42 Then the man took me out through the north gate of the inside yard of the temple. We went into the outside yard. We arrived at a building that was in the north wall of the inside yard. 2 This building was 50 metres long and 25 metres wide. Its entrance was towards the north. 3 There was a 10 metre space between one side of this building and the temple in the inside yard. The building's other side was opposite the path in the outside yard. It had three levels of rooms in two rows that were opposite each other. 4 A path went between the two rows of rooms. It was 50 metres long and 5 metres wide. The entrances to the rooms were on the north side. 5 The rooms at the top level were not as wide as the rooms below them. And the rooms at the middle level were not as wide as the rooms at the lowest level. This was because the higher rooms needed more space in front of them. 6 They did not have pillars to hold them up as other rooms in the temple yards did. Instead, the walls of the lower rooms held up the rooms above them. So the rooms of each level were smaller than the rooms below them. 7 There was a wall that went across the outside yard in front of the lowest rooms. The wall was 25 metres long. 8 The row of rooms in the outside yard was also 25 metres long. But the other row of rooms in the inside yard, opposite the temple, was 50 metres long. 9 The lowest level of rooms had an entrance from the outside yard at the east end of the building. 10 This entrance was at the end of the wall in the outside yard.
There was another building like this one on the south side of the temple. It was opposite the other building and it also had two rows of rooms. 11 There was path between the two rows. They looked the same as the rooms on the north side. The size of the rooms and the entrances were the same as those of the other building. 12 There was an entrance in the wall opposite the doors of the inside row of rooms. There was also an entrance at the east end of the path between the rows of rooms.
13 Then the man said to me, ‘These rooms that are on the north and south sides of the temple's inside yard are holy. They are for the priests who serve the Lord in his temple. In these rooms, the priests will eat the most holy sacrifices that they offer to the Lord . They will put the most holy offerings there. It is where they will put the grain offerings, the sin offerings and the guilt offerings. The priests will do that because the rooms are holy.
14 When the priests go into the holy place of the temple, they must not leave until they change their clothes. Before they go into the outside yard, they must take off the special clothes that they wear to serve the Lord . Those clothes are holy, so they must put on other clothes. Then they can go out to the places where the people meet.’
15 The man finished measuring everything inside the place where the temple was. Then he took me out through the east gate. He measured all around the outside of the temple yards. 16 He used his stick to measure the wall on the east side. It was 250 metres. 17-19 Then he measured the north side and the south side and the west side. Each side measured the same as the east side. 20 So the wall made a square around the place where the temple was. Each side was 250 metres. The wall made the holy place separate from the ordinary places around it.
42 Then the man led me through the north gate out into the outer courtyard. He led me to a building with many rooms that was west of the restricted area and the building on the north side. 2 This building was 100 cubits [ a ] long and 50 cubits [ b ] wide. People entered it from the courtyard on the north side. 3 The building was three stories tall and had balconies. The 20-cubit [ c ] inner courtyard was between the building and the Temple. On the other side, the rooms faced the pavement of the outer courtyard. 4 There was a path 10 cubits [ d ] wide and 100 cubits long running along the south side of the building, even though the entrance was on the north side. 5-6 Since this building was three stories tall and did not have columns like those columns of the outer courtyards, the top rooms were farther back than the rooms on the middle and bottom floors. The top floor was narrower than the middle floor, which was narrower than the bottom floor because the balconies used this space. 7 There was a wall outside that was parallel to the rooms and ran along the outer courtyard. It ran in front of the rooms for 50 cubits. 8 The row of rooms that ran along the outer courtyard was 50 cubits long, although the total length of the building, as on the Temple side, was 100 cubits long. 9 The entrance was below these rooms at the east end of the building so that people could enter from the outer courtyard. 10 The entrance was at the start of the wall beside the courtyard.
There were rooms on the south side, by the restricted area and the other building. These rooms had a 11 path in front of them. They were like the rooms on the north side. They had the same length and width and the same kind of doors. 12 The entrance to the lower rooms was at the east end of the building so that people could enter from the open end of the path by the wall.
13 The man said to me, “The north rooms and south rooms across from the restricted area are holy. These rooms are for the priests who offer the sacrifices to the Lord . That is where the priests will put the most holy offerings and eat them. That is because that place is holy. The most holy offerings are the grain offerings, the sin offerings, and the guilt offerings. 14 The priests who enter the holy area must leave their serving clothes in that holy place before they go out into the outer courtyard, because these clothes are holy. If a priest wants to go to the part of the Temple where the other people are, he must go to those rooms and put on other clothes.”
