- Ezekiel Chapter 7
7 The Lord gave this message to me: 2 ‘Son of man, this is what I, the Almighty Lord , say to the land of Israel: The end is now here! I will soon destroy the whole land. 3 The time has come for your final punishment! You will know that I am very angry with you. I will punish you because of the bad way that you have lived. You will receive the punishment that you deserve for all the disgusting things that you have done. 4 I will not be sorry for you. I will not be kind to you. I will punish you as you deserve. You have done disgusting things. So I will punish you and you will know that I am the Lord .
5 This is what the Almighty Lord says: Terrible trouble is coming to you! It will be worse than any other trouble. 6 The end has now come! It is finally here to destroy you! Look out! 7 You people who live in the land will now receive terrible punishment. The day for that to happen is very near. There will be no more sound of happy parties on the mountains. Instead there will be shouts of fear. 8 Very soon, I will punish you because of my great anger. You will know how angry I am. I will judge you for the way that you have lived. I will punish you as you deserve for the disgusting things that you have done. 9 I will not be sorry for you. I will not be kind to you. I will punish you as you deserve, because of the disgusting things that you have done. Then you will know that I, the Lord , am causing you pain.
10 Yes, the day of your punishment is here! Terrible trouble is coming to you! Like a tree that is ready to make flowers, your proud and wicked acts are ready for punishment. 11 You use violence to help you to do wicked things. None of all those people will escape. None of their riches or valuable things will remain. 12 The day of punishment has now come! The person who buys things will no longer be happy. Nor will the person who sells things. My anger will bring pain to all of them. 13 Any man who sells his land will never get it back as long as he lives. God has shown what he will do to all those people. He will not change his mind. Each one will lose his life because of their sins.
14 The soldiers make a noise with trumpets to prepare for war. But nobody goes out to fight a battle because my anger has brought punishment for all the people.
15 The enemy is ready to attack outside the city. Inside the city, there is disease and famine. Enemy soldiers will kill the people who are in the country. Famine and disease will kill everyone who is in the city. 16 Those who remain alive will escape. They will run to the mountains. They will be like doves that hunters have chased out of the valleys. They will cry aloud because of their sins. 17 Their hands will be weak. Their knees will shake. 18 They will wear sackcloth. They will be very afraid. Their faces will show that they are ashamed. They will cut all the hair from their heads. 19 They will throw their silver away in the streets. They will think that their gold has no value, like dirt. Their silver and their gold will not be able to save them on the day of the Lord 's great anger. When they are hungry, their money will not buy them any food. It is their riches that have caused them to do wicked things. 20 They were proud of their beautiful jewels. They used them to make disgusting idols and images. That is why I, the Lord , have made them hate their valuable things. 21 I will allow foreigners and wicked people to take those things from them. They will use those valuable things in a disgusting way. 22 Those foreigners and robbers will go into my holy temple. They will cause it to become unclean. But I will look away and I will allow them to do that.
23 Prepare chains to tie my people. The whole land is full of murder and violence. 24 I will bring the most wicked people from other nations to attack. They will take the houses of my people and they will live in them. The strong men among my people will no longer boast. Enemies will spoil the holy places where my people worshipped.
25 Terrible trouble is coming to my people! When they are afraid, they will look for peace. But they will not find it. 26 Many troubles will happen, one after another. There will be lots of news about terrible things. People will ask the prophets to tell them what will happen. The priests will not have anything to teach the people. The leaders will not have any good advice. 27 The king will be very sad. His son will not hope for anything good to happen. The people will shake with fear.
I will punish them as they deserve for the way that they have lived. I will judge them in the same way that they have judged other people. Then they will know that I am the Lord .’
7 Then the word of the Lord came to me. 2 He said, “Now, son of man, here is a message from the Lord God . This message is for the land of Israel:
“The end!
The end is coming.
The whole country will be destroyed.
3 Your end is coming now!
I will show how angry I am with you.
I will punish you for the evil things you did.
I will make you pay for all the terrible things you did.
4 I will not show you any mercy or feel sorry for you.
I am punishing you for the evil things you did.
You have done such terrible things.
Now, you will know that I am the Lord .”
5 This is what the Lord God said: “There will be one disaster after another! 6 The end is coming, and it will come quickly! 7 You people living in Israel, disaster is coming. It is time for punishment. Those are not shouts of joy in the mountains. Those are cries of panic. 8 Very soon now, I will show you how angry I am. I will show all of my anger against you. I will punish you for the evil things you did. I will make you pay for all the terrible things you did. 9 I will not show you any mercy or feel sorry for you. I am punishing you for the evil things you did. You have done such terrible things. Now, you will know that I am the Lord .
