34 The Lord said to Moses, ‘Cut two flat stones like the first stones. Then I will write on them all the words that I wrote on the first stones. Those were the stones that you broke into pieces. [ a ] 2 Make yourself ready in the morning and come up Sinai mountain. Stand there, ready to meet me on the top of the mountain. 3 Nobody must come with you. Nobody must go anywhere on the mountain. Even your sheep and your cows must not eat grass near the bottom of the mountain.’
4 So Moses cut two flat stones like the first stones. Early in the morning, he went up Sinai mountain, as the Lord had commanded him. He carried the two flat stones in his hands. 5 Then the Lord came down in the cloud. He came and he stood with Moses. The Lord spoke aloud his own name, the Lord .
6 The Lord passed in front of Moses. He said in a loud voice, ‘I am the Lord ! The Lord ! I am kind to people and I forgive them. I do not quickly become angry. My faithful love for my people continues for ever, and I am always faithful. 7 I faithfully love thousands of people. I forgive their sins when they turn against me. But if people are guilty, I surely punish them. I punish their children, their grandchildren and their grandchildren's children.’
8 Then Moses quickly bent down low to worship the Lord . 9 He said, ‘Lord, my God, if you are pleased with me, please travel with us! It is true that these people are proud and they often do not obey you. But please forgive all our sins. Please accept us as your own people.’
10 Then the Lord said, ‘I will make a covenant with the Israelites. I will do great miracles for them to see. Nobody in any nation anywhere in the world has ever done such great things. All the people who live near you will see the great things that I, the Lord , will do. The powerful things that I do among you will make them very afraid.
11 Obey the commands that I am giving you today. Then I will chase out the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Hivites and the Jebusites, as you move into the land. 12 Do not make any agreements with those people in the land where you are going. If you become their friends, they would teach you to do wrong things. 13 Instead, you must knock down their altars. Destroy the special stones that are their idols. Cut down their Asherah poles. 14 Do not worship any other god instead of me. I am the Lord and I want you to belong to me alone.
15 Be careful not to make an agreement with the people who live in that land. They have turned away to worship their own gods. They offer sacrifices to their gods. When they do that, they may ask you to join with them. Then you will eat the food that they have offered to their gods. 16 Perhaps you may choose some of their daughters for your sons to marry. Their daughters will continue to worship their gods. Then they will teach your sons to turn away from me and worship their gods.
17 Do not melt metal to make images of false gods.
18 Eat the Feast of Flat Bread every year. Eat bread that has no yeast in it for seven days, as I commanded you. Do this on the right day in the month of Abib. That is the month that you came out from Egypt.
19 Every firstborn child that a woman gives birth to belongs to me. That is also true for every firstborn male that your animals give birth to. That includes your cows and your sheep. 20 For a firstborn donkey, you may pay for it with a lamb instead. If you do not pay for it, you must break the donkey's neck. You must pay me back for every firstborn son that you have.
Nobody may come to worship me without an offering to give me.
21 You may work for six days each week, but on the seventh day you must rest. That is true even when it is the time to plough your fields. It is also true at harvest time. You must rest on the seventh day each week.
22 Eat the Feast of Weeks every year when you cut the first wheat in your fields. Eat the Feast of Harvest at the end of each year. [ b ] 23 Three times in every year, all your men must come to worship the Lord God, the God of Israel. 24 I will chase the nations out of the land as you move in. I will give you more and more land to live in. Three times each year you must come to worship the Lord your God. When you do that, nobody will try to take your land for themselves.
25 When you offer the blood of an animal to me as your sacrifice, do not also offer any bread with yeast in it. When you kill a lamb for the Passover sacrifice, do not keep any of the meat until the next morning.
26 When you cut the first crops from your fields, bring the best food to the house of the Lord your God.
Do not cook a young goat in its mother's milk.’
27 Then the Lord said to Moses, ‘Write down these words. They are the rules of the covenant that I have made with you and with the Israelites.’
28 Moses was there on the mountain with the Lord for 40 days and 40 nights. He did not eat anything or drink anything during that time. He wrote the words of God's covenant on the flat stones. Those were God's ten special commands.
