- Ezekiel Chapter 28
28 The Lord gave this message to me: 2 ‘Son of man, say this to the ruler of Tyre. “This is what the Almighty Lord says:
You are a very proud man.
You say, ‘I am a god and Tyre is my throne.
I rule over all the seas around me.’
But, whatever you think, you are only a man. You are not a god.
3 You think that you are wiser than Daniel,
and that you know all secrets.
4 You have been wise and clever enough to make yourself rich.
You have stored much gold and silver in your palace.
5 Because you are a clever trader,
you have become even richer.
And because of your riches, you have become very proud.
6 So this is what the Almighty Lord says:
You think that you are as wise as a god.
7 So listen! I will bring a foreign army to attack you.
They will be a very cruel enemy.
They will use their swords to destroy your beautiful city.
They will spoil the beautiful things that you have used your wisdom to get for yourselves.
8 They will kill you violently in battle,
and the sea will become your grave.
9 When your enemies attack you,
you will no longer say, ‘I am a god.’
When they are ready to kill you,
you will know that you are only human.
10 Foreign people will kill you.
You will die like people who do not belong to me.
I, the Almighty Lord have said this.” ’
11 The Lord gave this message to me: 12 ‘Son of man, sing this funeral song about the king of Tyre. Tell him, “This is what the Almighty Lord says:
At one time, you were the example of a good man.
You were completely wise and beautiful.
13 You lived in God's beautiful garden, Eden.
You wore valuable jewels on your clothes.
The jewels were ruby, topaz, emerald,
chrysolite, onyx, jasper,
sapphire, turquoise and beryl. [ a ]
They were fixed to pieces of gold.
They were ready for you to wear on the day that you were born.
14 I put you there with a cherub to be your guard.
You lived on my holy mountain.
You walked among the stones that burned with fire.
15 Everything that you did was completely good
from the day that you were born.
But later, you started to do wicked things.
16 As a trader, you bought and sold many things.
As a result, you became violent and you did evil things.
So I sent you away in shame.
I would not allow you to remain on my mountain.
The cherub that had been your guard chased you out.
You could no longer walk among the stones that burned with fire.
17 But because you were so beautiful, you were very proud.
You used your wisdom to do bad things,
because you loved to have beautiful things.
So I threw you down to the ground.
I let other kings see what had happened to you.
18 As a trader, you did many wrong things to cheat people.
Your holy places became unclean.
So I caused fire to completely destroy your city.
Everyone could see that only ashes remained on the ground.
19 All the people of other nations who knew you are very afraid.
They have seen the terrible thing that has happened to you.
You have come to a complete end and you will never return.” ’
20 The Lord gave this message to me: 21 ‘Son of man, turn and look towards Sidon. Tell them my message to warn them. 22 Say, “This is what the Almighty Lord says:
Listen! I have become your enemy, Sidon.
I will show your people how great I am.
Then they will know that I am the Lord .
I will punish your people for their sins
so that they know that I am a holy God.
23 I will cause disease to kill people in the city.
Enemies will attack from all around the city,
and people will die in the streets.
Then they will know that I am the Lord .
24 Israel will no longer suffer because of the nations that are around them. Those nations will not be like sharp thorns that give the Israelites pain. They will not insult the Israelites any more. Then they will know that I am the Almighty Lord .
25 This is what the Almighty Lord says: I will bring Israel's people back from the countries where I sent them to live. Then all the nations will see that I am a holy God for my people. My people will live in their own land that I gave to my servant, Jacob. [ c ] 26 They will live there safely. They will build houses and they will plant vineyards. I will punish all the nations around them who have insulted them. Then my people will live safely in their homes. And they will know that I am the Lord their God.” ’
28 The word of the Lord came to me. He said, 2 “Son of man, [ a ] say to the ruler of Tyre, ‘This is what the Lord God says:
“‘You are very proud!
And you say, “I am a god!
I sit on the seat of gods
in the middle of the seas.”
“‘But you are a man and not God!
You only think you are a god.
3 You think you are wiser than Daniel [ b ]
and no secret is hidden from you.
4 Through your wisdom and understanding
you have gotten riches for yourself.
And you put gold and silver
in your treasuries.
5 Through your great wisdom and trade,
you have made your riches grow.
And now you are proud
because of those riches.
6 “‘So this is what the Lord God says:
Tyre, you thought you were like a god.
7 I will bring strangers to fight against you.
They are most terrible among the nations!
They will pull out their swords
and use them against the beautiful things your wisdom brought you.
They will ruin your glory.
8 They will bring you down to the grave.
You will be like a sailor who died at sea.
9 That person will kill you.
Will you still say, “I am a god”?
No, he will have you in his power!
You will see that you are a man, not God!
10 Strangers will treat you like a foreigner [ c ] and kill you,
because I gave the command!’”