10 “That time of punishment has come like a plant sprouting, budding, and flowering. God has given the signal, the enemy is prepared, and their proud king is ready. 11 This violent man is ready to punish the evil people. There are many people in Israel—but he is not one of them. He is not a person in that crowd. He is not some important leader from them.
12 “The time of punishment has come. The day is here. Those who buy things will not be happy, and those who sell things will not feel bad about selling them because that terrible punishment will happen to everyone. 13 The people who sold their property [ a ] will never go back to it. Even if some people escape alive, they will never go back to their property, because this vision is for the whole crowd. So even if some people escape alive, it will not make everyone feel better.
14 “They will blow the trumpet to warn the people. The people will get ready for battle, but they will not go out to fight because I will show the whole crowd how angry I am. 15 The enemy with his sword is outside the city. Disease and hunger is inside the city. If some people go out into the fields, enemy soldiers will kill them. If they stay in the city, hunger and disease will destroy them.
16 “But some people will escape. The survivors will run to the mountains, but they will not be happy. They will be sad for all their sins. They will cry and make sad noises like doves. 17 They will be too tired and sad to raise their arms. Their legs will be like water. 18 They will wear sackcloth and be covered with fear. You will see the shame on every face. They will shave their heads to show their sadness. 19 They will throw their silver idols into the streets. They will treat their gold statues like dirty rags, because those things will not be able to save them when the Lord shows his anger. Those things were nothing but a trap that caused the people to fall. They will not give food to the people or put food in their bellies.
20 “They used their beautiful jewelry and made an idol. They were proud of that statue. They made their terrible statues. They made those filthy things, so I will throw them away like a dirty rag. 21 I will let strangers take them. Those strangers will make fun of them. They will kill some of the people and take others away as prisoners. 22 I will turn my head away from them—I will not look at them. The strangers will ruin my Temple—they will go into the secret parts of that holy building and make it unfit for worship.
23 “Make chains for the prisoners, because many people will be punished for killing other people. There will be violence every place in the city. 24 I will bring evil people from other nations, and they will get all the houses of the people of Israel. I will stop all you powerful people from being so proud. Those people from other nations will get all your places of worship.
25 “You will shake with fear. You will look for peace, but there will be none. 26 You will hear one sad story after another. You will hear nothing but bad news. You will look for a prophet and ask him for a vision. The priests will have nothing to teach you, and the elders will not have any good advice to give you. 27 Your king will be crying for the people who died. The leaders will wear sackcloth. The common people will be very afraid, because I will pay them back for what they did. I will decide their punishment, and I will punish them. Then they will know that I am the Lord .”
7 Moreover the word of the Lord came unto me, saying,
2 Also, thou son of man, thus saith the Lord God unto the land of Israel; An end, the end is come upon the four corners of the land.
3 Now is the end come upon thee, and I will send mine anger upon thee, and will judge thee according to thy ways, and will recompense upon thee all thine abominations.
4 And mine eye shall not spare thee, neither will I have pity: but I will recompense thy ways upon thee, and thine abominations shall be in the midst of thee: and ye shall know that I am the Lord .
5 Thus saith the Lord God ; An evil, an only evil, behold, is come.
6 An end is come, the end is come: it watcheth for thee; behold, it is come.
7 The morning is come unto thee, O thou that dwellest in the land: the time is come, the day of trouble is near, and not the sounding again of the mountains.
8 Now will I shortly pour out my fury upon thee, and accomplish mine anger upon thee: and I will judge thee according to thy ways, and will recompense thee for all thine abominations.
9 And mine eye shall not spare, neither will I have pity: I will recompense thee according to thy ways and thine abominations that are in the midst of thee; and ye shall know that I am the Lord that smiteth.
10 Behold the day, behold, it is come: the morning is gone forth; the rod hath blossomed, pride hath budded.
11 Violence is risen up into a rod of wickedness: none of them shall remain, nor of their multitude, nor of any of their's: neither shall there be wailing for them.
12 The time is come, the day draweth near: let not the buyer rejoice, nor the seller mourn: for wrath is upon all the multitude thereof.
13 For the seller shall not return to that which is sold, although they were yet alive: for the vision is touching the whole multitude thereof, which shall not return; neither shall any strengthen himself in the iniquity of his life.
14 They have blown the trumpet, even to make all ready; but none goeth to the battle: for my wrath is upon all the multitude thereof.
15 The sword is without, and the pestilence and the famine within: he that is in the field shall die with the sword; and he that is in the city, famine and pestilence shall devour him.
16 But they that escape of them shall escape, and shall be on the mountains like doves of the valleys, all of them mourning, every one for his iniquity.
17 All hands shall be feeble, and all knees shall be weak as water.
18 They shall also gird themselves with sackcloth, and horror shall cover them; and shame shall be upon all faces, and baldness upon all their heads.