15 The man had finished measuring inside the Temple area. Then he brought me out through the east gate and measured all around that area. 16 He measured the east side with the ruler. It was 500 cubits [ e ] long. 17 He measured the north side. It was 500 cubits long. 18 He measured the south side. It was 500 cubits long. 19 He went around to the west side and measured it. It was 500 cubits long. 20 He measured the four walls that went all the way around the Temple. The wall was 500 cubits long and 500 cubits wide. It separated the holy area from the area that is not holy.
42 Then he brought me forth into the utter court, the way toward the north: and he brought me into the chamber that was over against the separate place, and which was before the building toward the north.
2 Before the length of an hundred cubits was the north door, and the breadth was fifty cubits.
3 Over against the twenty cubits which were for the inner court, and over against the pavement which was for the utter court, was gallery against gallery in three stories.
4 And before the chambers was a walk to ten cubits breadth inward, a way of one cubit; and their doors toward the north.
5 Now the upper chambers were shorter: for the galleries were higher than these, than the lower, and than the middlemost of the building.
6 For they were in three stories, but had not pillars as the pillars of the courts: therefore the building was straitened more than the lowest and the middlemost from the ground.
7 And the wall that was without over against the chambers, toward the utter court on the forepart of the chambers, the length thereof was fifty cubits.
8 For the length of the chambers that were in the utter court was fifty cubits: and, lo, before the temple were an hundred cubits.
9 And from under these chambers was the entry on the east side, as one goeth into them from the utter court.
10 The chambers were in the thickness of the wall of the court toward the east, over against the separate place, and over against the building.
11 And the way before them was like the appearance of the chambers which were toward the north, as long as they, and as broad as they: and all their goings out were both according to their fashions, and according to their doors.
12 And according to the doors of the chambers that were toward the south was a door in the head of the way, even the way directly before the wall toward the east, as one entereth into them.
13 Then said he unto me, The north chambers and the south chambers, which are before the separate place, they be holy chambers, where the priests that approach unto the Lord shall eat the most holy things: there shall they lay the most holy things, and the meat offering, and the sin offering, and the trespass offering; for the place is holy.
14 When the priests enter therein, then shall they not go out of the holy place into the utter court, but there they shall lay their garments wherein they minister; for they are holy; and shall put on other garments, and shall approach to those things which are for the people.
15 Now when he had made an end of measuring the inner house, he brought me forth toward the gate whose prospect is toward the east, and measured it round about.
16 He measured the east side with the measuring reed, five hundred reeds, with the measuring reed round about.
17 He measured the north side, five hundred reeds, with the measuring reed round about.
18 He measured the south side, five hundred reeds, with the measuring reed.
19 He turned about to the west side, and measured five hundred reeds with the measuring reed.
20 He measured it by the four sides: it had a wall round about, five hundred reeds long, and five hundred broad, to make a separation between the sanctuary and the profane place.
42 Then he ( A ) brought me out into the ( B ) outer courtyard, the way ( C ) toward the north; and he brought me to the ( D ) chamber which was opposite the ( E ) separate area and opposite the ( F ) building toward the north. 2 Along the length, which was a ( G ) hundred [ a ] cubits, was the north door; the width was fifty cubits. 3 Opposite the ( H ) twenty cubits which belonged to the inner courtyard, and opposite the ( I ) stone pavement which belonged to the outer courtyard, was [ b ] ( J ) gallery corresponding to [ c ] gallery in three stories . 4 In front of the ( K ) chambers was an inner passage ten cubits wide, a way of one hundred cubits; and their openings were on the north. 5 Now the upper chambers were [ d ] smaller because the [ e ] ( L ) galleries took more space away from them than from the lower and middle ones in the building. 6 For they were in ( M ) three stories and had no pillars like the pillars of the courtyards; for that reason the upper chambers were [ f ] set back from the ground upward , more than the lower and middle ones. 7 As for the ( N ) outer wall by the side of the chambers, toward the outer courtyard facing the chambers, its length was fifty cubits. 8 For the length of the chambers which were in the outer courtyard was fifty cubits; and behold, the length of those facing the main room was a ( O ) hundred cubits. 9 And below these chambers was the ( P ) entrance on the east side, as one enters them from the outer courtyard.
