Dinah

34 Dinah was the daughter of Leah and Jacob. One day she went out to visit the young women who lived near Shechem city. 2 Hamor the Hivite ruled that region. When his son, Shechem, saw Dinah, he took hold of her. Dinah could not get free and Shechem had sex with her. 3 He liked Dinah very much. He loved her. He spoke kind words to her so that she would love him too. 4 Shechem said to his father, Hamor, ‘I want to marry this girl. Please get her for me.’ 5 Jacob heard that Shechem had had sex with his daughter. At that time, Jacob's sons were taking care of his animals in the fields. So he did not do anything until his sons came home.

6 Shechem's father, Hamor, went to talk to Jacob about Dinah. 7 Jacob's sons now heard what had happened and they came home from the fields. They were very angry because Shechem had done such a bad thing. When he caught Dinah and had sex with her, he had brought shame on Jacob's family. It was a bad thing that nobody should ever do.

8 Hamor said to Jacob and his sons, ‘My son Shechem loves your daughter. Please give her to him so that she can be his wife. 9 There should be more marriages between your people and our people. Our men should marry your daughters and our daughters should become wives for your men. 10 Then you can live among us. You can live anywhere you want to in this land. You should live here, buy and sell things. Buy land and houses here.’ [ a ]

11 Then Shechem said to Dinah's father and brothers, ‘I would like to make you happy. So ask me for whatever you want and I will give it to you. 12 I will pay you the gifts that you ask for Dinah. It can be as much as you like. I will pay it all, because I want to have Dinah as my wife.’

13 Because of the bad thing that Shechem had done to Dinah, Jacob's sons decided to deceive him. And they deceived his father Hamor too. 14 They said, ‘We cannot give our sister to a man who has not been circumcised. We would be ashamed to do this. 15 If you want to marry Dinah, you must do one thing. You must circumcise all your males. Then you will become like us and we will agree for you to marry Dinah. 16 Then we will give you our daughters so that your men can marry them. And our men will marry your daughters. We will live among you, so that we become one people with you. 17 But your men must agree to be circumcised. If not, we will take our sister with us and we will leave this place.’

18 This idea seemed good to Hamor and his son Shechem. 19 Shechem's family respected him as an important person. So Shechem and his father quickly did what Jacob's sons told them. Shechem agreed to do it because he wanted very much to marry Dinah. 20 So Hamor and his son Shechem went to the gate of the city. They spoke to their men there. 21 They said, ‘Jacob's family are our friends. Let them live in our land, and buy and sell things. This land is big enough for them and us. We can marry their daughters, and they can marry our daughters. 22 But we must do the one thing that they have asked us to do. We must circumcise all our males in the same way that they do. If we do that, they will agree to live among us. 23 Then their things and their animals will all become our things. So we should agree to be circumcised, as they ask. Then they will live among us.’

24 All the men who were at the city gate agreed with Hamor and Shechem. So every male in the city was circumcised.

25 Three days after the men were circumcised, they still had a lot of pain. Then two of Jacob's sons attacked Shechem's men with their swords. None of the men were ready to fight. Jacob's two sons were Simeon and Levi, Dinah's brothers. They killed every male in the city. 26 They killed Hamor and his son Shechem. Then they took Dinah from Shechem's house and they left.

27 Jacob's other sons also saw that the men of the city were dead. So they took everything that they wanted from the city. They did that because it was the place where Shechem had done a very bad thing against their sister. 28 They took all the sheep, goats, cows and donkeys. They took everything that was in the city and in the fields near there. 29 They carried away every valuable thing for themselves. They also took all the men's wives and their children. They took everything from the houses in the city.

30 When they returned to Jacob, he said to Simeon and Levi, ‘You have brought bad trouble to me! The people who live in this land, the Canaanites and the Perizzites, will hate me. I will be like a bad smell to them. We do not have many men to fight for us. If the Perizzites and Canaanites join together and they attack us, they will destroy our whole family!’ 31 But Simeon and Levi replied, ‘Shechem should not have had sex with our sister as if she were a prostitute.’

  1. 34:10 Hamor wanted the Hivites to have some of Jacob's riches.

The Rape of Dinah

34 One day, Dinah, the daughter of Leah and Jacob, went out to see the women of that place. 2 She was seen by Shechem, the son of Hamor the Hivite, who ruled that area. Shechem took Dinah and raped her. 3 But he was so attracted to her that he fell in love and began expressing his feelings to her. 4 He told his father, “Please get this girl for me so that I can marry her.”

5 Jacob learned that Shechem had done this very bad thing to his daughter. But all his sons were out in the fields with the cattle. So he did nothing until they came home. 6 Then Shechem’s father, Hamor, came out to talk with Jacob.

7 In the fields Jacob’s sons heard the news about what had happened. They were very angry because Shechem had brought shame to Israel by raping Jacob’s daughter. They came in from the fields as soon as they heard about the terrible thing Shechem had done.

