- Exodus Chapter 38
38 Bezalel used acacia wood to build the altar for burnt offerings. [ a ] It was square, 2.2 metres long and 2.2 metres wide. It was 1.3 metres high. 2 He made four horns, one at each corner of the altar. The horns and the altar itself were one piece of work. He covered the whole altar with bronze. 3 He made all the tools for the altar with bronze. He made pots to remove the ashes, and also spades and bowls. He made forks for the meat and dishes to carry the fire.
4 He used bronze to make a square net for the altar. He fixed it inside the altar, in the middle between the top and the ground. 5 He used bronze to make four rings. He fixed them to the four corners of the net. The poles would go through these rings. 6 He used acacia wood to make the poles. He covered them with bronze. 7 He put the poles through the rings on each side of the altar, to carry it. He used boards to make the altar so that it was empty inside.
8 He used bronze to make a large bowl for water, and a base for it to stand on. He used the bronze from small mirrors to make these things. The mirrors had belonged to women who worked at the entrance of the Tent of Meeting.
9 Bezalel made the yard around the tent. The south side of the yard was 45 metres long. It had curtains that were made from good linen. 10 He made 20 poles and 20 bronze bases to hold the poles. He used silver to make hooks and sticks to hold the curtains. 11 The north side of the yard was also 45 metres long. It also had 20 poles and their bronze bases, as well as their silver hooks and sticks.
12 The west end of the yard was 23 metres long. It had curtains with ten poles and their ten bronze bases. The poles had silver hooks and sticks. 13 The entrance of the yard was at its east end. That end was also 23 metres long. 14-15 There were 7 metres of curtain on each side of the entrance. Three poles with their bases held the curtains on each side. 16 The workers used good linen to make all the curtains around the yard.
17 All the poles had bronze bases to hold them. But the workers used silver to make the hooks that were on the poles, and the sticks. They covered the tops of the poles with silver too. All the poles around the yard had silver sticks to join them together.
18 They used blue, purple and red material, as well as good linen, to make the curtain for the entrance of the yard. A worker used special skills so that it looked beautiful. It was 9 metres wide and 2.2 metres high. All the curtains around the yard were 2.2 metres high. 19 Four poles in bronze bases held the curtain at the entrance. The poles had silver hooks and silver sticks. Silver also covered the tops of the poles. 20 The workers used bronze to make the pegs that fixed the tabernacle to the ground. They also made bronze pegs to fix all the curtains around the yard to the ground.
21 This is a list of the materials that the workers used to make the tabernacle with the Covenant Box inside it. Moses commanded the Levites to write this list. Ithamar, the son of Aaron the priest, was the leader of this work.
22 Bezalel, the son of Uri and grandson of Hur, made all the things that the Lord had commanded Moses. Bezalel belonged to the tribe of Judah. 23 Ahisamach's son Oholiab helped him. He belonged to the tribe of Dan. He had a special skill to draw things that he wanted to make. He could make beautiful pictures on cloth, with blue, purple and red materials, as well as good linen.
24 The workers used 1,000 kilograms of gold to do all the work to make the tabernacle. That was its proper weight. The Israelites had lifted up this gold as an offering to the Lord .
25 The people had also brought 3,430 kilograms of silver as an offering for the work. 26 Each person who was 20 years old when Moses counted them had given the right amount, about ten grams. There were 603,550 men that Moses had counted.
27 The workers used 34 kilograms of silver to make each base to hold the poles. There were 100 bases to hold the tabernacle and the special curtain inside it. So they used 3,400 kilograms of silver to make the bases. 28 Then they used the 30 kilograms that still remained. With this, they made the hooks and the sticks for the poles, and they covered the tops of the poles.
29 The people had also lifted up 2,425 kilograms of bronze as an offering to the Lord . 30 The workers used this bronze to make the bases for the entrance to the tabernacle. They also used it to make the bronze altar, with its net and all its tools. 31 They used this bronze to make the bases for the curtains around the yard and for the entrance to the yard. They used it to make the pegs to fix the tabernacle and the curtain around the yard to the ground.
