- Genesis Chapter 13
13 Abram left Egypt and he travelled north to the Negev. He took his wife and everything that belonged to him. Lot also went with him. 2 Abram had many valuable things. He had many cows, and much silver and gold.
3 Then Abram left the Negev and he went to different places. He arrived at Bethel. He returned to the place where he had put up his tent before. That place was between Bethel and Ai. 4 It was where Abram had first built an altar to worship the Lord .
5 Lot was travelling with Abram. Lot also had many cows, sheep and tents. 6 But the land could not grow enough food for all of them to eat. They could not all live together in the same place, because they had so many animals and people with them. 7 Abram's shepherds and Lot's shepherds began to quarrel with each other. (At that time, Canaanites and Perizzites also lived in the land.) [ a ]
8 Abram said to Lot, ‘We must not quarrel with each other. Your shepherds and my shepherds must not quarrel with each other. Remember that we belong to the same family. 9 Look everywhere! There is enough land for all of us. We must go different ways. If you go to the left, I will go to the right. If you go to the right, I will go to the left.’
10 Lot looked up and he saw the flat land of Jordan, as far as Zoar. He saw that it had lots of water, like the garden of the Lord . It was good land, like the land of Egypt. (This was before the Lord destroyed the cities there called Sodom and Gomorrah.) 11 So Lot chose for himself the valley of the Jordan River. He travelled towards the east. [ b ]
12 Abram stayed in the land of Canaan and he lived there. But Lot lived near the cities that were in the Jordan Valley. He put up his tents near the city of Sodom. 13 The people of Sodom were very wicked. They did not obey the Lord at all.
14 After Lot had gone away, the Lord said to Abram, ‘Stand where you are and look all around! Look to the north, the south, the east and the west. 15 I will give you all the land that you can see. I will give it to you and your descendants. It will belong to them for ever. 16 I will make your descendants become very many. Like the dust of the ground, people will not be able to count them all. 17 Go and travel round all this land. Look at it, because I am giving it to you!’
18 So Abram moved his tents. He went to live near the special oak trees of Mamre. That place is at Hebron. Abram built an altar to worship the Lord there.
13 So Abram left Egypt. He traveled through the Negev with his wife and everything he owned. Lot was also with them. 2 At this time Abram was very rich. He had many animals and much silver and gold.
3 Abram continued traveling around. He left the Negev and went back to Bethel. He went to the place between the city of Bethel and Ai, [ a ] where he and his family had camped before. 4 This was where Abram had built an altar earlier. So he worshiped the Lord there.
5 During this time Lot was also traveling with Abram. Lot had many animals and tents. 6 Abram and Lot had so many animals that the land could not support both of them together. 7 (The Canaanites and the Perizzites were also living in this land at the same time.) The shepherds of Abram and Lot began to argue.
8 So Abram said to Lot, “There should be no arguing between you and me or between your people and my people. We are all brothers. 9 We should separate. You can choose any place you want. If you go to the left, I will go to the right. If you go to the right, I will go to the left.”
10 Lot looked and saw the whole Jordan Valley. He saw that there was much water there. (This was before the Lord destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah. At that time the Jordan Valley all the way to Zoar was like the Lord ’s Garden. This was good land, like the land of Egypt.) 11 So Lot chose to live in the Jordan Valley. The two men separated, and Lot began traveling east. 12 Abram stayed in the land of Canaan, and Lot lived among the cities in the valley. Lot moved as far as Sodom and made his camp there. 13 The Lord knew that the people of Sodom were very evil sinners.
14 After Lot left, the Lord said to Abram, “Look around you. Look north, south, east, west. 15 All this land that you see I will give to you and your people who live after you. This will be your land forever. 16 I will make your people so many that they will be like the dust of the earth. If people could count all the particles of dust on earth, they could count your people. 17 So go. Walk through your land. I now give it to you.”
18 So Abram moved his tents. He went to live near the big trees of Mamre. This was near the city of Hebron. There he built an altar to honor the Lord .
13 And Abram went up out of Egypt, he, and his wife, and all that he had, and Lot with him, into the south.
2 And Abram was very rich in cattle, in silver, and in gold.
3 And he went on his journeys from the south even to Bethel, unto the place where his tent had been at the beginning, between Bethel and Hai;
4 Unto the place of the altar, which he had make there at the first: and there Abram called on the name of the Lord .
5 And Lot also, which went with Abram, had flocks, and herds, and tents.
6 And the land was not able to bear them, that they might dwell together: for their substance was great, so that they could not dwell together.
7 And there was a strife between the herdmen of Abram's cattle and the herdmen of Lot's cattle: and the Canaanite and the Perizzite dwelled then in the land.
8 And Abram said unto Lot, Let there be no strife, I pray thee, between me and thee, and between my herdmen and thy herdmen; for we be brethren.
9 Is not the whole land before thee? separate thyself, I pray thee, from me: if thou wilt take the left hand, then I will go to the right; or if thou depart to the right hand, then I will go to the left.
10 And Lot lifted up his eyes, and beheld all the plain of Jordan, that it was well watered every where, before the Lord destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, even as the garden of the Lord , like the land of Egypt, as thou comest unto Zoar.
11 Then Lot chose him all the plain of Jordan; and Lot journeyed east: and they separated themselves the one from the other.
