3 So, Christian friends, think carefully about who Jesus is. Like us, God has chosen you to belong to him. We tell people that we believe in Jesus as the messenger that God has sent. He helps us as God's most important priest. 2 That is what God sent Jesus to do. Jesus did everything that God wanted, just like Moses. Moses served God well when he was the leader of God's people long ago. 3 We know that someone who builds a house is more important than the house itself. In the same way, we should praise Jesus more than we praise Moses, because Jesus is greater. 4 Every house has someone who built it. But God is the one who has built all things. 5 We say that Moses served God well, like a servant in God's house. He took care of all God's people. In this way, Moses showed clearly the message that God would speak later. 6 But Christ serves in God's house as a son, not as a servant. He is the leader of God's people today. And we are God's people. We belong to his house if we continue to believe in Christ. We must be brave. We must continue to show people clearly that we trust God. He will do what he has promised to do.
7 God's Holy Spirit says this:
‘You must listen when you hear God speak today.
8 Do not refuse to obey him.
Do not be like God's people many years ago.
When they travelled in the wilderness, they turned against me.
They wanted to see if I would punish them.
9 For 40 years your ancestors saw the great things that I did.
But still they did not obey me.
10 That is why I became angry with them.
I said, “They always want to do what is wrong.
They refuse to understand my message.”
11 Because of that, I promised to punish them.
Because I was angry with them, I said,
“They will never arrive in my special place of rest.” ’ [ a ]
12 So be careful, my Christian friends. Do not refuse to trust God. That would be a very bad thing to do. Do not turn away from the God who lives for ever. 13 Instead, help each other to be strong every day. Today, you can still hear God's message. While that is still true, do not refuse to obey God. Do not think that sin will not hurt you. That is a lie. 14 We must continue to trust Christ very well, as we did when we first believed in him. We must continue to trust him until the end of our lives. Then we will share in everything that is his. 15 We have seen what the Bible says:
‘You must listen when you hear God speak today.
Do not refuse to obey him.
Do not be like God's people many years ago,
when they turned against God.’
16 Who were those people who heard God speak? All of them were the people that Moses led away from Egypt. They heard God's message, but they refused to obey him. 17 Who was God angry with for 40 years? He was angry with those same people. They did what was wrong. So they died and their bodies remained in the wilderness. 18 God promised to punish them, because they refused to obey him. He said, ‘They will never arrive in my special place of rest.’
19 So we must be careful ourselves! Those people did not trust God. As a result, they never arrived in God's special place.
3 So, my brothers and sisters, those chosen by God to be his holy people, think about Jesus. He is the one we believe God sent to save us and to be our high priest. 2 God made him our high priest, and he was faithful to God just as Moses was. He did everything God wanted him to do in God’s house. 3 When someone builds a house, people will honor the builder more than the house. It is the same with Jesus. He should have more honor than Moses. 4 Every house is built by someone, but God built everything. 5 Moses was faithful as a servant in God’s whole house. He told people what God would say in the future. 6 But Christ is faithful in ruling God’s house as the Son. And we are God’s house, if we remain confident of the great hope we are glad to say we have.
7 So it is just as the Holy Spirit says:
“If you hear God’s voice today,
8 don’t be stubborn as you were in the past,
when you turned against God.
That was the day you tested God in the desert.
9 For 40 years in the desert, your people saw what I did.
But they tested me and my patience.
10 So I was angry with them.
I said, ‘Their thoughts are always wrong.
They have never understood my ways.’
11 So I was angry and made a promise:
‘They will never enter my place of rest.’” ( A )
12 So, brothers and sisters, be careful that none of you has the evil thoughts that cause so much doubt that you stop following the living God. 13 But encourage each other every day, while you still have something called “today. [ a ] ” Help each other so that none of you will be fooled by sin and become too hard to change. 14 We have the honor of sharing in all that Christ has if we continue until the end to have the sure faith we had in the beginning. 15 That’s why the Spirit said,
“If you hear God’s voice today,
don’t be stubborn as in the past
when you turned against God.” ( B )
16 Who were those who heard God’s voice and turned against him? It was all the people Moses led out of Egypt. 17 And who was God angry with for 40 years? He was angry with those who sinned. And their dead bodies were left in the desert. 18 And which people was God talking to when he promised that they would never enter his place of rest? He was talking to those who did not obey him. 19 So we see that they were not allowed to enter and have God’s rest, because they did not believe.
3 Wherefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our profession, Christ Jesus;
2 Who was faithful to him that appointed him, as also Moses was faithful in all his house.
3 For this man was counted worthy of more glory than Moses, inasmuch as he who hath builded the house hath more honour than the house.
4 For every house is builded by some man; but he that built all things is God.
5 And Moses verily was faithful in all his house, as a servant, for a testimony of those things which were to be spoken after;
6 But Christ as a son over his own house; whose house are we, if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm unto the end.
