Job continues to speak [ a ]

31 ‘I have made a promise with myself
about how I look at young women.
I will never think that I want to have sex with them.
2 Anyone who does that should expect God to punish them.
Almighty God in heaven above punishes people who do wrong things.
3 He sends trouble to people who do wicked things.
He punishes those people who do evil things.
4 God sees all the things that I do.
He carefully watches how I live my life.
5 He must know that I am an honest man.
I have never tried to deceive people.
6 So he should judge me in a fair way.
He should realize that I am not guilty.
7 God seems to think that I have not lived in the right way.
He may think that I have wanted bad things
when they looked nice to me.
Or perhaps I have done something else that was wrong.
8 If am really guilty of these things,
someone else should eat the crops that I have planted.
They should destroy all the crops in my fields.
9 I have not wanted to love any woman
except my wife.
I have not hidden outside my friend's house
to wait for his wife to be alone.
10 If I had done those things,
my wife should prepare food for another man.
It would be right for other men to have sex with her.
11 I would not have been faithful to my wife.
I would have done a wicked thing
and I would deserve punishment.
12 If I loved another woman,
it would be like a dangerous fire.
It would destroy everything that I have worked hard to get.

13 When my servants complain against me,
I have always been fair to them.
14 If I had been cruel to them,
God would be right to punish me.
When God judges me,
I would have no answer to excuse myself.
15 God made me and he made my servants too.
God brought us all to birth.
16 I have never refused to help people who are poor.
I have always helped widows
to hope for good things.
17 I have never kept all my food for myself.
I have always shared it with children who have no family.
18 Since I was a young man,
I have helped those children like a father.
All my life I have helped widows too.
19 I have seen people without enough clothes to keep them warm,
or without a coat to wear.
20 Then I would give them clothes.
The wool from my sheep would keep them warm.
And they all thanked me.
21 I have not turned against children who have no family,
even when the city judges agreed with me.
22 God should punish me if these things are not true.
I would accept the punishment that I deserve.

23 I was afraid of the trouble that God might bring to me.
So I could not do these bad things,
because God is so great and powerful.
24 I have not trusted in money or in gold.
I have never thought that they would make me strong.
25 When I was very rich,
I was not proud about it.
I did not think that I had worked hard to deserve it.
26 I have looked at the sun when it shines brightly.
And I have seen the moon when it is very beautiful.
27 But I have never wanted to worship them
or to give them honour.
28 If I had done that,
I would not have been faithful to God in heaven.
I would have deserved punishment for that sin.
29 I do not laugh at my enemies
when they suffer.
If my enemy has troubles,
it does not make me happy.
30 I have not cursed my enemies,
to ask God to kill them.
That would have caused a sin to come from my mouth!
31 None of the people who work in my house have ever said,
“Job has not welcomed strangers into his house.
He has not shared his food with them.”
32 Travellers may come to sleep in my house.
They do not have to sleep outside in the street.
33 I do not try to hide my sins,
as some people do.
34 I am not afraid of what people think about me.
Even if a great crowd of people speak against me,
I do not stay inside my house and keep quiet.

35 I want someone to listen to me!
All the things that I say are true.
Almighty God should give me an answer!
I need to know what I have done that is wrong.
He should write down the reason why I am guilty!
36 Then I would show that paper clearly on my shoulders.
I would be proud to wear it like a crown on my head.
37 I would explain to God everything that I have done.
I would stand in front of him without fear, like a ruler.

38 I have not grown crops on land that does not belong to me.
The land itself would accuse me if that were true.
39 I have always paid for the food
that other people have worked to grow.
I have never cheated the farmers
so that they suffered.
40 If I have ever done any of those things,
then may thorn bushes grow in my fields instead of wheat.
May weeds grow in my fields instead of barley.’

That is the end of the things that Job said.

Footnotes

  1. 31:1 In chapter 31, Job says that he has always lived the right way. He says that he has always spoken true words. He says that he has always been fair. He has helped other people who have been in trouble. He is sure that God knows this. He wants to know why God is punishing him.

31 “I made an agreement with my eyes
not to look at a young woman in a way that would make me want her.
2 What does God above have for us?
How does God All-Powerful repay people from his home high in heaven? [ a ]
3 He sends trouble to the wicked
and disaster to those who do wrong.
4 God is the one who knows what I do
and sees every step I take.

5 “I have not lied to anyone.
I never tried to cheat people.
6 If God would use accurate scales, [ b ]
he would know that I am innocent.
7 If I ever stepped off the right path,
if my eyes led my heart to do evil,
or if my hands are dirty with sin,
8 then let others eat what I planted.
Let my crops be pulled up by the roots.

9 “If I have desired another woman
or waited at my neighbor’s door to sin with his wife,
10 then let my wife serve someone else,
and let other men sleep with her.
11 To do such a thing would be shameful,
a sin that must be punished.
12 Such sin is like a fire that burns until it destroys everything.
It would completely ruin my life’s work.

13 “If I refused to be fair to my slaves
when they had a complaint against me,
14 then what will I do when I must face God?
What will I say when he asks me to explain what I did?
15 The one who made me in my mother’s womb also made them.
God shaped us all inside our mothers.

