Satan attacks Job's health

2 Another time, the angels came again to meet with the Lord . Satan also came with them to meet the Lord . 2 The Lord said to Satan, ‘Where have you come from?’ Satan replied, ‘I have been travelling all over the earth. I have been watching the things that happen there.’

3 Then the Lord said to Satan, ‘You have seen Job, who is my servant. What do you think about him? There is no one on earth who is like him. He is a good and honest man. He is afraid to make me angry. He refuses to do evil things. Because of what you said, I allowed you to attack him. But he did not deserve that. He has continued to do what is right.’

4 Satan answered the Lord , ‘A man will always take care of his own body. He would do anything to save his own life. 5 So now cause Job to have great pain in his own body. Then he will certainly curse you very strongly.’

6 So the Lord said to Satan, ‘I agree to give you power over Job himself. But you must not cause his death.’

7 So Satan went away. He caused Job to have boils all over his body. They hurt him everywhere, from the bottom of his feet to the top of his head.

8 Job was very upset and he sat down among some ashes. He used a piece of a broken pot to remove the bad bits of skin.

9 His wife said to him, ‘You cannot continue to trust God! Instead, you should curse God and then die.’ 10 Job replied, ‘Do not talk like a fool! We take the good things that God gives us. So we should not be surprised if he sends us trouble as well.’

In all his trouble, Job never said any wrong things against God.

Job's friends come to help him

11 Three of Job's friends heard news about his trouble. One friend was called Eliphaz, who came from Teman. The second friend was called Bildad, who came from Shuah. The third friend was called Zophar, who came from Naamah. They came from their own homes to meet together. They wanted to show Job that they were sorry about his trouble. They went to visit him to comfort him.

12 When they could see Job from far away, they did not easily recognize him. They began to weep very loudly. They were so upset that they tore their clothes. They threw dust into the air and on their heads. 13 For a whole week, they sat on the ground near Job. They knew that his pain was very bad. So all that time, they did not say anything to him.

Satan Bothers Job Again

2 Then another day came for the angels [ a ] to meet with the Lord . Satan joined them for this meeting with the Lord . 2 The Lord said to Satan, “Where have you been?”

Satan answered the Lord , “I have been roaming around the earth, going from place to place.”

3 Then the Lord said to Satan, “Have you noticed my servant Job? There is no one on earth like him. He is a good, faithful man. He respects God and refuses to do evil. He is still faithful, even though you asked me to let you destroy, without reason, everything he has.”

4 Satan answered, “Skin for skin! [ b ] A man will give everything he has to protect himself. 5 I swear, if you attack his flesh and bones, he will curse you to your face!”

6 So the Lord said to Satan, “All right, Job is in your hands, but you are not allowed to kill him.”

7 So Satan left the meeting with the Lord and gave Job painful sores all over his body, from the bottom of his feet to the top of his head. 8 Job sat on the pile of ashes where he was mourning and used a piece of broken pottery to scrape his sores. 9 His wife said to him, “Are you still holding on to your faith? Why don’t you just curse God and die!”

10 Job answered, “You sound like one of those fools on the street corner! How can we accept all the good things that God gives us and not accept the problems?” So even after all that happened to Job, he did not sin. He did not accuse God of doing anything wrong.

Job’s Three Friends Come to See Him

11 Job’s three friends heard about all the bad things that happened to him, so Eliphaz came from Teman, Bildad from Shuah, and Zophar from Naamah. They met together and went to comfort Job and show him their sympathy. 12 But his friends didn’t even recognize him when they first saw him in the distance! They began to cry loudly. They tore their clothes and threw dirt in the air over their heads to show how sad they were. 13 Then they sat on the ground with Job for seven days and seven nights. They didn’t say a word, because they saw he was in so much pain.

Footnotes

  1. Job 2:1 angels Literally, “sons of God.”
  2. Job 2:4 Skin for skin This means a person will do anything to avoid pain.

2 Again there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord , and Satan came also among them to present himself before the Lord .

2 And the Lord said unto Satan, From whence comest thou? And Satan answered the Lord , and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.

3 And the Lord said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil? and still he holdeth fast his integrity, although thou movedst me against him, to destroy him without cause.

4 And Satan answered the Lord , and said, Skin for skin, yea, all that a man hath will he give for his life.

5 But put forth thine hand now, and touch his bone and his flesh, and he will curse thee to thy face.

6 And the Lord said unto Satan, Behold, he is in thine hand; but save his life.

7 So went Satan forth from the presence of the Lord , and smote Job with sore boils from the sole of his foot unto his crown.

8 And he took him a potsherd to scrape himself withal; and he sat down among the ashes.

9 Then said his wife unto him, Dost thou still retain thine integrity? curse God, and die.

10 But he said unto her, Thou speakest as one of the foolish women speaketh. What? shall we receive good at the hand of God, and shall we not receive evil? In all this did not Job sin with his lips.

11 Now when Job's three friends heard of all this evil that was come upon him, they came every one from his own place; Eliphaz the Temanite, and Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite: for they had made an appointment together to come to mourn with him and to comfort him.

12 And when they lifted up their eyes afar off, and knew him not, they lifted up their voice, and wept; and they rent every one his mantle, and sprinkled dust upon their heads toward heaven.

13 So they sat down with him upon the ground seven days and seven nights, and none spake a word unto him: for they saw that his grief was very great.

Job Loses His Health

2 ( A ) Again, there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord , and [ a ] Satan also came among them to present himself before the Lord . 2 The Lord said to Satan, “Where have you come from?” Then Satan answered the Lord and said, “From roaming about on the earth and walking around on it.” 3 The Lord said to Satan, “Have you [ b ] considered My servant Job? For there is no one like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man [ c ] fearing God and turning away from evil. And he still ( B ) holds firm to his integrity, although you incited Me against him to [ d ] ruin him without cause.” 4 Satan answered the Lord and said, “Skin for skin! Yes, all that a man has, he will give for his life. 5 ( C ) However, reach out with Your hand now, and ( D ) touch his bone and his flesh; he will curse You to Your face!” 6 So the Lord said to Satan, “Behold, he is in your [ e ] power, only spare his life.”

7 Then Satan went out from the presence of the Lord and struck Job with ( E ) severe boils from the sole of his foot to the top of his head. 8 And Job took a piece of pottery to scrape himself while ( F ) he was sitting in the ashes.

9 Then his wife said to him, “Do you still hold firm your integrity? Curse God and die!” 10 But he said to her, “You are speaking as one of the foolish women speaks. ( G ) Shall we actually accept good from God but not accept adversity?” ( H ) Despite all this, Job did not sin with his lips.

11 Now when Job’s three friends heard about all this adversity that had come upon him, they came, each one from his own place—Eliphaz the ( I ) Temanite, Bildad the ( J ) Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite; and they made an appointment together to come to ( K ) sympathize with him and comfort him. 12 When they [ f ] looked from a distance and did not recognize him, they raised their voices and wept. And each of them ( L ) tore his robe, and they ( M ) threw dust over their heads toward the sky. 13 ( N ) Then they sat down on the ground with him for seven days and seven nights, with no one speaking a word to him, for they saw that his pain was very great.

In all this, Job did not sin in what he said. ( Q )
