39 ‘Son of man, you must tell my message to Gog to warn him. Say to him, “This is what the Almighty Lord says: Listen! I am your enemy, Gog, prince of Meshech and Tubal. 2 I will turn you around and I will pull you along. I will bring you from the far away places in the north to attack the mountains of Israel. 3 Then I will knock your bow out of your left hand. I will cause your arrows to fall out of your right hand. 4 You will fall to the ground on Israel's mountains. You, your soldiers and the people who are with you will all die there. Vultures and wild animals will eat your dead bodies. 5 Your bodies will lie in the fields. I, the Almighty Lord , have said that this will happen.

6 I will send fires to burn in Magog. They will burn the people who live safely in towns on the coast of the sea. Then they will know that I am the Lord .

7 My people, Israel will know that my name is holy. No longer will I let them say bad things about me. And the nations round you will know that I, the Lord am the holy God in Israel. 8 I promise that I will cause this to happen. You can be sure that this day will come, says the Lord God.

I told you that this day would come.

9 Then those who live in Israel's towns will go out. They will pick up the weapons and they will burn them. They will burn the small and large shields, the heavy sticks, the throwing sticks and the sharp pointed sticks (swords). They will use them to make their fires. They will have enough wood for seven years of fires. 10 They will not have to go into the fields or forests to find wood. They will take away the things from those who took their things, says the Lord God.

11 They will bury Gog in the valley east of the sea. They will bury Gog and all his armies there. So men will not be able to walk through this valley. They will call it the valley of Hamon Gog (Gog's army).

12 Israel's people will need seven months to bury all the dead bodies. Then the land will be clean. 13 All the people in the country will bury the dead bodies. They will always remember that day, the day that I won the fight. They will give me glory, says the Lord God.

14 They will choose some men to clean the land. They will travel through all the country. Other men will bury the dead bodies that remain on the ground. They will begin to do this at the end of the seven months. 15 The men who walk through the country will find dead men's bones. They will put a sign by each one. Then the men who bury the bodies will bury them in the valley of Hamon Gog. 16 (A town called Hamonah is also there.) That is how they will make the land clean.”

17 Son of man, this is what the Lord God says: Shout to all kinds of birds and wild animals, “Come here from all the country to eat the meal that I have prepared for you. It is a great sacrifice on Israel's mountains. There you will eat meat and you will drink blood. 18 You will eat the meat of great men and you will drink the blood of kings. You will eat them like the fat sheep, cows and animals from Bashan that you eat. 19 At this sacrifice, you will eat so much fat that you cannot eat any more. You will drink so much blood that you become drunk. 20 I will give you horses and their riders to eat. I will give you great men and many kinds of soldiers to eat,” says the Lord God.

21 I will show my glory to all the nations. They will see that I can punish people. And they will know that I decide how and when to punish them. 22 From that time and for all the time after that, Israel's people will know that I am the Lord their God. 23 And the nations will know that I sent Israel's people away from their country. They will know that I punished my people because of their sin. They had not been faithful to me so I turned away from them. I let their enemies take them and kill them with swords. 24 I punished them because they had not kept themselves clean from sin. I hid myself from them because they had done so many evil things.’

25 So this is what the Lord God says. ‘Now I will bring back Jacob (Israel) from the countries where his people are prisoners. I will be kind to all Israel's people. And I will make them see that I am holy. 26 They will forget that they were ashamed. They will forget that they failed to keep their promises to me. That was when they lived in a safe country. In that country, nobody made them afraid. 27 I will bring them back from the lands where their enemies took them. The nations will see what I have done. So all the nations will know that I am holy. 28 Then Israel will know that I am the Lord their God. I sent my people away to far countries. But I will bring them all back to their own country. I will not leave any behind. 29 No longer will I turn away from them. I will pour my Spirit over Israel's people, says the Lord God.’

The Death of Gog and His Army

39 “Son of man, [ a ] speak against Gog for me. Tell him that this is what the Lord God says: ‘Gog, you are the most important leader of the countries Meshech and Tubal, but I am against you. 2 I will capture you and bring you back. I will bring you from the far north. I will bring you to fight against the mountains of Israel. 3 But I will knock your bow from your left hand and your arrows from your right hand. 4 You will be killed on the mountains of Israel. You, your groups of soldiers, and all the other nations with you will be killed in the battle. I will give you as food to every kind of bird that eats meat and to all the wild animals. 5 You will not enter the city. You will be killed out in the open fields. I have spoken!’” This is what the Lord God said.

