King Jehoiakim destroys the Lord 's message

36 The Lord spoke to Jeremiah in the fourth year that Josiah's son Jehoiakim ruled Judah as king. He said, 2 ‘Write down on a scroll all the messages that I have spoken to you. Since Josiah was king until now, I have given you messages about Israel, Judah and the other nations. Write them all on a scroll. 3 That will warn the people of Judah about the very bad things that I have decided to do to them. When they hear about it, perhaps they will stop doing the evil things that they have been doing. Then I will forgive their sins and everything wrong that they have done.’

4 So Jeremiah told Neriah's son Baruch to come to him. Jeremiah spoke all the words that the Lord had told him to say. Baruch wrote them down on a scroll. 5 Then Jeremiah said to Baruch, ‘The officers will not let me go to the Lord 's temple. 6 So you must go to the temple yourself. Go on a special day when people are fasting and they have come from their towns. Read the words that you wrote on the scroll to the people, so that they can all hear them. 7 Perhaps they will ask the Lord to forgive them. Perhaps they will stop doing all the evil things that they have been doing. The Lord is very angry with them and he has warned them that he will punish them.’

8 Neriah's son Baruch did everything that the prophet Jeremiah had told him. He went to the Lord 's temple. He read the Lord 's message that was written on the scroll. 9 That happened in the ninth month of the fifth year that Jehoiakim ruled Judah as king. People from all Judah's towns had come to Jerusalem. They joined with the people of Jerusalem to fast and pray in the Lord 's temple. 10 Baruch stood in the temple, at the entrance of the room of Gemariah, the son of Shaphan. Shaphan had been the king's secretary. Gemariah's room was in the higher yard of the temple, near the New Gate. Baruch stood there. He read the Lord 's message that Jeremiah had told him to write on the scroll.

11 Micaiah, son of Gemariah and grandson of Shaphan, heard the Lord 's message as Baruch read it aloud. 12 Then Micaiah went to the secretary's room in the king's palace. All the king's officers were meeting there. They included: the king's secretary Elishama, Shemaiah's son Delaiah, Akbor's son Elnathan, Shaphan's son Gemariah, and Hananiah's son Zedekiah. All the officers were sitting there. 13 Micaiah told them everything that he had heard when Baruch read the scroll aloud to the people. 14 The officers sent somebody to go and speak to Baruch. They sent Jehudi, son of Nethaniah, and the grandson of Cushi's son, Shelemiah. They told him to say to Baruch, ‘Bring here to us the scroll with the words that you read aloud to the people.’

So Neriah's son Baruch went to them. He took the scroll with him in his hand. 15 The officers said to him, ‘Please sit down and read it to us.’ So Baruch read it to them. 16 They listened to the words that Baruch had written on the scroll. They looked at each other in fear. They said to Baruch, ‘We must certainly report this to the king. We must tell him about everything that you have read to us.’ 17 They also asked Baruch, ‘Please tell us how you wrote all these words. Did Jeremiah himself tell you what to write?’

18 Baruch said, ‘Yes, he told me what I should write. Then I used ink to write the words on this scroll.’ [ a ]

19 The officers said to Baruch, ‘You and Jeremiah must go and hide yourselves. Do not tell anyone where you are.’

20 The officers put the scroll into the room of Elishama, the king's secretary, to keep it safe. Then they went to see the king. He was in the palace yard. They reported to him everything that they had heard. 21 Then the king sent Jehudi to fetch the scroll. Jehudi brought the scroll from Elishama's room in the temple. Then he read the message that was written on the scroll. He read it aloud to the king and to all the officers who were standing around him. 22 It was autumn, so the king was sitting in the rooms that he used when it was cold. A fire was burning beside him. 23 Jehudi read a small section of the words that were written on the scroll. As soon as he finished each section, the king cut off that part of the scroll with a knife. He threw each piece of the scroll on the fire. The king continued to do that until fire had burned up the whole scroll. 24 As the king and his officers heard Jehudi read each section of the scroll, it did not make them afraid. None of them tore their clothes because they were upset. 25 Elnathan, Delaiah and Gemariah asked the king very strongly not to burn the scroll. But the king refused to listen to them. 26 Instead, the king told Prince Jerahmeel to go and find the secretary Baruch and the prophet Jeremiah. Jerahmeel went with Azriel's son Seraiah and Abdeel's son Shelemiah to take hold of them. But the Lord had hidden Baruch and Jeremiah.

