2: Frogs

8 The Lord said to Moses, ‘Go to Pharaoh and say to him, “This is the message from the Lord : Let my people go so that they may worship me. ² If you refuse to let them go, I will send thousands of frogs to bring trouble to your whole country. ³ The Nile river will be full of frogs. The frogs will go into your house. They will jump into your bed. They will go into the houses of your servants. They will go into the houses of your people. They will jump into your ovens and into your dishes. ⁴ The frogs will jump all over you. They will jump on your people and on all your servants.” ’

⁵ Then the Lord said to Moses, ‘Say to Aaron, “Take your stick in your hand. Then raise your hand over the rivers, the streams and the pools. You will cause frogs to come up over the whole of Egypt.” ’

⁶ So Aaron lifted up his hand over the water of Egypt. Then the frogs came up and they covered the whole of Egypt.

⁷ But the magicians used their magic to do the same thing. They also made frogs come up on the land of Egypt.

⁸ Then Pharaoh called Moses and Aaron to come to him. He said, ‘Pray to the Lord . Ask him to remove the frogs from me and from my people. Then I will let your people go. They can offer sacrifices to the Lord .’

⁹ Moses said to Pharaoh, ‘I will let you choose the time when I should pray to God. Then I will ask God to do this for you, for your servants and for your people. I will ask God to remove the frogs from you and from all your houses. The frogs will remain only in the Nile river.’

¹⁰ Pharaoh said, ‘Do it tomorrow.’ Moses answered, ‘I will do what you have asked. Then you will know that there is nobody like the Lord our God. ¹¹ The frogs will go away from you and your houses. They will go away from your servants and your people. They will remain only in the river.’

¹² So Moses and Aaron left Pharaoh. Then Moses prayed to the Lord about the frogs that he had brought to punish Pharaoh. ¹³ And the Lord did what Moses asked. The frogs in the houses, in the yards and in the fields all died. ¹⁴ The people swept the frogs together to make big heaps. There was a very bad smell over the whole country. ¹⁵ But when Pharaoh saw that the trouble had gone, his mind became hard again. He refused to listen to Moses and Aaron. The Lord had said that this would happen, and it did!

3: Gnats

¹⁶ Then the Lord said to Moses, ‘Say to Aaron, “Lift up your stick and hit the dirt on the ground. It will become gnats in the whole land of Egypt.” ’

¹⁷ Moses and Aaron obeyed God. Aaron lifted up his hand and he hit the dirt with his stick. The dirt became gnats that flew onto all the people and onto all the animals. The dirt on the ground became gnats all over Egypt. ¹⁸ Then the Egyptian magicians tried to use their magic to make gnats appear. But they could not do it. The gnats were on all the people and on all the animals.

¹⁹ Then the magicians said to Pharaoh, ‘This is the work of God.’ But there was no change in Pharaoh's thoughts. He would not listen to them. The Lord had said that this would happen, and it did!

4: Flies

²⁰ Then the Lord said to Moses, ‘Get up early in the morning. Meet Pharaoh when he goes out to the river. Then say to him, “The Lord says: You must let my people go. Let them go to worship me. ²¹ If you do not let my people go, I will send thousands of flies on you. I will send them on your servants and on your people. I will send them into your houses. The houses of the Egyptians will be full of flies. The flies will cover all the ground where people live.

²² But it will be different in the region of Goshen, where my people live. I will not send flies there. Then you will know that I, the Lord , am doing my work here in this land. ²³ I will make a difference between my people and your people. This miracle will happen tomorrow.” ’

²⁴ That is what the Lord did. Great numbers of flies came into Pharaoh's house and into his servants' houses. The flies went all over Egypt and they destroyed the whole land.

²⁵ Then Pharaoh called Moses and Aaron to come to him. He said to them, ‘Go! You can offer sacrifices to your God here, in Egypt.’ ²⁶ But Moses said, ‘It would not be right to do that. The Egyptians do not like our sacrifices of animals. If we offer these sacrifices to the Lord our God, the Egyptians will be angry with us. They will throw stones at us to kill us. ²⁷ So we must go on a journey for three days into the desert. We will offer sacrifices to the Lord our God there, as he has told us to do.’

