’t complain when God All-Powerful punishes you.
18 God might injure you, but he will bandage those wounds.
He might hurt you, but his hands also heal.
19 He will save you again and again.
No evil will harm you. [ b ]
20 God will save you from death
when there is famine.
He will protect you from the sword
when there is war.
21 People might say bad things about you with their sharp tongues.
But God will protect you.
You will not be afraid when bad things happen!
22 You will laugh at destruction and famine.
You will not be afraid of wild animals!
23 It is as if you have a peace treaty
with the wild animals and the rocks in the field.
24 You will live in peace because your tent is safe.
You will count your property and find nothing missing.
25 You will have many children.
They will be as many as the blades of grass on the earth.
26 You will be like the wheat that grows until harvest time.
Yes, you will live to a ripe old age.

27 “We have studied this and know it is true.
So listen to us, and learn for yourself.”

5 Call now, if there be any that will answer thee; and to which of the saints wilt thou turn?

2 For wrath killeth the foolish man, and envy slayeth the silly one.

3 I have seen the foolish taking root: but suddenly I cursed his habitation.

4 His children are far from safety, and they are crushed in the gate, neither is there any to deliver them.

5 Whose harvest the hungry eateth up, and taketh it even out of the thorns, and the robber swalloweth up their substance.

6 Although affliction cometh not forth of the dust, neither doth trouble spring out of the ground;

7 Yet man is born unto trouble, as the sparks fly upward.

8 I would seek unto God, and unto God would I commit my cause:

9 Which doeth great things and unsearchable; marvellous things without number:

10 Who giveth rain upon the earth, and sendeth waters upon the fields:

11 To set up on high those that be low; that those which mourn may be exalted to safety.

12 He disappointeth the devices of the crafty, so that their hands cannot perform their enterprise.

13 He taketh the wise in their own craftiness: and the counsel of the froward is carried headlong.

14 They meet with darkness in the day time, and grope in the noonday as in the night.

15 But he saveth the poor from the sword, from their mouth, and from the hand of the mighty.

16 So the poor hath hope, and iniquity stoppeth her mouth.

17 Behold, happy is the man whom God correcteth: therefore despise not thou the chastening of the Almighty:

18 For he maketh sore, and bindeth up: he woundeth, and his hands make whole.

19 He shall deliver thee in six troubles: yea, in seven there shall no evil touch thee.

20 In famine he shall redeem thee from death: and in war from the power of the sword.

21 Thou shalt be hid from the scourge of the tongue: neither shalt thou be afraid of destruction when it cometh.

22 At destruction and famine thou shalt laugh: neither shalt thou be afraid of the beasts of the earth.

23 For thou shalt be in league with the stones of the field: and the beasts of the field shall be at peace with thee.

24 And thou shalt know that thy tabernacle shall be in peace; and thou shalt visit thy habitation, and shalt not sin.

25 Thou shalt know also that thy seed shall be great, and thine offspring as the grass of the earth.

26 Thou shalt come to thy grave in a full age, like as a shock of corn cometh in in his season.

27 Lo this, we have searched it, so it is; hear it, and know thou it for thy good.

God Is Just

5 “Call now, is there anyone who will answer you?
And to which of the ( A ) holy ones will you turn?
2 For ( B ) irritation kills the fool,
And jealousy brings death to the simple.
3 I have seen the ( C ) fool taking root,
And I ( D ) cursed his home immediately.
4 His ( E ) sons are far from safety,
They are also [ a ] oppressed at the gate,
And there is no one to save them .
5 [ b ] The hungry devour his harvest
And take it to a place of thorns,
And the [ c ] ( F ) schemer is eager for their wealth.
6 For ( G ) disaster does not come from the dust,
Nor does trouble sprout from the ground,
7 For ( H ) man is born for trouble,
As sparks fly upward.