38 Then Bezalel used acacia wood to build the altar. This was the altar used for burning offerings. The altar was square. It was 5 cubits [ a ] long, 5 cubits wide, and 3 cubits [ b ] high. 2 He made a horn for each of the four corners of the altar. He joined each horn to its corner so that everything was one piece. He covered the altar with bronze. 3 Then he used bronze to make all the tools to be used on the altar. He made the pots, shovels, bowls, forks, and pans. 4 Then he made a bronze grating for the altar. This grating was shaped like a net. The grating was put under the ledge at the bottom of the altar. It went halfway up into the altar from below. 5 Then he made bronze rings to hold the poles for carrying the altar. He put the rings at the four corners of the grating. 6 Then he used acacia wood to make the poles and covered them with bronze. 7 He put the poles through the rings on the sides of the altar to carry it. He used boards to make the sides of the altar. It was hollow, like an empty box.
8 He made the bowl and its base with bronze. He used the bronze mirrors that the women gave. These were the women who served at the entrance to the Meeting Tent.
9 Then he made a wall of curtains around the courtyard. On the south side, he made a wall of curtains 100 cubits [ c ] long. The curtains were made from fine linen. 10 The curtains on the south side were supported by 20 posts. The posts were on 20 bronze bases. The hooks for the posts and the curtain rods [ d ] were made from silver. 11 The north side of the courtyard also had a wall of curtains 100 cubits long. There were 20 posts with 20 bronze bases. The hooks for the posts and the curtain rods were made from silver.
12 On the west side of the courtyard the wall of curtains was 50 cubits [ e ] long. There were 10 posts and 10 bases. The hooks for the posts and the curtain rods were made from silver.
13 The east side of the courtyard was 50 cubits wide. The entrance to the courtyard was on this side. 14 On one side of the entrance the wall of curtains was 15 cubits [ f ] long. There were three posts and three bases on this side. 15 The wall of curtains on the other side of the entrance was also 15 cubits long. There were three posts and three bases on that side. 16 All the curtains around the courtyard were made from fine linen. 17 The bases for the posts were made from bronze. The hooks and the curtain rods were made from silver. The tops of the posts were covered with silver also. All the posts in the courtyard had silver curtain rods.
18 The curtain for the entrance of the courtyard was made from fine linen and blue, purple, and red yarn. Designs were woven into that curtain. The curtain was 20 cubits [ g ] long and 5 cubits high. It was the same height as the curtains around the courtyard. 19 The curtain was supported by four posts and four bronze bases. The hooks on the posts were made from silver. The tops on the posts were covered with silver, and the curtain rods were also made from silver. 20 All the tent pegs for the Holy Tent and for the curtains around the courtyard were made from bronze.
21 Moses commanded the Levites to write down everything that was used to make the Holy Tent, that is, the Tent of the Agreement. Ithamar son of Aaron was in charge of keeping the list.
22 Bezalel son of Uri, the son of Hur, from the tribe of Judah, made everything the Lord commanded Moses. 23 Also Oholiab son of Ahisamach, from the tribe of Dan, helped him. Oholiab was a skilled worker and designer. He was skilled at weaving fine linen and blue, purple, and red yarn.
24 The people gave over a ton [ h ] of gold as an offering to the Lord for his holy place. (This was weighed using the official measure.)
25-26 All the men 20 years old or older were counted. Each man had to pay a tax of 1 beka [ i ] of silver. (Using the official measure, 1 beka is 1/2 shekel. [ j ] ) There were 603,550 men. So they collected about 7550 pounds of silver. 27 They used most of the silver to make 100 bases for the Holy Tent and its curtains, 75 pounds [ k ] for each base. 28 They used the remaining 44 pounds [ l ] of silver to make the hooks, the curtain rods, and the silver covers for the posts.
29 They gave more than 2 1/2 tons [ m ] of bronze. 30 That bronze was used to make the bases at the entrance of the Meeting Tent. They also used the bronze to make the altar and the bronze grating. And the bronze was used to make all the tools and dishes for the altar. 31 It was also used to make the bases for the curtains around the courtyard and the bases for the curtains at the entrance. And the bronze was used to make the tent pegs for the Holy Tent and for the curtains around the courtyard.
