The King who brings peace

11 A descendant of Jesse will appear, like a new branch that grows from a tree stump. The roots of the tree will give new fruit! [ a ]

2 The Spirit of the Lord will be with him.

The Spirit will make him wise,
so that he understands things.
The Spirit will show him what is right,
and he will have the power to do it.
The Spirit will cause him to know the Lord
and to serve him truly.

3 To obey the Lord will make him very happy. He will not judge people because of what he sees with his eyes. He will not judge them because of what he hears about them with his ears.

4 But he will judge poor people with true justice. He will decide to do what is right for all the helpless people. He will have authority everywhere in the land. The words that he speaks will bring death to wicked people. 5 He will wear justice like a belt round his clothes. He will always be honest and true.

6 When he is king, wolves will live beside lambs! Leopards will lie down with young goats! Young cows and lions will feed together, and a young child will take care of them!

7 Cows and bears will feed together. Even their children will lie down side by side. Lions will eat grass, as cows do.

8 If a baby plays near the hole where a snake lives, he will be safe. A young child may even put his hand into the hole of a dangerous snake.

9 Nothing will hurt or destroy anything else anywhere on my holy mountain. Instead, people will know the Lord all over the earth, as water fills the whole sea.

10 On that day, King David's descendant, the root of Jesse, will appear. He will be like a clear sign to all nations. They will come to him, so that he leads them. The place where he lives as king will be wonderful.

11 And on that day, the Lord God will bring his people back once again. He will lift up his powerful hand to rescue his people who are still alive. He will bring them back from Assyria, Egypt, Pathros, Cush, Elam, Babylonia, Hamath and from countries near the sea.

12 The Lord will lift up a clear sign for the nations to see. He will bring together Israel's people that their enemies took away. Yes, he will bring back Judah's exiles from all over the earth. 13 Ephraim will no longer be jealous of Judah. Judah will no longer be Ephraim's enemy. [ b ] 14 But they will join together to attack the Philistines in the west. They will also attack the nations to the east of Israel. They will take their valuable things for themselves. They will win against the people of Edom and Moab. They will rule over the Ammonites.

15 The Lord will make the Sea of Egypt become dry. He will lift up his hand and he will send a strong wind to divide the Euphrates river. The river will become seven small streams. Then people can walk across it easily.

16 There will be a good road that comes from Assyria. The Lord 's people who remain will travel back home on it. It will be like the road that Israel's people travelled on when they left Egypt.

Footnotes

  1. 11:1 Jesse was the father of King David. The stump of a tree is the part that remains in the ground after the tree has been cut down. It still has roots that go into the ground.
  2. 11:13 Judah was the Israelite kingdom in the south. Ephraim was the Israelite kingdom in the north.

The King of Peace Is Coming

11 A small tree [ a ] will begin to grow from the stump of Jesse. [ b ] That branch will grow from Jesse’s roots. 2 The Lord ’s Spirit will always be with that new king to give him wisdom, understanding, guidance, and power. The Spirit will help him know and respect the Lord . 3 He will find joy in obeying the Lord .

This king will not judge people by the way things look. He will not judge by listening to rumors. 4-5 He will judge the poor fairly and honestly. He will be fair when he decides what to do for the poor of the land. If he decides people should be beaten, he will give the command, and they will be beaten. If he decides people must die, he will give the command, and those evil people will be killed. Goodness and fairness will be like a belt he wears around his waist.

6 Then wolves will live at peace with lambs, and leopards will lie down in peace with young goats. Calves, lions, and bulls will all live together in peace. A little child will lead them. 7 Bears and cattle will eat together in peace, and all their young will lie down together and will not hurt each other. Lions will eat hay like cattle. 8 Even snakes will not hurt people. Babies will be able to play near a cobra’s [ c ] hole and put their hands into the nest of a poisonous snake.

9 People will stop hurting each other. People on my holy mountain will not want to destroy things because they will know the Lord . The world will be full of knowledge about him, like the sea is full of water.

10 At that time there will be someone special from Jesse’s family. He will be like a flag that all the nations gather around. The nations will come to him and ask him what they should do. And the place where he is will be filled with glory.

11 At that time the Lord will again reach out and take his people who are left in countries like Assyria, North Egypt, South Egypt, Ethiopia, Elam, Babylonia, Hamath, and other faraway countries around the world. 12 He will gather the people of Israel and Judah who were forced to leave their country. They were scattered to all the faraway places on earth. But he will raise the flag as a sign for the other nations, and he will gather his people together again.

13 Then Ephraim will not be jealous of Judah, and Judah will have no enemies left. And Judah will not cause trouble for Ephraim. 14 But Ephraim and Judah will attack the Philistines. These two nations will be like birds flying down to catch a small animal. Together, they will take the riches from the people in the East. [ d ] Ephraim and Judah will control Edom, Moab, and the people in Ammon. [ e ]

15 Just as the Lord divided the Red Sea near Egypt, [ f ] he will raise his arm in anger over the Euphrates River and hit it. It will divide into seven small rivers. They will be so small that the people can walk across with their sandals on. 16 Then God’s people who are left in Assyria will have a way to leave. It will be just like the time God took the people out of Egypt.

