The Lord warns Tyre [ a ]

26 The Lord gave this message to me on the first day of the month, in the 11th year:

2 ‘Son of man, Tyre's people have said, “Good! An enemy has destroyed Jerusalem! Traders from that city went out to many nations. Now we will do that instead of them. We will become rich because Jerusalem is no longer a strong city.”

3 So this is what the Almighty Lord says: Listen! I have become your enemy, Tyre. I will bring many nations to attack you. They will be like the waves of the sea as they hit you. 4 They will destroy the walls of Tyre. They will knock down its strong towers. I will then remove all the stones that remain. The city will become a rock with nothing on it. 5 On that rock, in the middle of the sea, men will dry the nets that they use to catch fish. That is what I say, says the Almighty Lord . Armies from other nations will take Tyre's valuable things for themselves. 6 Soldiers will use their swords to kill people in the small towns on the coast near Tyre. Then people will know that I am the Lord .

7 This is what the Almighty Lord says: Listen! I will bring King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon to attack Tyre from the north. He is a powerful king. He will bring his great army with soldiers on horses and chariots. 8 His soldiers will destroy your towns and villages on the coast. They will build heaps of earth around your walls. They will hold up their shields like a wall as they attack you. 9 They will use heavy pieces of wood to knock down the city's walls. They will use their weapons to knock down the strong towers.

10 King Nebuchadnezzar's army will have many horses. As they attack you, the dirt from their feet will cover you. The noise of the riders on the horses and the chariots' wheels will cause the city's walls to shake. They will break through the city's gates and walls. 11 The horses will run along all the streets. The soldiers will kill your people with their swords. The strong pillars of your buildings will fall to the ground. 12 The soldiers will take your riches and valuable things for themselves. They will break down your walls. They will destroy your beautiful homes. They will throw into the sea all the wood and stones that remain from your buildings. 13 I will stop the noise of your songs. Nobody will hear the sound of your harps any longer. 14 Tyre will be a rock in the sea with no buildings on it. Men will dry their nets on it. Nobody will never build the city again. That is what I, the Almighty Lord , have said. So it will certainly happen!

15 This is what the Almighty Lord says to Tyre: All the people who live on the coast of the sea will hear the news. When they know that you have fallen to the ground, they will shake with fear. [ b ] They will hear the loud cries of your people when they die in the battle. 16 Then the rulers of the towns on the coast of the sea will be very sad. They will no longer sit on their thrones. They will remove their beautiful royal clothes. They will sit on the ground as they shake with fear. They will not stop shaking when they hear what has happened to you. 17 Then they will sing this funeral song about you:

“City that was famous for your great sailors,
now your power has gone!
In the past, you made many people afraid,
as your brave men travelled across the sea.
18 Now you have fallen to the ground
and people who live on the coast shake with fear.
Now your power has gone
and those people are very afraid.”

19 This is what the Almighty Lord says: I will make you an empty place, like cities where nobody lives. The great waves of the sea will completely cover you. 20 Then I will cause you to you to fall deep down into the earth. You will be part of the world of dead people who lived a long time ago. You will join other cities that became heaps of stones long ago. You will remain there. You will never again be a city in the world where people are alive. 21 I will cause terrible things to happen to you. You will come to a complete end. People will look for you, but they will never find you. That is what the Almighty Lord says.’

Footnotes

  1. 26:1 Tyre was a city in Phoenicia, which was to the north of Samaria. It was on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea. Part of Tyre was an island. A lot of rich traders lived there.
  2. 26:15 Many small nations along the coast and on the islands needed help from Tyre.

The Sad Message About Tyre

26 In the eleventh year of exile, [ a ] on the first day of the month, the word of the Lord came to me. He said, 2 “Son of man, [ b ] Tyre said bad things about Jerusalem: ‘Hurray! The city gate protecting the people is destroyed! The city gate is open for me. The city of Jerusalem is ruined, so I can get plenty of valuable things out of it!’”

3 So the Lord God says: “I am against you, Tyre! I will bring many nations to fight against you. They will come again and again, like waves on the beach.

4 “The enemy soldiers will destroy the walls of Tyre and pull down her towers. I will also scrape the topsoil from her land. I will make Tyre a bare rock. 5 Tyre will become a place by the sea for spreading fishing nets. I have spoken!” The Lord God says, “Tyre will be like the valuable things soldiers take in war. 6 Her daughters on the mainland will be killed in battle. Then they will know that I am the Lord .”

