God chooses Isaiah to be a prophet

6 In the year when King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord God. He was sitting high up, on a throne. The ends of his long coat filled the temple. 2 Above him there were seraphs. Each one had six wings. Two wings covered the seraphs' faces. Two wings covered their feet. With the other two wings they were flying.

3 The seraphs called out to one another. They said, ‘Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty! The whole earth is full of his great glory.’

4 When the seraphs spoke, the foundation of the temple shook. And the temple became full of smoke.

5 Then I said, ‘It is bad for me! My life is at an end! I have lips that are unclean. I live among people with lips that are unclean. With my own eyes I have seen the King, the Lord Almighty.’

6 Then one of the seraphs flew towards me. In his hand was a piece of burning coal. He had used a tool to take it from the altar. 7 He touched my mouth with the piece of coal. He said to me, ‘Look! This has touched your lips. It has taken away your sin. You are no longer guilty.’

8 Then I heard the voice of the Lord God. He said, ‘Is there anyone that I can send with my message? Who will go on our behalf?’ I said, ‘I am here. Send me!’

9 The Lord said, ‘Go! Tell my message to those people: [ a ]

“You will continue to listen,
but you will never understand!
You will continue to look,
but you will not see anything!”
10 Make them refuse to understand. Cause their ears to be deaf and their eyes to be blind. If you do not do that, they might use their eyes to see. They might use their ears to listen. They might use their minds to understand. Then they might turn back to me so that I would make them well again.’

11 Then I asked the Lord , ‘For how long will this be, Lord God?’

He replied,

‘It must continue until enemies destroy their cities.
Their houses will become a heap of stones
and nobody will live in them.
Their land will become useless
and nothing will remain there.
12 I will send all the people far away.
The whole land will be empty and useless.

13 Even if only one tenth part of the people remain in the land, enemies will continue to destroy it. It will be like they are cutting down a great oak tree. But the base of the tree with its roots will still be there. From the part that remains, a holy branch will grow.’

  1. 6:9 God was sending Isaiah to speak to the Israelite people in Jerusalem and in the other towns of Judah.

God Calls Isaiah to Be a Prophet

6 In the year that King Uzziah died, [ a ] I saw the Lord sitting on a very high and wonderful throne. His long robe filled the Temple. 2 Seraph angels stood around him. Each angel had six wings. They used two wings to cover their faces, two wings to cover their bodies, and two wings to fly. 3 The angels were calling to each other, “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord All-Powerful. His Glory fills the whole earth.” 4 The sound was so loud that it caused the frame around the door to shake, and the Temple was filled with smoke. [ b ]

5 I was frightened and said, “Oh, no! I will be destroyed. I am not pure enough to speak to God, and I live among people who are not pure enough to speak to him. [ c ] But I have seen the King, the Lord All-Powerful.”

6 There was a fire on the altar. One of the Seraph angels used a pair of tongs to take a hot coal from the fire. Then the angel flew to me with it in his hand. 7 Then he touched my mouth with the hot coal and said, “When this hot coal touched your lips, your guilt was taken away, and your sins were erased. [ d ]

8 Then I heard the Lord’s voice, saying, “Who can I send? Who will go for us?”

So I said, “Here I am. Send me!”

9 Then the Lord said, “Go and tell the people, ‘Listen closely, but don’t understand. Look closely, but don’t learn.’ 10 Confuse them. Make them unable to understand what they hear and see. If you don’t do this, they might really look with their eyes, hear with their ears, and understand with their minds. Then they might come back to me and be healed!”

11 Then I asked, “Lord, how long should I do this?”

He answered, “Do this until the cities are destroyed and all the people are gone. Do this until there is no one left living in the houses and the land is destroyed and empty.”

12 The Lord will make the people go far away, and there will be large areas of empty land in the country. 13 A tenth of the people will be allowed to stay in the land, but it will be destroyed again. They will be like an oak tree. When the tree is chopped down, a stump is left. This stump will be a very special seed that will grow again.

6 In the year that king Uzziah died I saw also the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and his train filled the temple.

2 Above it stood the seraphims: each one had six wings; with twain he covered his face, and with twain he covered his feet, and with twain he did fly.

3 And one cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory.

4 And the posts of the door moved at the voice of him that cried, and the house was filled with smoke.

5 Then said I, Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts.

6 Then flew one of the seraphims unto me, having a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with the tongs from off the altar:

7 And he laid it upon my mouth, and said, Lo, this hath touched thy lips; and thine iniquity is taken away, and thy sin purged.

8 Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, Here am I; send me.

9 And he said, Go, and tell this people, Hear ye indeed, but understand not; and see ye indeed, but perceive not.

10 Make the heart of this people fat, and make their ears heavy, and shut their eyes; lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and convert, and be healed.