8 But Hamor talked to Dinah’s brothers and said, “My son Shechem wants Dinah very much. Please let him marry her. 9 This marriage will show we have a special agreement. Then our men can marry your women, and your men can marry our women. 10 You can live in the same land with us. You will be free to own the land and to trade here.”

11 Shechem also talked to Jacob and to Dinah’s brothers and said, “Please accept me. I will do anything you ask me to do. 12 I will give you any gift [ a ] you want if you will only allow me to marry Dinah. I will give you anything you ask, but let me marry her.”

13 Jacob’s sons decided to lie to Shechem and his father because Shechem had done such a bad thing to their sister Dinah. 14 The brothers said to them, “We cannot allow our sister to marry you because you are not yet circumcised. That would bring us shame. 15 But we will allow you to marry her if you do this one thing: Every man in your town must be circumcised like us. 16 Then your men can marry our women, and our men can marry your women. Then we will become one people. 17 If you refuse to be circumcised, we will take Dinah away.”

18 This agreement made Hamor and Shechem very happy. 19 Shechem was very happy to do what Dinah’s brothers asked.

Shechem was the most honored man in his family. 20 Hamor and Shechem went to the meeting place of their city. They spoke to the men of the city and said, 21 “These people want to be friends with us. We want to let them live in our land and be at peace with us. We have enough land for all of us. We are free to marry their women, and we are happy to give them our women to marry. 22 But there is one thing that all our men must agree to do. They must agree to be circumcised as they are. 23 If we do this, we will become rich from all their cattle and other animals. We should make this agreement with them so that they will stay here with us.” 24 All the men who heard this in the meeting place agreed with Hamor and Shechem. And every man was circumcised at that time.

25 Three days later the men who were circumcised were still sore. Two of Jacob’s sons, Simeon and Levi, knew that the men would be weak at this time. So they went to the city and killed all the men there. 26 Dinah’s brothers, Simeon and Levi, killed Hamor and his son Shechem. Then they took Dinah out of Shechem’s house and left. 27 Jacob’s sons went to the city and stole everything that was there because of what Shechem had done to their sister. 28 So the brothers took all their animals, all their donkeys, and everything else in the city and in the fields. 29 The brothers took everything those people owned. They even took their wives and children.

30 But Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, “You have caused me a lot of trouble. All the people in this place will hate me. All the Canaanites and the Perizzites will turn against me. There are only a few of us. If the people in this place gather together to fight against us, I will be destroyed. And all our people will be destroyed with me.”

31 But the brothers said, “Should we let these people treat our sister like a prostitute? They were wrong to do that to our sister!”

  1. Genesis 34:12 gift Or “dowry.” Here, the money a man paid for a wife.

34 And Dinah the daughter of Leah, which she bare unto Jacob, went out to see the daughters of the land.

2 And when Shechem the son of Hamor the Hivite, prince of the country, saw her, he took her, and lay with her, and defiled her.

3 And his soul clave unto Dinah the daughter of Jacob, and he loved the damsel, and spake kindly unto the damsel.

4 And Shechem spake unto his father Hamor, saying, Get me this damsel to wife.

5 And Jacob heard that he had defiled Dinah his daughter: now his sons were with his cattle in the field: and Jacob held his peace until they were come.

6 And Hamor the father of Shechem went out unto Jacob to commune with him.

7 And the sons of Jacob came out of the field when they heard it: and the men were grieved, and they were very wroth, because he had wrought folly in Israel in lying with Jacob's daughter: which thing ought not to be done.

8 And Hamor communed with them, saying, The soul of my son Shechem longeth for your daughter: I pray you give her him to wife.

9 And make ye marriages with us, and give your daughters unto us, and take our daughters unto you.

10 And ye shall dwell with us: and the land shall be before you; dwell and trade ye therein, and get you possessions therein.

11 And Shechem said unto her father and unto her brethren, Let me find grace in your eyes, and what ye shall say unto me I will give.

12 Ask me never so much dowry and gift, and I will give according as ye shall say unto me: but give me the damsel to wife.

13 And the sons of Jacob answered Shechem and Hamor his father deceitfully, and said, because he had defiled Dinah their sister:

14 And they said unto them, We cannot do this thing, to give our sister to one that is uncircumcised; for that were a reproach unto us:

15 But in this will we consent unto you: If ye will be as we be, that every male of you be circumcised;

16 Then will we give our daughters unto you, and we will take your daughters to us, and we will dwell with you, and we will become one people.

17 But if ye will not hearken unto us, to be circumcised; then will we take our daughter, and we will be gone.

18 And their words pleased Hamor, and Shechem Hamor's son.

19 And the young man deferred not to do the thing, because he had delight in Jacob's daughter: and he was more honourable than all the house of his father.