Nebuchadnezzar Will Attack Tyre

7 This is what the Lord God says: “I will bring an enemy from the north against Tyre. That enemy is Nebuchadnezzar, the great king of Babylon! He will bring a very large army. There will be horses, chariots, horse soldiers and many other soldiers. They will be from many different nations. 8 Nebuchadnezzar will kill your daughters on the mainland. He will build towers to attack your city. He will build a dirt road around your city and a dirt road leading up to the walls. 9 He will bring the logs to break down your walls. He will use picks and break down your towers. 10 There will be so many of his horses that the dust from them will cover you. Your walls will shake at the noise of horse soldiers, wagons, and chariots when the king of Babylon enters the city through your city gates. Yes, they will come into your city because its walls will be pulled down. 11 The king of Babylon will come riding through your city. His horses’ hoofs [ c ] will come pounding over your streets. He will kill your people with swords. The strong columns in your city will fall to the ground. 12 Nebuchadnezzar’s men will take away your riches. They will take the things you wanted to sell. They will break down your walls and destroy your pleasant houses. They will throw the wood and stones into the sea like garbage. 13 So I will stop the sound of your happy songs. People will not hear your harps anymore. 14 I will make you a bare rock. You will be a place by the sea for spreading fishing nets! You will not be rebuilt, because I, the Lord , have spoken!” This is what the Lord God said.

Other Nations Will Cry for Tyre

15 This is what the Lord God says to Tyre: “The countries along the Mediterranean coast will shake at the sound of your fall. That will happen when your people are hurt and killed. 16 Then all the leaders of the countries by the sea will step down from their thrones and show their sadness. They will take off their special robes and their beautiful clothes. Then they will put on their ‘clothes of shaking.’ They will sit on the ground and shake with fear. They will be shocked at how quickly you were destroyed. 17 They will sing this sad song about you:

“‘Tyre, you were a famous city. [ d ]
People came from across the sea to live in you. [ e ]
You were famous,
but now you are gone!
You were strong on the sea,
and so were the people who lived in you.
You made all who live on the mainland
afraid of you.
18 Now, on the day you fall,
the countries along the coast will shake with fear.
You started many colonies along the coast.
Now those people will be afraid when you are gone!’”

19 This is what the Lord God says: “Tyre, you will become an old, empty city. No one will live there. I will cause the sea to flow over you. The great sea will cover you. 20 I will send you down into that deep hole—to the place of death. You will join those who died long ago. I will send you to the world below, like all the other old, empty cities. You will be with all the others who go down to the grave. No one will live in you then. You will never again be in the land of the living! 21 Other people will be afraid about what happened to you. You will be finished. People will look for you, but they will never find you again.” That is what the Lord God says.

  2. Ezekiel 26:2 Son of man This was usually just a way of saying “a person” or “a human being.” Here, it is a way of addressing Ezekiel.
  3. Ezekiel 26:11 hoofs The hard part of a horse’s foot.
  4. Ezekiel 26:17 you were a famous city This can also mean “People have cried for you.”
  5. Ezekiel 26:17 People … you This can also mean “People have lived in you for a long time.”

26 And it came to pass in the eleventh year, in the first day of the month, that the word of the Lord came unto me, saying,

2 Son of man, because that Tyrus hath said against Jerusalem, Aha, she is broken that was the gates of the people: she is turned unto me: I shall be replenished, now she is laid waste:

3 Therefore thus saith the Lord God ; Behold, I am against thee, O Tyrus, and will cause many nations to come up against thee, as the sea causeth his waves to come up.

4 And they shall destroy the walls of Tyrus, and break down her towers: I will also scrape her dust from her, and make her like the top of a rock.

5 It shall be a place for the spreading of nets in the midst of the sea: for I have spoken it, saith the Lord God : and it shall become a spoil to the nations.

6 And her daughters which are in the field shall be slain by the sword; and they shall know that I am the Lord .

7 For thus saith the Lord God ; Behold, I will bring upon Tyrus Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, a king of kings, from the north, with horses, and with chariots, and with horsemen, and companies, and much people.

8 He shall slay with the sword thy daughters in the field: and he shall make a fort against thee, and cast a mount against thee, and lift up the buckler against thee.

9 And he shall set engines of war against thy walls, and with his axes he shall break down thy towers.

10 By reason of the abundance of his horses their dust shall cover thee: thy walls shall shake at the noise of the horsemen, and of the wheels, and of the chariots, when he shall enter into thy gates, as men enter into a city wherein is made a breach.

11 With the hoofs of his horses shall he tread down all thy streets: he shall slay thy people by the sword, and thy strong garrisons shall go down to the ground.

