60 Stand up! Shine brightly!
Now your light has come! [ a ]
The Lord 's glory has risen to shine on you.
2 Look! Darkness covers all the earth and its people.
But the Lord shines his light on you,
so that his glory appears over you.
3 People of other nations will come to your light.
Kings will come to see the light of a new day that shines on you.
4 Look all round you!
All your people are coming together to return to you.
Your sons are coming from far away,
and they carry your daughters in their arms.
5 As you see this, your eyes will shine with joy.
Your hearts will beat fast,
and you will be proud to see them.
Traders will bring valuable things to you
from lands across the seas.
The riches of other nations will come to you.
6 Traders will bring things on their camels
so that your roads are full.
Young camels will come from Midian
and from Ephah.
People will come from Sheba.
They will bring gold and incense.
They will sing aloud to praise the Lord .
7 All the sheep and goats in Kedar will come to you.
They will give you sheep from Nebaioth,
and I will accept them as sacrifices on my altar.
I will make my temple great and beautiful.
8 See those ships that sail along like clouds!
They come like doves that are flying to their homes.
9 People from lands across the seas are coming to find me.
Their big ships are leading them.
They are bringing your children from far away,
as well as silver and gold.
They come to give honour to the name of the Lord your God.
He is Israel's Holy God.
They come here because he has shown that you are great.
10 Foreign people will build your walls again.
Their kings will be your servants.
I punished you when I was angry with you.
But now I will show my grace
and I will be kind to you.
11 The gates of your city will always be open.
People will never close them,
during the day or during the night.
Then other nations will bring their riches to you,
and their kings will lead them.
12 Any nation or kingdom that refuses to serve you
will come to an end.
Enemies will completely destroy those nations.
13 The beautiful things of Lebanon will come to you.
They will bring you its pine trees,
its fir trees and its cypress trees.
The wood will make my temple beautiful.
I will cause my home on earth to be great!
14 The descendants of your cruel enemies will come to you.
They will bend down low in front of you.
Everybody who insulted you before
will now give you honour.
They will call you, ‘The City of the Lord ,
Zion that is home for Israel's Holy God.’
15 At one time, people kept away from you,
and they hated you.
Nobody travelled through you.
But now I will make you a great city,
so that people will be proud of you for ever.
Your people and their descendants will be very happy.
16 Other nations and their kings
will give you everything that you need.
They will be like mothers
who feed their babies with their milk.
Then you will know that I, the Lord ,
have made you safe.
You will know that I am your Redeemer,
the Mighty One of Jacob.
17 I will bring you gold instead of bronze.
I will bring you silver instead of iron.
I will give you bronze to use, instead of wood.
I will give you iron instead of stones.
I will cause peace to be your city's leader.
Righteousness will rule over you.
18 You will not hear the noise of violence in your land any more.
Inside its borders,
nobody will fight wars or destroy things.
You will call your city's walls ‘Salvation’,
and you will call your city's gates ‘Praise’.
19 You will no longer need the sun
to give you light in the day again.
You will not need the moon to shine at night.
Instead, the Lord will be the light
that shines on you for ever.
Yes, your God will be the light
that brings you honour.
20 Your sun will never go down again
and your moon will never disappear.
That is because the Lord will be the light
that shines on you for ever.
Then your sad days will come to an end.
21 All your people will be righteous.
The land will belong to them for ever.
I myself will plant them in the ground
like a young plant.
As they grow, they will show how great I am.
22 The least important person among you
will become a great family.
The smallest person will become a large nation.
I am the Lord .
When the right time comes,
I will cause it to happen quickly!
60 “Jerusalem, get up and shine! [ a ]
Your Light is coming!
The Glory of the Lord will shine on you.
2 Darkness now covers the earth,
and the people are in darkness.
But the Lord will shine on you,
and his Glory will appear over you.
3 Then the nations will come to your light.
Kings will come to your bright sunrise.
4 Look around you!
See all the people gathering around.
Those are your sons coming from far away,
and your daughters are there beside them.
5 “At that time you will see your people,
and your faces will shine with happiness.
First, you will be afraid,
but then you will be excited.
All the riches from across the seas will be set before you.
The riches of the nations will come to you.
6 Herds of camels from Midian and Ephah
will cross your land.
Long lines of camels will come from Sheba.
They will bring gold and incense.
People will sing praises to the Lord .
7 People will collect all the sheep from Kedar and give them to you.
They will bring you rams from Nebaioth.
You will offer those animals on my altar,
and I will accept them.