29 Moses came down from Sinai mountain. He carried the two stones of the covenant in his hands. As he came down the mountain, he did not know that his face was shining. His face was shining because he had spoken with the Lord . 30 When Aaron and all the Israelites saw Moses, they could see that his face was shining. They were afraid to come near him. 31 But Moses called out to them. So Aaron and the leaders of the people came back to him. Then Moses talked to them. 32 After this, all the Israelites came near to Moses. He told them all the commands that the Lord had given to him on Sinai mountain.
33 When Moses had finished speaking to the people, he covered his face with a thin cloth. 34 But when he went into the special tent to speak with the Lord , he would remove the cloth. When he came out again, he would tell God's commands to the Israelites. 35 They could see that his face was shining. So Moses would put the thin cloth over his face again. The cloth would stay on his face until he went into the special tent again to speak with the Lord .
34 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Make two more stone tablets like the first two that were broken. I will write the same words on these stones that were written on the first two stones. 2 Be ready tomorrow morning and come up on Mount Sinai. Stand before me there on the top of the mountain. 3 No one will be allowed to come with you. No one should even be seen anywhere on the mountain. Even your herds of animals or flocks of sheep will not be allowed to eat grass at the bottom of the mountain.”
4 So Moses made two more stone tablets like the first ones. Early the next morning Moses went up Mount Sinai, just as the Lord had commanded. Moses carried the two stone tablets with him. 5 Then the Lord came down to him in a cloud, stood there with Moses, and spoke his own name. 6 That is, the Lord passed in front of Moses and said, “ Yahweh , the Lord , is a kind and merciful God. He is slow to become angry. He is full of great love. He can be trusted. 7 He shows his faithful love to thousands of people. [ a ] He forgives people for the wrong things they do, but he does not forget to punish guilty people. Not only will he punish the guilty people, but their children, their grandchildren, and their great-grandchildren will also suffer for the bad things these people do.”
8 Then Moses quickly bowed to the ground and worshiped the Lord. Moses said, 9 “Lord, if you are pleased with me, please go with us. I know that these are stubborn people, but forgive us for the bad things we did. Accept us as your people.”
10 Then the Lord said, “I am making this agreement with all of your people. I will do amazing things that have never before been done for any other nation on earth. The people with you will see that I, the Lord , am very great. They will see the wonderful things that I will do for you. 11 Obey what I command you today, and I will force your enemies to leave your land. I will force out the Amorites, Canaanites, Hittites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites. 12 Be careful! Don’t make any agreement with the people who live in the land where you are going. If you make an agreement with them, it will bring you trouble. 13 So destroy their altars, break the stones they worship, and cut down their idols. [ b ] 14 Don’t worship any other god. I am Yahweh Kanah —the jealous Lord . That is my name. I hate for my people to worship other gods. [ c ]
15 “Be careful not to make any agreements with the people who live in that land. If you do this, you might join them when they worship their gods. They will invite you to join them, and you will eat their sacrifices. 16 You might choose some of their daughters as wives for your sons. Those daughters serve false gods. They might lead your sons to do the same thing.
17 “Don’t make idols.
18 “Celebrate the Festival of Unleavened Bread. For seven days, eat the bread made without yeast as I commanded you before. Do this during the month I have chosen, the month of Abib, because that is the month you came out of Egypt.
19 “A woman’s first baby always belongs to me. Even the first animals that are born from your cattle or sheep belong to me. 20 If you want to keep a donkey that is the first born, then you can buy it with a lamb. But if you don’t buy that donkey with a lamb, you must break the donkey’s neck. You must buy back all of your firstborn sons from me. No one should come before me without a gift.
21 “You will work for six days, but on the seventh day you must rest. You must rest even during the times of planting and harvesting.
22 “Celebrate the Festival of Harvest. Use the first grain from the wheat harvest for this festival. And in the fall [ d ] celebrate the Festival of Shelters.
23 “Three times each year all your men must go to be with the Lord God , the God of Israel.
24 “When you go into your land, I will force your enemies out of that land. I will expand your borders—you will get more and more land. You will go before the Lord your God three times each year. At that time no one will try to take your land from you.