11 Then said I, Lord, how long? And he answered, Until the cities be wasted without inhabitant, and the houses without man, and the land be utterly desolate,

12 And the Lord have removed men far away, and there be a great forsaking in the midst of the land.

13 But yet in it shall be a tenth, and it shall return, and shall be eaten: as a teil tree, and as an oak, whose substance is in them, when they cast their leaves: so the holy seed shall be the substance thereof.

Isaiah’s Vision

6 In the year of ( A ) King Uzziah’s death ( B ) I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, lofty and exalted, with the train of His robe filling the temple. 2 Seraphim were standing above Him, ( C ) each having six wings: with two each covered his face, and with two each covered his feet, and with two each flew. 3 And one called out to another and said,

( D ) Holy, Holy, Holy, is the Lord of armies.
The [ a ] ( E ) whole earth is full of His glory.”

4 And the [ b ] foundations of the thresholds trembled at the voice of him who called out, while the [ c ] ( F ) temple was filling with smoke. 5 Then I said,

( G ) Woe to me, for I am ruined!
Because I am a man of ( H ) unclean lips,
And I live among a ( I ) people of unclean lips;
For my eyes have seen the ( J ) King, the Lord of armies.”

6 Then one of the seraphim flew to me with a burning coal in his hand, which he had taken from the ( K ) altar with tongs. 7 He ( L ) touched my mouth with it and said, “Behold, this has touched your lips; and ( M ) your guilt is taken away and atonement is made for your sin.”

Isaiah’s Commission

8 Then I heard the ( N ) voice of the Lord, saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for Us?” Then ( O ) I said, “Here am I. Send me!” 9 And He said, “Go, and tell this people:

‘Keep on ( P ) listening, but do not understand;
And keep on looking, but do not gain knowledge.’
10 ( Q ) Make the hearts of this people [ d ] ( R ) insensitive,
Their ears [ e ] dull,
And their eyes [ f ] blind,
( S ) So that they will not see with their eyes,
Hear with their ears,
Understand with their hearts,
And return and be healed.”

11 Then I said, “Lord, ( T ) how long?” And He answered,

“Until ( U ) cities are devastated and without inhabitant,
Houses are without people
And the land is utterly desolate,
12 The Lord has ( V ) completely removed people,
And there [ g ] are many ( W ) forsaken places in the midst of the land.
13 Yet there will still be a tenth portion in it,
And it will again be subject to burning,
Like a terebinth or an ( X ) oak
Whose stump remains when it is cut down.
The ( Y ) holy seed is its stump.”

Isaiah’s Commission

6 In the year that King Uzziah ( A ) died, ( B ) I saw the Lord, ( C ) high and exalted, ( D ) seated on a throne; ( E ) and the train of his robe ( F ) filled the temple. 2 Above him were seraphim, ( G ) each with six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, ( H ) and with two they were flying. 3 And they were calling to one another:

“Holy, holy ( I ) , holy is the Lord Almighty; ( J )
the whole earth ( K ) is full of his glory.” ( L )

4 At the sound of their voices the doorposts and thresholds shook and the temple was filled with smoke. ( M )

5 “Woe ( N ) to me!” I cried. “I am ruined! ( O ) For I am a man of unclean lips, ( P ) and I live among a people of unclean lips, ( Q ) and my eyes have seen ( R ) the King, ( S ) the Lord Almighty.” ( T )

6 Then one of the seraphim flew to me with a live coal ( U ) in his hand, which he had taken with tongs from the altar. 7 With it he touched my mouth and said, “See, this has touched your lips; ( V ) your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for. ( W )

8 Then I heard the voice ( X ) of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? ( Y ) And who will go for us? ( Z )

And I said, “Here am I. ( AA ) Send me!”

9 He said, “Go ( AB ) and tell this people:

“‘Be ever hearing, but never understanding;
be ever seeing, but never perceiving.’ ( AC )
10 Make the heart of this people calloused; ( AD )
make their ears dull
and close their eyes. [ a ] ( AE )
Otherwise they might see with their eyes,
hear with their ears, ( AF )
understand with their hearts,
and turn and be healed.” ( AG )

11 Then I said, “For how long, Lord?” ( AH )

And he answered:

“Until the cities lie ruined ( AI )
and without inhabitant,
until the houses are left deserted ( AJ )
and the fields ruined and ravaged, ( AK )
12 until the Lord has sent everyone far away ( AL )
and the land is utterly forsaken. ( AM )
13 And though a tenth remains ( AN ) in the land,
it will again be laid waste. ( AO )
But as the terebinth and oak
leave stumps ( AP ) when they are cut down,
so the holy ( AQ ) seed will be the stump in the land.” ( AR )