  6. Isaiah 11:15 the Lord … Egypt Or “the Lord will dry up the tongue of the Sea of Egypt.”

11 And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots:

2 And the spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord ;

3 And shall make him of quick understanding in the fear of the Lord : and he shall not judge after the sight of his eyes, neither reprove after the hearing of his ears:

4 But with righteousness shall he judge the poor, and reprove with equity for the meek of the earth: and he shall smite the earth: with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips shall he slay the wicked.

5 And righteousness shall be the girdle of his loins, and faithfulness the girdle of his reins.

6 The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; and a little child shall lead them.

7 And the cow and the bear shall feed; their young ones shall lie down together: and the lion shall eat straw like the ox.

8 And the sucking child shall play on the hole of the asp, and the weaned child shall put his hand on the cockatrice' den.

9 They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain: for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord , as the waters cover the sea.

10 And in that day there shall be a root of Jesse, which shall stand for an ensign of the people; to it shall the Gentiles seek: and his rest shall be glorious.

11 And it shall come to pass in that day, that the Lord shall set his hand again the second time to recover the remnant of his people, which shall be left, from Assyria, and from Egypt, and from Pathros, and from Cush, and from Elam, and from Shinar, and from Hamath, and from the islands of the sea.

12 And he shall set up an ensign for the nations, and shall assemble the outcasts of Israel, and gather together the dispersed of Judah from the four corners of the earth.

13 The envy also of Ephraim shall depart, and the adversaries of Judah shall be cut off: Ephraim shall not envy Judah, and Judah shall not vex Ephraim.

14 But they shall fly upon the shoulders of the Philistines toward the west; they shall spoil them of the east together: they shall lay their hand upon Edom and Moab; and the children of Ammon shall obey them.

15 And the Lord shall utterly destroy the tongue of the Egyptian sea; and with his mighty wind shall he shake his hand over the river, and shall smite it in the seven streams, and make men go over dryshod.

16 And there shall be an highway for the remnant of his people, which shall be left, from Assyria; like as it was to Israel in the day that he came up out of the land of Egypt.

Righteous Reign of the Branch

11 Then a ( A ) shoot will spring from the ( B ) stem of Jesse,
And a ( C ) Branch from ( D ) his roots will bear fruit.
2 The ( E ) Spirit of the Lord will rest on Him,
The spirit of ( F ) wisdom and understanding,
The spirit of counsel and ( G ) strength,
The spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord .
3 And He will delight in the fear of the Lord ,
And He will not judge by what His eyes ( H ) see,
Nor make decisions by what His ears hear;
4 But with ( I ) righteousness He will judge the ( J ) poor,
And decide with fairness for the ( K ) humble of the earth;
And He will strike the earth with the ( L ) rod of His mouth,
And with the ( M ) breath of His lips He will slay the wicked.
5 Also ( N ) righteousness will be the belt around His hips,
And ( O ) faithfulness the belt around His waist.

6 And the ( P ) wolf will dwell with the lamb,
And the leopard will lie down with the young goat,
And the calf and the young lion [ a ] and the fattened steer will be together;
And a little boy will lead them.
7 Also the cow and the bear will graze,
Their young will lie down together,
And the ( Q ) lion will eat straw like the ox.
8 The nursing child will play by the hole of the cobra,
And the weaned child will put his hand on the viper’s den.
9 They will ( R ) not hurt or destroy in all My holy mountain,
For the ( S ) earth will be full of the knowledge of the Lord
As the waters cover the sea.

10 Then on that day
The ( T ) nations will resort to the ( U ) root of Jesse,
Who will stand as a ( V ) signal flag for the peoples;
And His ( W ) resting place will be [ b ] glorious.

The Restored Remnant

11 Then it will happen on that day that the Lord
Will again recover with His hand the second time
The ( X ) remnant of His people who will remain,
From ( Y ) Assyria, ( Z ) Egypt, Pathros, Cush, ( AA ) Elam, Shinar, Hamath,
And from the [ c ] ( AB ) islands of the sea.
12 And He will lift up a ( AC ) flag for the nations
And ( AD ) assemble the banished ones of Israel,
And will gather the dispersed of Judah
From the four corners of the earth.
13 Then the ( AE ) jealousy of Ephraim will depart,
And those who harass Judah will be eliminated;
Ephraim will not be jealous of Judah,
And Judah will not harass Ephraim.
14 They will ( AF ) swoop down on the slopes of the Philistines on the ( AG ) west;
Together they will ( AH ) plunder the [ d ] people of the east;
[ e ] They will possess ( AI ) Edom and ( AJ ) Moab,
And the sons of Ammon will be [ f ] subject to them.
15 And the Lord will [ g ] ( AK ) utterly destroy
The tongue of the [ h ] Sea of Egypt;
And He will ( AL ) wave His hand over the ( AM ) Euphrates River
With His scorching wind;
And He will strike it into seven streams
And make people walk over in dry sandals.
16 And there will be a ( AN ) highway from Assyria
For the ( AO ) remnant of His people who will be left,
Just as there was for Israel
On ( AP ) the day that they came up out of the land of Egypt.
