41 Then the man took me into the big hall of the temple. [ a ] He measured the walls on each side of the entrance. They were 3 metres thick. 2 The entrance itself was 5 metres wide. The walls on each side were 2½ metres wide. The big hall was 20 metres long and 10 metres wide.

3 Then he went into the inside room. He measured the walls at the entrance. They were 1 metre thick. The entrance was 3 metres wide. The walls on each side were 3½ metres wide. 4 He measured the inside room. It was 10 metres long and 10 metres wide. It was at the back of the big hall. The man said to me, ‘This is the Most Holy Place.’ [ b ]

5 Then the man measured the wall of the temple. It was 3 metres thick. There were small rooms along the outside of the wall, all around the temple. Each room was 2 metres wide. 6 The side rooms were on three levels. Each level had 30 rooms. The temple's wall at each level was less thick than the wall below. So the wall itself held up each level of rooms. They did not have to fix the side rooms into the temple's wall. 7 The side rooms at each level were wider than the rooms on the level below them, because the temple's wall was less thick. There was a set of stairs that went from the lowest level to the middle level and up to the top level.

8 I saw that there was a stone base all around the temple. The side rooms stood on this base as their foundation. It was 3 metres high. 9-10 The outside wall of the side rooms was 2½ metres thick. There was an open space between these rooms and the rooms that the priests used. It was 10 metres wide, all around the temple building. 11 There were two doors for the side rooms. One door opened towards the north. The other door opened towards the south. They opened into a space that was 2½ metres wide. [ c ]

12 There was a large building at the west side of the temple yard. It was 37 metres wide and 47 metres long. Its walls were 2½ metres thick.

13 Then the man measured the outside of the temple building. It was 50 metres long. He measured from the back of the temple across the open space to the back wall of the large building. That was also 50 metres. 14 He measured the front of the temple building and the open space on each side. That was 50 metres too. 15 He measured the building at the back of the temple yard, on the west side. That was also 50 metres, including the side rooms at each end.

Wooden boards covered the walls of the big hall, the inside room and the entrance room of the temple. 16 The boards covered the walls from the floor up to the windows, and above the windows. They used wood to make the edges of the windows. They also covered the windows. 17-18 Workers had cut pictures in the wood above the doors and all over the walls. They were pictures of palm trees and cherubs. There was a picture of a palm tree between each cherub. They covered all the inside walls of the temple. Each cherub had two faces. 19 A human face looked towards the palm tree on one side. A lion's face looked towards the palm tree on the other side. Workers had cut these pictures on the walls around the inside of the whole temple building. 20 The pictures of cherubs and palm trees covered all the walls, from the floor up to above the doors.

21 There were square posts on each side of the entrance to the temple's big hall. The entrance to the Most Holy Place seemed the same.

22 There was an altar that was made of wood. It was 1½ metres high and 1 metre wide on each side. Its corners, its sides and its base were all made of wood. The man said to me, ‘This is the table that stands here in front of the Lord .’

23 The big hall of the temple and the Most Holy Place both had doors that were in two parts. 24 The doors were fixed on both sides of each entrance and they opened in the middle. 25 Workers had cut pictures on the doors of the big hall. They were pictures of palm trees and cherubs, like the pictures on the walls. There was a roof over the outside of the door to the entrance room. It was made of wood. 26 The entrance room had narrow windows in the walls on each side. The windows had pictures of palm trees on each side. Workers had cut shapes of palm trees on its walls. The side rooms around the temple also had roofs over the outside of their doors.

Footnotes

  1. 41:1 The big hall was the Holy Place. Ezekiel was a priest, so he could go into it.
  2. 41:4 The man did not take Ezekiel into the Most Holy Place. Ezekiel was a priest but only the chief priest could go into this room.
  3. 41:11 These rooms were like the rooms in Solomon's temple. See 1 Kings 6:8-10 .

The Holy Place of the Temple

41 Then the man led me into the Holy Place. He measured the walls on either side of the room. The side walls were 6 cubits [ a ] thick on each side. 2 The door was 10 cubits [ b ] wide. The sides of the doorway were 5 cubits [ c ] on each side. He measured that room. It was 40 cubits [ d ] long and 20 cubits wide.

The Most Holy Place in the Temple

3 Then the man went into the last room. He measured the walls on either side of the doorway. Each side wall was 2 cubits [ e ] thick and 7 cubits [ f ] wide. The doorway was 6 cubits wide. 4 Then he measured the length of the room. It was 20 cubits long and 20 cubits wide. He said to me, “This is the Most Holy Place.”

