Words that cause us to hope in God

2 This is the message that appeared to Amoz's son, Isaiah, about Judah and Jerusalem.

2 This is what will happen in the last days. The mountain where the Lord 's temple is will continue to be there. It will be the most important mountain of all. It will be higher than all the hills around it. People from every nation will go there all the time.

3 As they come, people from many nations will say, ‘Come! We will go to the mountain of the Lord , Jacob's God. We will go to worship him at his temple. Then he will teach us how to live in a way that pleases him. We will be able to walk in his paths.’

At that time, Zion will be the place where people learn about what is right. Yes, in Jerusalem the Lord will teach people his message. [ a ]

4 God will be the judge between different nations. When they argue together, he will say who is right. They will take their swords and they will make them into ploughs. Their spears will become knives to cut their vines. Nations will no longer need weapons to attack other nations. They will not prepare to fight wars any more.

5 Jacob's family, come now! We need to live in the light that the Lord gives to us. [ b ]

The great day when the Lord will judge everyone

6 Lord , you have gone away from your people. They are Jacob's descendants. They are full of ideas from countries in the east. They use magic to learn about future times, as the Philistines do. They join hands with foreign people.

7 They are very rich and their land is full of silver and gold. They have many horses, and more chariots than you can count. 8 But their land is also full of useless idols. They worship things that they have made with their own hands. 9 People bend down low in front of their idols. They even lie flat on the ground!

Lord , do not forgive them!

10 Go up to the rocks in the hills! Find a hole in the ground where you can hide! Hide from the Lord 's great power, because he is coming to punish you! He rules with great authority!

11 The Lord will bring proud people down low. People who boast will have to stop. On that day, people will see that only the Lord is great.

12 Yes! The Lord Almighty will choose his great day. On that day, he will judge all the proud people who think that they are great. He will bring them all down very low.

13 The Lord will cut down the great cedar trees in Lebanon, and the oak trees in Bashan. 14 He will bring down the high mountains and the highest hills. 15 He will knock down all the strong towers and walls. 16 He will destroy the great ships that travel across the seas, and all the beautiful boats.

17 Like that, the Lord will bring proud people down low. People who boast will have to stop. On that day, people will see that only the Lord is great.

18 All the useless idols will be there no more.

19 People will run away to the caves in the hills. They will try to hide in holes in the ground. They will try to escape from the great power of the Lord , when he comes to judge everyone. They will see that he rules with great authority. People will be very afraid when he comes to punish the people on earth.

20 At that time, people will throw away their silver idols and their gold idols. They made those idols so that they could worship them. But now they will throw them into caves where rats and bats live.

21 The people themselves will look for caves and holes in the rocks where they can hide. They will try to escape from the Lord 's punishment. They will see that he rules with great authority. They will be afraid when he comes to judge the people on earth.

22 Do not trust people to help you. They are weak and they will all die one day. They are not strong enough to help you.

Footnotes

  1. 2:3 Zion was the part of the city of Jerusalem where the Lord 's temple was. Sometimes ‘Zion’ and ‘Jerusalem’ mean the same thing.
  2. 2:5 ‘Jacob's family’ means the Israelite people. God changed Jacob's name to Israel.

God’s Message to Judah and Jerusalem

2 Isaiah son of Amoz received this message about Judah and Jerusalem.

2 In the last days the mountain of the Lord ’s Temple
will be the highest of all mountains.
It will be raised higher than the hills.
There will be a steady stream of people from all nations going there.
3 People from many places will go there and say,
“Come, let’s go up to the mountain of the Lord ,
to the Temple of the God of Jacob.
Then God will teach us his way of living,
and we will follow him.”

His teaching, the Lord ’s message, will begin in Jerusalem on Mount Zion
and will go out to all the world.
4 Then God will act as judge to end arguments between nations.
He will decide what is right for people from many lands.
They will stop using their weapons for war.
They will hammer their swords into plows
and use their spears to make tools for harvesting.
All fighting between nations will end.
They will never again train for war.

5 Family of Jacob, let us follow the Lord .

6 Family of Jacob, you have abandoned your people. This is clear because they have been filled with bad influences from the East, [ a ] and now your people try to tell the future like the Philistines. They have completely accepted those strange ideas. 7 Jacob’s land has been filled with silver and gold from other places. There are many treasures there. His land has been filled with horses and many chariots. 8 His land is full of gods that the people bow down to worship. They made those idols themselves. 9 The people have become worse and worse. They have become very low, and you leaders did nothing to lift them up! [ b ]

10 You should be afraid of the Lord ! Go hide in the dirt and behind the rocks. Hide from his glorious power!

11 Proud people will stop being proud. They will bow down to the ground with shame, and only the Lord will still stand high.

