16 Abram's wife, Sarai, had not given birth to any children. She had an Egyptian servant. The servant's name was Hagar. 2 Sarai said to Abram, ‘The Lord has not let me have any children. Go and sleep with my servant. Then if she gives birth, her children will be my family.’ Abram agreed to do this. [ a ]
3 Abram had now been living in Canaan for ten years. Sarai gave her Egyptian servant, Hagar, to him. She became like another wife for Abram.
4 Abram had sex with Hagar and she became pregnant. When Hagar knew that she was pregnant, she no longer respected Sarai.
5 Then Sarai said to Abram, ‘It is because of you that Hagar is now insulting me. I gave her to you so that you could have sex with her. Now she is pregnant and she does not respect me. The Lord will decide who is right, you or me.’
6 Abram said to Sarai, ‘Hagar is your servant and you have authority over her. Do to her whatever you think is right.’ Then Sarai caused trouble for Hagar. So Hagar ran away from Sarai.
7 The angel of the Lord found Hagar. She was by a spring of water in the desert. The spring was near the road to Shur. 8 The angel said, ‘Sarai's servant, Hagar, where have you come from? Where are you going?’ Hagar replied, ‘I am running away from Sarai. I am her servant.’
9 The angel of the Lord told Hagar, ‘Go back to Sarai. You are her servant and you must obey her.’
10 The angel also said, ‘I will make the number of your descendants become very many. They will be too many for people to count.’
11 The angel of the Lord said to Hagar,
‘Now you are pregnant and you will give birth to a son.
When you cried in pain, the Lord heard you,
so you must give your son the name “Ishmael”. [ b ]
12 Like a wild donkey, nobody will be able to rule him.
He will fight against everyone, and everyone will fight against him.
He will think that everyone is his enemy.
He will keep away from his brothers.’
13 When Hagar heard what the angel said, she said to herself, ‘I have seen the God who sees me!’ So she called the Lord ‘The God who sees me.’ 14 That is why they called the well in that place ‘Beer Lahai Roi’. [ c ] The well is between Kadesh and Bered.
15 After some time Hagar gave birth to a son. Abram was his father. Abram gave his son the name ‘Ishmael’. 16 Abram was 86 years old when Hagar gave birth to Ishmael.
16 Sarai was Abram’s wife, but she did not have any children. She had an Egyptian slave named Hagar. 2 Sarai told Abram, “The Lord has not allowed me to have children, so sleep with my slave. Maybe she can have a son, and I will accept him as my own.” Abram did what Sarai said.
3 So after living ten years in the land of Canaan, Sarai gave her Egyptian slave to Abram as a second wife. 4 Abram slept with Hagar, and she became pregnant. When Hagar realized this, she became very proud and began to feel that she was better than Sarai her owner. 5 Then Sarai said to Abram, “My slave girl now hates me, and I blame you for this. I gave her to you, and she became pregnant. Then she began to feel that she is better than I am. I want the Lord to judge which of us is right.”
6 But Abram said to Sarai, “She is your slave. You can do anything you want to her.” So Sarai was cruel to Hagar, and Hagar ran away.
7 The angel of the Lord found Hagar near a spring of water in the desert. The spring was by the road to Shur. 8 The angel said, “Hagar, Sarai’s slave girl, why are you here? Where are you going?”
Hagar said, “I am running away from Sarai.”
9 The angel of the Lord said to her, “Sarai is your owner. Go home to her and obey her.” 10 The angel of the Lord also said, “From you will come many people—too many people to count.”
11 Then the angel of the Lord said,
“Hagar, you are now pregnant,
and you will have a son.
You will name him Ishmael, [ a ]
because the Lord has heard that you were treated badly.
12 Ishmael will be wild and free
like a wild donkey.
He will be against everyone,
and everyone will be against him.
He will move from place to place
and camp near his brothers.”
13 The Lord talked to Hagar. She began to use a new name for God. She said to him, “You are ‘God Who Sees Me.’” She said this because she thought, “I see that even in this place God sees me and cares for me!” 14 So the well there was called Beer Lahai Roi. [ b ] It is between Kadesh and Bered.
15 Hagar gave birth to Abram’s son, and Abram named the son Ishmael. 16 Abram was 86 years old when Ishmael was born from Hagar.
16 Now Sarai Abram's wife bare him no children: and she had an handmaid, an Egyptian, whose name was Hagar.
2 And Sarai said unto Abram, Behold now, the Lord hath restrained me from bearing: I pray thee, go in unto my maid; it may be that I may obtain children by her. And Abram hearkened to the voice of Sarai.
3 And Sarai Abram's wife took Hagar her maid the Egyptian, after Abram had dwelt ten years in the land of Canaan, and gave her to her husband Abram to be his wife.
4 And he went in unto Hagar, and she conceived: and when she saw that she had conceived, her mistress was despised in her eyes.
5 And Sarai said unto Abram, My wrong be upon thee: I have given my maid into thy bosom; and when she saw that she had conceived, I was despised in her eyes: the Lord judge between me and thee.
6 But Abram said unto Sarai, Behold, thy maid is in thine hand; do to her as it pleaseth thee. And when Sarai dealt hardly with her, she fled from her face.
7 And the angel of the Lord found her by a fountain of water in the wilderness, by the fountain in the way to Shur.
8 And he said, Hagar, Sarai's maid, whence camest thou? and whither wilt thou go? And she said, I flee from the face of my mistress Sarai.
9 And the angel of the Lord said unto her, Return to thy mistress, and submit thyself under her hands.
10 And the angel of the Lord said unto her, I will multiply thy seed exceedingly, that it shall not be numbered for multitude.
