Haman dies

7 King Xerxes and Haman went to the meal that Queen Esther had prepared. 2 This was the second day that they ate a special meal together. While they were drinking wine, the king said to Esther, ‘Queen Esther, what do you want me to do for you? I will give you whatever you want. Even if you want half of my kingdom, I will give it to you.’

3 Queen Esther replied, ‘Sir, I hope that you are pleased with me. If you agree, I ask you to save my life. Also save the lives of my people. That is what I ask you to do. 4 Someone has sold me and my people as if we are animals. Now they will kill us and completely destroy us all. If we had been sold to become slaves, I would not have spoken to the king. It would not have been important enough for that.’

5 Then King Xerxes asked Queen Esther, ‘Who is this man? Who would even think of anything like that? Where is he?’

6 Esther replied, ‘The enemy of our people is this wicked man Haman!’

Then Haman became very afraid, as he sat there with the king and the queen. [ a ]

7 The king was very angry and he stood up. He left his wine and he went into the palace garden. Haman realized that the king wanted to destroy him. So he stayed with Queen Esther and he asked her to save his life. 8 Queen Esther was lying down on a bed. Haman threw himself down beside her. At that moment, the king returned from the garden. The king shouted, ‘What is this man doing? He even attacks the queen when she is with me in my palace!’ [ b ]

While the king was still saying this, his servants covered Haman's head. [ c ]

9 One of the king's eunuchs, Harbona, said, ‘There is a wooden tower near Haman's home. It is 22 metres high. His men built it so that he could hang Mordecai on it. Mordecai is the man who saved the king's life.’

The king said, ‘Hang Haman on the tower until he is dead.’

10 So they took Haman and they hanged him on the tower until he was dead. It was the same tower that Haman had wanted to kill Mordecai on. After that, the king did not feel so angry.

Footnotes

  1. 7:6 Haman now realized that Queen Esther was a Jew. He knew that the king would be very angry because of the law that Haman had written.
  2. 7:8 The king thought that Haman was trying to have sex with Queen Esther.
  3. 7:8 This meant that officers would kill Haman.

Haman Is Hanged

7 So the king and Haman went to eat with Queen Esther. 2 Then as they were drinking wine on the second day of the party, the king again asked Esther a question, “Queen Esther, what is it you want to ask for? Ask anything and it will be given to you. What do you want? I will give you anything, even half my kingdom.”

3 Then Queen Esther answered, “King, if you like me and it pleases you, please let me live. And I ask you to let my people live too. This is what I ask for. 4 I ask this because my people and I have been sold to be destroyed—to be killed and wiped out completely. If we had just been sold as slaves, I would have kept quiet, because that would not be enough of a problem to bother the king.”

5 Then King Xerxes asked Queen Esther, “Who did this to you? Where is the man who dared to do such a thing to your people?”

6 Esther said, “The man against us, our enemy, is this wicked Haman.”

Then Haman was filled with terror before the king and queen. 7 The king was very angry. He got up, left his wine, and went out into the garden. But Haman stayed inside to beg Queen Esther to save his life. He begged for his life because he knew that the king had already decided to kill him. 8 Just as the king was coming back in from the garden to the party room, he saw Haman falling on the couch where Esther was lying. The king said with anger in his voice, “Will you attack the queen even while I am in the house?”

As soon as the king had said this, servants came in and killed Haman. [ a ] 9 One of the eunuchs who served the king was named Harbona. He said, “A hanging post 75 feet [ b ] tall has been built near Haman’s house. Haman had it made so that he could hang Mordecai on it. Mordecai is the man who helped you when he told about the evil plans to kill you.”

The king said, “Hang Haman on that post!”

10 So they hanged Haman on the hanging post he had built for Mordecai. Then the king stopped being angry.

Footnotes

  1. Esther 7:8 killed Haman Literally, “covered Haman’s face.”
  2. Esther 7:9 75 feet Literally, “50 cubits” (22 m).

7 So the king and Haman came to banquet with Esther the queen.

2 And the king said again unto Esther on the second day at the banquet of wine, What is thy petition, queen Esther? and it shall be granted thee: and what is thy request? and it shall be performed, even to the half of the kingdom.

3 Then Esther the queen answered and said, If I have found favour in thy sight, O king, and if it please the king, let my life be given me at my petition, and my people at my request:

4 For we are sold, I and my people, to be destroyed, to be slain, and to perish. But if we had been sold for bondmen and bondwomen, I had held my tongue, although the enemy could not countervail the king's damage.

