Hezekiah's mistake

39 At that time, Baladan's son, Merodach-Baladan, was the king of Babylon. Merodach-Baladan sent letters and a gift to Hezekiah. He had heard the news that Hezekiah had been ill, but he was now better. 2 Hezekiah was happy to meet the officers who came from the king of Babylon. Hezekiah showed them the places where he stored his valuable things. He showed them all his silver and gold things, his spices and very valuable olive oil. He also showed them all his weapons. Hezekiah showed them all his valuable things. There was nothing in his palace or in his whole kingdom that he did not show to the king of Babylon's officers.

3 Then Isaiah the prophet went to King Hezekiah. Isaiah asked the king, ‘What did those men say? Where did they come from?’ Hezekiah replied, ‘They came to me from Babylon, far away.’ 4 Isaiah asked, ‘What did they see in your palace?’ Hezekiah said, ‘They saw everything that is in my palace. I showed all my valuable things to them.’

5 Then Isaiah said to Hezekiah, ‘Listen to this message from the Lord Almighty:

6 “Understand this! One day, soldiers from Babylon will carry away all your valuable things. Everything that you and your ancestors have stored here until now will go to Babylon. They will leave nothing here. 7 Some of your own descendants will also go to Babylon. Soldiers from Babylon will take them away from here. Your descendants will become eunuchs in the king of Babylon's palace.” That is what the Lord says. ’

8 Hezekiah said to Isaiah, ‘The Lord 's message that you have spoken to me is good.’

But he was thinking, ‘While I am still alive, people will live safely without any trouble.’

Messengers From Babylon

39 At that time Merodach Baladan son of Baladan was king of Babylon. He sent some men with letters and a gift to Hezekiah when he heard that Hezekiah had been sick. 2 This made Hezekiah very happy, so he showed them all the valuable things in his storehouses. He showed them the silver, the gold, the spices, and the expensive perfumes. He showed them the building where he stored the weapons. He showed them everything in his treasuries and everything in his house and throughout his kingdom.

3 Then Isaiah the prophet went to King Hezekiah and asked him, “What did these men say? Where did they come from?”

Hezekiah said, “These men came all the way from Babylon just to see me.”

4 So Isaiah asked him, “What did they see in your house?”

Hezekiah said, “They saw everything in my palace. I showed them all my wealth.”

5 Then Isaiah said to Hezekiah, “Listen to this message from the Lord All-Powerful: 6 ‘The time is coming when everything in your house and everything your ancestors have saved until today will be carried away to Babylon. Nothing will be left!’ The Lord All-Powerful said this. 7 The Babylonians will take your own sons, and your sons will become officers [ a ] in the palace of the king of Babylon.”

8 Then Hezekiah told Isaiah, “This message from the Lord is good.” (Hezekiah said this because he thought, “There will be real peace and security during my lifetime.”)

Footnotes

  1. Isaiah 39:7 officers Or “eunuchs.” See “ eunuch ” in the Word List.

39 At that time Merodachbaladan, the son of Baladan, king of Babylon, sent letters and a present to Hezekiah: for he had heard that he had been sick, and was recovered.

2 And Hezekiah was glad of them, and shewed them the house of his precious things, the silver, and the gold, and the spices, and the precious ointment, and all the house of his armour, and all that was found in his treasures: there was nothing in his house, nor in all his dominion, that Hezekiah shewed them not.

3 Then came Isaiah the prophet unto king Hezekiah, and said unto him, What said these men? and from whence came they unto thee? And Hezekiah said, They are come from a far country unto me, even from Babylon.

4 Then said he, What have they seen in thine house? And Hezekiah answered, All that is in mine house have they seen: there is nothing among my treasures that I have not shewed them.

5 Then said Isaiah to Hezekiah, Hear the word of the Lord of hosts:

6 Behold, the days come, that all that is in thine house, and that which thy fathers have laid up in store until this day, shall be carried to Babylon: nothing shall be left, saith the Lord .

7 And of thy sons that shall issue from thee, which thou shalt beget, shall they take away; and they shall be eunuchs in the palace of the king of Babylon.

8 Then said Hezekiah to Isaiah, Good is the word of the Lord which thou hast spoken. He said moreover, For there shall be peace and truth in my days.

Hezekiah Shows His Treasures

39 ( A ) At that time Merodach-baladan son of Baladan, king of Babylon, sent letters and a gift to Hezekiah, for he heard that he had been sick and had recovered. 2 Hezekiah [ a ] was ( B ) pleased, and let them see all his treasure house, the ( C ) silver, the gold, the balsam oil, the excellent olive oil, his entire armory, and everything that was found in his treasuries. There was nothing in his house nor in all his realm that Hezekiah did not let them see. 3 Then Isaiah the ( D ) prophet came to King Hezekiah and said to him, “What did these men say, and from where did they come to you?” And Hezekiah said, “They came to me from a far ( E ) country, from Babylon.” 4 Then he said, “What have they seen in your house?” So Hezekiah [ b ] answered, “They have seen everything that is in my house; there is nothing among my treasuries that I have not let them see.”

5 Isaiah then said to Hezekiah, “Hear the ( F ) word of the Lord of armies, 6 ‘Behold, the days are coming when ( G ) everything that is in your house, and what your fathers have stored up to this day, will be carried to Babylon; nothing will be left,’ says the Lord . 7 ‘And some of your sons who will come from you, whom you will father, ( H ) will be taken away, and ( I ) they will become eunuchs in the palace of the king of Babylon.’” 8 ( J ) Then Hezekiah said to Isaiah, “The word of the Lord which you have spoken is good.” For he [ c ] thought, “For there will be peace and truth ( K ) in my days.”

Envoys From Babylon ( A )

39 At that time Marduk-Baladan son of Baladan king of Babylon ( B ) sent Hezekiah letters and a gift, because he had heard of his illness and recovery. 2 Hezekiah received the envoys ( C ) gladly and showed them what was in his storehouses—the silver, the gold, ( D ) the spices, the fine olive oil—his entire armory and everything found among his treasures. ( E ) There was nothing in his palace or in all his kingdom that Hezekiah did not show them.

3 Then Isaiah the prophet went to King Hezekiah and asked, “What did those men say, and where did they come from?”

“From a distant land, ( F ) ” Hezekiah replied. “They came to me from Babylon.”

4 The prophet asked, “What did they see in your palace?”

“They saw everything in my palace,” Hezekiah said. “There is nothing among my treasures that I did not show them.”

5 Then Isaiah said to Hezekiah, “Hear the word ( G ) of the Lord Almighty: 6 The time will surely come when everything in your palace, and all that your predecessors have stored up until this day, will be carried off to Babylon. ( H ) Nothing will be left, says the Lord . 7 And some of your descendants, your own flesh and blood who will be born to you, will be taken away, and they will become eunuchs in the palace of the king of Babylon.