25 “When you kill an animal and offer its blood as a sacrifice, you must not include anything that has yeast in it.
“Don’t let any of the meat from the Passover meal remain until morning.
26 “Give the Lord the very first crops that you harvest. Bring them to the house [ e ] of the Lord your God.
“Never cook a young goat in its mother’s milk.”
27 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Write everything that I have told you. This is the agreement that I made with you and the Israelites.”
28 Moses stayed there with the Lord for 40 days and 40 nights. Moses did not eat any food or drink any water. And he wrote the words of the agreement (the Ten Commandments) on the two stone tablets.
29 When Moses came down from Mount Sinai, he carried the two stone tablets of the agreement. Because he had talked with the Lord, his face was shining, but he did not know it. 30 Aaron and all the people of Israel saw that Moses’ face was shining bright. So they were afraid to go near him. 31 But Moses called to them. So Aaron and all the leaders of the people went to him. Moses talked with them. 32 After that all the Israelites came near Moses, and he gave them the commands that the Lord had given him on Mount Sinai.
33 When Moses finished speaking to the people, he put a covering over his face. 34 Any time Moses went before the Lord to speak with him, Moses took off the covering. Then Moses would come out and tell the Israelites what the Lord commanded. 35 The people would see that Moses’ face was shining bright, so he would cover his face again. He kept his face covered until the next time he went in to speak with the Lord.
34 And the Lord said unto Moses, Hew thee two tables of stone like unto the first: and I will write upon these tables the words that were in the first tables, which thou brakest.
2 And be ready in the morning, and come up in the morning unto mount Sinai, and present thyself there to me in the top of the mount.
3 And no man shall come up with thee, neither let any man be seen throughout all the mount; neither let the flocks nor herds feed before that mount.
4 And he hewed two tables of stone like unto the first; and Moses rose up early in the morning, and went up unto mount Sinai, as the Lord had commanded him, and took in his hand the two tables of stone.
5 And the Lord descended in the cloud, and stood with him there, and proclaimed the name of the Lord .
6 And the Lord passed by before him, and proclaimed, The Lord , The Lord God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth,
7 Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and that will by no means clear the guilty; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the children's children, unto the third and to the fourth generation.
8 And Moses made haste, and bowed his head toward the earth, and worshipped.
9 And he said, If now I have found grace in thy sight, O Lord , let my Lord , I pray thee, go among us; for it is a stiffnecked people; and pardon our iniquity and our sin, and take us for thine inheritance.
10 And he said, Behold, I make a covenant: before all thy people I will do marvels, such as have not been done in all the earth, nor in any nation: and all the people among which thou art shall see the work of the Lord : for it is a terrible thing that I will do with thee.
11 Observe thou that which I command thee this day: behold, I drive out before thee the Amorite, and the Canaanite, and the Hittite, and the Perizzite, and the Hivite, and the Jebusite.
12 Take heed to thyself, lest thou make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land whither thou goest, lest it be for a snare in the midst of thee:
13 But ye shall destroy their altars, break their images, and cut down their groves:
14 For thou shalt worship no other god: for the Lord , whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God:
15 Lest thou make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land, and they go a whoring after their gods, and do sacrifice unto their gods, and one call thee, and thou eat of his sacrifice;
16 And thou take of their daughters unto thy sons, and their daughters go a whoring after their gods, and make thy sons go a whoring after their gods.
17 Thou shalt make thee no molten gods.
18 The feast of unleavened bread shalt thou keep. Seven days thou shalt eat unleavened bread, as I commanded thee, in the time of the month Abib: for in the month Abib thou camest out from Egypt.
19 All that openeth the matrix is mine; and every firstling among thy cattle, whether ox or sheep, that is male.
20 But the firstling of an ass thou shalt redeem with a lamb: and if thou redeem him not, then shalt thou break his neck. All the firstborn of thy sons thou shalt redeem. And none shall appear before me empty.
21 Six days thou shalt work, but on the seventh day thou shalt rest: in earing time and in harvest thou shalt rest.
22 And thou shalt observe the feast of weeks, of the firstfruits of wheat harvest, and the feast of ingathering at the year's end.
