Bezalel and Oholiab

31 Then the Lord said to Moses, 2 ‘Look! I have chosen Bezalel, the son of Uri and the grandson of Hur. He belongs to the tribe of Judah. 3 I have filled him with my Spirit so that he has special skills. He knows how to make many kinds of things. 4 He can draw pictures of beautiful things that he wants to make. Then he uses gold, silver or bronze to make them. 5 He knows how to cut valuable stones and make them look beautiful. He knows how to cut wood into different shapes. He is very clever at all kinds of work.

6 I have also chosen Oholiab to help Bezalel. Oholiab is the son of Ahisamach. He belongs to the tribe of Dan. I have also helped all the workers who have special skills. They will be able to make everything that I have commanded you to make. 7 They will make these things:

the Tent of Meeting,

the Covenant Box with its special lid,

the other things that will be in the tabernacle.

8 Those things include:

the special table with all its tools,

the pure gold lampstand with all its tools,

the altar for incense,

9 the altar for burnt offerings with all its tools,

the large bowl for water and its base,

10 the beautiful clothes for Aaron the priest,

the clothes for his sons as they serve as priests,

11 the special oil to show that things belong to me,

and the sweet incense for the Holy Place.

The workers must make all these things in the way that I have commanded you.’

The Sabbath day

12 Then the Lord said to Moses, 13 ‘Say to the Israelites, “You must keep my Sabbath days as special days. This will help you and your descendants to remember that you belong to me. You will remember that I, the Lord , have chosen you to be my people.

14 The Sabbath day must be special for you, because it is a holy day. If anyone does not make the Sabbath a special day, you must punish him with death. If anyone does any work on a Sabbath day, he can no longer belong to my people. 15 You may work for six days each week, but the seventh day is a day of rest. It is a holy day that is special to me, the Lord . If anyone does any work on a Sabbath day, you must punish him with death. 16 The Israelites must always keep the Sabbath as a special day. They must obey the rules for the Sabbath day. Those rules are part of my covenant with my people that continues for ever. 17 It will always be a sign that I have chosen the Israelites to be my people. You will remember that the Lord made the heavens and the earth in six days. Then, on the seventh day, he stopped working and he rested.” ’

18 The Lord finished speaking to Moses on Sinai mountain. Then he gave Moses the two flat stones with the special commands that God himself had written on them.

Bezalel and Oholiab

31 Then the Lord said to Moses, 2 “I have chosen a man from the tribe of Judah to do some special work for me. His name is Bezalel son of Uri son of Hur. 3 I have filled Bezalel with the Spirit of God—I have given him the skill and knowledge to do all kinds of things. 4 He is a very good designer. And he can make things from gold, silver, and bronze. 5 He can cut and set beautiful jewels. And he can work with wood. He can do all kinds of work. 6 I have also chosen Oholiab to work with him. Oholiab is the son of Ahisamach from the tribe of Dan. And I have given skills to all the other workers so that they can make everything that I have commanded you:

7 the Meeting Tent;

the Box of the Agreement;

the mercy-cover that is on it;

8 the table and everything on it;

the pure gold lampstand and everything used with it;

the altar for burning incense;

9 the altar for burning offerings and the things used at the altar;

the bowl and the base under it;

10 the special clothes for Aaron the priest;

the special clothes for Aaron’s sons when they serve as priests;

11 the sweet-smelling anointing oil;

the sweet-smelling incense for the Holy Place.

These workers must make everything the way that I have commanded you.”

The Sabbath

12 Then the Lord said to Moses, 13 “Tell the Israelites this: ‘You must follow the rules about my special days of rest. You must do this because they will be a sign between you and me for all generations. This will show you that I, the Lord , have made you my special people.

14 “‘Make the Sabbath a special day. If someone treats the Sabbath like any other day, that person must be killed. Whoever works on the Sabbath day must be separated from their people. 15 There are six other days in the week for working. But the seventh day is a very special day of rest. That is the special day to honor the Lord . Anyone who works during the Sabbath must be killed. 16 The Israelites must remember the Sabbath and make it a special day. They must continue to do this forever. It is an agreement between them and me that will continue forever. 17 The Sabbath will be a sign between me and the Israelites forever.’” (The Lord worked six days and made the sky and the earth, and on the seventh day he rested and relaxed.)

18 When God finished speaking to Moses on Mount Sinai, he gave him the two stone tablets of the agreement. God had written on the stones with his finger.

