Each tribe gets its part of the land

48 ‘This is the list of Israel's tribes, with the land that each tribe will receive:

Dan will receive land at the north border of Israel. Their north border goes east from the Mediterranean Sea along the road to Hethlon, as far as Lebo-Hamath. From there, it goes to Hazar-Enan, on the border between Damascus and Hamath.

Dan's part of the land goes all the way from Israel's border in the east to the Mediterranean Sea in the west.

2 South of Dan's land will be the land for Asher.

3 South of Asher's land will be the land for Naphtali.

4 South of Naphtali's land will be the land for Manasseh.

5 South of Manasseh's land will be the land for Ephraim.

6 South of Ephraim's land will be the land for Reuben.

7 South of Reuben's land will be the land for Judah.

8 South of Judah's land will be a special part of the land, with the temple in the middle of it. From east to west, it will be the same size as the parts of the land for Israel's tribes. From north to south, it will be 12½ kilometres.

9 The part that belongs to the Lord for his temple will be 12½ kilometres long and 10 kilometres wide. 10 The priests will have a part of this holy land. Their part will measure 12½ kilometres from east to west. It will measure 5 kilometres from north to south. The Lord 's temple will be in the middle of this part. 11 This holy part of the land will belong to the priests who are descendants of Zadok. They are the priests who served me faithfully. They did not turn away from me as the other Levites did when Israel's people did not obey me. 12 So the priests will have that special part of the land, next to the part for the Levites. The priests' part will be the most holy part of the land.

13 The Levites will also have a special part, south of the part for the priests. It will be the same size. It will measure 12½ kilometres from east to west, and 5 kilometres from north to south. So the land for the priests and for the Levites will be 12½ kilometres from east to west and 10 kilometres from north to south. 14 The special part of the land that belongs to the Lord is the best of the whole land. You must not give his land to anyone else or sell it to anyone else. It is holy and it belongs to the Lord .

15 The other part of the special land is 12½ kilometres from east to west and 2½ kilometres from north to south. That part is not holy. Ordinary people may use it. They may live there and use the fields. There will be a city in the middle of it. 16 The city will be square, 2,250 metres long on each side. 17 You must leave an open space 125 metres wide on each side of the city. 18 There will be two other pieces of land south of the special holy land. There will be a piece 2.5 kilometres wide on the east side of the city and a piece 2.5 kilometres wide on the west side. People who live in the city may use these pieces of land to grow crops. 19 There will be people from the different tribes of Israel who live in the city. Any of them may use the land to grow things.

20 The whole of the special land, including the holy part and the part for the city, will be a square. Each side will be 12½ kilometres.

21 The parts of land on each side of the square will belong to the ruler. The part on the east side will go as far as Israel's border in the east. The part on the west side will go as far as the Mediterranean Sea. The holy part of land where the temple is will be in the middle, between them. 22 The land that belongs to the Levites and the priests, as well as the city, will be between the two parts of land that belong to the ruler. The land for Judah will be on the north side of these lands. The land for Benjamin's will be on the south side.

23 The other tribes will each have a part of the land that is south of this special part. The land for each of these tribes will go all the way from Israel's border in the east to the Mediterranean Sea in the west.

South of the special land will be the land for Benjamin.

24 South of the Benjamin's land will be the land for Simeon.

25 South of Simeon's land will be the land for Issachar.

26 South of Issachar's land will be the land for Zebulun.

27 South of Zebulun's land will be the land for Gad.

28 The border on the south side of Gad's land goes from Tamar to the springs of water near Meribath Kadesh. From there, it goes along the stream at Egypt's border to the Mediterranean Sea.

29 That is how you must share the land among Israel's tribes. Each part will belong to one tribe and their descendants. I, the Almighty Lord , say this.

The gates of the city

30 These will be the entrance gates on each side of the city. The wall on the north side of the city will be 2,250 metres long. 31 There will be three gates on that side. Each gate will have the name of one of Israel's tribes, one for Reuben, the next for Judah, and the next for Levi. 32 The wall on the east side will also be 2,250 metres long. The three gates on that side will be for Joseph, for Benjamin and for Dan. 33 The wall on the south side will also be 2,250 metres long. The three gates on that side will be for Simeon, for Issachar and for Zebulun. 34 The wall on the west side will also be 2,250 metres long. The three gates on that side will be for Gad, for Asher and for Naphtali. 35 So the walls all around the city will measure 9,000 metres.

