God makes the earth

1 In the beginning, God made the heavens and the earth. 2 The earth was without shape and it was empty. Deep water covered the earth and everywhere was dark. The Spirit of God moved above the water. [ a ]

3 God said, ‘There will be light!’

And there was light.

4 God saw that the light was good.

He caused the light and the dark to be separate.

5 God called the light ‘day’. He called the dark ‘night’.

Evening passed and then it was morning.

That was the first day. [ b ]

6 Then God said, ‘A wide space will appear between the waters. So the waters will be in two separate places.’

7 So God made this wide space. He made the water under the space separate from the water that was above it. What God said happened.

8 God called the wide space ‘sky’.

Evening passed and then it was morning.

That was the second day.

9 God said, ‘The water that is under the sky will come together in one place. Then dry ground will appear.’

And what God said happened.

10 God called the dry ground ‘land’. He called the water that had come together ‘sea’.

God looked at what he had made. He saw that it was good.

11 Then God said, ‘The land will cause plants to grow. There will be plants with their seeds and trees with their fruits. Each kind of plant and tree will have its own seeds and fruits.’

And what God said happened.

12 All kinds of plants and trees began to grow in the ground. The plants made seeds. The trees made fruits with seeds in them. Each plant made its own kind of seeds.

God looked at what he had made. He saw that it was good.

13 Evening passed and then it was morning.

That was the third day.

14 God said, ‘There will be lights all across the sky. [ c ] They will make the day different from the night. They will show the seasons, days and years. 15 The lights in the sky will give light to the earth.’

And what God said happened.

16 God made two great lights. The brighter light ruled over the day. The less bright light ruled over the night. God also made the stars.

17 God put all these lights in the sky to shine their light on the earth.

18 They were to rule over the day and night. They were to make the time of light separate from the time of dark.

God looked at what he had made. He saw that it was good.

19 Evening passed and then it was morning.

That was the fourth day.

20 God said, ‘The waters will become full with many living things. Birds will appear and fly above the earth, all across the sky.’

21 God made big animals to live in the sea. He made every different kind of living thing that filled the sea. He made every different kind of bird to fly in the sky.

God looked at what he had made. He saw that it was good.

22 God blessed the animals and the birds. He said to them, ‘Give birth to many young ones, so that you grow in number. Fill all the water in the seas. The birds also should become very many, all across the earth.’ [ d ]

23 Evening passed and then it was morning.

That was the fifth day.

24 God said, ‘Different kinds of animals will now appear on the land. There will be farm animals and wild animals. There will also be other small animals that move along the ground. There will be many kinds of animals and each kind will be different.’ [ e ]

And what God said happened.

25 God made the different kinds of wild animals and the different kinds of farm animals. He made all the different kinds of animals that move along the ground.

God looked at what he had made. He saw that it was good.

26 Then God said, ‘We will make humans so that they are very much like us. [ f ] They will rule over the fish in the sea and over the birds in the sky. They will rule over the farm animals. They will rule over the whole earth and all the animals that move along the ground.’

27 God made humans.
He made them to be like himself.
He made some of them males and some of them females.

28 God blessed them. He said to them, ‘Give birth to children. Grow in number. Fill the earth and rule over it. Rule over the fish in the sea. Rule over the birds in the sky. Rule over every different kind of living animal that moves along the ground.’ [ g ]

29 Then God said, ‘Listen! I now give to you every plant on the earth as your food. I give you every plant that has seeds in it. I give you every tree that has fruit with a seed in it. I give them to you for your food.

30 I give to the animals green plants for their food. It will be food for all the animals on the earth, all the birds in the sky and all the animals that move along the ground. Everything that has life may eat every kind of green plant.’

And what God said happened.

31 God looked at everything that he had made. He saw that it was very good.

Evening passed. And then it was morning.

That was the sixth day.

Footnotes

  1. 1:2 God was present before he made the universe. He made everything.
  2. 1:5 Light appeared when it was morning. It was dark at night. One day is a time of light and a time of dark.
  3. 1:14 ‘Lights’ means bright things that shine.
  4. 1:22 ‘Birds’ here may include any living thing that can fly, for example bats and insects.
  5. 1:24 Farm animals are animals that usually live in a village or on a farm. People take care of them and they may use their milk or their meat as food.
  6. 1:26 When God speaks about himself as ‘us’, he is speaking as the three persons of God. They are God the Father, God the Son (Jesus) and God the Holy Spirit. God was there as all three persons when he made the universe.
  7. 1:28 God told the man and the woman to rule over the earth. This means that they have authority over the earth and everything in it. It also means that they must take care of everything.