11 And the angel of the Lord said unto her, Behold, thou art with child and shalt bear a son, and shalt call his name Ishmael; because the Lord hath heard thy affliction.
12 And he will be a wild man; his hand will be against every man, and every man's hand against him; and he shall dwell in the presence of all his brethren.
13 And she called the name of the Lord that spake unto her, Thou God seest me: for she said, Have I also here looked after him that seeth me?
14 Wherefore the well was called Beerlahairoi; behold, it is between Kadesh and Bered.
15 And Hagar bare Abram a son: and Abram called his son's name, which Hagar bare, Ishmael.
16 And Abram was fourscore and six years old, when Hagar bare Ishmael to Abram.
16 Now ( A ) Sarai, Abram’s wife, had not borne him a child, but she had ( B ) an Egyptian slave woman whose name was Hagar. 2 So Sarai said to Abram, “See now, the Lord has prevented me from bearing children . ( C ) Please have relations with my slave woman; perhaps I will [ a ] obtain children through her.” And Abram listened to the voice of Sarai. 3 And so after Abram had lived ( D ) ten years in the land of Canaan, Abram’s wife Sarai took Hagar the Egyptian, her slave woman, and gave her to her husband Abram as his wife. 4 Then he had relations with Hagar, and she conceived; and when Hagar became aware that she had conceived, her mistress was insignificant in her sight. 5 So Sarai said to Abram, “ ( E ) May the wrong done to me be upon you! I put my slave woman into your [ b ] arms, but when she saw that she had conceived, I was insignificant in her [ c ] sight. ( F ) May the Lord judge between [ d ] you and me.” 6 But Abram said to Sarai, “Look, your slave woman is in your [ e ] power; do to her what is good in your [ f ] sight.” So Sarai treated her harshly, and ( G ) she fled from her presence.
7 Now ( H ) the angel of the Lord found her by a spring of water in the wilderness, by the spring on the way to ( I ) Shur. 8 He said, “Hagar, Sarai’s slave woman, ( J ) from where have you come, and where are you going?” And she said, “I am fleeing from the presence of my mistress Sarai.” 9 So the angel of the Lord said to her, “Return to your mistress, and submit [ g ] to her authority.” 10 The ( K ) angel of the Lord also said to her, “ ( L ) I will greatly multiply your [ h ] descendants so that [ i ] they will be too many to count.” 11 The angel of the Lord said to her further,
“Behold, you are pregnant,
And you will give birth to a son;
And you shall name him [ j ] Ishmael,
Because ( M ) the Lord has heard your affliction.
12 But he will be a ( N ) wild donkey of a man;
His hand will be against everyone,
And everyone’s hand will be against him;
And he will live [ k ] ( O ) in defiance of all his brothers.”
13 Then she called the name of the Lord who spoke to her, “ [ l ] You are [ m ] a God who sees me”; for she said, “ ( P ) Have I even seen Him here and lived after [ n ] He saw me?” 14 Therefore the well was called [ o ] Beer-lahai-roi; behold, it is between ( Q ) Kadesh and Bered.
15 So Hagar bore a son to Abram; and Abram named his son, to whom Hagar gave birth, Ishmael. 16 Abram was ( R ) eighty-six years old when Hagar bore Ishmael to [ p ] him.
16 Now Sarai, ( A ) Abram’s wife, had borne him no children. ( B ) But she had an Egyptian slave ( C ) named Hagar; ( D ) 2 so she said to Abram, “The Lord has kept me from having children. ( E ) Go, sleep with my slave; perhaps I can build a family through her.” ( F )
Abram agreed to what Sarai said. 3 So after Abram had been living in Canaan ( G ) ten years, ( H ) Sarai his wife took her Egyptian slave Hagar and gave her to her husband to be his wife. 4 He slept with Hagar, ( I ) and she conceived.
When she knew she was pregnant, she began to despise her mistress. ( J ) 5 Then Sarai said to Abram, “You are responsible for the wrong I am suffering. I put my slave in your arms, and now that she knows she is pregnant, she despises me. May the Lord judge between you and me.” ( K )
6 “Your slave is in your hands, ( L ) ” Abram said. “Do with her whatever you think best.” Then Sarai mistreated ( M ) Hagar; so she fled from her.
7 The angel of the Lord ( N ) found Hagar near a spring ( O ) in the desert; it was the spring that is beside the road to Shur. ( P ) 8 And he said, “Hagar, ( Q ) slave of Sarai, where have you come from, and where are you going?” ( R )
“I’m running away from my mistress Sarai,” she answered.
9 Then the angel of the Lord told her, “Go back to your mistress and submit to her.” 10 The angel added, “I will increase your descendants so much that they will be too numerous to count.” ( S )
11 The angel of the Lord ( T ) also said to her:
“You are now pregnant
and you will give birth to a son. ( U )
You shall name him ( V ) Ishmael, [ a ] ( W )
for the Lord has heard of your misery. ( X )
12 He will be a wild donkey ( Y ) of a man;
his hand will be against everyone
and everyone’s hand against him,
and he will live in hostility
toward [ b ] all his brothers. ( Z ) ”
13 She gave this name to the Lord who spoke to her: “You are the God who sees me, ( AA ) ” for she said, “I have now seen [ c ] the One who sees me.” ( AB ) 14 That is why the well ( AC ) was called Beer Lahai Roi [ d ] ; ( AD ) it is still there, between Kadesh ( AE ) and Bered.
15 So Hagar ( AF ) bore Abram a son, ( AG ) and Abram gave the name Ishmael ( AH ) to the son she had borne. 16 Abram was eighty-six years old ( AI ) when Hagar bore him Ishmael.