23 Thrice in the year shall all your menchildren appear before the Lord God, the God of Israel.
24 For I will cast out the nations before thee, and enlarge thy borders: neither shall any man desire thy land, when thou shalt go up to appear before the Lord thy God thrice in the year.
25 Thou shalt not offer the blood of my sacrifice with leaven; neither shall the sacrifice of the feast of the passover be left unto the morning.
26 The first of the firstfruits of thy land thou shalt bring unto the house of the Lord thy God. Thou shalt not seethe a kid in his mother's milk.
27 And the Lord said unto Moses, Write thou these words: for after the tenor of these words I have made a covenant with thee and with Israel.
28 And he was there with the Lord forty days and forty nights; he did neither eat bread, nor drink water. And he wrote upon the tables the words of the covenant, the ten commandments.
29 And it came to pass, when Moses came down from mount Sinai with the two tables of testimony in Moses' hand, when he came down from the mount, that Moses wist not that the skin of his face shone while he talked with him.
30 And when Aaron and all the children of Israel saw Moses, behold, the skin of his face shone; and they were afraid to come nigh him.
31 And Moses called unto them; and Aaron and all the rulers of the congregation returned unto him: and Moses talked with them.
32 And afterward all the children of Israel came nigh: and he gave them in commandment all that the Lord had spoken with him in mount Sinai.
33 And till Moses had done speaking with them, he put a vail on his face.
34 But when Moses went in before the Lord to speak with him, he took the vail off, until he came out. And he came out, and spake unto the children of Israel that which he was commanded.
35 And the children of Israel saw the face of Moses, that the skin of Moses' face shone: and Moses put the vail upon his face again, until he went in to speak with him.
34 Now the Lord said to Moses, “Cut out for yourself ( A ) two stone tablets like the former ones, and ( B ) I will write on the tablets the words that were on the former tablets which you smashed. 2 So be ready by morning, and come up in the morning to ( C ) Mount Sinai, and [ a ] present yourself there to Me on the top of the mountain. 3 And ( D ) no one is to come up with you, nor let anyone be seen [ b ] anywhere on the mountain; even the flocks and the herds are not to graze in front of that mountain.” 4 So he cut out ( E ) two stone tablets like the former ones, and Moses got up early in the morning and went up to Mount Sinai, as the Lord had commanded him, and he took the two stone tablets in his hand. 5 And ( F ) the Lord descended in the cloud and stood there with him as he [ c ] called upon the name of the Lord . 6 Then the Lord passed by in front of him and proclaimed, “The Lord , the Lord God, ( G ) compassionate and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in faithfulness and [ d ] truth; 7 who ( H ) keeps faithfulness for thousands, who forgives wrongdoing, violation of His Law , and sin; yet He ( I ) will by no means leave the guilty unpunished, ( J ) inflicting the [ e ] punishment of fathers on the children and on the grandchildren to the third and fourth generations.” 8 And Moses hurried [ f ] ( K ) to bow low toward the ground and worship. 9 Then he said, “ ( L ) If in any way I have found favor in Your sight, Lord, please may the Lord go along in our midst, even though [ g ] ( M ) the people are so obstinate, and ( N ) pardon our wrongdoing and our sin, and ( O ) take us as Your own [ h ] possession.”
10 Then [ i ] God said, “Behold, ( P ) I am going to make a covenant. Before all your people ( Q ) I will perform miracles which have not been [ j ] produced in all the earth nor among any of the nations; and all the people [ k ] among whom you live will see the working of the Lord , for it is a fearful thing that I am going to perform with you.
11 “ [ l ] Be sure to comply with what I am commanding you this day: behold, ( R ) I am going to drive out the Amorite from you, and the Canaanite, the Hittite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite. 12 ( S ) Be careful that you do not make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land into which you are going, or it will become a snare in your midst. 13 ( T ) But rather , you are to tear down their altars and smash their memorial stones, and cut down their [ m ] ( U ) Asherim 14 —for ( V ) you shall not worship any other god, because the Lord , whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God— 15 otherwise you might make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land, and they would prostitute themselves with their gods and ( W ) sacrifice to their gods, and someone ( X ) might invite you [ n ] to eat of his sacrifice, 16 and ( Y ) you might take some of his daughters for your sons, and his daughters might prostitute themselves with their gods and cause your sons also to prostitute themselves with their gods. 17 ( Z ) You shall not make for yourself any gods cast in metal.