²⁸ So Pharaoh said, ‘I will let you go. You may go into the desert and offer sacrifices to the Lord your God there. But do not go very far away. And pray for me too.’

²⁹ Then Moses said, ‘I will leave you now, and I will pray to the Lord . Tomorrow, all the flies will go away from you, your officers and your people. But be careful! Do not deceive us, as you did before. You must really let the people go away to offer sacrifices to the Lord .’

³⁰ So Moses left Pharaoh and he prayed to the Lord . ³¹ The Lord did what Moses asked him. All the flies left Pharaoh, his officers and his people. Not one fly remained! ³² But again, Pharaoh's mind became hard. He refused to let the people go.

8 Then the Lord told Moses, “Go to Pharaoh and tell him that the Lord says, ‘Let my people go to worship me! ² If you refuse to let my people go, then I will fill Egypt with frogs. ³ The Nile River will be filled with frogs. They will come from the river and enter your houses. They will be in your bedrooms and in your beds. They will be in the houses of your officials and in your ovens and in your jars of water. ⁴ The frogs will be all over you, your people, and your officials.’”

⁵ Then the Lord said to Moses, “Tell Aaron to hold the walking stick in his hand over the canals, rivers, and lakes. Then the frogs will come out onto the land of Egypt.”

⁶ So Aaron raised his hand over the waters of Egypt, and the frogs began coming out of the water and covered the land of Egypt.

⁷ The magicians used their magic to do the same thing—so even more frogs came out onto the land in Egypt!

⁸ Pharaoh called for Moses and Aaron and said, “Ask the Lord to remove the frogs from me and my people. I will let the people go to offer sacrifices to the Lord .”

⁹ Moses said to Pharaoh, “I will pray for you, your people, and your officials. Then the frogs will leave you and your houses. They will remain only in the river. When do you want the frogs to go away?”

¹⁰ Pharaoh said, “Tomorrow.”

Moses said, “It will happen as you say. In this way you will know that there is no god like the Lord our God. ¹¹ The frogs will leave you, your house, your officials, and your people. They will remain only in the river.”

¹² Moses and Aaron left Pharaoh. Moses prayed to the Lord about the frogs he had sent against Pharaoh. ¹³ And the Lord did what Moses asked. The frogs died in the houses, in the yards, and in the fields. ¹⁴ They began to rot, and the whole country began to stink. ¹⁵ But when Pharaoh saw that they were free of the frogs, he again became stubborn. Pharaoh did not do what Moses and Aaron had asked him to do. This happened just as the Lord had said.

The Lice

¹⁶ Then the Lord said to Moses, “Tell Aaron to raise his stick and hit the dust on the ground, and everywhere in Egypt dust will become lice.”

¹⁷ They did this. Aaron raised the stick in his hand and hit the dust on the ground, and everywhere in Egypt the dust became lice. The lice got on the animals and the people.

¹⁸ The magicians used their magic and tried to do the same thing. But the magicians could not make lice come from the dust. The lice remained on the animals and the people. ¹⁹ So the magicians told Pharaoh that the power of God did this. But Pharaoh refused to listen to them. This happened just as the Lord had said.

The Flies

²⁰ The Lord said to Moses, “Get up in the morning and go to Pharaoh. He will go out to the river. Tell him that the Lord says, ‘Let my people go and worship me! ²¹ If you don’t let my people go, then flies will come into your houses. The flies will be on you and your officials. The houses of Egypt will be full of flies. They will be all over the ground too! ²² But I will not treat the Israelites the same as the Egyptians. There will not be any flies in Goshen, where my people live. In this way you will know that I, the Lord , am in this land. ²³ So tomorrow I will treat my people differently from your people. This will be my proof.’”

²⁴ So the Lord did just what he said. Millions of flies came into Egypt. The flies were in Pharaoh’s house, and they were in all his officials’ houses. They were all over Egypt. The flies were ruining the country. ²⁵ So Pharaoh called for Moses and Aaron and told them, “Offer sacrifices to your God here in this country.”