10 In the [ g ] thickness of the ( Q ) wall of the courtyard toward the east, facing the ( R ) separate area and facing the building, there were ( S ) chambers. 11 And the ( T ) way in front of them was like the appearance of the chambers which were on the north; according to their length, so was their width, and all their exits were according to their building plans and openings. 12 Corresponding to the openings of the chambers which were toward the south was an opening at the head of the way, the way in front of the ( U ) wall toward the east, as one enters them.
13 Then he said to me, “The north chambers and the south chambers, which are opposite the ( V ) separate area, they are the ( W ) holy chambers where the priests who are ( X ) near to the Lord shall eat the ( Y ) most holy things. There they shall set the most holy things, the grain offering, the sin offering, and the guilt offering; for the place is holy. 14 When the priests enter, they shall not go out into the outer courtyard from the sanctuary [ h ] without ( Z ) laying their ( AA ) garments there in which they minister, for they are holy. They shall put on other garments; then they shall approach that which is for the people.”
15 Now when he had finished measuring the inner house, he brought me out by way of the ( AB ) gate which faced east, and measured it all around. 16 He measured on the east side with the measuring [ i ] rod: five hundred rods by the ( AC ) measuring rod. 17 He measured on the north side: five hundred rods by the measuring rod. 18 On the south side he measured five hundred rods with the measuring rod. 19 He turned to the west side and measured five hundred rods with the measuring rod. 20 He measured it [ j ] on the four sides; it had a ( AD ) wall all around, the ( AE ) length five hundred rods and the ( AF ) width five hundred, to ( AG ) divide between the holy and the [ k ] common.
42 Then the man led me northward into the outer court and brought me to the rooms ( A ) opposite the temple courtyard ( B ) and opposite the outer wall on the north side. ( C ) 2 The building whose door faced north was a hundred cubits long and fifty cubits wide. [ a ] 3 Both in the section twenty cubits [ b ] from the inner court and in the section opposite the pavement of the outer court, gallery ( D ) faced gallery at the three levels. ( E ) 4 In front of the rooms was an inner passageway ten cubits wide and a hundred cubits [ c ] long. [ d ] Their doors were on the north. ( F ) 5 Now the upper rooms were narrower, for the galleries took more space from them than from the rooms on the lower and middle floors of the building. 6 The rooms on the top floor had no pillars, as the courts had; so they were smaller in floor space than those on the lower and middle floors. 7 There was an outer wall parallel to the rooms and the outer court; it extended in front of the rooms for fifty cubits. 8 While the row of rooms on the side next to the outer court was fifty cubits long, the row on the side nearest the sanctuary was a hundred cubits long. 9 The lower rooms had an entrance ( G ) on the east side as one enters them from the outer court.
10 On the south side [ e ] along the length of the wall of the outer court, adjoining the temple courtyard ( H ) and opposite the outer wall, were rooms ( I ) 11 with a passageway in front of them. These were like the rooms on the north; they had the same length and width, with similar exits and dimensions. Similar to the doorways on the north 12 were the doorways of the rooms on the south. There was a doorway at the beginning of the passageway that was parallel to the corresponding wall extending eastward, by which one enters the rooms.
13 Then he said to me, “The north ( J ) and south rooms ( K ) facing the temple courtyard ( L ) are the priests’ rooms, where the priests who approach the Lord will eat the most holy offerings. There they will put the most holy offerings—the grain offerings, ( M ) the sin offerings [ f ] ( N ) and the guilt offerings ( O ) —for the place is holy. ( P ) 14 Once the priests enter the holy precincts, they are not to go into the outer court until they leave behind the garments ( Q ) in which they minister, for these are holy. They are to put on other clothes before they go near the places that are for the people. ( R ) ”
15 When he had finished measuring what was inside the temple area, he led me out by the east gate ( S ) and measured the area all around: 16 He measured the east side with the measuring rod; it was five hundred cubits. [ g ] [ h ] 17 He measured the north side; it was five hundred cubits [ i ] by the measuring rod. 18 He measured the south side; it was five hundred cubits by the measuring rod. 19 Then he turned to the west side and measured; it was five hundred cubits by the measuring rod. 20 So he measured ( T ) the area ( U ) on all four sides. It had a wall around it, ( V ) five hundred cubits long and five hundred cubits wide, ( W ) to separate the holy from the common. ( X )