Baruch and Jeremiah write another scroll

27 After the king had destroyed the scroll on which Baruch had written Jeremiah's words, the Lord spoke to Jeremiah again. 28 He said, ‘Take another scroll. Write on it everything that was written on the first scroll that King Jehoiakim of Judah burned in the fire. 29 Then tell the king that the Lord says this: “You burned the scroll because you did not like the message that was written on it. It said that the king of Babylon would come to destroy this land, with all its people and animals. You warned Jeremiah that he should not write things like that.” 30 So now the Lord says this to you, Jehoiakim, king of Judah: “None of your descendants will rule David's kingdom of Judah. When you die, people will not bury your body. They will throw your dead body on the ground. As it lies there, the sun will burn it in the daytime. At night it will be cold with frost. 31 I will punish you, your descendants and your officers because you have all done wicked things. I will also bring terrible trouble on the people of Jerusalem and all of Judah. I will punish everyone in the way that I promised I would do. I warned them, but they did not listen to me.” ’

32 Then Jeremiah took another scroll. He gave it to Neriah's son, Baruch, the secretary. Jeremiah spoke the same message that Baruch had written on the first scroll. That was the scroll that King Jehoiakim of Judah had burned in the fire. They also added more messages that were like the first one.

King Jehoiakim Burns Jeremiah’s Scroll

36 The message from the Lord came to Jeremiah. This was during the fourth year that Jehoiakim [ a ] son of Josiah was king of Judah. This was the message from the Lord: 2 “Jeremiah, get a scroll and write on it all the messages I have spoken to you. I have spoken to you about the nations of Israel and Judah and all the other nations. Write all the words that I have spoken to you from the time that Josiah was king, until now. 3 Maybe the people of Judah will hear what I am planning to do to them and will stop doing bad things. If they will do that, I will forgive them for the terrible sins they have committed.”

4 So Jeremiah called a man named Baruch son of Neriah. Jeremiah spoke the messages the Lord had given him. While he spoke, Baruch wrote the messages on the scroll. 5 Then Jeremiah said to Baruch, “I cannot go to the Lord ’s Temple. I am not allowed to go there. 6 So I want you to go to the Temple of the Lord . Go there on a day of fasting and read to the people from the scroll. Read to the people the messages from the Lord that you wrote on the scroll as I spoke them to you. Read them to all the people of Judah who come into Jerusalem from the towns where they live. 7 Perhaps they will ask the Lord to help them. Perhaps each person will stop doing bad things. The Lord has announced that he is very angry with them.” 8 So Baruch son of Neriah did everything Jeremiah the prophet told him to do. Baruch read aloud the scroll that had the Lord ’s messages written on it. He read it in the Lord ’s Temple.

9 In the ninth month of the fifth year that Jehoiakim was king, a fast was announced. All those who lived in the city of Jerusalem and everyone who had come into Jerusalem from the towns of Judah were supposed to fast before the Lord . 10 At that time Baruch read the scroll that contained Jeremiah’s words. He read the scroll in the Temple of the Lord to all the people who were there. Baruch was in the room of Gemariah in the upper courtyard when he read from the scroll. That room was located at the entrance of the New Gate of the Temple. Gemariah was the son of Shaphan. Gemariah was a scribe in the Temple.

11 A man named Micaiah heard all the messages from the Lord that Baruch read from the scroll. Micaiah was the son of Gemariah, the son of Shaphan. 12 When Micaiah heard the messages from the scroll, he went down to the secretary’s room in the king’s palace. All the royal officials were sitting there in the king’s palace. These are the names of the officials: Elishama the secretary, Delaiah son of Shemaiah, Elnathan son of Acbor, Gemariah son of Shaphan, Zedekiah son of Hananiah; all the other royal officials were there too. 13 Micaiah told them everything he had heard Baruch read from the scroll.