38 And he made the altar of burnt offering of shittim wood: five cubits was the length thereof, and five cubits the breadth thereof; it was foursquare; and three cubits the height thereof.
2 And he made the horns thereof on the four corners of it; the horns thereof were of the same: and he overlaid it with brass.
3 And he made all the vessels of the altar, the pots, and the shovels, and the basons, and the fleshhooks, and the firepans: all the vessels thereof made he of brass.
4 And he made for the altar a brasen grate of network under the compass thereof beneath unto the midst of it.
5 And he cast four rings for the four ends of the grate of brass, to be places for the staves.
6 And he made the staves of shittim wood, and overlaid them with brass.
7 And he put the staves into the rings on the sides of the altar, to bear it withal; he made the altar hollow with boards.
8 And he made the laver of brass, and the foot of it of brass, of the lookingglasses of the women assembling, which assembled at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.
9 And he made the court: on the south side southward the hangings of the court were of fine twined linen, an hundred cubits:
10 Their pillars were twenty, and their brasen sockets twenty; the hooks of the pillars and their fillets were of silver.
11 And for the north side the hangings were an hundred cubits, their pillars were twenty, and their sockets of brass twenty; the hooks of the pillars and their fillets of silver.
12 And for the west side were hangings of fifty cubits, their pillars ten, and their sockets ten; the hooks of the pillars and their fillets of silver.
13 And for the east side eastward fifty cubits.
14 The hangings of the one side of the gate were fifteen cubits; their pillars three, and their sockets three.
15 And for the other side of the court gate, on this hand and that hand, were hangings of fifteen cubits; their pillars three, and their sockets three.
16 All the hangings of the court round about were of fine twined linen.
17 And the sockets for the pillars were of brass; the hooks of the pillars and their fillets of silver; and the overlaying of their chapiters of silver; and all the pillars of the court were filleted with silver.
18 And the hanging for the gate of the court was needlework, of blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine twined linen: and twenty cubits was the length, and the height in the breadth was five cubits, answerable to the hangings of the court.
19 And their pillars were four, and their sockets of brass four; their hooks of silver, and the overlaying of their chapiters and their fillets of silver.
20 And all the pins of the tabernacle, and of the court round about, were of brass.
21 This is the sum of the tabernacle, even of the tabernacle of testimony, as it was counted, according to the commandment of Moses, for the service of the Levites, by the hand of Ithamar, son to Aaron the priest.
22 And Bezaleel the son Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah, made all that the Lord commanded Moses.
23 And with him was Aholiab, son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan, an engraver, and a cunning workman, and an embroiderer in blue, and in purple, and in scarlet, and fine linen.
24 All the gold that was occupied for the work in all the work of the holy place, even the gold of the offering, was twenty and nine talents, and seven hundred and thirty shekels, after the shekel of the sanctuary.
25 And the silver of them that were numbered of the congregation was an hundred talents, and a thousand seven hundred and threescore and fifteen shekels, after the shekel of the sanctuary:
26 A bekah for every man, that is, half a shekel, after the shekel of the sanctuary, for every one that went to be numbered, from twenty years old and upward, for six hundred thousand and three thousand and five hundred and fifty men.
27 And of the hundred talents of silver were cast the sockets of the sanctuary, and the sockets of the vail; an hundred sockets of the hundred talents, a talent for a socket.
28 And of the thousand seven hundred seventy and five shekels he made hooks for the pillars, and overlaid their chapiters, and filleted them.
29 And the brass of the offering was seventy talents, and two thousand and four hundred shekels.
30 And therewith he made the sockets to the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, and the brasen altar, and the brasen grate for it, and all the vessels of the altar,
31 And the sockets of the court round about, and the sockets of the court gate, and all the pins of the tabernacle, and all the pins of the court round about.