12 The Lord All-Powerful has a special day planned when he will punish the proud and boastful people. They will be brought down. 13 They might be like the tall cedar trees from Lebanon or the great oak trees from Bashan, but they will be cut down. 14 They might be like the tall mountains and high hills 15 or like the tall towers and high walls, but they will be brought down. 16 They might be like great ships from Tarshish, [ c ] filled with such wonderful cargo, but they will be brought down.

17 At that time those proud people will fall. They will bow low to the ground, and only the Lord will stand high. 18 All the idols will be gone. 19 People will go into the holes in the ground and the cracks in the rocks because they fear the Lord and his great power as he stands to shake the earth.

20 At that time people will throw away their idols they made from gold and silver. They made these statues to worship, but they will throw them into holes in the ground where bats and moles live. 21 They will go down into cracks in the rocks and boulders because they are afraid of the Lord and his glorious power as he stands to shake the earth.

22 Stop trusting other people to save you. Do not think too highly of them; they are only humans who have not stopped breathing yet.

Footnotes

  1. Isaiah 2:6 East This usually refers to the area around Babylon.
  2. Isaiah 2:9 They … up Or “The people have become very low. Surely you will not forgive them!”
  3. Isaiah 2:16 ships from Tarshish This is probably a special type of cargo ship.

2 The word that Isaiah the son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem.

2 And it shall come to pass in the last days, that the mountain of the Lord 's house shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow unto it.

3 And many people shall go and say, Come ye, and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord , to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem.

4 And he shall judge among the nations, and shall rebuke many people: and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.

5 O house of Jacob, come ye, and let us walk in the light of the Lord .

6 Therefore thou hast forsaken thy people the house of Jacob, because they be replenished from the east, and are soothsayers like the Philistines, and they please themselves in the children of strangers.

7 Their land also is full of silver and gold, neither is there any end of their treasures; their land is also full of horses, neither is there any end of their chariots:

8 Their land also is full of idols; they worship the work of their own hands, that which their own fingers have made:

9 And the mean man boweth down, and the great man humbleth himself: therefore forgive them not.

10 Enter into the rock, and hide thee in the dust, for fear of the Lord , and for the glory of his majesty.

11 The lofty looks of man shall be humbled, and the haughtiness of men shall be bowed down, and the Lord alone shall be exalted in that day.

12 For the day of the Lord of hosts shall be upon every one that is proud and lofty, and upon every one that is lifted up; and he shall be brought low:

13 And upon all the cedars of Lebanon, that are high and lifted up, and upon all the oaks of Bashan,

14 And upon all the high mountains, and upon all the hills that are lifted up,

15 And upon every high tower, and upon every fenced wall,

16 And upon all the ships of Tarshish, and upon all pleasant pictures.

17 And the loftiness of man shall be bowed down, and the haughtiness of men shall be made low: and the Lord alone shall be exalted in that day.

18 And the idols he shall utterly abolish.

19 And they shall go into the holes of the rocks, and into the caves of the earth, for fear of the Lord , and for the glory of his majesty, when he ariseth to shake terribly the earth.

20 In that day a man shall cast his idols of silver, and his idols of gold, which they made each one for himself to worship, to the moles and to the bats;

21 To go into the clefts of the rocks, and into the tops of the ragged rocks, for fear of the Lord , and for the glory of his majesty, when he ariseth to shake terribly the earth.

22 Cease ye from man, whose breath is in his nostrils: for wherein is he to be accounted of ?

God’s Universal Reign

2 The word which ( A ) Isaiah the son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem.

2 Now it will come about that
( B ) In the last days
The ( C ) mountain of the house of the Lord
Will be established [ a ] as the chief of the mountains,
And will be raised above the hills;
And ( D ) all the nations will stream to it.
3 And many peoples will come and say,
“Come, let’s go up to the mountain of the Lord ,
To the house of the God of Jacob;
So that He may teach us [ b ] about His ways,
And that we may walk in His paths.”
For [ c ] the law will go out ( E ) from Zion
And the word of the Lord from Jerusalem.
4 And He will judge between the nations,
And will mediate for many peoples;
And ( F ) they will beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning knives.
( G ) Nation will not lift up a sword against nation,
And never again will they learn war.

5 Come, ( H ) house of Jacob, and let’s walk in the ( I ) light of the Lord .
6 For You have ( J ) abandoned Your people, the house of Jacob,
Because they are filled with influences from the east,
And they are soothsayers ( K ) like the Philistines.
They also [ d ] ( L ) strike bargains with the children of foreigners.
7 Their land has also been filled with silver and gold
And there is no end to their treasures;
Their land has also been filled with ( M ) horses,
And there is no end to their chariots.
8 Their land has also been ( N ) filled with idols;
They worship the ( O ) work of their hands,
That which their fingers have made.
9 So ( P ) the common person has been humbled
And the person of importance has been brought low,
But ( Q ) do not forgive them.
10 ( R ) Enter the rocky place and hide in the dust
( S ) From the terror of the Lord and from the splendor of His majesty.
11 The [ e ] ( T ) proud look of humanity will be brought low,
And the ( U ) arrogance of people will be humbled;
And the Lord alone will be exalted on that day.