14 Then all the officials sent a man named Jehudi to Baruch. (Jehudi was the son of Nethaniah, son of Shelemiah. Shelemiah was the son of Cushi.) Jehudi said to Baruch, “Bring the scroll that you read from and come with me.”

Baruch son of Neriah took the scroll and went with Jehudi to the officials.

15 Then the officials said to Baruch, “Sit down and read the scroll to us.”

So Baruch read the scroll to them.

16 When the royal officials heard all the messages from the scroll, they were afraid and looked at one another. They said to Baruch, “We must tell King Jehoiakim about these messages on the scroll.” 17 Then the officials asked Baruch, “Tell us, Baruch, where did you get these messages that you wrote on the scroll? Did you write down what Jeremiah said to you?”

18 “Yes,” Baruch answered. “Jeremiah spoke, and I wrote down all the messages with ink on this scroll.”

19 Then the royal officials said to Baruch, “You and Jeremiah must go and hide. Don’t tell anyone where you are hiding.”

20 Then the royal officials put the scroll in the room of Elishama the scribe. They went to King Jehoiakim and told him all about the scroll.

21 So King Jehoiakim sent Jehudi to get the scroll. Jehudi brought the scroll from the room of Elishama the scribe. Then Jehudi read the scroll to the king and all the servants who stood around the king. 22 The time this happened was in the ninth month, [ b ] so King Jehoiakim was sitting in the part of the palace used for winter. There was a fire burning in a small fireplace in front of the king. 23 Jehudi began to read from the scroll. But after he would read two or three columns, King Jehoiakim would grab the scroll. Then he would cut those columns off the scroll with a small knife and throw them into the fireplace. Finally, the whole scroll was burned in the fire. 24 And, when King Jehoiakim and his servants heard the message from the scroll, they were not afraid. They did not tear their clothes to show sorrow for doing wrong.

25 Elnathan, Delaiah, and Gemariah tried to talk King Jehoiakim out of burning the scroll, but he would not listen to them. 26 Instead King Jehoiakim commanded some men to arrest Baruch the scribe and Jeremiah the prophet. These men were Jerahmeel, a son of the king, Seraiah son of Azriel, and Shelemiah son of Abdeel. But they could not find Baruch and Jeremiah, because the Lord had hidden them.

27 King Jehoiakim burned the scroll on which Baruch had written all the words that Jeremiah had spoken to him. Then this message from the Lord came to Jeremiah:

28 “Get another scroll. Write all the messages on it that were on the first scroll that King Jehoiakim of Judah burned. 29 Also tell King Jehoiakim of Judah that this is what the Lord says: ‘Jehoiakim, you burned that scroll. You said, “Why did Jeremiah write that the king of Babylon will surely come and destroy this land and kill all the people and animals in it?” 30 So this is what the Lord says about King Jehoiakim of Judah: Jehoiakim’s descendants will not sit on David’s throne. When Jehoiakim dies, he will not get a king’s funeral, but his body will be thrown out on the ground. His body will be left out in the heat of the day and the cold frost of the night. 31 I will punish Jehoiakim and his children, and I will punish his officials. I will do this because they are wicked. I will bring terrible disasters on them and on all those who live in Jerusalem and on the people from Judah. I will bring all these bad things on them, just as I warned them, because they have not listened to me.’”

32 Then Jeremiah took another scroll and gave it to Baruch son of Neriah, the scribe. As Jeremiah spoke, Baruch wrote on the scroll the same messages that were on the scroll that King Jehoiakim had burned in the fire. And many other words like those messages were added to the second scroll.

  1. Jeremiah 36:1 the fourth year … Jehoiakim This was about 605 B.C.
  2. Jeremiah 36:22 ninth month That is, November–December.

36 And it came to pass in the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah, that this word came unto Jeremiah from the Lord , saying,

2 Take thee a roll of a book, and write therein all the words that I have spoken unto thee against Israel, and against Judah, and against all the nations, from the day I spake unto thee, from the days of Josiah, even unto this day.

