- Exodus Chapter 11
11 The Lord said to Moses, ‘I will cause Pharaoh and Egypt to have one more trouble. Then Pharaoh will let you go out of Egypt. He will cause you to leave very quickly and go away from him. 2 So tell the Israelite people now what they must do. Every man and every woman must ask the Egyptians that live near them for gold things and silver things.’
3 The Lord caused the Egyptians to be kind to the Israelite people. As for Moses himself, Pharaoh's officers and the Egyptian people respected him as an important man.
4 So Moses went to the king and he said, ‘The Lord God says this: “At about midnight, I will travel through the whole country of Egypt. 5 I will cause all the firstborn sons in Egypt to die. The firstborn son of Pharaoh, king of Egypt, will die. The firstborn son of the female slave who makes flour, will die. Even the firstborn of the farm animals will die. [ a ] 6 Everyone will be crying loudly in the whole country of Egypt. Nothing like that has ever happened before now, and it will never happen again. 7 But no trouble will happen to the Israelite people. Not even a dog will frighten them or their animals. Then you will know that I, the Lord , make a difference between Egypt and Israel.” ’
8 Moses continued to say to the king, ‘All your officers will come to me. They will fall down in front of me and they will say, “Now go! Leave here with all your people.” After that, I will leave.’
After he said that, Moses left Pharaoh. Moses was very angry.
9 The Lord had already said to Moses, ‘Pharaoh will refuse to listen to you. But that will give me the chance to do even greater miracles in Egypt.’
10 Moses and Aaron did all these miracles in front of Pharaoh. But the Lord caused Pharaoh's mind to be hard. So Pharaoh would not let the Israelites leave his country.
11 Then the Lord told Moses, “I have one more disaster to bring against Pharaoh and Egypt. After this, he will ask you to leave Egypt. In fact, he will force you to leave this country. 2 You must give this message to the Israelites: ‘Men and women, you must ask your neighbors to give you things made of silver and gold.’” 3 The Lord caused the Egyptians to be kind to the Israelites. The Egyptians, even Pharaoh’s own officials, already considered Moses to be a great man.
4 Moses said to the king, “The Lord says, ‘At midnight tonight, I will go through Egypt, 5 and every firstborn son in Egypt will die, from the firstborn son of Pharaoh, the ruler of Egypt, to the firstborn son of the slave girl grinding grain. Even the firstborn animals will die. 6 The crying in Egypt will be worse than at any time in the past or any time in the future. 7 But none of the Israelites or their animals will be hurt—not even a dog will bark at them.’ Then you will know that the Lord has treated Israel differently from Egypt. 8 All these officials of yours will come down and bow to me. They will say, ‘Leave and take all your people with you.’ Only then will I leave!” Then in anger, Moses left the meeting with Pharaoh.
9 Then the Lord told Moses, “The reason Pharaoh did not listen to you is so that I could show my great power in Egypt.” 10 That is why Moses and Aaron did all these great miracles in front of Pharaoh. And that is why the Lord made Pharaoh so stubborn that he would not let the Israelites leave his country.
11 And the Lord said unto Moses, Yet will I bring one plague more upon Pharaoh, and upon Egypt; afterwards he will let you go hence: when he shall let you go, he shall surely thrust you out hence altogether.
2 Speak now in the ears of the people, and let every man borrow of his neighbour, and every woman of her neighbour, jewels of silver and jewels of gold.
3 And the Lord gave the people favour in the sight of the Egyptians. Moreover the man Moses was very great in the land of Egypt, in the sight of Pharaoh's servants, and in the sight of the people.
4 And Moses said, Thus saith the Lord , About midnight will I go out into the midst of Egypt:
5 And all the firstborn in the land of Egypt shall die, from the first born of Pharaoh that sitteth upon his throne, even unto the firstborn of the maidservant that is behind the mill; and all the firstborn of beasts.
6 And there shall be a great cry throughout all the land of Egypt, such as there was none like it, nor shall be like it any more.