18 “You shall keep ( AA ) the Feast of Unleavened Bread. For ( AB ) seven days you are to eat unleavened bread, [ o ] as I commanded you, at the appointed time in the ( AC ) month of Abib; for in the month of Abib you came out of Egypt.
19 “ ( AD ) The [ p ] firstborn from every womb belongs to Me, and all your male livestock, the [ q ] firstborn from [ r ] cattle and sheep. 20 ( AE ) You shall redeem with a lamb the firstborn from a donkey; and if you do not redeem it , then you shall break its neck. You shall redeem ( AF ) all the firstborn of your sons. [ s ] ( AG ) None are to appear before Me empty-handed.
21 “You shall work ( AH ) six days, but on the seventh day you shall rest; even during plowing time and harvest you shall rest. 22 And you shall celebrate ( AI ) the Feast of Weeks, that is , the first fruits of the wheat harvest, and the Feast of Ingathering at the turn of the year. 23 ( AJ ) Three times a year all your males are to appear before the Lord [ t ] God , the God of Israel. 24 For I will [ u ] ( AK ) drive out nations from you and enlarge your borders, and no one will covet your land when you go up three times a year to appear before the Lord your God.
25 “ ( AL ) You shall not [ v ] offer the blood of My sacrifice with leavened bread, ( AM ) nor is the sacrifice of the Feast of the Passover to [ w ] be left over until morning.
26 “You shall bring ( AN ) the very first of the first fruits of your soil into the house of the Lord your God.
“You shall not boil a young goat in its mother’s milk.”
27 Then the Lord said to Moses, “ ( AO ) Write [ x ] down these words, for in accordance with these words I have made ( AP ) a covenant with you and with Israel.” 28 So he was there with the Lord for ( AQ ) forty days and forty nights; he did not eat bread or drink water. And [ y ] ( AR ) He wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant, ( AS ) the Ten [ z ] Commandments.
29 And it came about, when Moses was coming down from Mount Sinai (and the ( AT ) two tablets of the testimony were in Moses’ hand as he was coming down from the mountain), that Moses did not know that ( AU ) the skin of his face shone because of his speaking with Him. 30 So when Aaron and all the sons of Israel saw Moses, behold, the skin of his face shone, and ( AV ) they were afraid to approach him. 31 Then Moses called to them, and Aaron and all the rulers in the congregation returned to him; and Moses spoke to them. 32 Afterward all the sons of Israel came near, and he commanded them to do everything that the Lord had spoken [ aa ] to him on Mount Sinai. 33 When Moses had finished speaking with them, ( AW ) he put a veil over his face. 34 But whenever Moses went in before the Lord to speak with Him, ( AX ) he would take off the veil until he came out; and whenever he came out and spoke to the sons of Israel what he had been commanded, 35 ( AY ) the sons of Israel would see the face of Moses, that the skin of Moses’ face shone. So Moses would put the veil back over his face until he went in to speak with Him.
34 The Lord said to Moses, “Chisel out two stone tablets like the first ones, ( A ) and I will write on them the words that were on the first tablets, ( B ) which you broke. ( C ) 2 Be ready in the morning, and then come up on Mount Sinai. ( D ) Present yourself to me there on top of the mountain. 3 No one is to come with you or be seen anywhere on the mountain; ( E ) not even the flocks and herds may graze in front of the mountain.”