This is what the Lord God said.
11 The word of the Lord came to me. He said, 12 “Son of man, sing this sad song about the king of Tyre. Say to him, ‘This is what the Lord God says:
“‘You were the perfect man—
so full of wisdom and perfectly handsome.
13 You were in Eden, the garden of God.
You had every precious stone—
rubies, topaz, and diamonds,
beryls, onyx, and jasper,
sapphires, turquoise, and emeralds.
And each of these stones was set in gold.
You were given this beauty on the day you were created.
God made you strong.
14 You were one of the chosen Cherubs
who spread your wings over my throne.
I put you on the holy mountain of God.
You walked among the jewels that sparkled like fire.
15 You were good and honest when I created you,
but then you became evil.
16 Your business brought you many riches.
But they also put cruelty inside you, and you sinned.
So I treated you like something unclean
and threw you off the mountain of God.
You were one of the chosen Cherubs
who spread your wings over my throne.
But I forced you to leave the jewels
that sparkled like fire.
17 Your beauty made you proud.
Your glory ruined your wisdom.
So I threw you down to the ground,
and now other kings stare at you.
18 You did many wrong things.
You were a very crooked merchant.
In this way you made the holy places unclean.
So I brought fire from inside you.
It burned you!
You burned to ashes on the ground.
Now everyone can see your shame.
19 “‘All the people in other nations
were shocked about what happened to you.
What happened to you will make people very afraid.
You are finished!’”
20 The word of the Lord came to me. He said, 21 “Son of man, look toward Sidon and speak for me against that place. 22 Say, ‘This is what the Lord God says:
“‘I am against you, Sidon!
Your people will learn to respect me.
I will punish Sidon.
Then people will know that I am the Lord .
Then they will learn that I am holy,
and they will treat me that way.
23 I will send disease and death to Sidon,
and many people inside the city will die.
Soldiers outside the city will kill many people.
Then people will know that I am the Lord !
24 “‘Then the surrounding nations that hate Israel will no longer be like stinging nettles [ d ] and painful thorns. And they will know that I am the Lord God .’”
25 This is what the Lord God said: “I scattered the people of Israel among other nations, but I will gather the family of Israel together again. Then the nations will know that I am holy, and they will treat me that way. At that time the people of Israel will live in their land—I gave that land to my servant Jacob. 26 They will live safely in the land. They will build houses and plant vineyards. I will punish the nations around them that hated them. Then the people of Israel will live in safety, and they will know that I am the Lord their God.”
28 The word of the Lord came again unto me, saying,
2 Son of man, say unto the prince of Tyrus, Thus saith the Lord God ; Because thine heart is lifted up, and thou hast said, I am a God, I sit in the seat of God, in the midst of the seas; yet thou art a man, and not God, though thou set thine heart as the heart of God:
3 Behold, thou art wiser than Daniel; there is no secret that they can hide from thee:
4 With thy wisdom and with thine understanding thou hast gotten thee riches, and hast gotten gold and silver into thy treasures:
5 By thy great wisdom and by thy traffick hast thou increased thy riches, and thine heart is lifted up because of thy riches:
6 Therefore thus saith the Lord God ; Because thou hast set thine heart as the heart of God;
7 Behold, therefore I will bring strangers upon thee, the terrible of the nations: and they shall draw their swords against the beauty of thy wisdom, and they shall defile thy brightness.
8 They shall bring thee down to the pit, and thou shalt die the deaths of them that are slain in the midst of the seas.
9 Wilt thou yet say before him that slayeth thee, I am God? but thou shalt be a man, and no God, in the hand of him that slayeth thee.
10 Thou shalt die the deaths of the uncircumcised by the hand of strangers: for I have spoken it, saith the Lord God .
11 Moreover the word of the Lord came unto me, saying,
12 Son of man, take up a lamentation upon the king of Tyrus, and say unto him, Thus saith the Lord God ; Thou sealest up the sum, full of wisdom, and perfect in beauty.
13 Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone was thy covering, the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created.
14 Thou art the anointed cherub that covereth; and I have set thee so: thou wast upon the holy mountain of God; thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire.
15 Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee.
16 By the multitude of thy merchandise they have filled the midst of thee with violence, and thou hast sinned: therefore I will cast thee as profane out of the mountain of God: and I will destroy thee, O covering cherub, from the midst of the stones of fire.
17 Thine heart was lifted up because of thy beauty, thou hast corrupted thy wisdom by reason of thy brightness: I will cast thee to the ground, I will lay thee before kings, that they may behold thee.
18 Thou hast defiled thy sanctuaries by the multitude of thine iniquities, by the iniquity of thy traffick; therefore will I bring forth a fire from the midst of thee, it shall devour thee, and I will bring thee to ashes upon the earth in the sight of all them that behold thee.