20 And Hamor and Shechem his son came unto the gate of their city, and communed with the men of their city, saying,

21 These men are peaceable with us; therefore let them dwell in the land, and trade therein; for the land, behold, it is large enough for them; let us take their daughters to us for wives, and let us give them our daughters.

22 Only herein will the men consent unto us for to dwell with us, to be one people, if every male among us be circumcised, as they are circumcised.

23 Shall not their cattle and their substance and every beast of their's be our's? only let us consent unto them, and they will dwell with us.

24 And unto Hamor and unto Shechem his son hearkened all that went out of the gate of his city; and every male was circumcised, all that went out of the gate of his city.

25 And it came to pass on the third day, when they were sore, that two of the sons of Jacob, Simeon and Levi, Dinah's brethren, took each man his sword, and came upon the city boldly, and slew all the males.

26 And they slew Hamor and Shechem his son with the edge of the sword, and took Dinah out of Shechem's house, and went out.

27 The sons of Jacob came upon the slain, and spoiled the city, because they had defiled their sister.

28 They took their sheep, and their oxen, and their asses, and that which was in the city, and that which was in the field,

29 And all their wealth, and all their little ones, and their wives took they captive, and spoiled even all that was in the house.

30 And Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, Ye have troubled me to make me to stink among the inhabitants of the land, among the Canaanites and the Perizzites: and I being few in number, they shall gather themselves together against me, and slay me; and I shall be destroyed, I and my house.

31 And they said, Should he deal with our sister as with an harlot?

The Treachery of Jacob’s Sons

34 Now ( A ) Dinah the daughter of Leah, whom she had borne to Jacob, went out to [ a ] visit the daughters of the land. 2 When Shechem the son of Hamor ( B ) the Hivite, the prince of the land, saw her, he took her and lay with her and raped her. 3 But [ b ] he was deeply attracted to Dinah the daughter of Jacob, and he loved the girl and [ c ] spoke tenderly to her. 4 So Shechem ( C ) spoke to his father Hamor, saying, “Get me this young woman as a wife.” 5 Now Jacob heard that he had defiled his daughter Dinah; but his sons were with his livestock in the field, so Jacob said nothing until they came in. 6 Then Hamor the father of Shechem went out to Jacob to speak with him. 7 Now the sons of Jacob came in from the field when they heard about it ; and the men were grieved, and they were very angry because he had done a [ d ] ( D ) disgraceful thing in Israel by [ e ] sleeping with Jacob’s daughter, for such a thing ought not to be done.

8 But Hamor spoke with them, saying, “The soul of my son Shechem longs for your daughter; please give her to him [ f ] in marriage. 9 And intermarry with us; give your daughters to us and take our daughters for yourselves. 10 So you will live with us, and ( E ) the land shall be [ g ] open to you; live and ( F ) trade in it and ( G ) acquire property in it.” 11 Shechem also said to her father and to her brothers, “Let me find favor in your sight, and I will give whatever you tell me. 12 Demand of me ever so much bridal payment and gift, and I will give whatever you tell me; but give me the girl [ h ] in marriage.”

13 But Jacob’s sons answered Shechem and his father Hamor with deceit, because he had defiled their sister Dinah. 14 They said to them, “We cannot do this thing, that is , give our sister to a ( H ) man who is uncircumcised, for that would be a disgrace to us. 15 Only on this condition will we consent to you: if you will become like us, in that every male of you will be circumcised, 16 then we will give our daughters to you, and we will take your daughters for ourselves, and we will live with you and become one people. 17 But if you do not listen to us to be circumcised, then we will take our daughter and go.”

18 Now their words seemed [ i ] reasonable to Hamor and Shechem, Hamor’s son. 19 The young man did not delay to do [ j ] this, because he was delighted with Jacob’s daughter. Now he was more respected than all the household of his father. 20 So Hamor and his son Shechem came to the ( I ) gate of their city and spoke to the people of their city, saying, 21 “These men are [ k ] friendly to us; therefore let them live in the land and trade in it, for behold, the land is [ l ] large enough for them. We will take their daughters [ m ] in marriage, and give our daughters to them. 22 Only on this condition will the men consent to us to live with us, to become one people: that every male among us be circumcised just as they are circumcised. 23 Will their livestock and their property and all their animals not be ours? Let’s just consent to them, and they will live with us.” 24 ( J ) All who went out of the gate of his city listened to Hamor and to his son Shechem, and every male was circumcised, all who went out of the gate of his city.

