Job continues to speak

14 Everyone that a woman gives birth to lives only for a short time.
The days of his life are full of trouble.
2 He is like a flower that grows
and then it soon dies.
His life quickly disappears like a shadow.
3 I am only a human like that,
so why do you watch me so carefully?
Why do you want to bring me into a court to judge me?
4 People are not clean and pure.
Nobody can change them to become pure.
5 You have decided how long people should live.
You control the number of months that each person will live.
Nobody can live any longer than that.
6 So do not watch us! Leave us alone!
We must work for the time that you have decided.
Please leave us to work in peace.

7 If someone cuts down a tree,
the tree may not die.
New branches may grow from it.
8 Its roots in the ground may be old.
The part of the tree that remains may be nearly dead.
9 But if only a little water comes near to it,
it will start to grow again.
It will make new branches,
like a young plant.
10 But when people lose their strength and they die,
that is the end.
After they die, where do they go?
11 When the water disappears from a lake or a river,
they become dry.
12 It is the same with people when they die.
They will never rise to live again.
As long as the sky remains above the earth,
they will continue to sleep in death.

13 Please hide me in the place where dead people go!
Hide me there until you are no longer angry.
Decide how long I must be there,
and then remember me again!
14 If a man dies, will he live again?
If I knew that, I would suffer patiently.
I would wait until my troubles have finished.
15 You would call me and I would answer you.
You would want to see me again,
because your own hands created me.
16 You would watch me carefully,
but you would not make a note of my sins.
17 You would forgive me for my sins.
You would hide them away.

18 But mountains fall down and they break into pieces,
Rocks fall down from their places.
19 Stones become sand when water pours over them.
Floods wash away soil.
In the same way, you remove hope from a person's life.
20 Finally, you bring his life to an end.
He leaves this world.
You change his face in death
and you send him away.
21 If his sons become famous,
he does not know about it.
If they become ashamed,
he does not know that either.
22 A dead person thinks only about himself.
He feels his own pain and he is very sad.’

14 “We are all human beings. [ a ]
Our life is short and full of trouble.
2 Our life is like a flower that grows quickly and then dies away.
Our life is like a shadow that is here for a short time and then is gone.
3 God, do you need to keep an eye on something so small?
Why bother to bring charges against me?

4 “No one can make something clean from something so dirty.
5 The length of our life has been decided.
You alone know how long that is.
You have set the limits for us and nothing can change them.
6 So stop watching us; leave us alone,
and let us enjoy this hard life until we have put in our time.

7 “There is always hope for a tree.
If it is cut down, it can grow again.
It will keep sending out new branches.
8 Its roots might grow old in the ground
and its stump die in the dirt,
9 but with water, it will grow again.
It will grow branches like a new plant.
10 But when a man dies,
he becomes weak and sick, and then he is gone!
11 Like a lake that goes dry
or a river that loses its source,
12 so people lose their lives,
never to live again.
The skies will all pass away
before they rise from death.
The skies will all disappear before
anyone wakes up from that sleep!

13 “I wish you would hide me in my grave.
I wish you would hide me there, until your anger is gone.
Then you could pick a time to remember me.
14 If a man dies, will he live again?
If so, I would gladly suffer through this time waiting for my release. [ b ]
15 God, you would call me,
and I would answer you.
Then I, the one you made,
would be important to you.
16 You would still watch every step I take,
but you would not remember my sins.
17 It would be as if you had sealed my sins in a bag.
It would be as if you had covered my guilt with plaster.

18 “Mountains fall and crumble away.
Large rocks break loose and fall.
19 Water flowing over stones wears them down.
Floods wash away the soil on the ground.
In the same way, God, you destroy the hope people have.
20 You defeat them completely
and then they are gone.
You change the way they look
and send them away forever to the place of death.
21 If their sons are honored, they will never know it.
If their sons do wrong, they will never see it.
22 They only feel the pain in their bodies,
and they alone cry for themselves.”

Footnotes

  1. Job 14:1 human beings Literally, “born of woman.”
  2. Job 14:14 I would … release Or “I would wait my whole tour of duty for my replacement to come.”

14 Man that is born of a woman is of few days and full of trouble.

2 He cometh forth like a flower, and is cut down: he fleeth also as a shadow, and continueth not.

3 And doth thou open thine eyes upon such an one, and bringest me into judgment with thee?

4 Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? not one.