I will make my wonderful Temple
even more beautiful.
8 Look at the people.
They are rushing toward you like clouds quickly crossing the sky.
They are like doves flying to their nests.
9 The faraway lands are waiting for me.
The great cargo ships are ready to sail.
They are ready to bring your children from faraway lands.
They will bring silver and gold with them
to honor the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel.
He has done wonderful things for you.
10 Children from other lands will rebuild your walls.
Their kings will serve you.
“When I was angry, I hurt you,
but now I want to be kind to you.
So I will comfort you.
11 Your gates will always be open.
They will not be closed, day or night.
Nations and kings will bring their wealth to you.
12 Any nation or kingdom that does not serve you
will be destroyed.
13 All the great things of Lebanon will be given to you.
People will bring pine trees, fir trees, and cypress trees to you.
These trees will be used for lumber
to make my Holy Place [ b ] more beautiful.
This place is like a stool in front of my throne,
and I will honor it. [ c ]
14 In the past, people hurt you,
but they will bow down before you.
In the past, people hated you,
but they will bow down at your feet.
They will call you ‘The City of the Lord ’s,’
‘Zion of the Holy One of Israel.’
15 “People hated you.
You were left all alone with no one passing through.
But I will make you great from now on.
You will be happy forever and ever.
16 Nations will give you what you need,
like a child drinking milk from its mother.
But you will ‘drink’ riches from kings.
Then you will know that it is I, the Lord , who saves you.
You will know that I, the Great God of Jacob, protect you.
17 “You now have copper,
but I will bring you gold.
You now have iron,
but I will bring you silver.
I will change your wood into copper
and your rocks into iron.
I will change your punishment into peace.
And those who punished you will be replaced with those who are kind to you.
18 There will never again be news of violence in your country.
People will never again attack your country and steal from you.
You will name your walls, ‘Salvation’
and your gates, ‘Praise.’
19 “The sun will no longer be your light during the day.
The light from the moon will no longer be your light at night.
The Lord will be your light forever.
Your God will be your glory.
20 Your sun will never go down again.
Your moon will never again be dark.
That’s because the Lord will be your light forever,
and the dark days of mourning will end.
21 “All your people will be good.
They will get the land forever.
They are the young plant in my garden [ d ]
that will grow to be a wonderful tree.
I made them with my own hands. [ e ]
22 The smallest family will become a large family group.
The smallest tribe will become a powerful nation.
When the time is right,
I, the Lord , will come quickly.
I will make these things happen.”
60 Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee.
2 For, behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the people: but the Lord shall arise upon thee, and his glory shall be seen upon thee.
3 And the Gentiles shall come to thy light, and kings to the brightness of thy rising.
4 Lift up thine eyes round about, and see: all they gather themselves together, they come to thee: thy sons shall come from far, and thy daughters shall be nursed at thy side.
5 Then thou shalt see, and flow together, and thine heart shall fear, and be enlarged; because the abundance of the sea shall be converted unto thee, the forces of the Gentiles shall come unto thee.
6 The multitude of camels shall cover thee, the dromedaries of Midian and Ephah; all they from Sheba shall come: they shall bring gold and incense; and they shall shew forth the praises of the Lord .
7 All the flocks of Kedar shall be gathered together unto thee, the rams of Nebaioth shall minister unto thee: they shall come up with acceptance on mine altar, and I will glorify the house of my glory.
8 Who are these that fly as a cloud, and as the doves to their windows?
9 Surely the isles shall wait for me, and the ships of Tarshish first, to bring thy sons from far, their silver and their gold with them, unto the name of the Lord thy God, and to the Holy One of Israel, because he hath glorified thee.
10 And the sons of strangers shall build up thy walls, and their kings shall minister unto thee: for in my wrath I smote thee, but in my favour have I had mercy on thee.
11 Therefore thy gates shall be open continually; they shall not be shut day nor night; that men may bring unto thee the forces of the Gentiles, and that their kings may be brought.
12 For the nation and kingdom that will not serve thee shall perish; yea, those nations shall be utterly wasted.
13 The glory of Lebanon shall come unto thee, the fir tree, the pine tree, and the box together, to beautify the place of my sanctuary; and I will make the place of my feet glorious.
14 The sons also of them that afflicted thee shall come bending unto thee; and all they that despised thee shall bow themselves down at the soles of thy feet; and they shall call thee; The city of the Lord , The Zion of the Holy One of Israel.
15 Whereas thou has been forsaken and hated, so that no man went through thee, I will make thee an eternal excellency, a joy of many generations.