The Beginning of the World

1 God created the sky and the earth. At first, 2 the earth was completely empty. There was nothing on the earth. Darkness covered the ocean, and God’s Spirit moved over [ a ] the water.

The First Day—Light

3 Then God said, “Let there be light!” And light began to shine. [ b ] 4 He saw the light, and he knew that it was good. Then he separated the light from the darkness. 5 God named the light “day,” and he named the darkness “night.”

There was evening, and then there was morning. This was the first day.

The Second Day—Sky

6 Then God said, “Let there be a space [ c ] to separate the water into two parts!” 7 So God made the space and separated the water. Some of the water was above it, and some of the water was below it. 8 God named that space “sky.” There was evening, and then there was morning. This was the second day.

The Third Day—Dry Land and Plants

9 Then God said, “Let the water under the sky be gathered together so that the dry land will appear.” And it happened. 10 God named the dry land “earth,” and he named the water that was gathered together “seas.” And God saw that this was good.

11 Then God said, “Let the earth grow grass, plants that make grain, and fruit trees. The fruit trees will make fruit with seeds in it. And each plant will make its own kind of seed. Let these plants grow on the earth.” And it happened. 12 The earth grew grass and plants that made grain. And it grew trees that made fruit with seeds in it. Every plant made its own kind of seeds. And God saw that this was good.

13 There was evening, and then there was morning. This was the third day.

The Fourth Day—Sun, Moon, and Stars

14 Then God said, “Let there be lights in the sky. These lights will separate the days from the nights. They will be used for signs to show when special meetings [ d ] begin and to show the days and years. 15 They will be in the sky to shine light on the earth.” And it happened.

16 So God made the two large lights. He made the larger light to rule during the day and the smaller light to rule during the night. He also made the stars. 17 God put these lights in the sky to shine on the earth. 18 He put them in the sky to rule over the day and over the night. They separated the light from the darkness. And God saw that this was good.

19 There was evening, and then there was morning. This was the fourth day.

The Fifth Day—Fish and Birds

20 Then God said, “Let the water be filled with many living things, and let there be birds to fly in the air over the earth.” 21 So God created the large sea animals. [ e ] He created all the many living things in the sea and every kind of bird that flies in the air. And God saw that this was good.

22 God blessed all the living things in the sea and told them to have many babies and fill the seas. And he blessed the birds on land and told them to have many more babies.

23 There was evening, and then there was morning. This was the fifth day.

The Sixth Day—Land Animals and People

24 Then God said, “Let the earth produce many kinds of living things. Let there be many different kinds of animals. Let there be large animals and small crawling animals of every kind. And let all these animals produce more animals.” And all these things happened.

25 So God made every kind of animal. He made the wild animals, the tame animals, and all the small crawling things. And God saw that this was good.

26 Then God said, “Now let’s make humans [ f ] who will be like us. [ g ] They will rule over all the fish in the sea and the birds in the air. They will rule over all the large animals and all the little things that crawl on the earth.”

27 So God created humans in his own image. He created them to be like himself. [ h ] He created them male and female. 28 God blessed them and said to them, “Have many children. Fill the earth and take control of it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the air. Rule over every living thing that moves on the earth.”

29 God said, “I am giving you all the grain bearing plants and all the fruit trees. These trees make fruit with seeds in it. This grain and fruit will be your food. 30 And I am giving all the green plants to the animals. These green plants will be their food. Every animal on earth, every bird in the air, and all the little things that crawl on the earth will eat that food.” And all these things happened.

31 God looked at everything he had made. And he saw that everything was very good.

There was evening, and then there was morning. This was the sixth day.

Footnotes

  1. Genesis 1:2 moved over The Hebrew word means “to fly over” or “to swoop down,” like a bird flying over its nest to protect its babies.
  2. Genesis 1:3 Or “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. While 2 the earth had no special shape, and darkness covered the ocean, and God’s Spirit hovered over the water, 3 God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light.” Or “When God began to create the sky and the earth, 2 while the earth was completely empty, and darkness covered the ocean, and a powerful wind blew over the water, 3 God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light.”
  3. Genesis 1:6 space Or “firmament.” The Hebrew word can refer to a piece of metal that has been hammered into the shape of a bowl.
  4. Genesis 1:14 special meetings The Israelites used the sun and moon to decide when the months and years began. Many Israelite festivals and special meetings began at the time of the new moon or full moon.
  5. Genesis 1:21 large sea animals Or “sea monsters.”
  6. Genesis 1:26 humans The Hebrew word means “man,” “people,” or the name “Adam.” It is like the word meaning “earth” or “red clay.”
  7. Genesis 1:26 Now let’s make … like us Or “Now let’s make humans in our image and in our likeness.”
  8. Genesis 1:27 So God created humans … himself Or “So God created them in his image. In the image of God he created them.” Compare Gen. 5:1, 3.