²⁶ But Moses said, “It would not be right to do that. The Egyptians think it is terrible to kill animals as sacrifices for the Lord our God. If we do this here, the Egyptians will see us and throw stones at us and kill us. ²⁷ Let us go three days into the desert and offer sacrifices to the Lord our God. This is what he told us to do.”

²⁸ So Pharaoh said, “I will let you go and offer sacrifices to the Lord your God in the desert, but you must not go very far. Now, go and pray for me.”

²⁹ Moses said, “Look, I will leave and ask the Lord to remove the flies from you, your people, and your officials tomorrow. But you must not stop the people from offering sacrifices to the Lord .”

³⁰ So Moses left Pharaoh and prayed to the Lord . ³¹ And the Lord did what Moses asked. He removed the flies from Pharaoh, his officials, and his people. None of the flies remained. ³² But Pharaoh again became stubborn and did not let the people go.

8 And the Lord spake unto Moses, Go unto Pharaoh, and say unto him, Thus saith the Lord , Let my people go, that they may serve me.

² And if thou refuse to let them go, behold, I will smite all thy borders with frogs:

³ And the river shall bring forth frogs abundantly, which shall go up and come into thine house, and into thy bedchamber, and upon thy bed, and into the house of thy servants, and upon thy people, and into thine ovens, and into thy kneadingtroughs:

⁴ And the frogs shall come up both on thee, and upon thy people, and upon all thy servants.

⁵ And the Lord spake unto Moses, Say unto Aaron, Stretch forth thine hand with thy rod over the streams, over the rivers, and over the ponds, and cause frogs to come up upon the land of Egypt.

⁶ And Aaron stretched out his hand over the waters of Egypt; and the frogs came up, and covered the land of Egypt.

⁷ And the magicians did so with their enchantments, and brought up frogs upon the land of Egypt.

⁸ Then Pharaoh called for Moses and Aaron, and said, Intreat the Lord , that he may take away the frogs from me, and from my people; and I will let the people go, that they may do sacrifice unto the Lord .

⁹ And Moses said unto Pharaoh, Glory over me: when shall I intreat for thee, and for thy servants, and for thy people, to destroy the frogs from thee and thy houses, that they may remain in the river only?

¹⁰ And he said, To morrow. And he said, Be it according to thy word: that thou mayest know that there is none like unto the Lord our God.

¹¹ And the frogs shall depart from thee, and from thy houses, and from thy servants, and from thy people; they shall remain in the river only.

¹² And Moses and Aaron went out from Pharaoh: and Moses cried unto the Lord because of the frogs which he had brought against Pharaoh.

¹³ And the Lord did according to the word of Moses; and the frogs died out of the houses, out of the villages, and out of the fields.

¹⁴ And they gathered them together upon heaps: and the land stank.

¹⁵ But when Pharaoh saw that there was respite, he hardened his heart, and hearkened not unto them; as the Lord had said.

¹⁶ And the Lord said unto Moses, Say unto Aaron, Stretch out thy rod, and smite the dust of the land, that it may become lice throughout all the land of Egypt.

¹⁷ And they did so; for Aaron stretched out his hand with his rod, and smote the dust of the earth, and it became lice in man, and in beast; all the dust of the land became lice throughout all the land of Egypt.

¹⁸ And the magicians did so with their enchantments to bring forth lice, but they could not: so there were lice upon man, and upon beast.

¹⁹ Then the magicians said unto Pharaoh, This is the finger of God: and Pharaoh's heart was hardened, and he hearkened not unto them; as the Lord had said.

²⁰ And the Lord said unto Moses, Rise up early in the morning, and stand before Pharaoh; lo, he cometh forth to the water; and say unto him, Thus saith the Lord , Let my people go, that they may serve me.

²¹ Else, if thou wilt not let my people go, behold, I will send swarms of flies upon thee, and upon thy servants, and upon thy people, and into thy houses: and the houses of the Egyptians shall be full of swarms of flies, and also the ground whereon they are.

²² And I will sever in that day the land of Goshen, in which my people dwell, that no swarms of flies shall be there; to the end thou mayest know that I am the Lord in the midst of the earth.

