- Isaiah Chapter 63
63 Who is this who is coming from Edom?
He is coming from Bozrah
and his clothes are bright red.
He wears beautiful royal clothes,
and he marches forward with great strength.
He says, ‘It is me! I, the Lord , tell you that I have won the fight!
I have the power to save you.’
2 But why are your clothes red?
You look like someone who has walked on grapes,
and you have squeezed them to make wine.
3 He says, ‘I have walked on the grapes alone.
Nobody from the nations came to help me.
I walked on them because I was angry.
I squeezed them to pieces in my anger.
Their blood splashed on my clothes,
and it made all my clothes dirty.
4 I decided that it was time to punish my enemies.
Then I would save my people from their power.
5 I looked for somebody to give help,
but there was nobody.
I was very upset,
because nobody was there to help.
So I used my own strength to rescue my people.
My anger helped me to be strong.
6 Because I was angry,
I walked on the nations to punish them.
My anger was like strong wine that made them drunk.
I poured their blood onto the ground.’
7 I will speak about all the good things that the Lord does because he loves his people. We should praise him for everything that he does for us. He has done many good things for us, Israel's family. He helps us because he loves us very much, and he is very kind.
8 The Lord said, ‘Surely, they are my own people. As my children, they will not turn against me.’ So he became their Saviour. 9 When his people suffered, he also had pain. He sent his own angel to go and save them. Because he loved them and he was kind to them, he redeemed them. He lifted them up and he carried them, through all the years long ago.
10 But they turned against him. They made his Holy Spirit angry. So he then became their enemy. He fought against them.
11 Then they remembered past years, when Moses led their ancestors out of Egypt. They said, ‘Where is the Lord now, when we need him? He brought his people safely through the sea, with Moses as their leader. He caused his Holy Spirit to work among them. 12 He caused his power to be with Moses, as Moses raised his arm over the sea. He caused the waters to become separate so that his people could go across. In that way, he caused his name always to be famous. 13 He led them through the deep water of the sea. They ran across like horses on open ground, and they did not fall. 14 The Lord 's Spirit led them to a place of rest, like cows that go down to a quiet valley.’
Yes, Lord , you were your people's guide. In that way, you made your name great.
15 So now, do something to help us! Look down from your beautiful, holy home in heaven. Use your power to show that we are your special people. Have you forgotten how to be kind to us?
16 Remember that you are our Father. Maybe our ancestor Abraham does not recognize us. Even Israel himself may not recognize us. But you, Lord , are our Father. Since times long ago, your name has been our Redeemer.
17 Lord , why do you cause us to turn away from your ways? You make our minds become hard, so that we do not obey you. Please come back to help us, because we are your servants. We are the tribes that you have chosen for yourself!
18 For only a short time, the holy place belonged to us, your special people. Then our enemies knocked down your temple. 19 It seems that we have not belonged to you for a long time. You no longer rule over us or take care of us.
63 Who is this coming from Edom,
from the city of Bozrah?
His clothes are stained bright red.
He is glorious in his clothes.
He is walking tall with his great power.
He says, “I have the power to save you,
and I speak the truth.”
2 “Why are your clothes bright red?
They are like the clothes of someone who tramples grapes to make wine.”
3 He answers, “I walked in the winepress by myself.
No one helped me.
I was angry, and I trampled the grapes.
The juice [ a ] splashed on my clothes, so now they are stained.
4 I chose a time to punish people.
Now the time has come for me to save and protect my people.
5 I looked around, but I saw no one to help me.
I was surprised that no one supported me.
So I used my own power to save my people.
My own anger supported me.
6 In my anger I trampled down the nations.
I punished them in anger and spilled their blood [ b ] on the ground.”
7 I will remember the kind things the Lord has done,
and I will remember to praise him.
The Lord has given many good things
to the family of Israel.
He has been very kind to us.
He has shown us mercy.
8 He said, “These are my people.
These are my real children.”
So he saved them.
9 The people had many troubles,
but he was not against them.
He loved them and felt sorry for them,
so he saved them.
He sent his special angel to save them.
He picked them up and carried them, just as he did long ago.
10 But they turned against him
and made his Holy Spirit very sad.
So the Lord became their enemy
and fought against them.
11 Then they remembered what happened long ago.
They remembered Moses and those with him.
So where is the one who brought them through the sea
along with the shepherds who led his flock?
Where is the one
who sent his Holy Spirit to live among them?
12 He was by Moses’ side and led him with his wonderful hand.
He divided the water,
so that the people could walk through the sea.
He made his name famous
by doing those great things.
13 He led the people through the deep sea.
Like a horse running through the desert,
they walked without falling.
14 Like cattle going down to the valley,
The Spirit of the Lord led them.
This is how you led your people
and made your name wonderful.
15 Please, look down from the heavens.
See what is happening now.
Look down at us from your great and holy home in heaven.