12 Abram dwelled in the land of Canaan, and Lot dwelled in the cities of the plain, and pitched his tent toward Sodom.
13 But the men of Sodom were wicked and sinners before the Lord exceedingly.
14 And the Lord said unto Abram, after that Lot was separated from him, Lift up now thine eyes, and look from the place where thou art northward, and southward, and eastward, and westward:
15 For all the land which thou seest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed for ever.
16 And I will make thy seed as the dust of the earth: so that if a man can number the dust of the earth, then shall thy seed also be numbered.
17 Arise, walk through the land in the length of it and in the breadth of it; for I will give it unto thee.
18 Then Abram removed his tent, and came and dwelt in the plain of Mamre, which is in Hebron, and built there an altar unto the Lord .
13 So Abram went up from Egypt to ( A ) the [ a ] Negev, he and his wife and all that belonged to him, and Lot with him.
2 Now Abram was ( B ) very rich in livestock, silver, and gold. 3 And he went [ b ] on his journeys from the [ c ] Negev as far as Bethel, to the place where his tent had been at the beginning, ( C ) between Bethel and Ai, 4 to the place of the ( D ) altar which he had made there previously; and there Abram called on the name of the Lord . 5 Now ( E ) Lot, who went with Abram, also had flocks, herds, and tents. 6 And ( F ) the land could not [ d ] support both of them [ e ] while living together, ( G ) for their possessions were so great that they were not able to remain together. 7 ( H ) And there was strife between the herdsmen of Abram’s livestock and the herdsmen of Lot’s livestock. Now ( I ) the Canaanites and the Perizzites were living in the land at that time.
8 ( J ) So Abram said to Lot, “Please let there be no strife between you and me, nor between my herdsmen and your herdsmen, for we are relatives! 9 Is the entire land not before you? Please separate from me; if you choose the left, then I will go to the right; or if you choose the right, then I will go to the left.” 10 Lot raised his eyes and saw all the [ f ] vicinity of the ( K ) Jordan, that it was well watered everywhere— this was before the Lord ( L ) destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah—like ( M ) the garden of the Lord , ( N ) like the land of Egypt [ g ] going toward ( O ) Zoar. 11 So Lot chose for himself all the [ h ] vicinity of the Jordan, and Lot journeyed eastward. So they separated from each other. 12 Abram [ i ] settled in the land of Canaan, while Lot [ j ] settled in ( P ) the cities of the [ k ] vicinity of the Jordan , and moved his tents as far as Sodom. 13 Now ( Q ) the men of Sodom were [ l ] exceedingly wicked ( R ) sinners against the Lord .
14 The Lord said to Abram, after Lot had separated from him, “ ( S ) Now raise your eyes and look from the place where you are, ( T ) northward and southward, and eastward and westward; 15 ( U ) for all the land which you see ( V ) I will give to you and to your [ m ] descendants forever. 16 I will make your [ n ] descendants ( W ) as plentiful as the dust of the earth, so that if anyone can count the dust of the earth, then your [ o ] descendants could also be counted. 17 Arise, ( X ) walk about in the land through its length and width; for ( Y ) I will give it to you.” 18 Then Abram moved his tent and came and lived by the [ p ] ( Z ) oaks of Mamre, which are in Hebron; and there he built ( AA ) an altar to the Lord .
13 So Abram went up from Egypt ( A ) to the Negev, ( B ) with his wife and everything he had, and Lot ( C ) went with him. 2 Abram had become very wealthy ( D ) in livestock ( E ) and in silver and gold.
3 From the Negev ( F ) he went from place to place until he came to Bethel, ( G ) to the place between Bethel and Ai ( H ) where his tent had been earlier 4 and where he had first built an altar. ( I ) There Abram called on the name of the Lord . ( J )
5 Now Lot, ( K ) who was moving about with Abram, also had flocks and herds and tents. 6 But the land could not support them while they stayed together, for their possessions were so great that they were not able to stay together. ( L ) 7 And quarreling ( M ) arose between Abram’s herders and Lot’s. The Canaanites ( N ) and Perizzites ( O ) were also living in the land ( P ) at that time.
8 So Abram said to Lot, ( Q ) “Let’s not have any quarreling between you and me, ( R ) or between your herders and mine, for we are close relatives. ( S ) 9 Is not the whole land before you? Let’s part company. If you go to the left, I’ll go to the right; if you go to the right, I’ll go to the left.” ( T )
10 Lot looked around and saw that the whole plain ( U ) of the Jordan toward Zoar ( V ) was well watered, like the garden of the Lord , ( W ) like the land of Egypt. ( X ) (This was before the Lord destroyed Sodom ( Y ) and Gomorrah.) ( Z ) 11 So Lot chose for himself the whole plain of the Jordan and set out toward the east. The two men parted company: 12 Abram lived in the land of Canaan, ( AA ) while Lot ( AB ) lived among the cities of the plain ( AC ) and pitched his tents near Sodom. ( AD ) 13 Now the people of Sodom ( AE ) were wicked and were sinning greatly against the Lord . ( AF )
14 The Lord said to Abram after Lot had parted from him, “Look around from where you are, to the north and south, to the east and west. ( AG ) 15 All the land that you see I will give to you and your offspring [ a ] forever. ( AH ) 16 I will make your offspring like the dust of the earth, so that if anyone could count the dust, then your offspring could be counted. ( AI ) 17 Go, walk through the length and breadth of the land, ( AJ ) for I am giving it to you.” ( AK )
18 So Abram went to live near the great trees of Mamre ( AL ) at Hebron, ( AM ) where he pitched his tents. There he built an altar to the Lord . ( AN )