²³ And I will put a division between my people and thy people: to morrow shall this sign be.

²⁴ And the Lord did so; and there came a grievous swarm of flies into the house of Pharaoh, and into his servants' houses, and into all the land of Egypt: the land was corrupted by reason of the swarm of flies.

²⁵ And Pharaoh called for Moses and for Aaron, and said, Go ye, sacrifice to your God in the land.

²⁶ And Moses said, It is not meet so to do; for we shall sacrifice the abomination of the Egyptians to the Lord our God: lo, shall we sacrifice the abomination of the Egyptians before their eyes, and will they not stone us?

²⁷ We will go three days' journey into the wilderness, and sacrifice to the Lord our God, as he shall command us.

²⁸ And Pharaoh said, I will let you go, that ye may sacrifice to the Lord your God in the wilderness; only ye shall not go very far away: intreat for me.

²⁹ And Moses said, Behold, I go out from thee, and I will intreat the Lord that the swarms of flies may depart from Pharaoh, from his servants, and from his people, to morrow: but let not Pharaoh deal deceitfully any more in not letting the people go to sacrifice to the Lord .

³⁰ And Moses went out from Pharaoh, and intreated the Lord .

³¹ And the Lord did according to the word of Moses; and he removed the swarms of flies from Pharaoh, from his servants, and from his people; there remained not one.

³² And Pharaoh hardened his heart at this time also, neither would he let the people go.

Frogs over the Land

8 ^{[ a ]} Then the Lord said to Moses, “Go to Pharaoh and say to him, ‘This is what the Lord says: “ ^{( A )} Let My people go, so that they may serve Me. ² But if you refuse to let them go, behold, I am going to strike your entire territory with frogs. ³ The Nile will ^{( B )} swarm with frogs, which will come up and go into your house, and into your bedroom and on your bed, and into the houses of your servants, and on your people, and into your ovens and kneading bowls. ⁴ So the frogs will come up on you, your people, and on all your servants.”’” ⁵ ^{[ b ]} Then the Lord said to Moses, “Say to Aaron, ‘ ^{( C )} Extend your hand with your staff over the rivers, over the ^{[ c ]} streams, and over the pools, and make frogs come up on the land of Egypt.’” ⁶ So Aaron extended his hand over the waters of Egypt, and the ^{[ d ]} ^{( D )} frogs came up and covered the land of Egypt. ⁷ However, ^{( E )} the soothsayer priests did the same with their secret arts, ^{[ e ]} making frogs come up on the land of Egypt.

⁸ Then Pharaoh ^{( F )} called for Moses and Aaron and said, “ ^{( G )} Plead with the Lord ^{[ f ]} to remove the frogs from me and from my people; and ^{( H )} I will let the people go, so that they may sacrifice to the Lord .” ⁹ And Moses said to Pharaoh, “ ^{[ g ]} The honor is yours to tell me: when shall I plead for you and your servants and your people, ^{[ h ]} that the frogs be destroyed from you and your houses, that they be left only in the Nile?”

¹⁰ Then he said, “Tomorrow.” So he said, “ May it be according to your word, so that you may know that there is ^{( I )} no one like the Lord our God. ¹¹ The ^{( J )} frogs will depart from you and your houses, and from your servants and your people; they will be left only in the Nile.” ¹² Then Moses and Aaron went out from Pharaoh, and ^{( K )} Moses cried out to the Lord concerning the frogs which He had ^{[ i ]} inflicted upon Pharaoh. ¹³ The Lord did according to the word of Moses, and the frogs died out of the houses, the courtyards, and the fields. ¹⁴ So they piled them in heaps, and the land stank. ¹⁵ But when Pharaoh saw that there was relief, he ^{[ j ]} hardened his heart and ^{( L )} did not listen to them, just as the Lord had said.

