The Lord is angry with Israel

13 In past times, when the leaders of Israel spoke, the people were afraid. [ a ]
The people respected their leaders.
But the people became guilty when they worshipped Baal.
Because of that, they died.
2 Now the Israelites continue to do more and more sins.
They use metal to make idols for themselves.
They use clever skills to make idols from silver.
All their idols are only things that people have made themselves.
People offer sacrifices to the image of a calf.
They say, ‘Kiss the calf!’
3 So those people will soon disappear!
They will quickly disappear like mist or dew in the morning.
They will be like chaff that the wind blows away from a threshing floor.
They will be like smoke that disappears out of an open window. [ b ]

4 The Lord says,

‘I am the Lord your God.
I brought you out from Egypt.
You must not serve any other God.
No one else can save you except me.
5 I took care of you in the wilderness,
where it was very hot and dry.
6 I gave food to my people, so that they were not hungry.
But when they had enough to eat, they became proud.
As a result, they forgot about me. [ c ]
7 So I will attack them like a lion.
I will be like a leopard that waits beside the road.
It is ready to catch anything that goes that way.
8 I will attack them like an angry bear that has lost her children.
I will tear them into pieces.
I will eat them like a hungry lion.
I will attack them and kill them, like a wild animal.

9 I will destroy you, Israel.
There will be nobody to help you.
10 What has happened to your king?
He cannot save you!
Where are your rulers?
You asked me to give you rulers like the other nations have.
You said, “Give us a king and rulers.”
11 I was angry, but I agreed to give you a king.
Now I am even more angry and I will take your king away!

12 I have a record of Ephraim's sin.
Ephraim's people will certainly receive their punishment.
13 They will be in pain like a woman who is giving birth.
Her child is foolish. He refuses to be born!

14 Will I save these people from the power of death?
Will I rescue them from their graves?
Death, what diseases can you bring?
What can you do to hurt my people? [ d ]
I will not be kind to my people and forgive them.’

15 Among the other nations, Israel has been successful.
It has been like a plant that grows well.
But now the Lord will send trouble.
It will be like a strong east wind that comes from the desert.
Israel's wells and springs of water will become dry.
All the valuable things that Israel has stored will disappear.
16 Samaria's people are guilty and they will receive their punishment. [ e ]
They have turned against their God.
They will die in war.
Cruel enemies will kill their young children.
Soldiers will cut open their pregnant women.

  1. 13:1 Ephraim was the Israelite kingdom in the north. Judah was the Israelite kingdom in the south.
  2. 13:3 Mist is like a cloud near the ground. It makes small drops of water on the ground, called dew. These usually come early in the morning and they do not stay for a long time. Chaff and smoke also quickly disappear.
  3. 13:6 God gave the Israelites everything that they needed in the wilderness. See Exodus 16 . It was God who fed them and gave them water. But they turned away from him.
  4. 13:14 Hosea says that God will bring trouble and death to his people because of their sins. Paul uses these words in 1 Corinthians 15:55 . Because of Jesus' death, Paul says that the power of death can no longer hurt believers.
  5. 13:16 Samaria was another name for the northern kingdom, Israel. It was the capital city of Israel.

Israel Has Ruined Itself

13 “The tribe of Ephraim made itself very important in Israel. Ephraim spoke and people shook with fear. But Ephraim sinned by worshiping Baal, so he must die. 2 Now the Israelites sin more and more. They make idols for themselves. Workers make those fancy statues from silver, and then they talk to their statues. They offer sacrifices to them, and they kiss those calf idols. 3 That is why those people will soon disappear. They will be like a fog that comes early in the morning and then quickly disappears. The Israelites will be like chaff that is blown from the threshing floor. The Israelites will be like smoke that goes out a window and disappears.

4 “I have been the Lord your God since the time you were in the land of Egypt. You did not know any other god except me. I am the one who saved you. 5 I knew you in the desert—I knew you in that dry land. 6 I gave food to the Israelites, and they ate it. They became full and satisfied. They became proud, and then they forgot me.

7 “That is why I will be like a lion to them. I will be like a leopard waiting by the road. 8 I will attack them like a bear whose cubs were robbed from her. I will attack them and rip open their chests. I will be like a lion or other wild animal tearing and eating its prey.