Where is your strong love [ c ] for us?
Where is your compassion?
Why are you hiding your kind love from me?
16 Look, you are our father!
Abraham does not know us.
Israel does not recognize us.
Lord , you are our father!
You are the one who has always saved us!
17 Lord , why are you pushing us away from you?
Why are you making it hard for us to follow you?
Come back to us!
We are your servants.
Come to us and help us!
Our tribes belong to you.
18 Your holy people had their land only a short time.
Then our enemies trampled down your holy Temple.
19 Some people don’t follow you.
They don’t wear your name.
And we have been like them
for a very long time.
63 Who is this that cometh from Edom, with dyed garments from Bozrah? this that is glorious in his apparel, travelling in the greatness of his strength? I that speak in righteousness, mighty to save.
2 Wherefore art thou red in thine apparel, and thy garments like him that treadeth in the winefat?
3 I have trodden the winepress alone; and of the people there was none with me: for I will tread them in mine anger, and trample them in my fury; and their blood shall be sprinkled upon my garments, and I will stain all my raiment.
4 For the day of vengeance is in mine heart, and the year of my redeemed is come.
5 And I looked, and there was none to help; and I wondered that there was none to uphold: therefore mine own arm brought salvation unto me; and my fury, it upheld me.
6 And I will tread down the people in mine anger, and make them drunk in my fury, and I will bring down their strength to the earth.
7 I will mention the lovingkindnesses of the Lord , and the praises of the Lord , according to all that the Lord hath bestowed on us, and the great goodness toward the house of Israel, which he hath bestowed on them according to his mercies, and according to the multitude of his lovingkindnesses.
8 For he said, Surely they are my people, children that will not lie: so he was their Saviour.
9 In all their affliction he was afflicted, and the angel of his presence saved them: in his love and in his pity he redeemed them; and he bare them, and carried them all the days of old.
10 But they rebelled, and vexed his holy Spirit: therefore he was turned to be their enemy, and he fought against them.
11 Then he remembered the days of old, Moses, and his people, saying, Where is he that brought them up out of the sea with the shepherd of his flock? where is he that put his holy Spirit within him?
12 That led them by the right hand of Moses with his glorious arm, dividing the water before them, to make himself an everlasting name?
13 That led them through the deep, as an horse in the wilderness, that they should not stumble?
14 As a beast goeth down into the valley, the Spirit of the Lord caused him to rest: so didst thou lead thy people, to make thyself a glorious name.
15 Look down from heaven, and behold from the habitation of thy holiness and of thy glory: where is thy zeal and thy strength, the sounding of thy bowels and of thy mercies toward me? are they restrained?
16 Doubtless thou art our father, though Abraham be ignorant of us, and Israel acknowledge us not: thou, O Lord , art our father, our redeemer; thy name is from everlasting.
17 O Lord , why hast thou made us to err from thy ways, and hardened our heart from thy fear? Return for thy servants' sake, the tribes of thine inheritance.
18 The people of thy holiness have possessed it but a little while: our adversaries have trodden down thy sanctuary.
19 We are thine: thou never barest rule over them; they were not called by thy name.
63 Who is this who comes from ( A ) Edom,
With ( B ) garments of [ a ] glowing colors from ( C ) Bozrah,
This One who is majestic in His apparel,
[ b ] Marching in the greatness of His strength?
“It is I, the One who speaks in righteousness, ( D ) mighty to save.”
2 Why is Your apparel red,
And Your garments like one who ( E ) treads in the wine press?
3 “ ( F ) I have trodden the wine trough alone,
And from the peoples there was no one with Me.
I also ( G ) trod them in My anger
And ( H ) trampled them in My wrath;
And ( I ) their [ c ] lifeblood is sprinkled on My garments,
And I [ d ] stained all My clothes.
4 For the ( J ) day of vengeance was in My heart,
And My year of redemption has come.
5 I looked, but there was ( K ) no one to help,
And I was astonished and there was no one to uphold;
So My ( L ) own arm brought salvation to Me,
And My wrath upheld Me.
6 I ( M ) trampled down the peoples in My anger
And made them ( N ) drunk with My wrath,
And I [ e ] poured out their lifeblood on the earth.”
7 I will make mention of the ( O ) mercies of the Lord , and the praises of the Lord ,
According to all that the Lord has granted us,
And the great ( P ) goodness toward the house of Israel,
Which He has granted them according to His ( Q ) compassion
And according to the abundance of His mercies.
8 For He said, “Certainly they are ( R ) My people,
Sons who will not deal falsely.”
So He became their ( S ) Savior.
9 In all their distress [ f ] ( T ) He was distressed,
And the ( U ) angel of His presence saved them;
In His ( V ) love and in His mercy He ( W ) redeemed them,
And He ( X ) lifted them and carried them all the days of old.