7 But against any of the children of Israel shall not a dog move his tongue, against man or beast: that ye may know how that the Lord doth put a difference between the Egyptians and Israel.
8 And all these thy servants shall come down unto me, and bow down themselves unto me, saying, Get thee out, and all the people that follow thee: and after that I will go out. And he went out from Pharaoh in a great anger.
9 And the Lord said unto Moses, Pharaoh shall not hearken unto you; that my wonders may be multiplied in the land of Egypt.
10 And Moses and Aaron did all these wonders before Pharaoh: and the Lord hardened Pharaoh's heart, so that he would not let the children of Israel go out of his land.
11 Now the Lord said to Moses, “One more plague I will bring on Pharaoh and on Egypt; ( A ) after that he will let you go from here. When he lets you go, he will assuredly drive you out from here completely. 2 Speak now [ a ] so that the people hear, that ( B ) each man is to ask of his neighbor, and each woman of her neighbor, articles of silver and articles of gold.” 3 And ( C ) the Lord gave the people favor in the sight of the Egyptians. ( D ) Furthermore, the man Moses himself was [ b ] greatly esteemed in the land of Egypt, both in the sight of Pharaoh’s servants and in the sight of the people.
4 Then Moses said, “This is what the Lord says: ‘About ( E ) midnight I am going out into the midst of Egypt, 5 and ( F ) all the firstborn in the land of Egypt shall die, from the firstborn of the Pharaoh who sits on his throne, to the firstborn of the slave girl who is behind the millstones; all the firstborn of the cattle as well. 6 So there shall be ( G ) a great cry in all the land of Egypt, such as there has not been before and such as shall never be again. 7 ( H ) But not even a dog will [ c ] threaten any of the sons of Israel, nor anything from person to animal, so that you may [ d ] learn how the Lord distinguishes between Egypt and Israel.’ 8 And ( I ) all these servants of yours will come down to me and bow themselves [ e ] before me, saying, ‘Go out, you and all the people who [ f ] follow you,’ and after that I will go out.” ( J ) And he left Pharaoh in the heat of anger.
9 Then the Lord said to Moses, “ ( K ) Pharaoh will not listen to you, so ( L ) that My wonders will be multiplied in the land of Egypt.” 10 So ( M ) Moses and Aaron performed all these wonders before Pharaoh; yet ( N ) the Lord [ g ] hardened Pharaoh’s heart, and he did not let the sons of Israel go out of his land.
11 Now the Lord had said to Moses, “I will bring one more plague on Pharaoh and on Egypt. After that, he will let you go ( A ) from here, and when he does, he will drive you out completely. ( B ) 2 Tell the people that men and women alike are to ask their neighbors for articles of silver and gold.” ( C ) 3 (The Lord made the Egyptians favorably disposed ( D ) toward the people, and Moses himself was highly regarded ( E ) in Egypt by Pharaoh’s officials and by the people.)
4 So Moses said, “This is what the Lord says: ‘About midnight ( F ) I will go throughout Egypt. ( G ) 5 Every firstborn ( H ) son in Egypt will die, from the firstborn son of Pharaoh, who sits on the throne, to the firstborn son of the female slave, who is at her hand mill, ( I ) and all the firstborn of the cattle as well. 6 There will be loud wailing ( J ) throughout Egypt—worse than there has ever been or ever will be again. 7 But among the Israelites not a dog will bark at any person or animal.’ Then you will know that the Lord makes a distinction ( K ) between Egypt and Israel. 8 All these officials of yours will come to me, bowing down before me and saying, ‘Go, ( L ) you and all the people who follow you!’ After that I will leave.” ( M ) Then Moses, hot with anger, left Pharaoh.
9 The Lord had said to Moses, “Pharaoh will refuse to listen ( N ) to you—so that my wonders ( O ) may be multiplied in Egypt.” 10 Moses and Aaron performed all these wonders before Pharaoh, but the Lord hardened Pharaoh’s heart, ( P ) and he would not let the Israelites go out of his country.