3 It may be that the house of Judah will hear all the evil which I purpose to do unto them; that they may return every man from his evil way; that I may forgive their iniquity and their sin.

4 Then Jeremiah called Baruch the son of Neriah: and Baruch wrote from the mouth of Jeremiah all the words of the Lord , which he had spoken unto him, upon a roll of a book.

5 And Jeremiah commanded Baruch, saying, I am shut up; I cannot go into the house of the Lord :

6 Therefore go thou, and read in the roll, which thou hast written from my mouth, the words of the Lord in the ears of the people in the Lord 's house upon the fasting day: and also thou shalt read them in the ears of all Judah that come out of their cities.

7 It may be they will present their supplication before the Lord , and will return every one from his evil way: for great is the anger and the fury that the Lord hath pronounced against this people.

8 And Baruch the son of Neriah did according to all that Jeremiah the prophet commanded him, reading in the book the words of the Lord in the Lord 's house.

9 And it came to pass in the fifth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah, in the ninth month, that they proclaimed a fast before the Lord to all the people in Jerusalem, and to all the people that came from the cities of Judah unto Jerusalem.

10 Then read Baruch in the book the words of Jeremiah in the house of the Lord , in the chamber of Gemariah the son of Shaphan the scribe, in the higher court, at the entry of the new gate of the Lord 's house, in the ears of all the people.

11 When Michaiah the son of Gemariah, the son of Shaphan, had heard out of the book all the words of the Lord ,

12 Then he went down into the king's house, into the scribe's chamber: and, lo, all the princes sat there, even Elishama the scribe, and Delaiah the son of Shemaiah, and Elnathan the son of Achbor, and Gemariah the son of Shaphan, and Zedekiah the son of Hananiah, and all the princes.

13 Then Michaiah declared unto them all the words that he had heard, when Baruch read the book in the ears of the people.

14 Therefore all the princes sent Jehudi the son of Nethaniah, the son of Shelemiah, the son of Cushi, unto Baruch, saying, Take in thine hand the roll wherein thou hast read in the ears of the people, and come. So Baruch the son of Neriah took the roll in his hand, and came unto them.

15 And they said unto him, Sit down now, and read it in our ears. So Baruch read it in their ears.

16 Now it came to pass, when they had heard all the words, they were afraid both one and other, and said unto Baruch, We will surely tell the king of all these words.

17 And they asked Baruch, saying, Tell us now, How didst thou write all these words at his mouth?

18 Then Baruch answered them, He pronounced all these words unto me with his mouth, and I wrote them with ink in the book.

19 Then said the princes unto Baruch, Go, hide thee, thou and Jeremiah; and let no man know where ye be.

20 And they went in to the king into the court, but they laid up the roll in the chamber of Elishama the scribe, and told all the words in the ears of the king.

21 So the king sent Jehudi to fetch the roll: and he took it out of Elishama the scribe's chamber. And Jehudi read it in the ears of the king, and in the ears of all the princes which stood beside the king.

22 Now the king sat in the winterhouse in the ninth month: and there was a fire on the hearth burning before him.

23 And it came to pass, that when Jehudi had read three or four leaves, he cut it with the penknife, and cast it into the fire that was on the hearth, until all the roll was consumed in the fire that was on the hearth.

24 Yet they were not afraid, nor rent their garments, neither the king, nor any of his servants that heard all these words.

25 Nevertheless Elnathan and Delaiah and Gemariah had made intercession to the king that he would not burn the roll: but he would not hear them.

26 But the king commanded Jerahmeel the son of Hammelech, and Seraiah the son of Azriel, and Shelemiah the son of Abdeel, to take Baruch the scribe and Jeremiah the prophet: but the Lord hid them.

27 Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah, after that the king had burned the roll, and the words which Baruch wrote at the mouth of Jeremiah, saying,

28 Take thee again another roll, and write in it all the former words that were in the first roll, which Jehoiakim the king of Judah hath burned.

29 And thou shalt say to Jehoiakim king of Judah, Thus saith the Lord ; Thou hast burned this roll, saying, Why hast thou written therein, saying, The king of Babylon shall certainly come and destroy this land, and shall cause to cease from thence man and beast?