12 And they shall make a spoil of thy riches, and make a prey of thy merchandise: and they shall break down thy walls, and destroy thy pleasant houses: and they shall lay thy stones and thy timber and thy dust in the midst of the water.

13 And I will cause the noise of thy songs to cease; and the sound of thy harps shall be no more heard.

14 And I will make thee like the top of a rock: thou shalt be a place to spread nets upon; thou shalt be built no more: for I the Lord have spoken it, saith the Lord God .

15 Thus saith the Lord God to Tyrus; Shall not the isles shake at the sound of thy fall, when the wounded cry, when the slaughter is made in the midst of thee?

16 Then all the princes of the sea shall come down from their thrones, and lay away their robes, and put off their broidered garments: they shall clothe themselves with trembling; they shall sit upon the ground, and shall tremble at every moment, and be astonished at thee.

17 And they shall take up a lamentation for thee, and say to thee, How art thou destroyed, that wast inhabited of seafaring men, the renowned city, which wast strong in the sea, she and her inhabitants, which cause their terror to be on all that haunt it!

18 Now shall the isles tremble in the day of thy fall; yea, the isles that are in the sea shall be troubled at thy departure.

19 For thus saith the Lord God ; When I shall make thee a desolate city, like the cities that are not inhabited; when I shall bring up the deep upon thee, and great waters shall cover thee;

20 When I shall bring thee down with them that descend into the pit, with the people of old time, and shall set thee in the low parts of the earth, in places desolate of old, with them that go down to the pit, that thou be not inhabited; and I shall set glory in the land of the living;

21 I will make thee a terror, and thou shalt be no more: though thou be sought for, yet shalt thou never be found again, saith the Lord God .

Judgment on Tyre

26 Now in the eleventh year, on the first of the month, the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 2 “Son of man, because ( A ) Tyre has said in regard to Jerusalem, ‘Aha! The ( B ) gateway of the peoples is broken; it has [ a ] ( C ) opened to me. I shall be filled, now that she is laid waste,’ 3 therefore this is what the Lord [ b ] God says: ‘Behold, I am against you, Tyre, and I will bring up ( D ) many nations against you, as the ( E ) sea brings up its waves. 4 They will ( F ) destroy the walls of Tyre and tear down her towers; and I will sweep her debris away from her and make her a bare rock. 5 She will become a dry place for the spreading of nets in the midst of the sea, for I have spoken,’ declares the Lord God ; ‘and she will become ( G ) plunder for the nations. 6 Also her ( H ) daughters who are [ c ] on the mainland will be killed by the sword, and they will know that I am the Lord .’”

7 For the Lord God says this: “Behold, I am going to bring upon Tyre from the north Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, ( I ) king of kings, with horses, ( J ) chariots, cavalry, and [ d ] a great army. 8 He will kill your daughters [ e ] on the mainland with the sword; and he will make ( K ) siege walls against you, pile up an ( L ) assault ramp against you, and raise up a large shield against you. 9 And he will direct the blow of his battering rams against your walls, and he will tear down your towers with his [ f ] axes. 10 Because of the multitude of his ( M ) horses, the dust raised by them will cover you; your walls will ( N ) shake from the noise of cavalry, [ g ] wagons, and chariots when he ( O ) enters your gates as warriors enter a city that is breached. 11 With the hoofs of his ( P ) horses he will trample all your streets. He will kill your people with the sword, and your strong [ h ] pillars will ( Q ) go down to the ground. 12 Also they will take your riches as spoils and plunder your ( R ) merchandise, ( S ) tear down your walls and destroy your ( T ) delightful houses, and [ i ] throw your stones, your timbers, and your debris ( U ) into the water. 13 So I will put an end to the sound of your ( V ) songs, and the sound of your ( W ) harps will no longer be heard. 14 I will turn you into a bare rock; you will become a dry place for the spreading of nets. You will not be ( X ) rebuilt, for I the ( Y ) Lord have spoken,” declares the Lord God .

15 The Lord God says this to Tyre: “Will the ( Z ) coastlands not ( AA ) shake from the sound of your downfall when the wounded groan, when the slaughter takes place in your midst? 16 Then all the princes of the sea will ( AB ) descend from their thrones, remove their robes, and strip off their colorfully woven garments. They will ( AC ) clothe themselves with [ j ] trembling; they will sit on the ground, ( AD ) tremble again and again, and be appalled at you. 17 And they will take up a ( AE ) song of mourning over you and say to you,

( AF ) How you have perished, you inhabited one,
From the seas, you famous city,
Which was ( AG ) mighty on the sea,
She and her inhabitants,
Who imposed [ k ] her terror
On all her inhabitants!
18 Now the ( AH ) coastlands will tremble
On the day of your downfall;
Yes, the coastlands which are by the sea
Will be horrified at your ( AI ) passing.’”