From that time on, the name of the city will be, “The Lord is there.” ’

The Land for the Tribes of Israel

48 “The northern border goes east from the Mediterranean Sea to Hethlon to Hamath Pass and then all the way to Hazar Enan. This is on the border between Damascus and Hamath. The land for the tribes in this group will go from the east of these borders to the west. From north to south, the tribes in this area are Dan, Asher, Naphtali, Manasseh, Ephraim, Reuben, and Judah.

The Special Section of Land

8 “The next area of land will be for a special use. This land is south of Judah’s land. This area is 25,000 cubits [ a ] long from north to south. From east to west, it will be as wide as the land that belongs to the other tribes. The Temple will be in the middle of this section of land. 9 You will dedicate this land to the Lord . It will be 25,000 cubits long and 20,000 cubits [ b ] wide. 10 This special area of land will be divided among the priests and Levites.

“The priests will get one part of this area. The land will be 25,000 cubits long on the north side, 10,000 cubits [ c ] wide on the west side, 10,000 cubits wide on the east side, and 25,000 cubits long on the south side. The Lord ’s Temple will be in the middle of this area of land. 11 This land is for Zadok’s descendants. These men were chosen to be my holy priests, because they continued to serve me when the other people of Israel left me. Zadok’s family did not leave me like the other people from the tribe of Levi. 12 This share from this holy part of the land will be especially for these priests. It will be next to the land of the Levites.

13 “Next to the land for the priests, the Levites will have a share of the land. It will be 25,000 cubits long and 10,000 cubits wide. They will get the full length and width of this land—25,000 cubits long and 20,000 cubits wide. 14 The Levites will not sell or trade any of this land. They will not be able to sell any of it. They must not cut up this part of the country, because this land belongs to the Lord —it is very special. It is the best part of the land.

The Shares for the City Property

15 “There will be an area of land 5000 cubits [ d ] wide by 25,000 cubits long that is left over from the land given to the priests and Levites. This land can be for the city, for grasslands for animals, and for building houses. The common people may use this land. The city will be in the middle of it. 16 These are the city’s measurements: The north side will be 4500 cubits. [ e ] The south side will be 4500 cubits. The east side will be 4500 cubits. The west side will be 4500 cubits. 17 The city will have grasslands. These grasslands will be 250 cubits [ f ] on the north and 250 cubits on the south. They will be 250 cubits on the east and 250 cubits on the west. 18 What is left of the length along the side of the holy area will be 10,000 cubits on the east and 10,000 cubits on the west. This land will be along the side of the holy area. This land will grow food for the city workers. 19 The city workers from all the tribes of Israel will farm this land.

20 “This special area of land will be square. It will be 25,000 cubits long by 25,000 cubits wide. You must set apart this area for its special purposes. One part is for the priests, one part is for the Levites, and one part is for the city.

21-22 “Part of that special land will be for the ruler of the country. That special area of land is square. It is 25,000 cubits long by 25,000 cubits wide. Part of this special land is for the priests, part of it is for the Levites, and part of it is for the Temple. The Temple is in the middle of this area of land. The rest of the land belongs to the ruler of the country. The ruler will get the area between the land of Benjamin and the land of Judah.

23-27 “South of this special area will be the land for the tribes that lived east of the Jordan River. Each tribe will get a section of land that goes from the eastern border to the Mediterranean Sea. From north to south, these tribes are Benjamin, Simeon, Issachar, Zebulun, and Gad.

28 “The southern border of Gad’s land will go from Tamar to the oasis at Meribah-kadesh, then along the Brook of Egypt to the Mediterranean Sea. 29 This is the land that you will divide among the tribes of Israel. This is what each group will get.” This is what the Lord God said!

The Gates of the City

30 “These are the gates of the city. The gates will be named for the tribes of Israel.

“The north side of the city will be 4500 cubits long. 31 There will be three gates: Reuben’s Gate, Judah’s Gate, and Levi’s Gate.

32 “The east side of the city will be 4500 cubits long. There will be three gates: Joseph’s Gate, Benjamin’s Gate, and Dan’s Gate.

33 “The south side of the city will be 4500 cubits long. There will be three gates: Simeon’s Gate, Issachar’s Gate, and Zebulun’s Gate.

34 “The west side of the city will be 4500 cubits long. There will be three gates: Gad’s Gate, Asher’s Gate, and Naphtali’s Gate.

35 “The distance around the city will be 18,000 cubits. [ g ] From now on, the name of the city will be the lord is there . [ h ]

48 Now these are the names of the tribes. From the north end to the coast of the way of Hethlon, as one goeth to Hamath, Hazarenan, the border of Damascus northward, to the coast of Hamath; for these are his sides east and west; a portion for Dan.