A Day of Reckoning Coming

12 For the Lord of armies will have a day of reckoning
Against ( V ) everyone who is arrogant and haughty,
And against everyone who is lifted up,
That he may be brought low.
13 And it will be against all the cedars of Lebanon that are lofty and lifted up,
Against all the ( W ) oaks of Bashan,
14 Against all the ( X ) lofty mountains,
Against all the hills that are lifted up,
15 Against every ( Y ) high tower,
Against every fortified wall,
16 Against all the ( Z ) ships of Tarshish
And against all the delightful ships.
17 And the pride of humanity will be humbled
And the arrogance of people will be brought low;
And the Lord alone will be exalted on that day,
18 And the ( AA ) idols will completely vanish.
19 People will ( AB ) go into caves of the rocks
And into holes in the [ f ] ground
Away from the terror of the Lord
And the splendor of His majesty,
When He arises ( AC ) to terrify the earth.
20 On that day people will ( AD ) throw away to the moles and the ( AE ) bats
Their idols of silver and their idols of gold,
Which they made for themselves to worship,
21 In order to ( AF ) go into the clefts of the rocks and the crannies of the cliffs
Before the terror of the Lord and the splendor of His majesty,
When He arises to terrify the earth.
22 [ g ] ( AG ) Take no account of man, whose breath of life is in his nostrils;
For [ h ] ( AH ) why should he be esteemed?

The Mountain of the Lord ( A )

2 This is what Isaiah son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem: ( B )

2 In the last days ( C )

the mountain ( D ) of the Lord ’s temple will be established
as the highest of the mountains; ( E )
it will be exalted ( F ) above the hills,
and all nations will stream to it. ( G )

3 Many peoples ( H ) will come and say,

“Come, let us go ( I ) up to the mountain ( J ) of the Lord ,
to the temple of the God of Jacob.
He will teach us his ways,
so that we may walk in his paths.”
The law ( K ) will go out from Zion,
the word of the Lord from Jerusalem. ( L )
4 He will judge ( M ) between the nations
and will settle disputes ( N ) for many peoples.
They will beat their swords into plowshares
and their spears into pruning hooks. ( O )
Nation will not take up sword against nation, ( P )
nor will they train for war anymore.

5 Come, descendants of Jacob, ( Q )
let us walk in the light ( R ) of the Lord .

The Day of the Lord

6 You, Lord , have abandoned ( S ) your people,
the descendants of Jacob. ( T )
They are full of superstitions from the East;
they practice divination ( U ) like the Philistines ( V )
and embrace ( W ) pagan customs. ( X )
7 Their land is full of silver and gold; ( Y )
there is no end to their treasures. ( Z )
Their land is full of horses; ( AA )
there is no end to their chariots. ( AB )
8 Their land is full of idols; ( AC )
they bow down ( AD ) to the work of their hands, ( AE )
to what their fingers ( AF ) have made.
9 So people will be brought low ( AG )
and everyone humbled ( AH )
do not forgive them. [ a ] ( AI )

10 Go into the rocks, hide ( AJ ) in the ground
from the fearful presence of the Lord
and the splendor of his majesty! ( AK )
11 The eyes of the arrogant ( AL ) will be humbled ( AM )
and human pride ( AN ) brought low; ( AO )
the Lord alone will be exalted ( AP ) in that day. ( AQ )

12 The Lord Almighty has a day ( AR ) in store
for all the proud ( AS ) and lofty, ( AT )
for all that is exalted ( AU )
(and they will be humbled), ( AV )
13 for all the cedars of Lebanon, ( AW ) tall and lofty, ( AX )
and all the oaks of Bashan, ( AY )
14 for all the towering mountains
and all the high hills, ( AZ )
15 for every lofty tower ( BA )
and every fortified wall, ( BB )
16 for every trading ship [ b ] ( BC )
and every stately vessel.
17 The arrogance of man will be brought low ( BD )
and human pride humbled; ( BE )
the Lord alone will be exalted in that day, ( BF )
18 and the idols ( BG ) will totally disappear. ( BH )

19 People will flee to caves ( BI ) in the rocks
and to holes in the ground ( BJ )
from the fearful presence ( BK ) of the Lord
and the splendor of his majesty, ( BL )
when he rises to shake the earth. ( BM )
20 In that day ( BN ) people will throw away
to the moles and bats ( BO )
their idols of silver and idols of gold, ( BP )
which they made to worship. ( BQ )
21 They will flee to caverns in the rocks ( BR )
and to the overhanging crags
from the fearful presence of the Lord
and the splendor of his majesty, ( BS )
when he rises ( BT ) to shake the earth. ( BU )

22 Stop trusting in mere humans, ( BV )
who have but a breath ( BW ) in their nostrils.
Why hold them in esteem? ( BX )