Other Rooms Around the Temple

5 Then the man measured the wall of the Temple. It was 6 cubits thick. There were side rooms all around the Temple. They were 4 cubits [ g ] wide. 6 The side rooms were on three different floors, one above the other. There were 30 rooms on each floor. The wall of the Temple was built with ledges. The side rooms rested on these ledges but were not connected to the Temple wall itself. 7 Each floor of the side rooms around the Temple was wider than the floor below. The walls of the rooms around the Temple became narrower the higher they went so that the rooms on the top floors were wider. A stairway went up from the lowest floor to the highest floor through the middle floor.

8 I also saw that the Temple had a raised base all the way around it. It was the foundation for the side rooms, and it was a full ruler [ h ] high. 9 The outer wall of the side rooms was 5 cubits thick. There was an open area between the side rooms of the Temple 10 and the priests’ rooms. It was 20 cubits [ i ] wide and went all the way around the Temple. 11 The doors of the side rooms opened onto the raised base. There was one entrance on the north side and one entrance on the south side. The raised base was 5 cubits wide all around.

12 There was a building in this restricted area west of the Temple. The building was 70 cubits [ j ] wide and 90 cubits [ k ] long. The wall of the building was 5 cubits thick all around. 13 Then the man measured the Temple. The Temple was 100 cubits [ l ] long. The restricted area, including the building and its walls, was also 100 cubits long. 14 The restricted area on the east side, in front of the Temple, was 100 cubits long.

15 The man measured the length of the building in the restricted area at the rear of the Temple. It was 100 cubits from one wall to the other wall.

The Most Holy Place, the Holy Place, and the porch by the courtyard 16 had wood paneling on all the walls. All the windows and doors had wood trim around them. By the doorway, the Temple had wood paneling from the floor up to the windows and up to the part of the wall 17 over the doorway.

On all the walls in the inner room and the outer room of the Temple were carvings 18 of Cherub angels and palm trees. A palm tree was between each Cherub angel. Every Cherub angel had two faces. 19 One face was a man’s face looking toward the palm tree on one side. The other face was a lion’s face looking toward the palm tree on the other side. They were carved all around on the Temple. 20 From the floor to the area above the door, Cherub angels and palm trees were carved on all walls of the Holy Place.

21 The walls on either side of the Holy Place were square. In front of the Most Holy Place, there was something that looked like 22 an altar made from wood. It was 3 cubits [ m ] high and 2 cubits long. Its corners, its base, and its sides were wood. The man said to me, “This is the table that is before the Lord .”

23 Both the Holy Place and the Most Holy Place had a double door. 24 Each of the doors was made from two smaller doors. Each door was really two swinging doors. 25 Also Cherub angels and palm trees were carved on the doors of the Holy Place. They were like those carved on the walls. There was a wood roof over the front of the porch. 26 There were windows with frames around them and palm trees on the walls on both sides of the porch, on the roof over the porch, and on the rooms around the Temple.

41 Afterward he brought me to the temple, and measured the posts, six cubits broad on the one side, and six cubits broad on the other side, which was the breadth of the tabernacle.

2 And the breadth of the door was ten cubits; and the sides of the door were five cubits on the one side, and five cubits on the other side: and he measured the length thereof, forty cubits: and the breadth, twenty cubits.

3 Then went he inward, and measured the post of the door, two cubits; and the door, six cubits; and the breadth of the door, seven cubits.

4 So he measured the length thereof, twenty cubits; and the breadth, twenty cubits, before the temple: and he said unto me, This is the most holy place.

5 After he measured the wall of the house, six cubits; and the breadth of every side chamber, four cubits, round about the house on every side.

6 And the side chambers were three, one over another, and thirty in order; and they entered into the wall which was of the house for the side chambers round about, that they might have hold, but they had not hold in the wall of the house.

7 And there was an enlarging, and a winding about still upward to the side chambers: for the winding about of the house went still upward round about the house: therefore the breadth of the house was still upward, and so increased from the lowest chamber to the highest by the midst.

8 I saw also the height of the house round about: the foundations of the side chambers were a full reed of six great cubits.

9 The thickness of the wall, which was for the side chamber without, was five cubits: and that which was left was the place of the side chambers that were within.

10 And between the chambers was the wideness of twenty cubits round about the house on every side.

11 And the doors of the side chambers were toward the place that was left, one door toward the north, and another door toward the south: and the breadth of the place that was left was five cubits round about.

12 Now the building that was before the separate place at the end toward the west was seventy cubits broad; and the wall of the building was five cubits thick round about, and the length thereof ninety cubits.

13 So he measured the house, an hundred cubits long; and the separate place, and the building, with the walls thereof, an hundred cubits long;

14 Also the breadth of the face of the house, and of the separate place toward the east, an hundred cubits.

15 And he measured the length of the building over against the separate place which was behind it, and the galleries thereof on the one side and on the other side, an hundred cubits, with the inner temple, and the porches of the court;

16 The door posts, and the narrow windows, and the galleries round about on their three stories, over against the door, cieled with wood round about, and from the ground up to the windows, and the windows were covered;

17 To that above the door, even unto the inner house, and without, and by all the wall round about within and without, by measure.