19 All they that know thee among the people shall be astonished at thee: thou shalt be a terror, and never shalt thou be any more.
20 Again the word of the Lord came unto me, saying,
21 Son of man, set thy face against Zidon, and prophesy against it,
22 And say, Thus saith the Lord God ; Behold, I am against thee, O Zidon; and I will be glorified in the midst of thee: and they shall know that I am the Lord , when I shall have executed judgments in her, and shall be sanctified in her.
23 For I will send into her pestilence, and blood into her streets; and the wounded shall be judged in the midst of her by the sword upon her on every side; and they shall know that I am the Lord .
24 And there shall be no more a pricking brier unto the house of Israel, nor any grieving thorn of all that are round about them, that despised them; and they shall know that I am the Lord God .
25 Thus saith the Lord God ; When I shall have gathered the house of Israel from the people among whom they are scattered, and shall be sanctified in them in the sight of the heathen, then shall they dwell in their land that I have given to my servant Jacob.
26 And they shall dwell safely therein, and shall build houses, and plant vineyards; yea, they shall dwell with confidence, when I have executed judgments upon all those that despise them round about them; and they shall know that I am the Lord their God.
28 The word of the Lord came again to me, saying, 2 “Son of man, say to the [ a ] leader of Tyre, ‘The Lord [ b ] God says this:
“Because your heart is haughty
And you have said, ‘ ( A ) I am a god,
I sit in the seat of [ c ] gods
In the heart of the seas’;
Yet you are a ( B ) mortal and not God,
Although you make your heart like the heart of God—
3 Behold, you are wiser than ( C ) Daniel;
There is no secret that is a match for you!
4 By your wisdom and understanding
You have acquired ( D ) riches for yourself
And have acquired gold and silver for your treasuries.
5 By your great wisdom, by your ( E ) trade
You have increased your riches,
And your ( F ) heart is haughty because of your riches—
6 Therefore this is what the Lord God says:
‘Because you have ( G ) made your heart
Like the heart of God,
7 Therefore, behold, I am going to bring ( H ) strangers against you,
The ( I ) most ruthless of the nations.
And they will draw their swords
Against the beauty of your wisdom
And profane your splendor.
8 They will bring you down to the pit,
And you will die the ( J ) death of those who are killed
In the heart of the seas.
9 Will you still say, “I am a god,”
In the presence of one who kills you,
Though you are a mortal and not God,
In the hands of those who wound you?
10 You will die the death of the ( K ) uncircumcised
By the hand of strangers,
For I have spoken!’ declares the Lord God !”’”
11 Again the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 12 “Son of man, ( L ) take up a song of mourning over the king of Tyre and say to him, ‘This is what the Lord God says:
“You [ d ] had the seal of [ e ] perfection,
Full of wisdom and perfect in beauty.
13 You were in ( M ) Eden, the garden of God;
( N ) Every precious stone was your covering:
The ( O ) ruby, the topaz and the diamond;
The beryl, the onyx and the jasper;
The lapis lazuli, the turquoise and the emerald;
And the gold, the workmanship of your [ f ] ( P ) settings and [ g ] sockets,
Was in you.
On the day that you were created
They were prepared.
14 You were the ( Q ) anointed cherub who [ h ] covers,
And I placed you there .
You were on the holy ( R ) mountain of God;
You walked in the midst of the ( S ) stones of fire.
15 You were ( T ) blameless in your ways
From the day you were created
Until ( U ) unrighteousness was found in you.
16 By the ( V ) abundance of your trade
[ i ] You were internally ( W ) filled with violence,
And you sinned;
Therefore I have cast you as profane
From the mountain of God.
And I have destroyed you, you [ j ] covering cherub,
From the midst of the stones of fire.
17 Your heart was haughty because of your ( X ) beauty;
You ( Y ) corrupted your wisdom by reason of your splendor.
I threw you to the ground;
I put you before ( Z ) kings,
That they may see you.
18 By the multitude of your wrongdoings,
In the unrighteousness of your trade
You profaned your sanctuaries.
Therefore I have brought ( AA ) fire from the midst of you;
It has consumed you,
And I have turned you to ( AB ) ashes on the earth
In the eyes of all who see you.
19 All who know you among the peoples
Are appalled at you;
You have become [ k ] ( AC ) terrified
And you will cease to be ( AD ) forever.”’”
20 And the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 21 “Son of man, ( AE ) set your face toward ( AF ) Sidon, prophesy against her 22 and say, ‘This is what the Lord God says:
“Behold, I am against you, Sidon,
And I will appear in My glory in your midst.
Then they will know that I am the Lord , when I ( AG ) execute judgments against her,
And I will reveal Myself as holy in her.