4 So Moses chiseled ( F ) out two stone tablets like the first ones and went up Mount Sinai early in the morning, as the Lord had commanded him; and he carried the two stone tablets in his hands. ( G ) 5 Then the Lord came down in the cloud ( H ) and stood there with him and proclaimed his name, the Lord . ( I ) 6 And he passed in front of Moses, proclaiming, “The Lord , the Lord , the compassionate ( J ) and gracious God, slow to anger, ( K ) abounding in love ( L ) and faithfulness, ( M ) 7 maintaining love to thousands, ( N ) and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin. ( O ) Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished; ( P ) he punishes the children and their children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation.” ( Q )
8 Moses bowed to the ground at once and worshiped. 9 “Lord,” he said, “if I have found favor ( R ) in your eyes, then let the Lord go with us. ( S ) Although this is a stiff-necked ( T ) people, forgive our wickedness and our sin, ( U ) and take us as your inheritance.” ( V )
10 Then the Lord said: “I am making a covenant ( W ) with you. Before all your people I will do wonders ( X ) never before done in any nation in all the world. ( Y ) The people you live among will see how awesome is the work that I, the Lord , will do for you. 11 Obey what I command ( Z ) you today. I will drive out before you the Amorites, Canaanites, Hittites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites. ( AA ) 12 Be careful not to make a treaty ( AB ) with those who live in the land where you are going, or they will be a snare ( AC ) among you. 13 Break down their altars, smash their sacred stones and cut down their Asherah poles. [ a ] ( AD ) 14 Do not worship any other god, ( AE ) for the Lord , whose name ( AF ) is Jealous, is a jealous God. ( AG )
15 “Be careful not to make a treaty ( AH ) with those who live in the land; for when they prostitute ( AI ) themselves to their gods and sacrifice to them, they will invite you and you will eat their sacrifices. ( AJ ) 16 And when you choose some of their daughters as wives ( AK ) for your sons and those daughters prostitute themselves to their gods, ( AL ) they will lead your sons to do the same.
17 “Do not make any idols. ( AM )
18 “Celebrate the Festival of Unleavened Bread. ( AN ) For seven days eat bread made without yeast, ( AO ) as I commanded you. Do this at the appointed time in the month of Aviv, ( AP ) for in that month you came out of Egypt.
19 “The first offspring ( AQ ) of every womb belongs to me, including all the firstborn males of your livestock, whether from herd or flock. 20 Redeem the firstborn donkey with a lamb, but if you do not redeem it, break its neck. ( AR ) Redeem all your firstborn sons. ( AS )
“No one is to appear before me empty-handed. ( AT )
21 “Six days you shall labor, but on the seventh day you shall rest; ( AU ) even during the plowing season and harvest ( AV ) you must rest.
22 “Celebrate the Festival of Weeks with the firstfruits ( AW ) of the wheat harvest, and the Festival of Ingathering ( AX ) at the turn of the year. [ b ] 23 Three times ( AY ) a year all your men are to appear before the Sovereign Lord , the God of Israel. 24 I will drive out nations ( AZ ) before you and enlarge your territory, ( BA ) and no one will covet your land when you go up three times each year to appear before the Lord your God.
25 “Do not offer the blood of a sacrifice to me along with anything containing yeast, ( BB ) and do not let any of the sacrifice from the Passover Festival remain until morning. ( BC )

27 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Write ( BF ) down these words, for in accordance with these words I have made a covenant ( BG ) with you and with Israel.” 28 Moses was there with the Lord forty days and forty nights ( BH ) without eating bread or drinking water. ( BI ) And he wrote on the tablets ( BJ ) the words of the covenant—the Ten Commandments. ( BK )
29 When Moses came down from Mount Sinai ( BL ) with the two tablets of the covenant law in his hands, ( BM ) he was not aware that his face was radiant ( BN ) because he had spoken with the Lord . 30 When Aaron and all the Israelites saw Moses, his face was radiant, and they were afraid to come near him. 31 But Moses called to them; so Aaron and all the leaders of the community ( BO ) came back to him, and he spoke to them. 32 Afterward all the Israelites came near him, and he gave them all the commands ( BP ) the Lord had given him on Mount Sinai.
33 When Moses finished speaking to them, he put a veil ( BQ ) over his face. 34 But whenever he entered the Lord ’s presence to speak with him, he removed the veil until he came out. And when he came out and told the Israelites what he had been commanded, 35 they saw that his face was radiant. ( BR ) Then Moses would put the veil back over his face until he went in to speak with the Lord .