8 “But as for me, I would ( I ) seek God,
And I would make my plea before God,
9 Who ( J ) does great and unsearchable things,
[ d ] Wonders without number.
10 He ( K ) gives rain on the earth,
And sends water on the fields,
11 So that ( L ) He sets on high those who are lowly,
And those who mourn are lifted to safety.
12 He ( M ) frustrates the schemes of the shrewd,
So that their hands cannot attain success.
13 He ( N ) captures the wise by their own cleverness,
And the advice of the cunning is quickly thwarted.
14 By day they ( O ) meet with darkness,
And grope at noon as in the night.
15 But He saves from ( P ) the sword of their mouth,
And ( Q ) the poor from the hand of the strong.
16 So the helpless has hope,
And ( R ) injustice has shut its mouth.

17 “Behold, ( S ) happy is the person whom God disciplines,
So do not reject the ( T ) discipline of [ e ] the Almighty.
18 For ( U ) He inflicts pain, and [ f ] gives relief;
He wounds, but His hands also heal.
19 In six troubles ( V ) He will save you;
Even in seven, ( W ) evil will not touch you.
20 In ( X ) famine He will redeem you from death,
And ( Y ) in war, from the power of the sword.
21 You will be ( Z ) hidden [ g ] from the scourge of the tongue,
( AA ) And you will not be afraid of violence when it comes.
22 You will ( AB ) laugh at violence and hunger,
( AC ) And you will not be afraid of [ h ] wild animals.
23 For you will be in league with the stones of the field,
And ( AD ) the animals of the field will be at peace with you.
24 You will know that your ( AE ) tent is secure,
For you will visit your home and [ i ] have nothing missing.
25 You will also know that your [ j ] ( AF ) descendants will be many,
And ( AG ) your offspring as the grass of the earth.
26 You will ( AH ) come to the grave at a ripe age,
Like the stacking of grain in its season.
27 Behold this; we have investigated it, and so it is.
Hear it, and know for yourself.”

8 “But if I were you, I would appeal to God;
I would lay my cause before him. ( P )
9 He performs wonders ( Q ) that cannot be fathomed, ( R )
miracles that cannot be counted. ( S )
10 He provides rain for the earth; ( T )
he sends water on the countryside. ( U )
11 The lowly he sets on high, ( V )
and those who mourn ( W ) are lifted ( X ) to safety.
12 He thwarts the plans ( Y ) of the crafty,
so that their hands achieve no success. ( Z )
13 He catches the wise ( AA ) in their craftiness, ( AB )
and the schemes of the wily are swept away. ( AC )
14 Darkness ( AD ) comes upon them in the daytime;
at noon they grope as in the night. ( AE )
15 He saves the needy ( AF ) from the sword in their mouth;
he saves them from the clutches of the powerful. ( AG )
16 So the poor ( AH ) have hope,
and injustice shuts its mouth. ( AI )

17 “Blessed is the one whom God corrects; ( AJ )
so do not despise the discipline ( AK ) of the Almighty. [ a ] ( AL )
18 For he wounds, but he also binds up; ( AM )
he injures, but his hands also heal. ( AN )
19 From six calamities he will rescue ( AO ) you;
in seven no harm will touch you. ( AP )
20 In famine ( AQ ) he will deliver you from death,
and in battle from the stroke of the sword. ( AR )
21 You will be protected from the lash of the tongue, ( AS )
and need not fear ( AT ) when destruction comes. ( AU )
22 You will laugh ( AV ) at destruction and famine, ( AW )
and need not fear the wild animals. ( AX )
23 For you will have a covenant ( AY ) with the stones ( AZ ) of the field,
and the wild animals will be at peace with you. ( BA )
24 You will know that your tent is secure; ( BB )
you will take stock of your property and find nothing missing. ( BC )
25 You will know that your children will be many, ( BD )
and your descendants like the grass of the earth. ( BE )
26 You will come to the grave in full vigor, ( BF )
like sheaves gathered in season. ( BG )

27 “We have examined this, and it is true.
So hear it ( BH ) and apply it to yourself.” ( BI )