5 Seeing his days are determined, the number of his months are with thee, thou hast appointed his bounds that he cannot pass;

6 Turn from him, that he may rest, till he shall accomplish, as an hireling, his day.

7 For there is hope of a tree, if it be cut down, that it will sprout again, and that the tender branch thereof will not cease.

8 Though the root thereof wax old in the earth, and the stock thereof die in the ground;

9 Yet through the scent of water it will bud, and bring forth boughs like a plant.

10 But man dieth, and wasteth away: yea, man giveth up the ghost, and where is he?

11 As the waters fail from the sea, and the flood decayeth and drieth up:

12 So man lieth down, and riseth not: till the heavens be no more, they shall not awake, nor be raised out of their sleep.

13 O that thou wouldest hide me in the grave, that thou wouldest keep me secret, until thy wrath be past, that thou wouldest appoint me a set time, and remember me!

14 If a man die, shall he live again? all the days of my appointed time will I wait, till my change come.

15 Thou shalt call, and I will answer thee: thou wilt have a desire to the work of thine hands.

16 For now thou numberest my steps: dost thou not watch over my sin?

17 My transgression is sealed up in a bag, and thou sewest up mine iniquity.

18 And surely the mountains falling cometh to nought, and the rock is removed out of his place.

19 The waters wear the stones: thou washest away the things which grow out of the dust of the earth; and thou destroyest the hope of man.

20 Thou prevailest for ever against him, and he passeth: thou changest his countenance, and sendest him away.

21 His sons come to honour, and he knoweth it not; and they are brought low, but he perceiveth it not of them.

22 But his flesh upon him shall have pain, and his soul within him shall mourn.

Job Speaks of the Finality of Death

14 ( A ) Man, who is born of woman,
Is [ a ] short-lived and ( B ) full of turmoil.
2 ( C ) Like a flower he comes out and withers.
He also flees like ( D ) a shadow and does not remain.
3 You also ( E ) open Your eyes on him
And ( F ) bring [ b ] him into judgment with Yourself.
4 ( G ) Who can make the clean out of the unclean?
No one!
5 Since his days are determined,
The ( H ) number of his months is with You;
And You have [ c ] set his limits so that he cannot pass.
6 ( I ) Look away from him so that he may [ d ] rest,
Until he [ e ] fulfills his day like a hired worker.

7 “For there is hope for a tree,
When it is cut down, that it will sprout again,
And its shoots will not [ f ] fail.
8 Though its roots grow old in the ground,
And its stump dies in the dry soil,
9 At the scent of water it will flourish
And produce sprigs like a plant.
10 But ( J ) a man dies and lies prostrate.
A person ( K ) passes away, and where is he?
11 As ( L ) water [ g ] evaporates from the sea,
And a river becomes parched and dried up,
12 So ( M ) a man lies down and does not rise.
Until the heavens no longer exist,
[ h ] He will not awake nor be woken from [ i ] his sleep.

13 “Oh that You would hide me in [ j ] Sheol,
That You would conceal me ( N ) until Your wrath returns to You ,
That You would set a limit for me and remember me!
14 If a man dies, will he live again ?
All the days of my struggle I will wait
Until my relief comes.
15 You will call, and I will answer You;
You will long for ( O ) the work of Your hands.
16 For now You ( P ) number my steps,
You do not ( Q ) observe my sin.
17 My wrongdoing is ( R ) sealed up in a bag,
And You cover over my [ k ] guilt.

18 “But the falling mountain [ l ] crumbles away,
And the rock moves from its place;
19 Water wears away stones,
Its torrents wash away the dust of the earth;
So You ( S ) destroy a man’s hope.
20 You forever overpower him and he ( T ) departs;
You change his appearance and send him away.
21 His sons achieve honor, but ( U ) he does not know it ;
Or they become insignificant, and he does not perceive it.
22 However, his [ m ] body pains him,
And his soul mourns for himself.”

but not keep track of my sin. ( AM )
17 My offenses will be sealed ( AN ) up in a bag; ( AO )
you will cover over my sin. ( AP )

18 “But as a mountain erodes and crumbles ( AQ )
and as a rock is moved from its place, ( AR )
19 as water wears away stones
and torrents ( AS ) wash away the soil, ( AT )
so you destroy a person’s hope. ( AU )
20 You overpower them once for all, and they are gone; ( AV )
you change their countenance and send them away. ( AW )
21 If their children are honored, they do not know it;