5 Then the king Ahasuerus answered and said unto Esther the queen, Who is he, and where is he, that durst presume in his heart to do so?

6 And Esther said, The adversary and enemy is this wicked Haman. Then Haman was afraid before the king and the queen.

7 And the king arising from the banquet of wine in his wrath went into the palace garden: and Haman stood up to make request for his life to Esther the queen; for he saw that there was evil determined against him by the king.

8 Then the king returned out of the palace garden into the place of the banquet of wine; and Haman was fallen upon the bed whereon Esther was. Then said the king, Will he force the queen also before me in the house? As the word went out of king's mouth, they covered Haman's face.

9 And Harbonah, one of the chamberlains, said before the king, Behold also, the gallows fifty cubits high, which Haman had made for Mordecai, who spoken good for the king, standeth in the house of Haman. Then the king said, Hang him thereon.

10 So they hanged Haman on the gallows that he had prepared for Mordecai. Then was the king's wrath pacified.

Esther’s Plea

7 Now the king and Haman came to drink wine with Esther the queen. 2 And the king said to Esther on the second day also [ a ] as they drank their wine at the banquet, “ ( A ) What is your request, Queen Esther? It shall be granted you. And what is your wish? ( B ) Up to half of the kingdom it shall be done.” 3 Then Queen Esther replied, “ ( C ) If I have found favor in your sight, O king, and if it pleases the king, let my life be given me as my request, and my people as my wish; 4 for ( D ) we have been sold, I and my people, to be destroyed, ( E ) killed, and eliminated. Now if we had only been sold as slaves, men and women, I would have kept silent, because the distress would not be sufficient reason to burden the king.” 5 Then King Ahasuerus [ b ] asked Queen Esther, “Who is he, and where is he, [ c ] who would presume to do such a thing ?” 6 And Esther said, “ ( F ) A foe and an enemy is this wicked Haman!” Then Haman became terrified before the king and queen.

Haman Is Hanged

7 The king then got up ( G ) in his anger from [ d ] drinking wine and went into ( H ) the palace garden; but Haman stayed to beg for his life from Queen Esther, for he saw that harm had been determined against him by the king. 8 Now when the king returned from the palace garden into the [ e ] place where they had been drinking wine, Haman was falling on ( I ) the couch where Esther was. Then the king said, “Will he even assault the queen with me in the house?” As the word went out of the king’s mouth, they covered Haman’s face. 9 Then Harbonah, one of the eunuchs who stood before the king, said, “Indeed, behold, ( J ) the wooden gallows standing at Haman’s house [ f ] fifty cubits high, which Haman made for Mordecai ( K ) who spoke good in behalf of the king!” And the king said, “Hang him on it.” 10 ( L ) So they hanged Haman on the wooden gallows which he had prepared for Mordecai, ( M ) and the king’s anger subsided.

Haman Impaled

7 So the king and Haman went to Queen Esther’s banquet, ( A ) 2 and as they were drinking wine ( B ) on the second day, the king again asked, “Queen Esther, what is your petition? It will be given you. What is your request? Even up to half the kingdom, ( C ) it will be granted. ( D )

3 Then Queen Esther answered, “If I have found favor ( E ) with you, Your Majesty, and if it pleases you, grant me my life—this is my petition. And spare my people—this is my request. 4 For I and my people have been sold to be destroyed, killed and annihilated. ( F ) If we had merely been sold as male and female slaves, I would have kept quiet, because no such distress would justify disturbing the king. [ a ]

5 King Xerxes asked Queen Esther, “Who is he? Where is he—the man who has dared to do such a thing?”

6 Esther said, “An adversary and enemy! This vile Haman!”

Then Haman was terrified before the king and queen. 7 The king got up in a rage, ( G ) left his wine and went out into the palace garden. ( H ) But Haman, realizing that the king had already decided his fate, ( I ) stayed behind to beg Queen Esther for his life.

8 Just as the king returned from the palace garden to the banquet hall, Haman was falling on the couch ( J ) where Esther was reclining. ( K )

The king exclaimed, “Will he even molest the queen while she is with me in the house?” ( L )

As soon as the word left the king’s mouth, they covered Haman’s face. ( M ) 9 Then Harbona, ( N ) one of the eunuchs attending the king, said, “A pole reaching to a height of fifty cubits [ b ] ( O ) stands by Haman’s house. He had it set up for Mordecai, who spoke up to help the king.”

The king said, “Impale him on it!” ( P ) 10 So they impaled ( Q ) Haman ( R ) on the pole ( S ) he had set up for Mordecai. ( T ) Then the king’s fury subsided. ( U )