2 And by the border of Dan, from the east side unto the west side, a portion for Asher.

3 And by the border of Asher, from the east side even unto the west side, a portion for Naphtali.

4 And by the border of Naphtali, from the east side unto the west side, a portion for Manasseh.

5 And by the border of Manasseh, from the east side unto the west side, a portion for Ephraim.

6 And by the border of Ephraim, from the east side even unto the west side, a portion for Reuben.

7 And by the border of Reuben, from the east side unto the west side, a portion for Judah.

8 And by the border of Judah, from the east side unto the west side, shall be the offering which ye shall offer of five and twenty thousand reeds in breadth, and in length as one of the other parts, from the east side unto the west side: and the sanctuary shall be in the midst of it.

9 The oblation that ye shall offer unto the Lord shall be of five and twenty thousand in length, and of ten thousand in breadth.

10 And for them, even for the priests, shall be this holy oblation; toward the north five and twenty thousand in length, and toward the west ten thousand in breadth, and toward the east ten thousand in breadth, and toward the south five and twenty thousand in length: and the sanctuary of the Lord shall be in the midst thereof.

11 It shall be for the priests that are sanctified of the sons of Zadok; which have kept my charge, which went not astray when the children of Israel went astray, as the Levites went astray.

12 And this oblation of the land that is offered shall be unto them a thing most holy by the border of the Levites.

13 And over against the border of the priests the Levites shall have five and twenty thousand in length, and ten thousand in breadth: all the length shall be five and twenty thousand, and the breadth ten thousand.

14 And they shall not sell of it, neither exchange, nor alienate the firstfruits of the land: for it is holy unto the Lord .

15 And the five thousand, that are left in the breadth over against the five and twenty thousand, shall be a profane place for the city, for dwelling, and for suburbs: and the city shall be in the midst thereof.

16 And these shall be the measures thereof; the north side four thousand and five hundred, and the south side four thousand and five hundred, and on the east side four thousand and five hundred, and the west side four thousand and five hundred.

17 And the suburbs of the city shall be toward the north two hundred and fifty, and toward the south two hundred and fifty, and toward the east two hundred and fifty, and toward the west two hundred and fifty.

18 And the residue in length over against the oblation of the holy portion shall be ten thousand eastward, and ten thousand westward: and it shall be over against the oblation of the holy portion; and the increase thereof shall be for food unto them that serve the city.

19 And they that serve the city shall serve it out of all the tribes of Israel.

20 All the oblation shall be five and twenty thousand by five and twenty thousand: ye shall offer the holy oblation foursquare, with the possession of the city.

21 And the residue shall be for the prince, on the one side and on the other of the holy oblation, and of the possession of the city, over against the five and twenty thousand of the oblation toward the east border, and westward over against the five and twenty thousand toward the west border, over against the portions for the prince: and it shall be the holy oblation; and the sanctuary of the house shall be in the midst thereof.

22 Moreover from the possession of the Levites, and from the possession of the city, being in the midst of that which is the prince's, between the border of Judah and the border of Benjamin, shall be for the prince.

23 As for the rest of the tribes, from the east side unto the west side, Benjamin shall have a portion.

24 And by the border of Benjamin, from the east side unto the west side, Simeon shall have a portion.

25 And by the border of Simeon, from the east side unto the west side, Issachar a portion.

26 And by the border of Issachar, from the east side unto the west side, Zebulun a portion.

27 And by the border of Zebulun, from the east side unto the west side, Gad a portion.

28 And by the border of Gad, at the south side southward, the border shall be even from Tamar unto the waters of strife in Kadesh, and to the river toward the great sea.

29 This is the land which ye shall divide by lot unto the tribes of Israel for inheritance, and these are their portions, saith the Lord God .

30 And these are the goings out of the city on the north side, four thousand and five hundred measures.

31 And the gates of the city shall be after the names of the tribes of Israel: three gates northward; one gate of Reuben, one gate of Judah, one gate of Levi.

32 And at the east side four thousand and five hundred: and three gates; and one gate of Joseph, one gate of Benjamin, one gate of Dan.

33 And at the south side four thousand and five hundred measures: and three gates; one gate of Simeon, one gate of Issachar, one gate of Zebulun.

34 At the west side four thousand and five hundred, with their three gates; one gate of Gad, one gate of Asher, one gate of Naphtali.