1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

2 And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.

3 And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.

4 And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness.

5 And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.

6 And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.

7 And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so.

8 And God called the firmament Heaven. And the evening and the morning were the second day.

9 And God said, Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry land appear: and it was so.

10 And God called the dry land Earth; and the gathering together of the waters called he Seas: and God saw that it was good.

11 And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so.

12 And the earth brought forth grass, and herb yielding seed after his kind, and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed was in itself, after his kind: and God saw that it was good.

13 And the evening and the morning were the third day.

14 And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years:

15 And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so.

16 And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also.

17 And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth,

18 And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good.

19 And the evening and the morning were the fourth day.

20 And God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life, and fowl that may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven.

21 And God created great whales, and every living creature that moveth, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind: and God saw that it was good.

22 And God blessed them, saying, Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let fowl multiply in the earth.

23 And the evening and the morning were the fifth day.

24 And God said, Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind, cattle, and creeping thing, and beast of the earth after his kind: and it was so.

25 And God made the beast of the earth after his kind, and cattle after their kind, and every thing that creepeth upon the earth after his kind: and God saw that it was good.

26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.

29 And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.

30 And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to every thing that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is life, I have given every green herb for meat: and it was so.

31 And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day.

The Creation

1 ( A ) In the beginning ( B ) God ( C ) created the heavens and the earth. 2 And the earth was a ( D ) [ a ] formless and desolate emptiness, and ( E ) darkness was over the [ b ] surface of the deep, and ( F ) the Spirit of God ( G ) was hovering over the [ c ] surface of the waters. 3 Then ( H ) God said, “ [ d ] Let there be light”; and there was light. 4 God saw that the light was ( I ) good; and God ( J ) separated the light from the darkness. 5 ( K ) God called the light “day,” and the darkness He called “night.” And ( L ) there was evening and there was morning, one day.

6 Then God said, “Let there be [ e ] an ( M ) expanse in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters.” 7 God made the [ f ] expanse, and separated ( N ) the waters that were below the [ g ] expanse from the waters ( O ) that were above the [ h ] expanse; and it was so. 8 God called the [ i ] expanse “heaven.” And there was evening and there was morning, a second day.

9 Then God said, “ ( P ) Let the waters below the heavens be gathered into one place, and let ( Q ) the dry land appear”; and it was so. 10 And God called the dry land “earth,” and the ( R ) gathering of the waters He called “seas”; and God saw that it was good. 11 Then God said, “Let the earth sprout [ j ] ( S ) vegetation, [ k ] plants yielding seed, and fruit trees on the earth bearing fruit according to [ l ] their kind [ m ] with seed in them”; and it was so. 12 The earth produced [ n ] vegetation, [ o ] plants yielding seed according to [ p ] their kind, and trees bearing fruit [ q ] with seed in them, according to [ r ] their kind; and God saw that it was good. 13 And there was evening and there was morning, a third day.

14 Then God said, “Let there be [ s ] ( T ) lights in the [ t ] ( U ) expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night, and they shall [ u ] serve as ( V ) signs and for ( W ) seasons, and for days and years; 15 and they [ v ] shall serve as lights in the [ w ] expanse of the heavens to give light on the earth”; and it was so. 16 God made the two great lights, the ( X ) greater light [ x ] to govern the day, and the lesser light [ y ] to govern the night; He made ( Y ) the stars also. 17 ( Z ) God placed them in the [ z ] expanse of the heavens to give light on the earth, 18 and [ aa ] to ( AA ) govern the day and the night, and to separate the light from the darkness; and God saw that it was good. 19 And there was evening and there was morning, a fourth day.

20 Then God said, “Let the waters [ ab ] teem with swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth [ ac ] in the open [ ad ] expanse of the heavens.” 21 And God created ( AB ) the great sea creatures and every living creature that moves, with which the waters swarmed, according to their kind, and every winged bird according to its kind; and God saw that it was good. 22 God blessed them, saying, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth.” 23 And there was evening and there was morning, a fifth day.

24 ( AC ) Then God said, “Let the earth produce living creatures according to [ ae ] their kind: livestock and crawling things and animals of the earth according to [ af ] their kind”; and it was so. 25 God made the ( AD ) animals of the earth according to [ ag ] their kind, and the livestock according to [ ah ] their kind, and everything that crawls on the ground according to its kind; and God saw that it was good.