19 They shall cast their silver in the streets, and their gold shall be removed: their silver and their gold shall not be able to deliver them in the day of the wrath of the Lord : they shall not satisfy their souls, neither fill their bowels: because it is the stumblingblock of their iniquity.
20 As for the beauty of his ornament, he set it in majesty: but they made the images of their abominations and of their detestable things therein: therefore have I set it far from them.
21 And I will give it into the hands of the strangers for a prey, and to the wicked of the earth for a spoil; and they shall pollute it.
22 My face will I turn also from them, and they shall pollute my secret place: for the robbers shall enter into it, and defile it.
23 Make a chain: for the land is full of bloody crimes, and the city is full of violence.
24 Wherefore I will bring the worst of the heathen, and they shall possess their houses: I will also make the pomp of the strong to cease; and their holy places shall be defiled.
25 Destruction cometh; and they shall seek peace, and there shall be none.
26 Mischief shall come upon mischief, and rumour shall be upon rumour; then shall they seek a vision of the prophet; but the law shall perish from the priest, and counsel from the ancients.
27 The king shall mourn, and the prince shall be clothed with desolation, and the hands of the people of the land shall be troubled: I will do unto them after their way, and according to their deserts will I judge them; and they shall know that I am the Lord .
7 Moreover, the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 2 “And you, son of man, this is what the Lord [ a ] God says to the land of Israel: ‘An ( A ) end! The end is coming on the four corners of the land. 3 Now the end is upon you, for I will send My anger against you; I will judge you according to your ways and [ b ] bring all your abominations upon you. 4 And My eye will have no pity on you, nor will I spare you , but I will [ c ] ( B ) bring your ways upon you, and your abominations will be among you; then you will ( C ) know that I am the Lord !’
5 “This is what the Lord [ d ] God says: ‘A ( D ) disaster, a unique disaster, behold, it is coming! 6 An end [ e ] is coming; the end has come! It has ( E ) awakened against you; behold, it has come! 7 Your [ f ] doom has come to you, you inhabitant of the land. The ( F ) time has come, the ( G ) day is near—panic rather than joyful shouting on the mountains. 8 Now I will shortly ( H ) pour out My wrath on you and expend My anger against you; I will ( I ) judge you according to your ways and [ g ] bring on you all your abominations. 9 My eye will have no pity nor will I spare you . I will [ h ] repay you according to your ways, while your abominations are in your midst; then you will know that I, the Lord , am striking.
10 ‘Behold, the day! Behold, it is coming! Your [ i ] doom has gone forth; the ( J ) rod has budded, arrogance has blossomed. 11 Violence [ j ] has grown into a rod of ( K ) wickedness. None of them shall remain , none of their [ k ] people, none of their ( L ) wealth, nor anything eminent among them. 12 The ( M ) time has come, the day has arrived. Let neither the ( N ) buyer rejoice nor the seller mourn; for ( O ) wrath is against all their multitude. 13 Indeed, the seller will not [ l ] ( P ) regain [ m ] what he sold as long as [ n ] they both live; for the vision regarding all their multitude will not [ o ] be averted, nor will any of them maintain his life by his wrongdoing.
14 ‘They have ( Q ) blown the trumpet and made everything ready, but no one is going to the battle, for My wrath is against all [ p ] their multitude. 15 The ( R ) sword is outside the city and the plague and the famine are within. Anyone who is in the field will die by the sword, while famine and the plague will consume those in the city. 16 Even when their survivors ( S ) escape, they will be on the mountains like ( T ) doves of the valleys, all of them ( U ) moaning, each over his own wrongdoing. 17 All ( V ) hands will hang limp, and all [ q ] knees will drip with water. 18 They will ( W ) put on sackcloth and ( X ) shuddering will overwhelm them; and shame will be on all faces, and a [ r ] ( Y ) bald patch on all their heads. 19 They will ( Z ) fling their silver into the streets, and their gold will become an abhorrent thing; their ( AA ) silver and their gold will not be able to save them on the day of the wrath of the Lord . They cannot satisfy their [ s ] appetite, nor can they fill their stomachs, because their wrongdoing has become a cause of stumbling.
20 Moreover, they transformed the splendor of His jewels into pride, and ( AB ) they made the images of their abominations and their detestable things with it; therefore I will make it an abhorrent thing to them. 21 And I will hand it over to the ( AC ) foreigners as plunder, and to the wicked of the earth as spoils; and they will profane it. 22 I will also turn My ( AD ) face away from them, and they will profane My treasure; then robbers will enter and profane it.