10 But they ( Y ) rebelled
And grieved His ( Z ) Holy Spirit;
Therefore He turned Himself to become their enemy,
He fought against them.
11 Then ( AA ) His people remembered the days of old, of Moses.
Where is ( AB ) He who brought them up out of the sea with the [ g ] shepherds of His flock?
Where is He who ( AC ) put His Holy Spirit in the midst of [ h ] them,
12 Who caused His ( AD ) glorious arm to go at the right hand of Moses,
Who ( AE ) divided the waters before them to make for Himself an everlasting name,
13 Who led them through the depths?
Like the horse in the wilderness, they did not ( AF ) stumble;
14 Like the cattle which go down into the valley,
The Spirit of the ( AG ) Lord gave [ i ] them rest.
So You ( AH ) led Your people,
To make for Yourself a glorious name.
15 ( AI ) Look down from heaven and see from Your holy and glorious ( AJ ) lofty habitation;
Where are Your ( AK ) zeal and Your mighty deeds?
The ( AL ) stirrings of Your heart and Your compassion are restrained toward me.
16 For You are our ( AM ) Father, though ( AN ) Abraham does not know us
And Israel does not recognize us.
You, Lord , are our Father,
Our ( AO ) Redeemer from ancient times is Your name.
17 Why, Lord , do You ( AP ) cause us to stray from Your ways
And ( AQ ) harden our heart from fearing You?
( AR ) Return for the sake of Your servants, the tribes of Your heritage.
18 Your holy people possessed Your sanctuary for a little while,
Our adversaries have ( AS ) trampled it down.
19 We have become like those over whom You have never ruled,
Like those who were not called by Your name.
63 Who is this coming from Edom, ( A )
from Bozrah, ( B ) with his garments stained crimson? ( C )
Who is this, robed in splendor,
striding forward in the greatness of his strength? ( D )
“It is I, proclaiming victory,
mighty to save.” ( E )
2 Why are your garments red,
like those of one treading the winepress? ( F )
3 “I have trodden the winepress ( G ) alone;
from the nations no one was with me.
I trampled ( H ) them in my anger
and trod them down in my wrath; ( I )
their blood spattered my garments, ( J )
and I stained all my clothing.
4 It was for me the day of vengeance; ( K )
the year for me to redeem had come.
5 I looked, but there was no one ( L ) to help,
I was appalled that no one gave support;
so my own arm ( M ) achieved salvation for me,
and my own wrath sustained me. ( N )
6 I trampled ( O ) the nations in my anger;
in my wrath I made them drunk ( P )
and poured their blood ( Q ) on the ground.”
7 I will tell of the kindnesses ( R ) of the Lord ,
the deeds for which he is to be praised,
according to all the Lord has done for us—
yes, the many good things ( S )
he has done for Israel,
according to his compassion ( T ) and many kindnesses.
8 He said, “Surely they are my people, ( U )
children who will be true to me”;
and so he became their Savior. ( V )
9 In all their distress he too was distressed,
and the angel ( W ) of his presence ( X ) saved them. [ a ]
In his love and mercy he redeemed ( Y ) them;
he lifted them up and carried ( Z ) them
all the days of old. ( AA )
10 Yet they rebelled ( AB )
and grieved his Holy Spirit. ( AC )
So he turned and became their enemy ( AD )
and he himself fought ( AE ) against them.
11 Then his people recalled [ b ] the days of old,
the days of Moses and his people—
where is he who brought them through the sea, ( AF )
with the shepherd of his flock? ( AG )
Where is he who set
his Holy Spirit ( AH ) among them,
12 who sent his glorious arm ( AI ) of power
to be at Moses’ right hand,
who divided the waters ( AJ ) before them,
to gain for himself everlasting renown, ( AK )
13 who led ( AL ) them through the depths? ( AM )
Like a horse in open country,
they did not stumble; ( AN )
14 like cattle that go down to the plain,
they were given rest ( AO ) by the Spirit of the Lord .
This is how you guided your people
to make for yourself a glorious name.
15 Look down from heaven ( AP ) and see,
from your lofty throne, ( AQ ) holy and glorious.
Where are your zeal ( AR ) and your might?
Your tenderness and compassion ( AS ) are withheld ( AT ) from us.
16 But you are our Father, ( AU )
though Abraham does not know us
or Israel acknowledge ( AV ) us;
you, Lord , are our Father,
our Redeemer ( AW ) from of old is your name.
17 Why, Lord , do you make us wander ( AX ) from your ways
and harden our hearts ( AY ) so we do not revere ( AZ ) you?
Return ( BA ) for the sake of your servants,
the tribes that are your inheritance. ( BB )
18 For a little while ( BC ) your people possessed your holy place,
but now our enemies have trampled ( BD ) down your sanctuary. ( BE )
19 We are yours from of old;
but you have not ruled over them,
they have not been called [ c ] by your name. ( BF )