26 Then God said, “ [ ai ] Let ( AE ) Us make ( AF ) mankind in Our image, according to Our likeness; and [ aj ] let them ( AG ) rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the livestock and over all the earth, and over every crawling thing that crawls on the earth.” 27 So God created man ( AH ) in His own image, in the image of God He created him; ( AI ) male and female He created them. 28 God blessed them; and God said to them, “ ( AJ ) Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it; and rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over every living thing that [ ak ] moves on the earth.” 29 Then God said, “Behold, ( AK ) I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the [ al ] surface of all the earth, and every tree [ am ] which has fruit yielding seed; it shall be food for you; 30 and ( AL ) to every animal of the earth and to every bird of the sky and to everything that [ an ] moves on the earth [ ao ] which has life, I have given every green plant for food”; and it was so. 31 And God saw all that He had made, and behold, it was very ( AM ) good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day.

The Beginning

1 In the beginning ( A ) God created ( B ) the heavens ( C ) and the earth. ( D ) 2 Now the earth was formless ( E ) and empty, ( F ) darkness was over the surface of the deep, ( G ) and the Spirit of God ( H ) was hovering ( I ) over the waters.

3 And God said, ( J ) “Let there be light,” and there was light. ( K ) 4 God saw that the light was good, ( L ) and he separated the light from the darkness. ( M ) 5 God called ( N ) the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.” ( O ) And there was evening, and there was morning ( P ) —the first day.

6 And God said, ( Q ) “Let there be a vault ( R ) between the waters ( S ) to separate water from water.” 7 So God made the vault and separated the water under the vault from the water above it. ( T ) And it was so. ( U ) 8 God called ( V ) the vault “sky.” ( W ) And there was evening, and there was morning ( X ) —the second day.

9 And God said, “Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place, ( Y ) and let dry ground ( Z ) appear.” And it was so. ( AA ) 10 God called ( AB ) the dry ground “land,” and the gathered waters ( AC ) he called “seas.” ( AD ) And God saw that it was good. ( AE )

11 Then God said, “Let the land produce vegetation: ( AF ) seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds. ( AG ) ” And it was so. ( AH ) 12 The land produced vegetation: plants bearing seed according to their kinds ( AI ) and trees bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good. ( AJ ) 13 And there was evening, and there was morning ( AK ) —the third day.

14 And God said, “Let there be lights ( AL ) in the vault of the sky to separate the day from the night, ( AM ) and let them serve as signs ( AN ) to mark sacred times, ( AO ) and days and years, ( AP ) 15 and let them be lights in the vault of the sky to give light on the earth.” And it was so. ( AQ ) 16 God made two great lights—the greater light ( AR ) to govern ( AS ) the day and the lesser light to govern ( AT ) the night. ( AU ) He also made the stars. ( AV ) 17 God set them in the vault of the sky to give light on the earth, 18 to govern the day and the night, ( AW ) and to separate light from darkness. And God saw that it was good. ( AX ) 19 And there was evening, and there was morning ( AY ) —the fourth day.

20 And God said, “Let the water teem with living creatures, ( AZ ) and let birds fly above the earth across the vault of the sky.” ( BA ) 21 So God created ( BB ) the great creatures of the sea ( BC ) and every living thing with which the water teems and that moves about in it, ( BD ) according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. ( BE ) And God saw that it was good. ( BF ) 22 God blessed them and said, “Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the water in the seas, and let the birds increase on the earth.” ( BG ) 23 And there was evening, and there was morning ( BH ) —the fifth day.

24 And God said, “Let the land produce living creatures ( BI ) according to their kinds: ( BJ ) the livestock, the creatures that move along the ground, and the wild animals, each according to its kind.” And it was so. ( BK ) 25 God made the wild animals ( BL ) according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and all the creatures that move along the ground according to their kinds. ( BM ) And God saw that it was good. ( BN )

26 Then God said, “Let us ( BO ) make mankind ( BP ) in our image, ( BQ ) in our likeness, ( BR ) so that they may rule ( BS ) over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, ( BT ) over the livestock and all the wild animals, [ a ] and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”

27 So God created ( BU ) mankind ( BV ) in his own image, ( BW )
in the image of God ( BX ) he created them;
male and female ( BY ) he created them. ( BZ )

28 God blessed them and said to them, ( CA ) “Be fruitful and increase in number; ( CB ) fill the earth ( CC ) and subdue it. Rule over ( CD ) the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground. ( CE )

29 Then God said, “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. ( CF ) 30 And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds in the sky and all the creatures that move along the ground—everything that has the breath of life ( CG ) in it—I give every green plant for food. ( CH ) ” And it was so.

31 God saw all that he had made, ( CI ) and it was very good. ( CJ ) And there was evening, and there was morning ( CK ) —the sixth day.