38 ( A ) Then he made the altar of burnt offering of acacia wood, [ a ] five cubits [ b ] long, and five cubits [ c ] wide, square, and three cubits [ d ] high. 2 And he made its horns on its four corners, its horns [ e ] being of one piece with it, and he overlaid it with [ f ] bronze. 3 He also made all the utensils of the altar, the pails, the shovels, the basins, the meat-forks, and the firepans; he made all its utensils of bronze. 4 And he made for the altar a grating of bronze netting beneath, under its ledge, reaching halfway up. 5 He also cast four rings on the four ends of the bronze grating as holders for the poles. 6 He made the poles of acacia wood and overlaid them with bronze. 7 Then he inserted the poles into the rings on the sides of the altar, with which to carry it. He made it hollow with planks.
8 ( B ) Moreover, he made the basin of bronze with its base of bronze, [ g ] from the mirrors of the serving women who served at the doorway of the tent of meeting.
9 ( C ) Then he made the courtyard: [ h ] for the south side the hangings of the courtyard were of fine twisted linen, a hundred cubits; 10 their twenty pillars, and their twenty bases, were made of bronze; the hooks of the pillars and their [ i ] bands were of silver. 11 For the north side there were a hundred cubits; their twenty pillars and their twenty bases were of bronze, the hooks of the pillars and their [ j ] bands were of silver. 12 For the west side there were hangings of fifty cubits with their ten pillars and their ten bases; the hooks of the pillars and their [ k ] bands were of silver. 13 For the [ l ] east side, fifty cubits. 14 The hangings for the one [ m ] side of the gate were fifteen cubits, with their three pillars and their three bases, 15 and so for the [ n ] other [ o ] side. [ p ] On both sides of the gate of the courtyard were hangings of fifteen cubits, with their three pillars and their three bases. 16 All the hangings of the courtyard all around were of fine twisted linen. 17 And the bases for the pillars were of bronze, the hooks of the pillars and their [ q ] bands, of silver; and the overlaying of their tops, of silver, and all the pillars of the courtyard were furnished with silver [ r ] bands. 18 Now the curtain of the gate of the courtyard was the work of the [ s ] weaver, of [ t ] violet, purple, and scarlet material and fine twisted linen. And the length was twenty cubits and the [ u ] height was five cubits, corresponding to the hangings of the courtyard. 19 Their four pillars and their four bases were of bronze; their hooks were of silver, and the overlaying of their tops and their [ v ] bands were of silver. 20 All the pegs of the [ w ] tabernacle and of the courtyard all around were of bronze.
21 [ x ] This is the number of the things for the [ y ] tabernacle, the [ z ] tabernacle of the testimony, as they were [ aa ] counted according to the [ ab ] command of Moses, for the service of the Levites, by the hand of Ithamar the son of Aaron the priest. 22 Now ( D ) Bezalel the son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah, made everything that the Lord had commanded Moses. 23 With him was ( E ) Oholiab the son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan, an engraver and a skilled embroiderer, and a [ ac ] weaver in violet, in purple, and in scarlet material , and fine linen.
24 All the gold that was used for the work, in all the work of the sanctuary, [ ad ] which was the gold of the wave offering, was twenty-nine [ ae ] talents and 730 [ af ] shekels, according to ( F ) the shekel of the sanctuary. 25 And ( G ) the silver of those of the congregation who were [ ag ] counted was a hundred talents and 1,775 shekels, according to the shekel of the sanctuary; 26 ( H ) a beka a head ( that is , half a shekel according to the shekel of the sanctuary), assessed to each one who passed over to those who were [ ah ] counted, from twenty years old and upward, for ( I ) 603,550 men. 27 The hundred talents of silver were used for casting the bases of the sanctuary and the bases of the veil; a hundred bases for the hundred talents, a talent for a base. 28 And of the 1,775 shekels , he made hooks for the pillars, and overlaid their tops and made [ ai ] bands for them. 29 And the bronze of the wave offering was seventy talents and 2,400 shekels. 30 With it he made the bases to the doorway of the tent of meeting, and the bronze altar and its bronze grating, and all the utensils of the altar, 31 and the bases of the courtyard all around and the bases of the gate of the courtyard, and all the pegs of the [ aj ] tabernacle and all the pegs of the courtyard all around.