23 For ( AH ) I will send a plague to her
And blood to her streets,
And the ( AI ) wounded will [ l ] fall in her midst
By the sword upon her on every side;
Then they will know that I am the Lord .
24 And there will no longer be for the house of Israel a ( AJ ) painful thorn or a hurtful thorn bush from any surrounding them who despised them; then they will know that I am the Lord God .”
25 ‘This is what the Lord God says: “When I ( AK ) gather the house of Israel from the peoples among whom they are scattered, and show Myself holy among them in the sight of the nations, then they will ( AL ) live on their land which I gave to My servant Jacob. 26 They will ( AM ) live on it securely; and they will ( AN ) build houses, plant vineyards, and live securely when I ( AO ) execute judgments upon all around them who despise them. Then they will know that I am the Lord their God.”’”
28 The word of the Lord came to me: 2 “Son of man ( A ) , say to the ruler of Tyre, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says:
“‘In the pride of your heart
you say, “I am a god;
I sit on the throne ( B ) of a god
in the heart of the seas.” ( C )
But you are a mere mortal and not a god,
though you think you are as wise as a god. ( D )
3 Are you wiser than Daniel [ a ] ? ( E )
Is no secret hidden from you?
4 By your wisdom and understanding
you have gained wealth for yourself
and amassed gold and silver
in your treasuries. ( F )
5 By your great skill in trading ( G )
you have increased your wealth, ( H )
and because of your wealth
your heart has grown proud. ( I )
6 “‘Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says:
“‘Because you think you are wise,
as wise as a god,
7 I am going to bring foreigners against you,
the most ruthless of nations; ( J )
they will draw their swords against your beauty and wisdom ( K )
and pierce your shining splendor. ( L )
8 They will bring you down to the pit, ( M )
and you will die a violent death ( N )
in the heart of the seas. ( O )
9 Will you then say, “I am a god,”
in the presence of those who kill you?
You will be but a mortal, not a god, ( P )
in the hands of those who slay you. ( Q )
10 You will die the death of the uncircumcised ( R )
at the hands of foreigners.
I have spoken, declares the Sovereign Lord .’”
11 The word of the Lord came to me: 12 “Son of man, take up a lament ( S ) concerning the king of Tyre and say to him: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says:
“‘You were the seal of perfection,
full of wisdom and perfect in beauty. ( T )
13 You were in Eden, ( U )
the garden of God; ( V )
every precious stone ( W ) adorned you:
carnelian, chrysolite and emerald,
topaz, onyx and jasper,
lapis lazuli, turquoise ( X ) and beryl. [ b ]
Your settings and mountings [ c ] were made of gold;
on the day you were created they were prepared. ( Y )
14 You were anointed ( Z ) as a guardian cherub, ( AA )
for so I ordained you.
You were on the holy mount of God;
you walked among the fiery stones.
15 You were blameless in your ways
from the day you were created
till wickedness was found in you.
16 Through your widespread trade
you were filled with violence, ( AB )
and you sinned.
So I drove you in disgrace from the mount of God,
and I expelled you, guardian cherub, ( AC )
from among the fiery stones.
17 Your heart became proud ( AD )
on account of your beauty,
and you corrupted your wisdom
because of your splendor.
So I threw you to the earth;
I made a spectacle of you before kings. ( AE )
18 By your many sins and dishonest trade
you have desecrated your sanctuaries.
So I made a fire ( AF ) come out from you,
and it consumed you,
and I reduced you to ashes ( AG ) on the ground
in the sight of all who were watching. ( AH )
19 All the nations who knew you
are appalled ( AI ) at you;
you have come to a horrible end
and will be no more. ( AJ ) ’”
20 The word of the Lord came to me: 21 “Son of man, set your face against ( AK ) Sidon; ( AL ) prophesy against her 22 and say: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says:
“‘I am against you, Sidon,
and among you I will display my glory. ( AM )
You will know that I am the Lord ,
when I inflict punishment ( AN ) on you
and within you am proved to be holy. ( AO )
23 I will send a plague upon you
and make blood flow in your streets.
The slain will fall within you,
with the sword against you on every side.
Then you will know that I am the Lord . ( AP )
24 “‘No longer will the people of Israel have malicious neighbors who are painful briers and sharp thorns. ( AQ ) Then they will know that I am the Sovereign Lord .
25 “‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: When I gather ( AR ) the people of Israel from the nations where they have been scattered, ( AS ) I will be proved holy ( AT ) through them in the sight of the nations. Then they will live in their own land, which I gave to my servant Jacob. ( AU ) 26 They will live there in safety ( AV ) and will build houses and plant ( AW ) vineyards; they will live in safety when I inflict punishment ( AX ) on all their neighbors who maligned them. Then they will know that I am the Lord their God. ( AY ) ’”