35 It was round about eighteen thousand measures: and the name of the city from that day shall be, The Lord is there.

Division of the Land

48 “Now ( A ) these are the names of the tribes: from the northern extremity, [ a ] beside the way of Hethlon to [ b ] Lebo-hamath, as far as Hazar-enan at the border of Damascus, toward the north [ c ] beside Hamath, [ d ] running from east to west, ( B ) Dan, one portion . 2 Beside the border of Dan, from the east side to the west side, ( C ) Asher, one portion . 3 Beside the border of Asher, from the east side to the west side, ( D ) Naphtali, one portion . 4 Beside the border of Naphtali, from the east side to the west side, ( E ) Manasseh, one portion . 5 Beside the border of Manasseh, from the east side to the west side, ( F ) Ephraim, one portion . 6 Beside the border of Ephraim, from the east side to the west side, ( G ) Reuben, one portion . 7 Beside the border of Reuben, from the east side to the west side, ( H ) Judah, one portion .

8 “And beside the border of Judah, from the east side to the west side, shall be the [ e ] allotment which you shall [ f ] set apart, twenty-five thousand [ g ] cubits in width, and in length like one of the portions, from the east side to the west side; and the ( I ) sanctuary shall be in the middle of it. 9 The allotment that you shall set apart to the Lord shall be twenty-five thousand cubits in length and ten thousand in width.

Portion for the Priests

10 The holy allotment shall be for these, namely for the ( J ) priests, toward the north twenty-five thousand cubits in length , toward the west ten thousand in width, toward the east ten thousand in width, and toward the south twenty-five thousand in length; and the sanctuary of the Lord shall be in its midst. 11 It shall be for the priests who are sanctified of the ( K ) sons of Zadok, who have [ h ] taken the responsibility I gave them, who did not go astray when the sons of Israel went astray as the ( L ) Levites went astray. 12 It shall be an allotment to them from the allotment of the land, a most holy reserve, by the border of the Levites. 13 And alongside the border of the priests, the Levites shall have twenty-five thousand cubits in length and ten thousand in width. The entire length shall be twenty-five thousand cubits and the width ten thousand. 14 Moreover, they ( M ) shall not sell or exchange any of it, or allow this [ i ] choice portion of land to pass to others ; for it is holy to the Lord .

15 “The remainder, five thousand cubits in width and twenty-five thousand [ j ] in length, shall be for ( N ) common use for the city, for homes and for [ k ] open spaces; and the city shall be in its midst. 16 And these shall be its measurements: the north side, 4,500 cubits , the south side ( O ) 4,500 cubits , the east side 4,500 cubits , and the west side, 4,500 cubits . 17 The city shall have [ l ] open spaces: on the north 250 cubits , on the south 250 cubits , on the east 250 cubits , and on the west 250 cubits . 18 The remainder of the length alongside the holy allotment shall be ten thousand cubits toward the east and ten thousand toward the west; and it shall be [ m ] alongside the holy allotment. And its produce shall be food for the workers of the city. 19 And the workers of the city, out of all the tribes of Israel, shall cultivate it. 20 The whole allotment shall be twenty-five thousand by twenty-five thousand cubits ; you shall [ n ] set apart the holy allotment, a [ o ] square, with the [ p ] property of the city.

Portion for the Prince

21 “The ( P ) remainder shall be for the prince, on the one side and on the other of the holy allotment and of the [ q ] property of the city; in front of the twenty-five thousand cubits of the allotment toward the east border and westward in front of the twenty-five thousand toward the west border, alongside the portions, it shall be for the prince. And the holy allotment and the sanctuary of the house shall be in the middle of it. 22 And exclusive of the [ r ] property of the Levites and the [ s ] property of the city, which are in the middle of that which belongs to the prince, everything between the border of Judah and the border of Benjamin shall belong to the prince.

Portion for Other Tribes

23 “As for the rest of the tribes: from the east side to the west side, ( Q ) Benjamin, one portion . 24 Beside the border of Benjamin, from the east side to the west side, ( R ) Simeon, one portion . 25 Beside the border of Simeon, from the east side to the west side, ( S ) Issachar, one portion . 26 Beside the border of Issachar, from the east side to the west side, ( T ) Zebulun, one portion . 27 Beside the border of Zebulun, from the east side to the west side, ( U ) Gad, one portion . 28 And beside the border of Gad, at the south side toward the south, the border shall be from ( V ) Tamar to the waters of Meribath-kadesh, to the brook of Egypt , to the ( W ) Great Sea. 29 This is the ( X ) land which you shall divide by lot to the tribes of Israel for an inheritance, and these are their several portions,” declares the Lord [ t ] God .