30 Therefore thus saith the Lord of Jehoiakim king of Judah; He shall have none to sit upon the throne of David: and his dead body shall be cast out in the day to the heat, and in the night to the frost.

31 And I will punish him and his seed and his servants for their iniquity; and I will bring upon them, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and upon the men of Judah, all the evil that I have pronounced against them; but they hearkened not.

32 Then took Jeremiah another roll, and gave it to Baruch the scribe, the son of Neriah; who wrote therein from the mouth of Jeremiah all the words of the book which Jehoiakim king of Judah had burned in the fire: and there were added besides unto them many like words.

Jeremiah’s Scroll Read in the Temple

36 In the ( A ) fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, this word came to Jeremiah from the Lord , saying, 2 “Take a [ a ] ( B ) scroll and write on it all the ( C ) words which I have spoken to you concerning ( D ) Israel, Judah, and all the ( E ) nations, from the ( F ) day I first spoke to you, from the days of Josiah, even to this day. 3 ( G ) Perhaps the house of Judah will listen to all the disaster which I plan to carry out against them, so that every person will ( H ) turn from his evil way; then I will ( I ) forgive their wrongdoing and their sin.”

4 Then Jeremiah called ( J ) Baruch the son of Neriah, and Baruch wrote on a [ b ] ( K ) scroll [ c ] at the dictation of Jeremiah all the words of the Lord which He had spoken to him. 5 Jeremiah then commanded Baruch, saying, “I am [ d ] ( L ) restricted; I cannot go into the house of the Lord . 6 So you go and ( M ) read from the scroll, which you have ( N ) written [ e ] at my dictation, the words of the Lord [ f ] to the people at the Lord s house on a day of ( O ) fasting. And you shall also read them [ g ] to all the people of Judah who come from their cities. 7 ( P ) Perhaps their pleading will [ h ] come before the Lord , and everyone will turn from his evil way; for ( Q ) great is the anger and the wrath that the Lord has pronounced against this people.” 8 So Baruch the son of Neriah acted in accordance with all that Jeremiah the prophet commanded him, ( R ) reading from the book the words of the Lord in the Lord s house.

9 Now in the ( S ) fifth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, in the ( T ) ninth month, all the people in Jerusalem and all the people who ( U ) came from the cities of Judah to Jerusalem proclaimed a ( V ) fast before the Lord . 10 Then Baruch read to all the people from the book the words of Jeremiah in the house of the Lord in the ( W ) chamber of ( X ) Gemariah the son of Shaphan the ( Y ) scribe, in the upper courtyard, at the ( Z ) entry of the New Gate of the Lord s house.

11 Now when ( AA ) Micaiah the son of Gemariah, the son of Shaphan, had heard all the words of the Lord from the book, 12 he went down to the king’s house, into the scribe’s chamber. And behold, all the officials were sitting there— ( AB ) Elishama the scribe, ( AC ) Delaiah the son of Shemaiah, ( AD ) Elnathan the son of Achbor, Gemariah the son of Shaphan, Zedekiah the son of Hananiah, and all the other officials. 13 And Micaiah ( AE ) declared to them all the words that he had heard when Baruch read from the book to the people. 14 Then all the officials sent ( AF ) Jehudi the son of Nethaniah, who was the son of Shelemiah, the son of Cushi, to Baruch, saying, “Take in your hand the scroll from which you have read to the people and come.” So Baruch the son of Neriah ( AG ) took the scroll in his hand and came to them. 15 And they said to him, “Sit down, please, and read it to us.” So Baruch ( AH ) read it to them. 16 When they had heard all the words, they turned in ( AI ) fear one to another. And they said to Baruch, “We will certainly ( AJ ) report all these words to the king.” 17 Then they asked Baruch, saying, “Tell us, please, ( AK ) how did you write all these words? Was it [ i ] at Jeremiah’s dictation?” 18 And Baruch said to them, “He ( AL ) dictated all these words to me, and I wrote them with ink on the book.” 19 Then the officials said to Baruch, “Go, ( AM ) hide yourself, you and Jeremiah, and do not let anyone know where you are.”