7 Wherefore (as the Holy Ghost saith, To day if ye will hear his voice,
8 Harden not your hearts, as in the provocation, in the day of temptation in the wilderness:
9 When your fathers tempted me, proved me, and saw my works forty years.
10 Wherefore I was grieved with that generation, and said, They do alway err in their heart; and they have not known my ways.
11 So I sware in my wrath, They shall not enter into my rest.)
12 Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God.
13 But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.
14 For we are made partakers of Christ, if we hold the beginning of our confidence stedfast unto the end;
15 While it is said, To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts, as in the provocation.
16 For some, when they had heard, did provoke: howbeit not all that came out of Egypt by Moses.
17 But with whom was he grieved forty years? was it not with them that had sinned, whose carcases fell in the wilderness?
18 And to whom sware he that they should not enter into his rest, but to them that believed not?
19 So we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief.
3 Therefore, ( A ) holy brothers and sisters , partakers of a ( B ) heavenly calling, consider ( C ) the Apostle and ( D ) High Priest of our ( E ) confession: Jesus; 2 [ a ] He was faithful to Him who appointed Him, as ( F ) Moses also was in all His house. 3 ( G ) For He has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses, by just so much as the builder of the house has more honor than the house. 4 For every house is built by someone, but the builder of all things is God. 5 Now ( H ) Moses was faithful in all [ b ] God’s house as ( I ) a servant, ( J ) for a testimony of those things ( K ) which were to be spoken later ; 6 but Christ was faithful as ( L ) a Son over His house— ( M ) whose house we are, ( N ) if we hold firmly to our ( O ) confidence and the boast of our [ c ] ( P ) hope.
7 Therefore, just as ( Q ) the Holy Spirit says,
“ ( R ) Today if you hear His voice ,
8 ( S ) Do not harden your hearts as [ d ] when they provoked Me ,
As on the day of trial in the wilderness ,
9 ( T ) Where your fathers put M e to the test ,
And saw My works for ( U ) forty years .
10 ( V ) Therefore I was angry with this generation ,
And said , ‘ They always go astray in their heart ,
And they did not know My ways ’;
11 ( W ) As I swore in My anger ,
‘ They certainly shall not enter My rest .’”
12 ( X ) Take care, brothers and sisters , that there will not be in any one of you an evil, unbelieving heart [ e ] that falls away from ( Y ) the living God. 13 But ( Z ) encourage one another every day, as long as it is still called “today,” so that none of you will be hardened by the ( AA ) deceitfulness of sin. 14 For we have become partakers of Christ ( AB ) if we keep the beginning of our [ f ] ( AC ) commitment firm until the end, 15 while it is said,
16 For who ( AE ) provoked Him when they had heard? Indeed, ( AF ) did not all those who came out of Egypt led by Moses? 17 And with whom was He angry for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, ( AG ) whose dead bodies fell in the wilderness? 18 And to whom did He swear ( AH ) that they would not enter His rest, but to those who were ( AI ) disobedient? 19 And so we see that they were not able to enter because of ( AJ ) unbelief.
3 Therefore, holy brothers and sisters, ( A ) who share in the heavenly calling, ( B ) fix your thoughts on Jesus, whom we acknowledge ( C ) as our apostle and high priest. ( D ) 2 He was faithful to the one who appointed him, just as Moses was faithful in all God’s house. ( E ) 3 Jesus has been found worthy of greater honor than Moses, ( F ) just as the builder of a house has greater honor than the house itself. 4 For every house is built by someone, but God is the builder of everything. ( G ) 5 “Moses was faithful as a servant ( H ) in all God’s house,” [ a ] ( I ) bearing witness to what would be spoken by God in the future. 6 But Christ is faithful as the Son ( J ) over God’s house. And we are his house, ( K ) if indeed we hold firmly ( L ) to our confidence and the hope ( M ) in which we glory.
7 So, as the Holy Spirit says: ( N )
“Today, if you hear his voice,
8 do not harden your hearts ( O )
as you did in the rebellion,
during the time of testing in the wilderness,
9 where your ancestors tested and tried me,
though for forty years they saw what I did. ( P )
10 That is why I was angry with that generation;
I said, ‘Their hearts are always going astray,
and they have not known my ways.’
11 So I declared on oath in my anger, ( Q )
‘They shall never enter my rest.’ ( R ) ” [ b ] ( S )
12 See to it, brothers and sisters, that none of you has a sinful, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God. ( T ) 13 But encourage one another daily, ( U ) as long as it is called “Today,” so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness. ( V ) 14 We have come to share in Christ, if indeed we hold ( W ) our original conviction firmly to the very end. ( X ) 15 As has just been said:
16 Who were they who heard and rebelled? Were they not all those Moses led out of Egypt? ( Z ) 17 And with whom was he angry for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose bodies perished in the wilderness? ( AA ) 18 And to whom did God swear that they would never enter his rest ( AB ) if not to those who disobeyed? ( AC ) 19 So we see that they were not able to enter, because of their unbelief. ( AD )