The City Gates

30 “Now these are the exits of the city: on the ( Y ) north side, 4,500 cubits by measurement, 31 [ u ] shall be the gates of the city, [ v ] ( Z ) named for the tribes of Israel, three gates toward the north: the gate of Reuben, one; the gate of Judah, one; and the gate of Levi, one. 32 On the east side, 4,500 cubits , [ w ] shall be three gates: the gate of Joseph, one; the gate of Benjamin, one; and the gate of Dan, one. 33 On the south side, 4,500 cubits by measurement, [ x ] shall be three gates: the gate of Simeon, one; the gate of Issachar, one; and the gate of Zebulun, one. 34 On the west side, 4,500 cubits, shall be three gates: the gate of Gad, one; the gate of Asher, one; and the gate of Naphtali, one. 35 The city shall be eighteen thousand cubits all around; and the ( AA ) name of the city from that day shall be , ‘ [ y ] The ( AB ) Lord is there.’”

The Division of the Land

48 “These are the tribes, listed by name: At the northern frontier, Dan ( A ) will have one portion; it will follow the Hethlon road ( B ) to Lebo Hamath; ( C ) Hazar Enan and the northern border of Damascus next to Hamath will be part of its border from the east side to the west side.

2 “Asher ( D ) will have one portion; it will border the territory of Dan from east to west.

3 “Naphtali ( E ) will have one portion; it will border the territory of Asher from east to west.

4 “Manasseh ( F ) will have one portion; it will border the territory of Naphtali from east to west.

5 “Ephraim ( G ) will have one portion; it will border the territory of Manasseh ( H ) from east to west. ( I )

6 “Reuben ( J ) will have one portion; it will border the territory of Ephraim from east to west.

7 “Judah ( K ) will have one portion; it will border the territory of Reuben from east to west.

8 “Bordering the territory of Judah from east to west will be the portion you are to present as a special gift. It will be 25,000 cubits [ a ] wide, and its length from east to west will equal one of the tribal portions; the sanctuary will be in the center of it. ( L )

9 “The special portion you are to offer to the Lord will be 25,000 cubits long and 10,000 cubits [ b ] wide. ( M ) 10 This will be the sacred portion for the priests. It will be 25,000 cubits long on the north side, 10,000 cubits wide on the west side, 10,000 cubits wide on the east side and 25,000 cubits long on the south side. In the center of it will be the sanctuary of the Lord . ( N ) 11 This will be for the consecrated priests, the Zadokites, ( O ) who were faithful in serving me ( P ) and did not go astray as the Levites did when the Israelites went astray. ( Q ) 12 It will be a special gift to them from the sacred portion of the land, a most holy portion, bordering the territory of the Levites.

13 “Alongside the territory of the priests, the Levites will have an allotment 25,000 cubits long and 10,000 cubits wide. Its total length will be 25,000 cubits and its width 10,000 cubits. ( R ) 14 They must not sell or exchange any of it. This is the best of the land and must not pass into other hands, because it is holy to the Lord . ( S )

15 “The remaining area, 5,000 cubits [ c ] wide and 25,000 cubits long, will be for the common use of the city, for houses and for pastureland. The city will be in the center of it 16 and will have these measurements: the north side 4,500 cubits, [ d ] the south side 4,500 cubits, the east side 4,500 cubits, and the west side 4,500 cubits. ( T ) 17 The pastureland for the city will be 250 cubits [ e ] on the north, 250 cubits on the south, 250 cubits on the east, and 250 cubits on the west. 18 What remains of the area, bordering on the sacred portion and running the length of it, will be 10,000 cubits on the east side and 10,000 cubits on the west side. Its produce will supply food for the workers of the city. ( U ) 19 The workers from the city who farm it will come from all the tribes of Israel. 20 The entire portion will be a square, 25,000 cubits on each side. As a special gift you will set aside the sacred portion, along with the property of the city.

21 “What remains on both sides of the area formed by the sacred portion and the property of the city will belong to the prince. It will extend eastward from the 25,000 cubits of the sacred portion to the eastern border, and westward from the 25,000 cubits to the western border. Both these areas running the length of the tribal portions will belong to the prince, and the sacred portion with the temple sanctuary will be in the center of them. ( V ) 22 So the property of the Levites and the property of the city will lie in the center of the area that belongs to the prince. The area belonging to the prince will lie between the border of Judah and the border of Benjamin.