6 “I will send fire against Magog and those people living along the coast. They think they are safe, but they will know that I am the Lord . 7 And I will make my holy name known among my people Israel. I will not let people ruin my holy name anymore. The nations will know that I am the Lord . They will know that I am the Holy One in Israel. 8 That time is coming! It will happen!” This is what the Lord God said. “That is the day I am talking about.

9 “At that time people living in the cities of Israel will go out to the fields. They will collect the enemy’s weapons and burn them. They will burn all the shields, bows and arrows, clubs and spears. They will use the weapons as firewood for seven years. 10 They will not have to gather wood from the fields or chop firewood from the forests because they will use the weapons as firewood. They will take the valuable things from the soldiers who wanted to steal from them. They will take the good things from the soldiers who took good things from them.” This is what the Lord God said.

11 “At that time I will choose a place in Israel to bury Gog. He will be buried in the Valley of the Travelers, [ b ] east of the Dead Sea. It will block the road for travelers, because Gog and all his army will be buried in that place. People will call it ‘The Valley of Gog’s Army.’ 12 It will take seven months for the family of Israel to bury them. They must do this to make the land pure. 13 The common people will bury the enemy soldiers, and the people will become famous on the day that I bring honor to myself.” The Lord God said those things.

14 “Workers will be given a full-time job burying the dead soldiers to make the land pure. The workers will work for seven months. They will go around looking for dead bodies. 15 They will go around looking, and if anyone sees a bone, a marker will be put up by it. The sign will stay there until the gravediggers come and bury the bone in the Valley of Gog’s Army. 16 The city of the dead will be named Hamonah. [ c ] In this way they will make the country pure.”

17 This is what the Lord God said: “Son of man, speak to all the birds and wild animals for me. Tell them, ‘Come here! Come here! Gather around. Come eat this sacrifice I am preparing for you. There will be a very big sacrifice on the mountains of Israel. Come, eat the meat and drink the blood. 18 You will eat the meat from the bodies of powerful soldiers and drink the blood from world leaders. They will be like rams, lambs, goats, and fat bulls from Bashan. 19 You can eat all the fat you want and drink blood until you are full. You will eat and drink from my sacrifice, which I will kill for you. 20 You will have plenty of meat to eat at my table. There will be horses and chariot drivers, powerful soldiers, and all the other fighting men.’” This is what the Lord God said.

21 “I will let the other nations see what I have done, and they will begin to respect me! They will see my power that I used against the enemy. 22 Then from that day on, the family of Israel will know that I am the Lord their God. 23 And the nations will know why the family of Israel was carried away as prisoners to other countries. They will learn that my people turned against me, so I turned away from them. I let their enemies defeat them, so my people were killed in battle. 24 They sinned and made themselves filthy, so I punished them for the things they did. I turned away from them and refused to help them.”

25 So this is what the Lord God says: “Now I will bring the family of Jacob back from captivity. I will have mercy on the whole family of Israel. I will show my strong feelings for my holy name. 26 The people will forget their shame and all the times they turned against me. They will live in safety on their own land. No one will make them afraid. 27 I will bring my people back from other countries. I will gather them from the lands of their enemies. Then many nations will see how holy I am. 28 They will know that I am the Lord their God. That is because I made them leave their homes and go as prisoners to other countries. But then I gathered them together again and brought them back to their own land. 29 I will pour out my Spirit on the family of Israel, and I will never turn away from my people again.” This is what the Lord God said.

Footnotes

  1. Ezekiel 39:1 Son of man This was usually just a way of saying “a person” or “a human being.” Here, it is a way of addressing Ezekiel. Also in verse 17.
  2. Ezekiel 39:11 Valley of the Travelers This is a wordplay on the name Arabah Valley.
  3. Ezekiel 39:16 Hamonah This Hebrew word means “crowd.”