Israel Cannot Be Saved From God’s Anger

9 “Israel, I helped you, but you turned against me. So now I will destroy you. 10 Where is your king? Can he save you in any of your cities? Where are your judges? You asked for them, saying, ‘Give me a king and leaders.’ [ a ] 11 I was angry, and I gave you a king. And when I became very angry, I took him away.

12 “Ephraim tried to hide his guilt.
He thought his sins were a secret,
but he will be punished.
13 His punishment will be like the pain of a woman giving birth.
He will not be a wise son.
The time will come for his birth,
and he will not survive.

14 “I will save them from the grave.
I will rescue them from death.
Death, where are your diseases?
Grave, where is your power?
I am not looking for revenge.
15 Israel grows among his brothers,
but a powerful east wind will come—the Lord ’s wind will blow from the desert.
Then his well will dry up.
His spring of water will be dry.
The wind will take away anything of value.
16 Samaria must be punished
because she turned against her God.
The Israelites will be killed with swords.
Their children will be torn to pieces,
and their pregnant women will be ripped open.”

13 When Ephraim spake trembling, he exalted himself in Israel; but when he offended in Baal, he died.

2 And now they sin more and more, and have made them molten images of their silver, and idols according to their own understanding, all of it the work of the craftsmen: they say of them, Let the men that sacrifice kiss the calves.

3 Therefore they shall be as the morning cloud and as the early dew that passeth away, as the chaff that is driven with the whirlwind out of the floor, and as the smoke out of the chimney.

4 Yet I am the Lord thy God from the land of Egypt, and thou shalt know no god but me: for there is no saviour beside me.

5 I did know thee in the wilderness, in the land of great drought.

6 According to their pasture, so were they filled; they were filled, and their heart was exalted; therefore have they forgotten me.

7 Therefore I will be unto them as a lion: as a leopard by the way will I observe them:

8 I will meet them as a bear that is bereaved of her whelps, and will rend the caul of their heart, and there will I devour them like a lion: the wild beast shall tear them.

9 O Israel, thou hast destroyed thyself; but in me is thine help.

10 I will be thy king: where is any other that may save thee in all thy cities? and thy judges of whom thou saidst, Give me a king and princes?

11 I gave thee a king in mine anger, and took him away in my wrath.

12 The iniquity of Ephraim is bound up; his sin is hid.

13 The sorrows of a travailing woman shall come upon him: he is an unwise son; for he should not stay long in the place of the breaking forth of children.

14 I will ransom them from the power of the grave; I will redeem them from death: O death, I will be thy plagues; O grave, I will be thy destruction: repentance shall be hid from mine eyes.

15 Though he be fruitful among his brethren, an east wind shall come, the wind of the Lord shall come up from the wilderness, and his spring shall become dry, and his fountain shall be dried up: he shall spoil the treasure of all pleasant vessels.

16 Samaria shall become desolate; for she hath rebelled against her God: they shall fall by the sword: their infants shall be dashed in pieces, and their women with child shall be ripped up.

Ephraim’s Idolatry

13 ( A ) When Ephraim [ a ] spoke, there was trembling.
He ( B ) exalted himself in Israel,
But through ( C ) Baal he incurred guilt and died.
2 And now they sin more and more,
And make for themselves ( D ) cast metal images,
Idols [ b ] ( E ) skillfully made from their silver,
All of them the ( F ) work of craftsmen.
They say of them, “Let the [ c ] people who sacrifice kiss the ( G ) calves!”
3 Therefore they will be like the ( H ) morning cloud
And like dew which [ d ] soon disappears,
Like ( I ) chaff which is blown away from the threshing floor,
And like ( J ) smoke from a chimney.

4 Yet I have been the ( K ) Lord your God
Since the land of Egypt;
And you were not to know ( L ) any god except Me,
For there is no savior ( M ) besides Me.
5 I [ e ] ( N ) cared for you in the wilderness,
( O ) In the land of drought.
6 As they had their pasture, they became ( P ) satisfied,
And as they became satisfied, their ( Q ) heart became proud;
Therefore they ( R ) forgot Me.
7 So I will be ( S ) like a lion to them;
Like a ( T ) leopard I will [ f ] lie in wait by the wayside.
8 I will confront them ( U ) like a bear deprived of her cubs,
And I will tear open [ g ] their chests;
I will also ( V ) devour them there like a lioness,
As a wild animal would tear them to pieces.