16 Thou shalt also suck the milk of the Gentiles, and shalt suck the breast of kings: and thou shalt know that I the Lord am thy Saviour and thy Redeemer, the mighty One of Jacob.
17 For brass I will bring gold, and for iron I will bring silver, and for wood brass, and for stones iron: I will also make thy officers peace, and thine exactors righteousness.
18 Violence shall no more be heard in thy land, wasting nor destruction within thy borders; but thou shalt call thy walls Salvation, and thy gates Praise.
19 The sun shall be no more thy light by day; neither for brightness shall the moon give light unto thee: but the Lord shall be unto thee an everlasting light, and thy God thy glory.
20 Thy sun shall no more go down; neither shall thy moon withdraw itself: for the Lord shall be thine everlasting light, and the days of thy mourning shall be ended.
21 Thy people also shall be all righteous: they shall inherit the land for ever, the branch of my planting, the work of my hands, that I may be glorified.
22 A little one shall become a thousand, and a small one a strong nation: I the Lord will hasten it in his time.
60 “ ( A ) Arise, shine; for your ( B ) light has come,
And the ( C ) glory of the Lord has risen upon you.
2 For behold, ( D ) darkness will cover the earth
And deep darkness the peoples;
But the Lord will rise upon you
And His ( E ) glory will appear upon you.
3 ( F ) Nations will come to your light,
And kings to the brightness of your rising.
4 “ ( G ) Raise your eyes all around and see;
They all gather together, they ( H ) come to you.
Your sons will come from afar,
And your ( I ) daughters will be [ a ] carried on the hip.
5 Then you will see and be ( J ) radiant,
And your heart will [ b ] thrill and rejoice;
Because the [ c ] ( K ) abundance of the sea will be turned to you,
The ( L ) wealth of the nations will come to you.
6 A multitude of camels will cover you,
The young camels of Midian and ( M ) Ephah;
All those from ( N ) Sheba will come;
They will bring ( O ) gold and frankincense,
And ( P ) proclaim good news of the praises of the Lord .
7 All the flocks of ( Q ) Kedar will be gathered to you,
The rams of Nebaioth will serve you;
They will go up on My ( R ) altar with acceptance,
And I will ( S ) glorify My glorious house.
8 ( T ) Who are these who fly like a cloud
And like the doves to their windows?
9 Certainly the ( U ) coastlands will wait for Me;
And the ( V ) ships of Tarshish will come first,
To ( W ) bring your sons from afar,
Their silver and their gold with them,
For the name of the Lord your God,
And for the Holy One of Israel because He has ( X ) glorified you.
10 “ ( Y ) Foreigners will build up your walls,
And their ( Z ) kings will serve you;
For in My ( AA ) wrath I struck you,
And in My favor I have had compassion on you.
11 Your ( AB ) gates will be open continually;
They will not be closed day or night,
So that people may ( AC ) bring you the wealth of the nations,
With ( AD ) their kings led in procession.
12 For the ( AE ) nation and the kingdom which will not serve you will perish,
And the nations will be utterly ruined.
13 The ( AF ) glory of Lebanon will come to you,
The ( AG ) juniper, the elm tree and the [ d ] cedar together,
To beautify the place of My sanctuary;
And I will make the ( AH ) place of My feet glorious.
14 The ( AI ) sons of those who afflicted you will come bowing to you,
And all those who despised you will bow down at the soles of your feet;
And they will call you the ( AJ ) city of the Lord ,
The ( AK ) Zion of the Holy One of Israel.
15 “Whereas you have been ( AL ) forsaken and ( AM ) hated
With no one passing through,
I will make you an ( AN ) object of pride forever,
A joy from generation to generation.
16 You will also ( AO ) suck the milk of nations,
And suck the breast of kings;
Then you will know that I, the Lord , am your ( AP ) Savior
And your ( AQ ) Redeemer, the Mighty One of Jacob.
17 Instead of bronze I will bring gold,
And instead of iron I will bring silver,
And instead of wood, bronze,
And instead of stones, iron.
And I will make peace your administrators,
And righteousness your overseers.
18 ( AR ) Violence will not be heard again in your land,
Nor ( AS ) devastation or destruction within your borders;
But you will call your ( AT ) walls salvation, and your ( AU ) gates praise.
19 No longer will you have the ( AV ) sun for light by day,
Nor will the moon give you light for brightness;
But you will have the ( AW ) Lord as an everlasting light,
And your ( AX ) God as your [ e ] glory.