39 Therefore, thou son of man, prophesy against Gog, and say, Thus saith the Lord God ; Behold, I am against thee, O Gog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal:

2 And I will turn thee back, and leave but the sixth part of thee, and will cause thee to come up from the north parts, and will bring thee upon the mountains of Israel:

3 And I will smite thy bow out of thy left hand, and will cause thine arrows to fall out of thy right hand.

4 Thou shalt fall upon the mountains of Israel, thou, and all thy bands, and the people that is with thee: I will give thee unto the ravenous birds of every sort, and to the beasts of the field to be devoured.

5 Thou shalt fall upon the open field: for I have spoken it, saith the Lord God .

6 And I will send a fire on Magog, and among them that dwell carelessly in the isles: and they shall know that I am the Lord .

7 So will I make my holy name known in the midst of my people Israel; and I will not let them pollute my holy name any more: and the heathen shall know that I am the Lord , the Holy One in Israel.

8 Behold, it is come, and it is done, saith the Lord God ; this is the day whereof I have spoken.

9 And they that dwell in the cities of Israel shall go forth, and shall set on fire and burn the weapons, both the shields and the bucklers, the bows and the arrows, and the handstaves, and the spears, and they shall burn them with fire seven years:

10 So that they shall take no wood out of the field, neither cut down any out of the forests; for they shall burn the weapons with fire: and they shall spoil those that spoiled them, and rob those that robbed them, saith the Lord God .

11 And it shall come to pass in that day, that I will give unto Gog a place there of graves in Israel, the valley of the passengers on the east of the sea: and it shall stop the noses of the passengers: and there shall they bury Gog and all his multitude: and they shall call it The valley of Hamongog.

12 And seven months shall the house of Israel be burying of them, that they may cleanse the land.

13 Yea, all the people of the land shall bury them; and it shall be to them a renown the day that I shall be glorified, saith the Lord God .

14 And they shall sever out men of continual employment, passing through the land to bury with the passengers those that remain upon the face of the earth, to cleanse it: after the end of seven months shall they search.

15 And the passengers that pass through the land, when any seeth a man's bone, then shall he set up a sign by it, till the buriers have buried it in the valley of Hamongog.

16 And also the name of the city shall be Hamonah. Thus shall they cleanse the land.

17 And, thou son of man, thus saith the Lord God ; Speak unto every feathered fowl, and to every beast of the field, Assemble yourselves, and come; gather yourselves on every side to my sacrifice that I do sacrifice for you, even a great sacrifice upon the mountains of Israel, that ye may eat flesh, and drink blood.

18 Ye shall eat the flesh of the mighty, and drink the blood of the princes of the earth, of rams, of lambs, and of goats, of bullocks, all of them fatlings of Bashan.

19 And ye shall eat fat till ye be full, and drink blood till ye be drunken, of my sacrifice which I have sacrificed for you.

20 Thus ye shall be filled at my table with horses and chariots, with mighty men, and with all men of war, saith the Lord God .

21 And I will set my glory among the heathen, and all the heathen shall see my judgment that I have executed, and my hand that I have laid upon them.

22 So the house of Israel shall know that I am the Lord their God from that day and forward.

23 And the heathen shall know that the house of Israel went into captivity for their iniquity: because they trespassed against me, therefore hid I my face from them, and gave them into the hand of their enemies: so fell they all by the sword.

24 According to their uncleanness and according to their transgressions have I done unto them, and hid my face from them.

25 Therefore thus saith the Lord God ; Now will I bring again the captivity of Jacob, and have mercy upon the whole house of Israel, and will be jealous for my holy name;

26 After that they have borne their shame, and all their trespasses whereby they have trespassed against me, when they dwelt safely in their land, and none made them afraid.

27 When I have brought them again from the people, and gathered them out of their enemies' lands, and am sanctified in them in the sight of many nations;

28 Then shall they know that I am the Lord their God, which caused them to be led into captivity among the heathen: but I have gathered them unto their own land, and have left none of them any more there.

29 Neither will I hide my face any more from them: for I have poured out my spirit upon the house of Israel, saith the Lord God .