The Plague of Insects

¹⁶ Then the Lord said to Moses, “Say to Aaron, ‘Extend your staff and strike the dust of the earth, so that it may turn into ^{[ k ]} gnats through all the land of Egypt.’” ¹⁷ They did so; and Aaron extended his hand with his staff and struck the dust of the earth, and there were ^{[ l ]} gnats on every ^{[ m ]} person and animal. All the dust of the earth turned into ^{[ n ]} ^{( M )} gnats through all the land of Egypt. ¹⁸ The soothsayer priests tried with their secret arts to produce ^{[ o ]} gnats, but ^{( N )} they could not; so there were ^{[ p ]} gnats on every person and animal. ¹⁹ Then the soothsayer priests said to Pharaoh, “ ^{( O )} This is the finger of God.” But Pharaoh’s heart was ^{[ q ]} hardened, and he did not listen to them, just as the Lord had said.

²⁰ Then the Lord said to Moses, “ ^{( P )} Rise early in the morning and present yourself before Pharaoh, ^{[ r ]} as ^{( Q )} he comes out to the water; and say to him, ‘This is what the Lord says: “ ^{( R )} Let My people go, so that they may serve Me. ²¹ For if you are not going to let My people go, behold, I will send swarms of flies on you and on your servants and on your people, and into your houses; and the houses of the Egyptians will be full of swarms of flies, and also the ground on which they live . ²² ^{( S )} But on that day I will set apart the land of Goshen, where My people are ^{[ s ]} living, so that no swarms of flies will be there, in order that you may know that ^{[ t ]} ^{( T )} I, the Lord , am in the midst of the land. ²³ I will ^{[ u ]} put a division between My people and your people. Tomorrow this sign will occur.”’” ²⁴ Then the Lord did so. And ^{[ v ]} thick swarms of flies entered the house of Pharaoh and the houses of his servants, and the land was ^{( U )} laid waste because of the swarms of flies in all the land of Egypt.

²⁵ Then Pharaoh ^{( V )} called for Moses and Aaron and said, “ ^{( W )} Go, sacrifice to your God within the land.” ²⁶ But Moses said, “It is not permissible for us to do so, because we will sacrifice to the Lord our God ^{[ w ]} that which is ^{( X )} an abomination to the Egyptians. If we sacrifice ^{[ x ]} that which is an abomination to the Egyptians before their eyes, will they not stone us? ²⁷ We must go a ^{( Y )} three days’ journey into the wilderness and sacrifice to the Lord our God, just as He ^{[ y ]} commands us.” ²⁸ Pharaoh said, “ ^{( Z )} I will let you go, so that you may sacrifice to the Lord your God in the wilderness; only you shall not go very far away. ^{( AA )} Plead for me.” ²⁹ Then Moses said, “Behold, I am going to leave you, and I will plead with the Lord that the swarms of flies may depart from Pharaoh, from his servants, and from his people tomorrow; only do not let Pharaoh ^{( AB )} deal deceitfully again in not letting the people go to sacrifice to the Lord .”

³⁰ So ^{( AC )} Moses left Pharaoh and pleaded with the Lord . ³¹ The Lord did ^{[ z ]} as Moses asked, and removed the swarms of flies from Pharaoh, from his servants, and from his people; not one remained. ³² But Pharaoh ^{[ aa ]} hardened his heart this time also, and ^{( AD )} he did not let the people go.

8 ¹ ^{[ a ]} Then the Lord said to Moses, “Go to Pharaoh and say to him, ‘This is what the Lord says: Let my people go, so that they may worship ^{( A )} me. ² If you refuse to let them go, I will send a plague of frogs ^{( B )} on your whole country. ³ The Nile will teem with frogs. They will come up into your palace and your bedroom and onto your bed, into the houses of your officials and on your people, ^{( C )} and into your ovens and kneading troughs. ^{( D )} ⁴ The frogs will come up on you and your people and all your officials.’”

⁵ Then the Lord said to Moses, “Tell Aaron, ‘Stretch out your hand with your staff ^{( E )} over the streams and canals and ponds, and make frogs ^{( F )} come up on the land of Egypt.’”

⁶ So Aaron stretched out his hand over the waters of Egypt, and the frogs ^{( G )} came up and covered the land. ⁷ But the magicians did the same things by their secret arts; ^{( H )} they also made frogs come up on the land of Egypt.