20 Your ( AY ) sun will no longer set,
Nor will your moon wane;
For you will have the Lord as an everlasting light,
And the days of your ( AZ ) mourning will be over.
21 Then all your ( BA ) people will be righteous;
They will ( BB ) possess the land forever,
The branch of [ f ] My planting,
The ( BC ) work of My hands,
That I may be ( BD ) glorified.
22 The ( BE ) smallest one will become a thousand,
And the least one a mighty nation.
I, the Lord , will bring it about quickly in its time.”
60 “Arise, ( A ) shine, for your light ( B ) has come,
and the glory ( C ) of the Lord rises upon you.
2 See, darkness ( D ) covers the earth
and thick darkness ( E ) is over the peoples,
but the Lord rises upon you
and his glory appears over you.
3 Nations ( F ) will come to your light, ( G )
and kings ( H ) to the brightness of your dawn.
4 “Lift up your eyes and look about you:
All assemble ( I ) and come to you;
your sons come from afar, ( J )
and your daughters ( K ) are carried on the hip. ( L )
5 Then you will look and be radiant, ( M )
your heart will throb and swell with joy; ( N )
the wealth ( O ) on the seas will be brought to you,
to you the riches of the nations will come.
6 Herds of camels ( P ) will cover your land,
young camels of Midian ( Q ) and Ephah. ( R )
And all from Sheba ( S ) will come,
bearing gold and incense ( T )
and proclaiming the praise ( U ) of the Lord .
7 All Kedar’s ( V ) flocks will be gathered to you,
the rams of Nebaioth will serve you;
they will be accepted as offerings ( W ) on my altar, ( X )
and I will adorn my glorious temple. ( Y )
8 “Who are these ( Z ) that fly along like clouds, ( AA )
like doves to their nests?
9 Surely the islands ( AB ) look to me;
in the lead are the ships of Tarshish, [ a ] ( AC )
bringing ( AD ) your children from afar,
with their silver and gold, ( AE )
to the honor ( AF ) of the Lord your God,
the Holy One ( AG ) of Israel,
for he has endowed you with splendor. ( AH )
10 “Foreigners ( AI ) will rebuild your walls,
and their kings ( AJ ) will serve you.
Though in anger I struck you,
in favor ( AK ) I will show you compassion. ( AL )
11 Your gates ( AM ) will always stand open,
they will never be shut, day or night,
so that people may bring you the wealth of the nations ( AN ) —
their kings ( AO ) led in triumphal procession.
12 For the nation or kingdom that will not serve ( AP ) you will perish;
it will be utterly ruined. ( AQ )
13 “The glory of Lebanon ( AR ) will come to you,
the juniper, the fir and the cypress together, ( AS )
to adorn my sanctuary; ( AT )
and I will glorify the place for my feet. ( AU )
14 The children of your oppressors ( AV ) will come bowing before you;
all who despise you will bow down ( AW ) at your feet
and will call you the City ( AX ) of the Lord ,
Zion ( AY ) of the Holy One ( AZ ) of Israel.
15 “Although you have been forsaken ( BA ) and hated,
with no one traveling ( BB ) through,
I will make you the everlasting pride ( BC )
and the joy ( BD ) of all generations.
16 You will drink the milk of nations
and be nursed ( BE ) at royal breasts.
Then you will know ( BF ) that I, the Lord , am your Savior, ( BG )
your Redeemer, ( BH ) the Mighty One of Jacob. ( BI )
17 Instead of bronze I will bring you gold, ( BJ )
and silver in place of iron.
Instead of wood I will bring you bronze,
and iron in place of stones.
I will make peace ( BK ) your governor
and well-being your ruler. ( BL )
18 No longer will violence ( BM ) be heard in your land,
nor ruin or destruction ( BN ) within your borders,
but you will call your walls Salvation ( BO )
and your gates Praise. ( BP )
19 The sun will no more be your light by day,
nor will the brightness of the moon shine on you,
for the Lord will be your everlasting light, ( BQ )
and your God will be your glory. ( BR )
20 Your sun ( BS ) will never set again,
and your moon will wane no more;
the Lord will be your everlasting light,
and your days of sorrow ( BT ) will end.
21 Then all your people will be righteous ( BU )
and they will possess ( BV ) the land forever.
They are the shoot I have planted, ( BW )
the work of my hands, ( BX )
for the display of my splendor. ( BY )
22 The least of you will become a thousand,
the smallest a mighty nation. ( BZ )
I am the Lord ;
in its time I will do this swiftly.” ( CA )