The Scroll Is Burned

20 So they came to the ( AN ) king in the courtyard, but they had deposited the scroll in the chamber of ( AO ) Elishama the scribe; and they reported all the words to the king. 21 Then the king sent Jehudi to get the scroll, and he took it out of the chamber of Elishama the scribe. And Jehudi ( AP ) read it to the king as well as to all the officials who were standing beside the king. 22 Now the king was sitting in the ( AQ ) winter house in the ( AR ) ninth month, with a fire burning in the brazier before him. 23 And when Jehudi had read three or four columns, the king cut it with a scribe’s knife and ( AS ) threw it into the fire that was in the brazier, until all of the scroll was consumed in the fire that was in the brazier. 24 Yet the king and all his servants who heard all these words did ( AT ) not tremble in fear, nor did they ( AU ) tear their garments. 25 Even though Elnathan, Delaiah, and Gemariah ( AV ) urged the king not to burn the scroll, he would not listen to them. 26 And the king commanded Jerahmeel the king’s son, Seraiah the son of Azriel, and Shelemiah the son of Abdeel to ( AW ) seize Baruch the scribe and Jeremiah the prophet, but the ( AX ) Lord hid them.

The Scroll Is Replaced

27 Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah after the king had ( AY ) burned the scroll and the words which ( AZ ) Baruch had written [ j ] at the dictation of Jeremiah, saying, 28 ( BA ) Take again another scroll and write on it all the previous words that were ( BB ) on the first scroll, which Jehoiakim the king of Judah burned. 29 And concerning Jehoiakim king of Judah you shall say, ‘This is what the Lord says: “You have ( BC ) burned this scroll, saying, ‘ ( BD ) Why have you written on it [ k ] that the ( BE ) king of Babylon will certainly come and destroy this land, and will make mankind and animals disappear from it?’” 30 Therefore this is what the Lord says concerning Jehoiakim king of Judah: “He shall have ( BF ) no one to sit on the throne of David, and his ( BG ) dead body shall be thrown out to the heat of the day and the frost of the night. 31 I will also ( BH ) punish him, his [ l ] descendants, and his servants for their wrongdoing, and I will ( BI ) bring on them and the inhabitants of Jerusalem and the people of Judah all the disaster that I have declared to them—but they did not listen.”’”

32 Then Jeremiah took another scroll and gave it to the scribe Baruch the son of Neriah, and he ( BJ ) wrote on it at the [ m ] dictation of Jeremiah all the words of the book which Jehoiakim king of Judah had burned in the fire; and many [ n ] similar words were added to them.

Jehoiakim Burns Jeremiah’s Scroll

36 In the fourth year of Jehoiakim ( A ) son of Josiah king of Judah, this word came to Jeremiah from the Lord : 2 “Take a scroll ( B ) and write on it all the words ( C ) I have spoken to you concerning Israel, Judah and all the other nations from the time I began speaking to you in the reign of Josiah ( D ) till now. 3 Perhaps ( E ) when the people of Judah hear ( F ) about every disaster I plan to inflict on them, they will each turn ( G ) from their wicked ways; then I will forgive ( H ) their wickedness and their sin.”

4 So Jeremiah called Baruch ( I ) son of Neriah, ( J ) and while Jeremiah dictated ( K ) all the words the Lord had spoken to him, Baruch wrote them on the scroll. ( L ) 5 Then Jeremiah told Baruch, “I am restricted; I am not allowed to go to the Lord ’s temple. 6 So you go to the house of the Lord on a day of fasting ( M ) and read to the people from the scroll the words of the Lord that you wrote as I dictated. ( N ) Read them to all the people of Judah ( O ) who come in from their towns. 7 Perhaps they will bring their petition ( P ) before the Lord and will each turn ( Q ) from their wicked ways, for the anger ( R ) and wrath pronounced against this people by the Lord are great.”