25 Now it came about on the third day, when they were in pain, that two of Jacob’s sons— ( K ) Simeon and Levi, Dinah’s brothers—each took his sword and came upon the city undetected, and killed every male. 26 They killed Hamor and his son Shechem with the edge of the sword, and took Dinah from Shechem’s house, and left. 27 Jacob’s sons came upon those killed and looted the city, because they had defiled their sister. 28 They took their flocks, their herds, and their donkeys, and that which was in the city and that which was in the field; 29 and they captured and looted all their wealth and all their little ones and their wives, even everything that was in the houses. 30 Then Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, “You have ( L ) brought trouble on me by ( M ) making me repulsive among the inhabitants of the land, among ( N ) the Canaanites and the Perizzites; and [ n ] ( O ) since my men are few in number, they will band together against me and [ o ] attack me, and I will be destroyed, I and my household!” 31 But they said, “Should he [ p ] treat our sister like a prostitute?”

Dinah and the Shechemites

34 Now Dinah, ( A ) the daughter Leah had borne to Jacob, went out to visit the women of the land. 2 When Shechem ( B ) son of Hamor ( C ) the Hivite, ( D ) the ruler of that area, saw her, he took her and raped her. ( E ) 3 His heart was drawn to Dinah ( F ) daughter of Jacob; ( G ) he loved ( H ) the young woman and spoke tenderly ( I ) to her. 4 And Shechem said to his father Hamor, “Get me this girl as my wife.” ( J )

5 When Jacob heard that his daughter Dinah had been defiled, ( K ) his sons were in the fields with his livestock; so he did nothing about it until they came home.

6 Then Shechem’s father Hamor went out to talk with Jacob. ( L ) 7 Meanwhile, Jacob’s sons had come in from the fields as soon as they heard what had happened. They were shocked ( M ) and furious, ( N ) because Shechem had done an outrageous thing in [ a ] Israel ( O ) by sleeping with Jacob’s daughter—a thing that should not be done. ( P )

8 But Hamor said to them, “My son Shechem has his heart set on your daughter. Please give her to him as his wife. ( Q ) 9 Intermarry with us; give us your daughters and take our daughters for yourselves. ( R ) 10 You can settle among us; ( S ) the land is open to you. ( T ) Live in it, trade [ b ] in it, ( U ) and acquire property in it. ( V )

11 Then Shechem said to Dinah’s father and brothers, “Let me find favor in your eyes, ( W ) and I will give you whatever you ask. 12 Make the price for the bride ( X ) and the gift I am to bring as great as you like, and I’ll pay whatever you ask me. Only give me the young woman as my wife.”

13 Because their sister Dinah had been defiled, ( Y ) Jacob’s sons replied deceitfully ( Z ) as they spoke to Shechem and his father Hamor. 14 They said to them, “We can’t do such a thing; we can’t give our sister to a man who is not circumcised. ( AA ) That would be a disgrace to us. 15 We will enter into an agreement with you on one condition ( AB ) only: that you become like us by circumcising all your males. ( AC ) 16 Then we will give you our daughters and take your daughters for ourselves. ( AD ) We’ll settle among you and become one people with you. ( AE ) 17 But if you will not agree to be circumcised, we’ll take our sister and go.”

18 Their proposal seemed good to Hamor and his son Shechem. 19 The young man, who was the most honored ( AF ) of all his father’s family, lost no time in doing what they said, because he was delighted with Jacob’s daughter. ( AG ) 20 So Hamor and his son Shechem went to the gate of their city ( AH ) to speak to the men of their city. 21 “These men are friendly toward us,” they said. “Let them live in our land and trade in it; ( AI ) the land has plenty of room for them. We can marry their daughters and they can marry ours. ( AJ ) 22 But the men will agree to live with us as one people only on the condition that our males be circumcised, ( AK ) as they themselves are. 23 Won’t their livestock, their property and all their other animals become ours? ( AL ) So let us agree to their terms, and they will settle among us. ( AM )

24 All the men who went out of the city gate ( AN ) agreed with Hamor and his son Shechem, and every male in the city was circumcised.

25 Three days later, while all of them were still in pain, ( AO ) two of Jacob’s sons, Simeon ( AP ) and Levi, ( AQ ) Dinah’s brothers, took their swords ( AR ) and attacked the unsuspecting city, ( AS ) killing every male. ( AT ) 26 They put Hamor and his son Shechem to the sword ( AU ) and took Dinah ( AV ) from Shechem’s house and left. 27 The sons of Jacob came upon the dead bodies and looted the city ( AW ) where [ c ] their sister had been defiled. ( AX ) 28 They seized their flocks and herds and donkeys ( AY ) and everything else of theirs in the city and out in the fields. ( AZ ) 29 They carried off all their wealth and all their women and children, ( BA ) taking as plunder ( BB ) everything in the houses. ( BC )

30 Then Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, “You have brought trouble ( BD ) on me by making me obnoxious ( BE ) to the Canaanites and Perizzites, the people living in this land. ( BF ) We are few in number, ( BG ) and if they join forces against me and attack me, I and my household will be destroyed.”

31 But they replied, “Should he have treated our sister like a prostitute? ( BH )