23 ‘ ( AE ) Make the [ t ] chain, for the land is full of [ u ] ( AF ) bloody crimes, and the city is ( AG ) full of violence. 24 Therefore, I will bring the worst of the ( AH ) nations, and they will take possession of their houses. I will also put an end to the ( AI ) pride of the strong ones, and their ( AJ ) holy places will be profaned. 25 When anguish comes, they will seek ( AK ) peace, but there will be none. 26 ( AL ) Disaster will come upon disaster and ( AM ) rumor will be added to rumor; then they will seek a ( AN ) vision from a prophet, but the ( AO ) Law will be lost from the priest, and ( AP ) counsel from the elders. 27 The king will mourn, the prince will be ( AQ ) clothed in horror, and the hands of the people of the land will [ v ] tremble. I will deal with them because of their conduct, and by their judgments I will judge them. And they will know that I am the Lord .’”
7 The word of the Lord came to me: 2 “Son of man, this is what the Sovereign Lord says to the land of Israel:
“‘The end! ( A ) The end has come
upon the four corners ( B ) of the land!
3 The end is now upon you,
and I will unleash my anger against you.
I will judge you according to your conduct ( C )
and repay you for all your detestable practices. ( D )
4 I will not look on you with pity; ( E )
I will not spare you.
I will surely repay you for your conduct
and for the detestable practices among you.
“‘Then you will know that I am the Lord .’ ( F )
5 “This is what the Sovereign Lord says:
“‘Disaster! ( G ) Unheard-of [ a ] disaster!
See, it comes!
6 The end ( H ) has come!
The end has come!
It has roused itself against you.
See, it comes!
7 Doom has come upon you,
upon you who dwell in the land.
The time has come! The day ( I ) is near! ( J )
There is panic, not joy, on the mountains.
8 I am about to pour out my wrath ( K ) on you
and spend my anger against you.
I will judge you according to your conduct
and repay you for all your detestable practices. ( L )
9 I will not look on you with pity;
I will not spare you. ( M )
I will repay you for your conduct
and for the detestable practices among you. ( N )
“‘Then you will know that it is I the Lord who strikes you. ( O )
10 “‘See, the day!
See, it comes!
Doom has burst forth,
the rod ( P ) has budded,
arrogance has blossomed!
11 Violence ( Q ) has arisen, [ b ]
a rod to punish the wicked.
None of the people will be left,
none of that crowd—
none of their wealth,
nothing of value. ( R )
12 The time has come!
The day has arrived!
Let not the buyer ( S ) rejoice
nor the seller grieve,
for my wrath is on the whole crowd. ( T )
13 The seller will not recover
the property that was sold—
as long as both buyer and seller live.
For the vision concerning the whole crowd
will not be reversed.
Because of their sins, not one of them
will preserve their life. ( U )
14 “‘They have blown the trumpet, ( V )
they have made all things ready,
but no one will go into battle,
for my wrath ( W ) is on the whole crowd.
15 Outside is the sword;
inside are plague and famine.
Those in the country
will die by the sword;
those in the city
will be devoured by famine and plague. ( X )
16 The fugitives ( Y ) who escape
will flee to the mountains.
Like doves ( Z ) of the valleys,
they will all moan,
each for their own sins. ( AA )
17 Every hand will go limp; ( AB )
every leg will be wet with urine. ( AC )
18 They will put on sackcloth ( AD )
and be clothed with terror. ( AE )
Every face will be covered with shame,
and every head will be shaved. ( AF )
19 “‘They will throw their silver into the streets, ( AG )
and their gold will be treated as a thing unclean.
Their silver and gold
will not be able to deliver them
in the day of the Lord ’s wrath. ( AH )
It will not satisfy ( AI ) their hunger
or fill their stomachs,
for it has caused them to stumble ( AJ ) into sin. ( AK )
20 They took pride in their beautiful jewelry
and used it to make ( AL ) their detestable idols.
They made it into vile images; ( AM )
therefore I will make it a thing unclean for them. ( AN )
21 I will give their wealth as plunder ( AO ) to foreigners
and as loot to the wicked of the earth,
who will defile it. ( AP )
22 I will turn my face ( AQ ) away from the people,
and robbers will desecrate the place I treasure.
They will enter it
and will defile it. ( AR )
23 “‘Prepare chains!
For the land is full of bloodshed, ( AS )
and the city is full of violence. ( AT )
24 I will bring the most wicked of nations
to take possession of their houses.
I will put an end to the pride of the mighty,
and their sanctuaries ( AU ) will be desecrated. ( AV )
25 When terror comes,
they will seek peace in vain. ( AW )
26 Calamity upon calamity ( AX ) will come,
and rumor upon rumor.
They will go searching for a vision from the prophet, ( AY )
priestly instruction in the law will cease,
the counsel of the elders will come to an end. ( AZ )
27 The king will mourn,
the prince will be clothed with despair, ( BA )
and the hands of the people of the land will tremble.
I will deal with them according to their conduct, ( BB )
and by their own standards I will judge them.
“‘Then they will know that I am the Lord . ( BC ) ’”