8 Baruch son of Neriah did everything Jeremiah the prophet told him to do; at the Lord ’s temple he read the words of the Lord from the scroll. 9 In the ninth month ( S ) of the fifth year of Jehoiakim son of Josiah king of Judah, a time of fasting ( T ) before the Lord was proclaimed for all the people in Jerusalem and those who had come from the towns of Judah. 10 From the room of Gemariah ( U ) son of Shaphan ( V ) the secretary, ( W ) which was in the upper courtyard at the entrance of the New Gate ( X ) of the temple, Baruch read to all the people at the Lord ’s temple the words of Jeremiah from the scroll.

11 When Micaiah son of Gemariah, the son of Shaphan, heard all the words of the Lord from the scroll, 12 he went down to the secretary’s ( Y ) room in the royal palace, where all the officials were sitting: Elishama the secretary, Delaiah son of Shemaiah, Elnathan ( Z ) son of Akbor, Gemariah son of Shaphan, Zedekiah son of Hananiah, and all the other officials. ( AA ) 13 After Micaiah told them everything he had heard Baruch read to the people from the scroll, 14 all the officials sent Jehudi ( AB ) son of Nethaniah, the son of Shelemiah, the son of Cushi, to say to Baruch, “Bring the scroll ( AC ) from which you have read to the people and come.” So Baruch son of Neriah went to them with the scroll in his hand. 15 They said to him, “Sit down, please, and read it to us.”

So Baruch read it to them. 16 When they heard all these words, they looked at each other in fear ( AD ) and said to Baruch, “We must report all these words to the king.” 17 Then they asked Baruch, “Tell us, how did you come to write ( AE ) all this? Did Jeremiah dictate it?”

18 “Yes,” Baruch replied, “he dictated ( AF ) all these words to me, and I wrote them in ink on the scroll.”

19 Then the officials ( AG ) said to Baruch, “You and Jeremiah, go and hide. ( AH ) Don’t let anyone know where you are.”

20 After they put the scroll in the room of Elishama the secretary, they went to the king in the courtyard and reported everything to him. 21 The king sent Jehudi ( AI ) to get the scroll, and Jehudi brought it from the room of Elishama the secretary and read it to the king ( AJ ) and all the officials standing beside him. 22 It was the ninth month and the king was sitting in the winter apartment, ( AK ) with a fire burning in the firepot in front of him. 23 Whenever Jehudi had read three or four columns of the scroll, ( AL ) the king cut them off with a scribe’s knife and threw them into the firepot, until the entire scroll was burned in the fire. ( AM ) 24 The king and all his attendants who heard all these words showed no fear, ( AN ) nor did they tear their clothes. ( AO ) 25 Even though Elnathan, Delaiah ( AP ) and Gemariah ( AQ ) urged the king not to burn the scroll, he would not listen to them. 26 Instead, the king commanded Jerahmeel, a son of the king, Seraiah son of Azriel and Shelemiah son of Abdeel to arrest ( AR ) Baruch the scribe and Jeremiah the prophet. But the Lord had hidden ( AS ) them.

27 After the king burned the scroll containing the words that Baruch had written at Jeremiah’s dictation, ( AT ) the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah: 28 “Take another scroll ( AU ) and write on it all the words that were on the first scroll, which Jehoiakim king of Judah burned up. 29 Also tell Jehoiakim king of Judah, ‘This is what the Lord says: You burned that scroll and said, “Why did you write on it that the king of Babylon would certainly come and destroy this land and wipe from it ( AV ) both man and beast?” ( AW ) 30 Therefore this is what the Lord says about Jehoiakim ( AX ) king of Judah: He will have no one to sit on the throne of David; his body will be thrown out ( AY ) and exposed ( AZ ) to the heat by day and the frost by night. ( BA ) 31 I will punish him and his children ( BB ) and his attendants for their wickedness; I will bring on them and those living in Jerusalem and the people of Judah every disaster ( BC ) I pronounced against them, because they have not listened. ( BD ) ’”

32 So Jeremiah took another scroll and gave it to the scribe Baruch son of Neriah, and as Jeremiah dictated, ( BE ) Baruch wrote ( BF ) on it all the words of the scroll that Jehoiakim king of Judah had burned ( BG ) in the fire. And many similar words were added to them.