Prophecy against Gog—Invaders Destroyed

39 “And ( A ) you, son of man, prophesy against Gog and say, ‘This is what the Lord [ a ] God says: “Behold, I am against you, Gog, chief prince of Meshech and Tubal; 2 and I will turn you around, lead you on a rope, take you up from the remotest parts of the north, and bring you against the mountains of Israel. 3 Then I will ( B ) strike your bow from your left hand and make your arrows fall from your right hand. 4 You will ( C ) fall on the mountains of Israel, you and all your troops, and the peoples who are with you; I will give you as ( D ) food to every [ b ] kind of predatory bird and animal of the field. 5 You will fall on the [ c ] open field; for it is I who have spoken,” declares the Lord God . 6 “And I will send ( E ) fire upon Magog and those who inhabit the ( F ) coastlands in safety; and they will know that I am the Lord .

7 “And I will make My ( G ) holy name known in the midst of My people Israel; and I will not allow My holy name to be ( H ) profaned anymore. But the ( I ) nations will know that I am the Lord , the ( J ) Holy One in Israel. 8 Behold, it is coming and it shall be done,” declares the Lord God . “That is the day of which I have spoken.

9 “Then those who inhabit the cities of Israel will ( K ) go out and make ( L ) fires with the weapons and burn them , both [ d ] bucklers and shields, bows and arrows, war clubs and spears, and for seven years they will make fires of them. 10 They will not take wood from the field or gather firewood from the forests, because they will make fires with the weapons; and they will take the spoils of those who plundered them and seize the ( M ) plunder of those who plundered them,” declares the Lord God .

11 “On that day I will give Gog a burial place there in Israel, the valley of those who pass by east of the sea, and it will block the way of those who would pass by. So they will bury Gog there with all his horde, and they will call it the Valley of [ e ] Hamon-gog. 12 For seven months the house of Israel will be burying them in order to ( N ) cleanse the land. 13 And all the people of the land will bury them ; and it will be [ f ] to their ( O ) renown on the day that I ( P ) appear in My glory,” declares the Lord God . 14 “They will also select men who will constantly pass through the land, ( Q ) burying those who were passing through, those left on the surface of the ground, in order to cleanse it. At the end of seven months they will conduct a search. 15 As those who pass through the land pass through and anyone sees a human bone, then he will [ g ] set up a marker by it until the burial detail has buried it in the Valley of [ h ] Hamon-gog. 16 And even the name of the city will be Hamonah. So they will cleanse the land.”’

17 “Now as for you, son of man, this is what the Lord God says: ‘Say to every [ i ] kind of ( R ) bird and to every ( S ) animal of the field: “Assemble and come, gather from every direction to My sacrifice, which I am going to ( T ) sacrifice for you as a great sacrifice on the mountains of Israel; and you will eat flesh and drink blood. 18 You will ( U ) eat the flesh of warriors and drink the blood of the leaders of the earth, as though they were ( V ) rams, lambs, goats, and ( W ) bulls, all of them fattened livestock of ( X ) Bashan. 19 So you will eat fat until you are full, and drink blood until you are drunk, from My sacrifice which I have sacrificed for you. 20 You will eat your fill at My table with ( Y ) horses and charioteers, with warriors and all the men of war,” declares the Lord God .

21 “And I will place My ( Z ) glory among the nations; and all the nations will see My judgment which I have executed, and My hand which I have laid on them. 22 And the house of Israel will ( AA ) know that I am the Lord their God, from that day onward. 23 The nations will know that the house of Israel went into exile for their ( AB ) wrongdoing, because they were disloyal to Me, and I ( AC ) hid My face from them; so I handed them over to their adversaries, and all of them fell by the sword. 24 ( AD ) In accordance with their uncleanness and their offenses I dealt with them, and I hid My face from them.”’”

Israel Restored

25 Therefore this is what the Lord God says: “Now I will ( AE ) restore the fortunes of Jacob and have mercy on all the ( AF ) house of Israel; and I will be ( AG ) jealous for My holy name. 26 They will [ j ] ( AH ) forget their disgrace and all their [ k ] treachery which they perpetrated against Me, when they ( AI ) live securely on their own land with ( AJ ) no one to make them afraid. 27 When I ( AK ) bring them back from the peoples and gather them from the lands of their enemies, then I shall ( AL ) show Myself holy [ l ] through them in the sight of the many nations. 28 Then they will know that I am the Lord their God because I made them go into exile among the nations, and then I gathered them again to their own land; and I will leave none of them there any longer. 29 I will not hide My face from them any longer, for I will have ( AM ) poured out My Spirit on the house of Israel,” declares the Lord God .