18 And it was made with cherubims and palm trees, so that a palm tree was between a cherub and a cherub; and every cherub had two faces;

19 So that the face of a man was toward the palm tree on the one side, and the face of a young lion toward the palm tree on the other side: it was made through all the house round about.

20 From the ground unto above the door were cherubims and palm trees made, and on the wall of the temple.

21 The posts of the temple were squared, and the face of the sanctuary; the appearance of the one as the appearance of the other.

22 The altar of wood was three cubits high, and the length thereof two cubits; and the corners thereof, and the length thereof, and the walls thereof, were of wood: and he said unto me, This is the table that is before the Lord .

23 And the temple and the sanctuary had two doors.

24 And the doors had two leaves apiece, two turning leaves; two leaves for the one door, and two leaves for the other door.

25 And there were made on them, on the doors of the temple, cherubims and palm trees, like as were made upon the walls; and there were thick planks upon the face of the porch without.

26 And there were narrow windows and palm trees on the one side and on the other side, on the sides of the porch, and upon the side chambers of the house, and thick planks.

The Inner Temple

41 Then he ( A ) brought me to the ( B ) sanctuary, and he measured the ( C ) side pillars: six [ a ] cubits wide on each side was the width of the [ b ] side pillar. 2 The width of the entrance was ten cubits and the [ c ] sides of the entrance were five cubits on each side. He also measured [ d ] the length of the sanctuary, ( D ) forty cubits, and the width, ( E ) twenty cubits. 3 Then he went [ e ] ( F ) inside and measured each ( G ) side pillar of the doorway, two cubits, and the doorway, six cubits high ; and the width of the doorway, seven cubits. 4 And he measured its length, ( H ) twenty cubits, and the width, twenty cubits, before the ( I ) sanctuary; and he said to me, “This is the ( J ) Most Holy Place.”

5 Then he measured the wall of the [ f ] temple, six cubits; and the width of the ( K ) side chambers, four cubits, all around the house on every side. 6 ( L ) The side chambers were in three stories , [ g ] one above another, and [ h ] thirty in each story; and [ i ] the side chambers ( M ) extended to the wall which stood on [ j ] their inward side all around, so that they could be attached, but not be attached to the wall of the temple itself . 7 And the side chambers surrounding the temple were wider at each successive story. Because the ( N ) structure surrounding the temple went upward by stages on all sides of the temple, for that reason the width of the temple increased as it went higher; and so one went up from the lowest story to the highest by way of the [ k ] second story . 8 I saw also that the house had a raised [ l ] platform all around; the foundations of the side chambers were a full [ m ] rod of ( O ) six [ n ] long cubits in height . 9 The [ o ] thickness of the outer wall of the side chambers was five cubits. But the ( P ) free space between the side chambers belonging to the temple 10 and the outer ( Q ) chambers was twenty cubits in width around the temple on every side. 11 The [ p ] doorways of the side [ q ] chambers toward the ( R ) free space consisted of one doorway toward the north, and another doorway toward the south; and the width of the ( S ) free space was five cubits all around.

12 The ( T ) building that was in front of the ( U ) separate area at the side toward the west was seventy cubits wide; and the wall of the building was five cubits [ r ] thick all around, and its length was ninety cubits.

13 Then he measured the temple, a ( V ) hundred cubits long; the ( W ) separate area with the ( X ) building and its walls were also a ( Y ) hundred cubits long. 14 Also the width of the front of the temple and that of the separate [ s ] areas along the east side totaled a hundred cubits.

15 And he measured the length of the ( Z ) building [ t ] along the front of the ( AA ) separate area behind it, with a [ u ] ( AB ) gallery on each side, a hundred cubits; he also measured the inner sanctuary and the porches of the courtyard. 16 The ( AC ) thresholds, the [ v ] ( AD ) latticed windows, and the [ w ] ( AE ) galleries all around their ( AF ) three stories , opposite the threshold, were ( AG ) paneled with wood all around, and from the ground to the windows (but the windows were covered), 17 over the entrance, and to the inner house, and on the outside, and on all the wall all around inside and outside, by measurement. 18 It was [ x ] carved with ( AH ) cherubim and ( AI ) palm trees; and a palm tree was between cherub and cherub, and every cherub had two faces: 19 a ( AJ ) human face toward the palm tree on one side and a young ( AK ) lion’s face toward the palm tree on the other side; they were [ y ] carved on all the house all around. 20 From the ground to above the entrance ( AL ) cherubim and ( AM ) palm trees were [ z ] carved, as well as on the wall of the sanctuary.