9 [ h ] It is to your own destruction, Israel,
That you are ( W ) against Me, against your ( X ) help.
10 Where then is your ( Y ) king,
That he might save you in all your cities;
And your ( Z ) judges, to whom you said,
“Give me a king and princes”?
11 I ( AA ) gave you a king in My anger,
And ( AB ) took him away in My wrath.

12 The guilt of Ephraim is wrapped up;
His sin is ( AC ) stored up.
13 The pains of ( AD ) childbirth come on him;
He is ( AE ) not a wise son,
For [ i ] it is not the time that he should ( AF ) delay at the opening of the womb.
14 Shall I ( AG ) ransom them from the [ j ] power of Sheol?
Shall I redeem them from death?
( AH ) Death, where are your [ k ] thorns?
Sheol, where is your sting?
( AI ) Compassion will be hidden from My sight.

15 Though he ( AJ ) flourishes among the [ l ] reeds,
An ( AK ) east wind will come,
The wind of the Lord coming up from the wilderness;
And his fountain will ( AL ) become dry
And his spring will dry up;
It will ( AM ) plunder his treasury of every precious article.
16 [ m ] Samaria will pay the penalty for her ( AN ) guilt,
Because she has ( AO ) rebelled against her God.
( AP ) They will fall by the ( AQ ) sword,
Their children will be [ n ] ( AR ) slaughtered,
And their pregnant ( AS ) women will be ripped open.

The Lord ’s Anger Against Israel

13 When Ephraim spoke, people trembled; ( A )
he was exalted ( B ) in Israel.
But he became guilty of Baal worship ( C ) and died.
2 Now they sin more and more;
they make ( D ) idols for themselves from their silver, ( E )
cleverly fashioned images,
all of them the work of craftsmen. ( F )
It is said of these people,
“They offer human sacrifices!
They kiss [ a ] ( G ) calf-idols! ( H ) ”
3 Therefore they will be like the morning mist,
like the early dew that disappears, ( I )
like chaff ( J ) swirling from a threshing floor, ( K )
like smoke ( L ) escaping through a window.

4 “But I have been the Lord your God
ever since you came out of Egypt. ( M )
You shall acknowledge ( N ) no God but me, ( O )
no Savior ( P ) except me.
5 I cared for you in the wilderness, ( Q )
in the land of burning heat.
6 When I fed them, they were satisfied;
when they were satisfied, they became proud; ( R )
then they forgot ( S ) me. ( T )
7 So I will be like a lion ( U ) to them,
like a leopard I will lurk by the path.
8 Like a bear robbed of her cubs, ( V )
I will attack them and rip them open;
like a lion ( W ) I will devour them—
a wild animal will tear them apart. ( X )

9 “You are destroyed, Israel,
because you are against me, ( Y ) against your helper. ( Z )
10 Where is your king, ( AA ) that he may save you?
Where are your rulers in all your towns,
of whom you said,
‘Give me a king and princes’? ( AB )
11 So in my anger I gave you a king, ( AC )
and in my wrath I took him away. ( AD )
12 The guilt of Ephraim is stored up,
his sins are kept on record. ( AE )
13 Pains as of a woman in childbirth ( AF ) come to him,
but he is a child without wisdom;
when the time ( AG ) arrives,
he doesn’t have the sense to come out of the womb. ( AH )

14 “I will deliver this people from the power of the grave; ( AI )
I will redeem them from death. ( AJ )
Where, O death, are your plagues?
Where, O grave, is your destruction? ( AK )

“I will have no compassion,
15 even though he thrives ( AL ) among his brothers.
An east wind ( AM ) from the Lord will come,
blowing in from the desert;
his spring will fail
and his well dry up. ( AN )
His storehouse will be plundered ( AO )
of all its treasures.
16 The people of Samaria ( AP ) must bear their guilt, ( AQ )
because they have rebelled ( AR ) against their God.
They will fall by the sword; ( AS )
their little ones will be dashed ( AT ) to the ground,
their pregnant women ( AU ) ripped open.” [ b ]