31 And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,

2 See, I have called by name Bezaleel the son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah:

3 And I have filled him with the spirit of God, in wisdom, and in understanding, and in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship,

4 To devise cunning works, to work in gold, and in silver, and in brass,

5 And in cutting of stones, to set them, and in carving of timber, to work in all manner of workmanship.

6 And I, behold, I have given with him Aholiab, the son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan: and in the hearts of all that are wise hearted I have put wisdom, that they may make all that I have commanded thee;

7 The tabernacle of the congregation, and the ark of the testimony, and the mercy seat that is thereupon, and all the furniture of the tabernacle,

8 And the table and his furniture, and the pure candlestick with all his furniture, and the altar of incense,

9 And the altar of burnt offering with all his furniture, and the laver and his foot,

10 And the cloths of service, and the holy garments for Aaron the priest, and the garments of his sons, to minister in the priest's office,

11 And the anointing oil, and sweet incense for the holy place: according to all that I have commanded thee shall they do.

12 And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,

13 Speak thou also unto the children of Israel, saying, Verily my sabbaths ye shall keep: for it is a sign between me and you throughout your generations; that ye may know that I am the Lord that doth sanctify you.

14 Ye shall keep the sabbath therefore; for it is holy unto you: every one that defileth it shall surely be put to death: for whosoever doeth any work therein, that soul shall be cut off from among his people.

15 Six days may work be done; but in the seventh is the sabbath of rest, holy to the Lord : whosoever doeth any work in the sabbath day, he shall surely be put to death.

16 Wherefore the children of Israel shall keep the sabbath, to observe the sabbath throughout their generations, for a perpetual covenant.

17 It is a sign between me and the children of Israel for ever: for in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day he rested, and was refreshed.

18 And he gave unto Moses, when he had made an end of communing with him upon mount Sinai, two tables of testimony, tables of stone, written with the finger of God.

The Skilled Craftsmen

31 ( A ) Now the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 2 “See, I have called by name Bezalel, the ( B ) son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah. 3 And I have ( C ) filled him with the Spirit of God in wisdom, in understanding, in knowledge, and in all kinds of [ a ] craftsmanship, 4 to create [ b ] artistic designs for work in gold, in silver, and in [ c ] bronze, 5 and in the cutting of stones [ d ] for settings, and in the carving of wood, so that he may work in all kinds of [ e ] craftsmanship. 6 And behold, I Myself have [ f ] appointed with him ( D ) Oholiab, the son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan; and in the hearts of all who are [ g ] skillful I have put [ h ] skill, so that they may make everything that I have commanded you: 7 ( E ) the tent of meeting, ( F ) the ark of testimony, ( G ) the [ i ] atoning cover that is on it, and all the furniture of the tent, 8 ( H ) the table and its [ j ] utensils, the ( I ) pure gold lampstand with all its [ k ] utensils, and ( J ) the altar of incense, 9 ( K ) the altar of burnt offering with all its [ l ] utensils, and ( L ) the basin and its stand, 10 the [ m ] ( M ) woven garments as well: the holy garments for Aaron the priest and the garments of his sons, with which to [ n ] carry out their priesthood; 11 ( N ) the anointing oil also, and the ( O ) fragrant incense for the Holy Place, they are to make them according to everything that I have commanded you.”

The Sign of the Sabbath

12 Now the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 13 “Now as for you, speak to the sons of Israel, saying, ‘ ( P ) You must keep My Sabbaths; for this is ( Q ) a sign between Me and you throughout your generations, so that you may know that I am the Lord who sanctifies you. 14 Therefore you are to keep the Sabbath, for it is holy to you. ( R ) Everyone who profanes it must be put to death; for whoever does any work on it, that person shall be cut off from among his people. 15 ( S ) For six days work may be done, but on the seventh day there is a ( T ) Sabbath of complete rest, holy to the Lord ; ( U ) whoever does any work on the Sabbath day must be put to death. 16 So the sons of Israel shall keep the Sabbath, to [ o ] celebrate the Sabbath throughout their generations as a permanent covenant.’ 17 ( V ) It is a sign between Me and the sons of Israel forever; ( W ) for in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, but on the seventh day He ceased from labor , and was refreshed.”

18 When He had finished speaking with him on Mount Sinai, He gave Moses ( X ) the two tablets of the testimony, tablets of stone, ( Y ) written by the finger of God.