38 They [ a ] built the altar of burnt offering of acacia wood, three cubits [ b ] high; it was square, five cubits long and five cubits wide. [ c ] 2 They made a horn at each of the four corners, so that the horns and the altar were of one piece, and they overlaid the altar with bronze. ( B ) 3 They made all its utensils ( C ) of bronze—its pots, shovels, sprinkling bowls, meat forks and firepans. 4 They made a grating for the altar, a bronze network, to be under its ledge, halfway up the altar. 5 They cast bronze rings to hold the poles for the four corners of the bronze grating. 6 They made the poles of acacia wood and overlaid them with bronze. 7 They inserted the poles into the rings so they would be on the sides of the altar for carrying it. They made it hollow, out of boards.
8 They made the bronze basin ( D ) and its bronze stand from the mirrors of the women ( E ) who served at the entrance to the tent of meeting.
9 Next they made the courtyard. The south side was a hundred cubits [ d ] long and had curtains of finely twisted linen, 10 with twenty posts and twenty bronze bases, and with silver hooks and bands on the posts. 11 The north side was also a hundred cubits long and had twenty posts and twenty bronze bases, with silver hooks and bands on the posts.
12 The west end was fifty cubits [ e ] wide and had curtains, with ten posts and ten bases, with silver hooks and bands on the posts. 13 The east end, toward the sunrise, was also fifty cubits wide. 14 Curtains fifteen cubits [ f ] long were on one side of the entrance, with three posts and three bases, 15 and curtains fifteen cubits long were on the other side of the entrance to the courtyard, with three posts and three bases. 16 All the curtains around the courtyard were of finely twisted linen. 17 The bases for the posts were bronze. The hooks and bands on the posts were silver, and their tops were overlaid with silver; so all the posts of the courtyard had silver bands.
18 The curtain for the entrance to the courtyard was made of blue, purple and scarlet yarn and finely twisted linen—the work of an embroiderer. It was twenty cubits [ g ] long and, like the curtains of the courtyard, five cubits [ h ] high, 19 with four posts and four bronze bases. Their hooks and bands were silver, and their tops were overlaid with silver. 20 All the tent pegs ( G ) of the tabernacle and of the surrounding courtyard were bronze.
21 These are the amounts of the materials used for the tabernacle, the tabernacle of the covenant law, ( H ) which were recorded at Moses’ command by the Levites under the direction of Ithamar ( I ) son of Aaron, the priest. 22 (Bezalel ( J ) son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah, made everything the Lord commanded Moses; 23 with him was Oholiab ( K ) son of Ahisamak, of the tribe of Dan—an engraver and designer, and an embroiderer in blue, purple and scarlet yarn and fine linen.) 24 The total amount of the gold from the wave offering used for all the work on the sanctuary ( L ) was 29 talents and 730 shekels, [ i ] according to the sanctuary shekel. ( M )
25 The silver obtained from those of the community who were counted in the census ( N ) was 100 talents [ j ] and 1,775 shekels, [ k ] according to the sanctuary shekel— 26 one beka per person, ( O ) that is, half a shekel, [ l ] according to the sanctuary shekel, ( P ) from everyone who had crossed over to those counted, twenty years old or more, ( Q ) a total of 603,550 men. ( R ) 27 The 100 talents of silver were used to cast the bases ( S ) for the sanctuary and for the curtain—100 bases from the 100 talents, one talent for each base. 28 They used the 1,775 shekels to make the hooks for the posts, to overlay the tops of the posts, and to make their bands.
29 The bronze from the wave offering was 70 talents and 2,400 shekels. [ m ] 30 They used it to make the bases for the entrance to the tent of meeting, the bronze altar with its bronze grating and all its utensils, 31 the bases for the surrounding courtyard and those for its entrance and all the tent pegs for the tabernacle and those for the surrounding courtyard.