19 For this is what the Lord God says: “When I make you a desolate city, like the cities which are not inhabited, when I ( AJ ) bring up the deep over you and the great waters cover you, 20 then I will bring you down with those who ( AK ) go down to the pit, to the people of old, and I will make you remain in the ( AL ) lower parts of the earth, like the ancient ruins, with those who go down to the pit, so that you will not [ l ] be inhabited; but I will put ( AM ) glory in the land of the living. 21 I will [ m ] cause you ( AN ) sudden terrors and you will no longer exist; though you will be sought, ( AO ) you will never be found again,” declares the Lord God .

A Prophecy Against Tyre

26 In the eleventh month of the twelfth [ a ] year, on the first day of the month, the word of the Lord came to me: ( A ) 2 “Son of man, because Tyre ( B ) has said of Jerusalem, ‘Aha! ( C ) The gate to the nations is broken, and its doors have swung open to me; now that she lies in ruins I will prosper,’ 3 therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says: I am against you, Tyre, and I will bring many nations against you, like the sea ( D ) casting up its waves. 4 They will destroy ( E ) the walls of Tyre ( F ) and pull down her towers; I will scrape away her rubble and make her a bare rock. 5 Out in the sea ( G ) she will become a place to spread fishnets, ( H ) for I have spoken, declares the Sovereign Lord . She will become plunder ( I ) for the nations, ( J ) 6 and her settlements on the mainland will be ravaged by the sword. Then they will know that I am the Lord .

7 “For this is what the Sovereign Lord says: From the north I am going to bring against Tyre Nebuchadnezzar [ b ] ( K ) king of Babylon, king of kings, ( L ) with horses and chariots, ( M ) with horsemen and a great army. 8 He will ravage your settlements on the mainland with the sword; he will set up siege works ( N ) against you, build a ramp ( O ) up to your walls and raise his shields against you. 9 He will direct the blows of his battering rams against your walls and demolish your towers with his weapons. ( P ) 10 His horses will be so many that they will cover you with dust. Your walls will tremble at the noise of the warhorses, wagons and chariots ( Q ) when he enters your gates as men enter a city whose walls have been broken through. 11 The hooves ( R ) of his horses will trample all your streets; he will kill your people with the sword, and your strong pillars ( S ) will fall to the ground. ( T ) 12 They will plunder your wealth and loot your merchandise; they will break down your walls and demolish your fine houses and throw your stones, timber and rubble into the sea. ( U ) 13 I will put an end ( V ) to your noisy songs, ( W ) and the music of your harps ( X ) will be heard no more. ( Y ) 14 I will make you a bare rock, and you will become a place to spread fishnets. You will never be rebuilt, ( Z ) for I the Lord have spoken, declares the Sovereign Lord .

15 “This is what the Sovereign Lord says to Tyre: Will not the coastlands ( AA ) tremble ( AB ) at the sound of your fall, when the wounded groan ( AC ) and the slaughter takes place in you? 16 Then all the princes of the coast will step down from their thrones and lay aside their robes and take off their embroidered ( AD ) garments. Clothed ( AE ) with terror, they will sit on the ground, ( AF ) trembling ( AG ) every moment, appalled ( AH ) at you. 17 Then they will take up a lament ( AI ) concerning you and say to you:

“‘How you are destroyed, city of renown,
peopled by men of the sea!
You were a power on the seas,
you and your citizens;
you put your terror
on all who lived there. ( AJ )
18 Now the coastlands tremble ( AK )
on the day of your fall;
the islands in the sea
are terrified at your collapse.’ ( AL )

19 “This is what the Sovereign Lord says: When I make you a desolate city, like cities no longer inhabited, and when I bring the ocean depths ( AM ) over you and its vast waters cover you, ( AN ) 20 then I will bring you down with those who go down to the pit, ( AO ) to the people of long ago. I will make you dwell in the earth below, as in ancient ruins, with those who go down to the pit, and you will not return or take your place [ c ] in the land of the living. ( AP ) 21 I will bring you to a horrible end and you will be no more. ( AQ ) You will be sought, but you will never again be found, declares the Sovereign Lord .” ( AR )