16 “I have never refused to help the poor.
I always gave widows what they needed.
17 I have never been selfish with my food.
I shared what I had with orphans.
18 All my life I have been like a father to orphans
and have taken care of widows.
19 Whenever I found people suffering because they didn’t have clothes
or saw a poor man with no coat,
20 I always gave them something to wear.
I used the wool from my own sheep to make them warm.
And they thanked me with all their heart.
21 I never threatened an orphan,
even when I knew I had support in court. [ c ]
22 If I ever did that, may my arm be pulled from its socket
and fall from my shoulder!
23 But I didn’t do any of these bad things.
I fear God’s punishment too much.
His majesty scares me. [ d ]

24 “I have never trusted in riches.
I never said even to pure gold, ‘You are my hope.’
25 I have been wealthy,
but that didn’t make me proud.
I earned a lot of money,
but that is not what made me happy.
26 I have never worshiped the bright sun
or the beautiful moon.
27 I was never foolish enough
to worship the sun and the moon.
28 This is also a sin that must be punished.
If I had worshiped them, I would have been unfaithful to God All-Powerful.

29 “I have never been happy
when my enemies were destroyed.
I have never laughed at my enemies
when bad things happened to them.
30 I have never let my mouth sin by cursing my enemies
and wishing for them to die.
31 The people in my house know that
I have never let anyone go hungry.
32 I always invited strangers into my home
so that they would not have to sleep in the streets.
33 I have not tried to hide my sins as some people do.
I have never hidden my guilt.
34 I was never so afraid of what people might say or of making enemies
that I kept my sins secret and avoided going out.

35 “How I wish someone would listen to me!
I will sign my name to all I have said.
Now let God All-Powerful answer me.
Let him make a list of what he thinks I did wrong.
36 I would wear it around my neck.
I would put it on my head like a crown.
37 Then I could explain everything I have done.
I could come to God with my head held high like a prince.

38 “I did not use my land in a wrong way.
I never caused it to suffer.
39 I always paid the workers for the food I got from the land.
I never let any of them starve.
40 If I ever did any of these bad things,
let thorns and weeds grow in my fields instead of wheat and barley!”

Job’s words are finished.

Footnotes

  1. Job 31:2 Or possibly, “I made an agreement with my eyes not to look with desire at the Virgin or the sacred things that belong to God All-Powerful.” Here, “the Virgin” refers to a goddess worshiped by the Canaanites.
  2. Job 31:6 accurate scales Literally, “scales of righteousness.” As a wordplay, this could mean either “accurate scales” or “scales that show a person is good.”
  3. Job 31:21 Or “I never shook my fist at an orphan who was at the gate asking for help.”
  4. Job 31:23 His majesty … me Or “I could not stand before his majesty.”

31 I made a covenant with mine eyes; why then should I think upon a maid?

2 For what portion of God is there from above? and what inheritance of the Almighty from on high?

3 Is not destruction to the wicked? and a strange punishment to the workers of iniquity?

4 Doth not he see my ways, and count all my steps?

5 If I have walked with vanity, or if my foot hath hasted to deceit;

6 Let me be weighed in an even balance that God may know mine integrity.

7 If my step hath turned out of the way, and mine heart walked after mine eyes, and if any blot hath cleaved to mine hands;

8 Then let me sow, and let another eat; yea, let my offspring be rooted out.

9 If mine heart have been deceived by a woman, or if I have laid wait at my neighbour's door;

10 Then let my wife grind unto another, and let others bow down upon her.

11 For this is an heinous crime; yea, it is an iniquity to be punished by the judges.

12 For it is a fire that consumeth to destruction, and would root out all mine increase.

13 If I did despise the cause of my manservant or of my maidservant, when they contended with me;

14 What then shall I do when God riseth up? and when he visiteth, what shall I answer him?

15 Did not he that made me in the womb make him? and did not one fashion us in the womb?

16 If I have withheld the poor from their desire, or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail;

17 Or have eaten my morsel myself alone, and the fatherless hath not eaten thereof;

18 (For from my youth he was brought up with me, as with a father, and I have guided her from my mother's womb;)

19 If I have seen any perish for want of clothing, or any poor without covering;

20 If his loins have not blessed me, and if he were not warmed with the fleece of my sheep;

21 If I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless, when I saw my help in the gate:

22 Then let mine arm fall from my shoulder blade, and mine arm be broken from the bone.

23 For destruction from God was a terror to me, and by reason of his highness I could not endure.

24 If I have made gold my hope, or have said to the fine gold, Thou art my confidence;

25 If I rejoice because my wealth was great, and because mine hand had gotten much;

26 If I beheld the sun when it shined, or the moon walking in brightness;

27 And my heart hath been secretly enticed, or my mouth hath kissed my hand:

28 This also were an iniquity to be punished by the judge: for I should have denied the God that is above.

29 If I rejoice at the destruction of him that hated me, or lifted up myself when evil found him:

30 Neither have I suffered my mouth to sin by wishing a curse to his soul.

31 If the men of my tabernacle said not, Oh that we had of his flesh! we cannot be satisfied.

32 The stranger did not lodge in the street: but I opened my doors to the traveller.

33 If I covered my transgressions as Adam, by hiding mine iniquity in my bosom:

34 Did I fear a great multitude, or did the contempt of families terrify me, that I kept silence, and went not out of the door?