21 The ( AN ) doorposts of the ( AO ) sanctuary were square; as for the front of the inner [ aa ] sanctuary, the appearance of one doorpost was like that of the other . 22 The ( AP ) altar was of wood, three cubits high, and its length two cubits; its corners, its [ ab ] base, and its [ ac ] sides were of wood. And he said to me, “This is the ( AQ ) table that is before the Lord .” 23 The ( AR ) sanctuary and the inner [ ad ] ( AS ) sanctuary each had a double ( AT ) door. 24 Each of the doors had two leaves, two [ ae ] ( AU ) swinging leaves; two leaves for one door and two leaves for the other. 25 Also there were [ af ] carved on them, on the doors of the main room, ( AV ) cherubim and ( AW ) palm trees like those [ ag ] carved on the walls; and there was a [ ah ] ( AX ) threshold of wood on the front of the porch outside. 26 And there were [ ai ] ( AY ) latticed windows and ( AZ ) palm trees on one side and on the other, on the sides of the ( BA ) porch; the same were on the ( BB ) side chambers of the house and the [ aj ] thresholds.

41 Then the man brought me to the main hall ( A ) and measured the jambs; the width of the jambs was six cubits [ a ] on each side. [ b ] 2 The entrance was ten cubits [ c ] wide, and the projecting walls on each side of it were five cubits [ d ] wide. He also measured the main hall; it was forty cubits long and twenty cubits wide. [ e ] ( B )

3 Then he went into the inner sanctuary and measured the jambs of the entrance; each was two cubits [ f ] wide. The entrance was six cubits wide, and the projecting walls on each side of it were seven cubits [ g ] wide. 4 And he measured the length of the inner sanctuary; it was twenty cubits, and its width was twenty cubits across the end of the main hall. ( C ) He said to me, “This is the Most Holy Place. ( D )

5 Then he measured the wall of the temple; it was six cubits thick, and each side room around the temple was four cubits [ h ] wide. 6 The side rooms were on three levels, one above another, thirty ( E ) on each level. There were ledges all around the wall of the temple to serve as supports for the side rooms, so that the supports were not inserted into the wall of the temple. ( F ) 7 The side rooms all around the temple were wider at each successive level. The structure surrounding the temple was built in ascending stages, so that the rooms widened as one went upward. A stairway ( G ) went up from the lowest floor to the top floor through the middle floor.

8 I saw that the temple had a raised base all around it, forming the foundation of the side rooms. It was the length of the rod, six long cubits. 9 The outer wall of the side rooms was five cubits thick. The open area between the side rooms of the temple 10 and the priests’ rooms was twenty cubits wide all around the temple. 11 There were entrances to the side rooms from the open area, one on the north and another on the south; and the base adjoining the open area was five cubits wide all around.

12 The building facing the temple courtyard on the west side was seventy cubits [ i ] wide. The wall of the building was five cubits thick all around, and its length was ninety cubits. [ j ]

13 Then he measured the temple; it was a hundred cubits [ k ] long, and the temple courtyard and the building with its walls were also a hundred cubits long. 14 The width of the temple courtyard on the east, including the front of the temple, was a hundred cubits. ( H )

15 Then he measured the length of the building facing the courtyard at the rear of the temple, including its galleries ( I ) on each side; it was a hundred cubits.

The main hall, the inner sanctuary and the portico facing the court, 16 as well as the thresholds and the narrow windows ( J ) and galleries around the three of them—everything beyond and including the threshold was covered with wood. The floor, the wall up to the windows, and the windows were covered. ( K ) 17 In the space above the outside of the entrance to the inner sanctuary and on the walls at regular intervals all around the inner and outer sanctuary 18 were carved ( L ) cherubim ( M ) and palm trees. ( N ) Palm trees alternated with cherubim. Each cherub had two faces: ( O ) 19 the face of a human being toward the palm tree on one side and the face of a lion toward the palm tree on the other. They were carved all around the whole temple. ( P ) 20 From the floor to the area above the entrance, cherubim and palm trees were carved on the wall of the main hall.

21 The main hall ( Q ) had a rectangular doorframe, and the one at the front of the Most Holy Place was similar. 22 There was a wooden altar ( R ) three cubits [ l ] high and two cubits square [ m ] ; its corners, its base [ n ] and its sides were of wood. The man said to me, “This is the table ( S ) that is before the Lord .” 23 Both the main hall ( T ) and the Most Holy Place had double doors. ( U ) 24 Each door had two leaves—two hinged leaves ( V ) for each door. 25 And on the doors of the main hall were carved cherubim and palm trees like those carved on the walls, and there was a wooden overhang on the front of the portico. 26 On the sidewalls of the portico were narrow windows with palm trees carved on each side. The side rooms of the temple also had overhangs. ( W )