39 “Son of man, prophesy against Gog ( A ) and say: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: I am against you, Gog, chief prince of [ a ] Meshek ( B ) and Tubal. ( C ) 2 I will turn you around and drag you along. I will bring you from the far north ( D ) and send you against the mountains of Israel. ( E ) 3 Then I will strike your bow ( F ) from your left hand and make your arrows ( G ) drop from your right hand. 4 On the mountains of Israel you will fall, you and all your troops and the nations with you. I will give you as food to all kinds of carrion birds ( H ) and to the wild animals. ( I ) 5 You will fall in the open field, for I have spoken, declares the Sovereign Lord . ( J ) 6 I will send fire ( K ) on Magog ( L ) and on those who live in safety in the coastlands, ( M ) and they will know ( N ) that I am the Lord .

7 “‘I will make known my holy name among my people Israel. I will no longer let my holy name be profaned, ( O ) and the nations will know ( P ) that I the Lord am the Holy One in Israel. ( Q ) 8 It is coming! It will surely take place, declares the Sovereign Lord . This is the day ( R ) I have spoken of.

9 “‘Then those who live in the towns of Israel will go out and use the weapons for fuel and burn them up—the small and large shields, the bows and arrows, ( S ) the war clubs and spears. For seven years they will use them for fuel. ( T ) 10 They will not need to gather wood from the fields or cut it from the forests, because they will use the weapons for fuel. And they will plunder ( U ) those who plundered them and loot those who looted them, declares the Sovereign Lord . ( V )

11 “‘On that day I will give Gog a burial place in Israel, in the valley of those who travel east of the Sea. It will block the way of travelers, because Gog and all his hordes will be buried ( W ) there. So it will be called the Valley of Hamon Gog. [ b ] ( X )

12 “‘For seven months the Israelites will be burying them in order to cleanse the land. ( Y ) 13 All the people of the land will bury them, and the day I display my glory ( Z ) will be a memorable day for them, declares the Sovereign Lord . 14 People will be continually employed in cleansing the land. They will spread out across the land and, along with others, they will bury any bodies that are lying on the ground.

“‘After the seven months they will carry out a more detailed search. 15 As they go through the land, anyone who sees a human bone will leave a marker beside it until the gravediggers bury it in the Valley of Hamon Gog, 16 near a town called Hamonah. [ c ] And so they will cleanse the land.’

17 “Son of man, this is what the Sovereign Lord says: Call out to every kind of bird ( AA ) and all the wild animals: ‘Assemble and come together from all around to the sacrifice I am preparing for you, the great sacrifice on the mountains of Israel. There you will eat flesh and drink blood. ( AB ) 18 You will eat the flesh of mighty men and drink the blood of the princes of the earth as if they were rams and lambs, goats and bulls—all of them fattened animals from Bashan. ( AC ) 19 At the sacrifice ( AD ) I am preparing for you, you will eat fat till you are glutted and drink blood till you are drunk. 20 At my table you will eat your fill of horses and riders, mighty men and soldiers of every kind,’ declares the Sovereign Lord . ( AE )

21 “I will display my glory among the nations, and all the nations will see the punishment I inflict and the hand I lay on them. ( AF ) 22 From that day forward the people of Israel will know that I am the Lord their God. 23 And the nations will know that the people of Israel went into exile for their sin, because they were unfaithful to me. So I hid my face from them and handed them over to their enemies, and they all fell by the sword. ( AG ) 24 I dealt with them according to their uncleanness and their offenses, and I hid my face from them. ( AH )

25 “Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says: I will now restore the fortunes of Jacob [ d ] ( AI ) and will have compassion ( AJ ) on all the people of Israel, and I will be zealous for my holy name. ( AK ) 26 They will forget their shame and all the unfaithfulness they showed toward me when they lived in safety ( AL ) in their land with no one to make them afraid. ( AM ) 27 When I have brought them back from the nations and have gathered them from the countries of their enemies, I will be proved holy through them in the sight of many nations. ( AN ) 28 Then they will know that I am the Lord their God, for though I sent them into exile among the nations, I will gather them ( AO ) to their own land, not leaving any behind. ( AP ) 29 I will no longer hide my face ( AQ ) from them, for I will pour out my Spirit ( AR ) on the people of Israel, declares the Sovereign Lord . ( AS )