35 Oh that one would hear me! behold, my desire is, that the Almighty would answer me, and that mine adversary had written a book.

36 Surely I would take it upon my shoulder, and bind it as a crown to me.

37 I would declare unto him the number of my steps; as a prince would I go near unto him.

38 If my land cry against me, or that the furrows likewise thereof complain;

39 If I have eaten the fruits thereof without money, or have caused the owners thereof to lose their life:

40 Let thistles grow instead of wheat, and cockle instead of barley. The words of Job are ended.

Job Asserts His Integrity

31 “I have made a covenant with my ( A ) eyes;
How then could I look at a virgin?
2 And what is ( B ) the portion of God from above,
Or the inheritance of the Almighty from on high?
3 Is it not ( C ) disaster to the criminal,
And misfortune to ( D ) those who practice injustice?
4 Does He not ( E ) see my ways,
And ( F ) count all my steps?

5 “If I have ( G ) walked with deception,
And my foot has hurried after deceit,
6 Let Him ( H ) weigh me with [ a ] accurate scales,
And let God know ( I ) my integrity.
7 If my step has ( J ) turned from the way,
Or my heart [ b ] followed my eyes,
Or if any ( K ) spot has stuck to my hands,
8 Let me ( L ) sow and another eat,
And let my [ c ] ( M ) crops be uprooted.

9 “If my heart has been ( N ) enticed by a woman,
Or I have lurked at my neighbor’s doorway,
10 May my wife ( O ) grind grain for another,
And let ( P ) others [ d ] kneel down over her.
11 For that would be a ( Q ) lustful crime;
Moreover, it would be ( R ) wrongdoing punishable by judges.
12 For it would be ( S ) fire that consumes to [ e ] ( T ) Abaddon,
And would ( U ) uproot all my [ f ] increase.

13 “If I have ( V ) rejected the claim of my male or female slaves
When they filed a complaint against me,
14 What then could I do when God arises?
And when He calls me to account, how am I to answer Him?
15 Did ( W ) He who made me in the womb not make him,
And the same one create us in the womb?

16 “If I have kept ( X ) the poor from their desire,
Or have caused the eyes of ( Y ) the widow to fail,
17 Or have ( Z ) eaten my morsel alone,
And ( AA ) the orphan has not [ g ] shared it
18 (But from my youth he grew up with me as with a father,
And from [ h ] my infancy I guided her),
19 If I have seen anyone perish ( AB ) for lack of clothing,
Or that ( AC ) the needy had no covering,
20 If his waist has not [ i ] thanked me,
And if he has not been warmed with the fleece of my sheep,
21 If I have lifted up my hand against ( AD ) the orphan,
Because I saw [ j ] I had support ( AE ) in the gate,
22 May my shoulder fall from its [ k ] socket,
And my ( AF ) arm be broken off [ l ] at the elbow.
23 For ( AG ) disaster from God is a terror to me,
And because of ( AH ) His majesty I can do nothing.

24 “If I have put my confidence in ( AI ) gold,
And called fine gold my trust,
25 If I have ( AJ ) gloated because my wealth was great,
And because my hand had obtained so much;
26 If I have ( AK ) looked at the [ m ] sun when it shone,
Or the moon going in splendor,
27 And my heart was secretly enticed,
And my hand [ n ] threw a kiss from my mouth,
28 That too would have been ( AL ) a guilty deed calling for [ o ] judgment,
For I would have ( AM ) denied God above.

29 “Have I ( AN ) rejoiced at the misfortune of my enemy,
Or become excited when evil found him?
30 [ p ] No, ( AO ) I have not [ q ] allowed my mouth to sin
By asking for his life in ( AP ) a curse.
31 Have the people of my tent not said,
‘Who can [ r ] find one who has not been ( AQ ) satisfied with his meat’?
32 The stranger has not spent the night outside,
For I have opened my doors to the [ s ] traveler.
33 Have I ( AR ) covered my wrongdoings like a man,
By hiding my guilt in my shirt pocket,
34 Because I ( AS ) feared the great multitude
And the contempt of families terrified me,
And I kept silent and did not go out of doors?
35 Oh that I had one to hear me!
Here is my [ t ] signature;
( AT ) Let the Almighty answer me!
And the indictment which my ( AU ) adversary has written,
36 I would certainly carry it on my shoulder,
I would tie it to myself like a garland.
37 I would declare to Him ( AV ) the number of my steps;
Like ( AW ) a prince, I would approach Him.

38 “If my ( AX ) land cries out against me,
And its furrows weep together;
39 If I have ( AY ) eaten its [ u ] fruit without money,
Or have ( AZ ) caused [ v ] its owners to lose their lives,
40 May the ( BA ) thorn-bush [ w ] grow instead of wheat,
And stinkweed instead of barley.”

The words of Job are ended.