⁸ Pharaoh summoned Moses and Aaron and said, “Pray ^{( I )} to the Lord to take the frogs away from me and my people, and I will let your people go to offer sacrifices ^{( J )} to the Lord .”

⁹ Moses said to Pharaoh, “I leave to you the honor of setting the time ^{( K )} for me to pray for you and your officials and your people that you and your houses may be rid of the frogs, except for those that remain in the Nile.”

¹⁰ “Tomorrow,” Pharaoh said.

Moses replied, “It will be as you say, so that you may know there is no one like the Lord our God. ^{( L )} ¹¹ The frogs will leave you and your houses, your officials and your people; they will remain only in the Nile.”

¹² After Moses and Aaron left Pharaoh, Moses cried out to the Lord about the frogs he had brought on Pharaoh. ¹³ And the Lord did what Moses asked. ^{( M )} The frogs died in the houses, in the courtyards and in the fields. ¹⁴ They were piled into heaps, and the land reeked of them. ¹⁵ But when Pharaoh saw that there was relief, ^{( N )} he hardened his heart ^{( O )} and would not listen to Moses and Aaron, just as the Lord had said.

The Plague of Gnats

¹⁶ Then the Lord said to Moses, “Tell Aaron, ‘Stretch out your staff ^{( P )} and strike the dust of the ground,’ and throughout the land of Egypt the dust will become gnats.” ¹⁷ They did this, and when Aaron stretched out his hand with the staff and struck the dust of the ground, gnats ^{( Q )} came on people and animals. All the dust throughout the land of Egypt became gnats. ¹⁸ But when the magicians ^{( R )} tried to produce gnats by their secret arts, ^{( S )} they could not.

Since the gnats were on people and animals everywhere, ¹⁹ the magicians said to Pharaoh, “This is the finger ^{( T )} of God.” But Pharaoh’s heart ^{( U )} was hard and he would not listen, ^{( V )} just as the Lord had said.

The Plague of Flies

²⁰ Then the Lord said to Moses, “Get up early in the morning ^{( W )} and confront Pharaoh as he goes to the river and say to him, ‘This is what the Lord says: Let my people go, so that they may worship ^{( X )} me. ²¹ If you do not let my people go, I will send swarms of flies on you and your officials, on your people and into your houses. The houses of the Egyptians will be full of flies; even the ground will be covered with them.

²² “‘But on that day I will deal differently with the land of Goshen, ^{( Y )} where my people live; ^{( Z )} no swarms of flies will be there, so that you will know ^{( AA )} that I, the Lord , am in this land. ²³ I will make a distinction ^{[ b ]} between my people and your people. ^{( AB )} This sign will occur tomorrow.’”

²⁴ And the Lord did this. Dense swarms of flies poured into Pharaoh’s palace and into the houses of his officials; throughout Egypt the land was ruined by the flies. ^{( AC )}

²⁵ Then Pharaoh summoned ^{( AD )} Moses and Aaron and said, “Go, sacrifice to your God here in the land.”

²⁶ But Moses said, “That would not be right. The sacrifices we offer the Lord our God would be detestable to the Egyptians. ^{( AE )} And if we offer sacrifices that are detestable in their eyes, will they not stone us? ²⁷ We must take a three-day journey ^{( AF )} into the wilderness to offer sacrifices ^{( AG )} to the Lord our God, as he commands us.”

²⁸ Pharaoh said, “I will let you go to offer sacrifices to the Lord your God in the wilderness, but you must not go very far. Now pray ^{( AH )} for me.”

²⁹ Moses answered, “As soon as I leave you, I will pray to the Lord , and tomorrow the flies will leave Pharaoh and his officials and his people. Only let Pharaoh be sure that he does not act deceitfully ^{( AI )} again by not letting the people go to offer sacrifices to the Lord .”

³⁰ Then Moses left Pharaoh and prayed to the Lord , ^{( AJ )} ³¹ and the Lord did what Moses asked. The flies left Pharaoh and his officials and his people; not a fly remained. ³² But this time also Pharaoh hardened his heart ^{( AK )} and would not let the people go.
