- Deuteronomy Chapter 5
5 Moses called all the Israelites to come together. He said to them:
Listen, Israelites, to the rules and commands that I am teaching to you today. Learn them. Be careful to obey them. 2 The Lord our God made a covenant with us at Sinai. 3 He did not make this agreement with our ancestors. He made it with all of us who are alive here today. 4 The Lord spoke clearly to you from the middle of the fire on the mountain. 5 (At that time, I stood between the Lord and you. I repeated the Lord 's message to you. You were afraid of the fire, so you did not go up the mountain.)
God said this:
6 ‘I am the Lord your God. I brought you out of Egypt, the country where you were slaves.
7 You must not have any other gods except me.
8 You must not make any idol for yourself. Do not make a false god in the shape of anything that is in the sky above. Do not make one in the shape of anything on the earth or in the sea. 9 You must not bend down your head to any idol or worship it. I am the Lord your God and I want you to belong to me alone. I will punish children because of the bad things that their fathers have done. I will also punish their grandchildren and their children too. That is how I will punish everyone who hates me. 10 But I will truly love all those who love me. They are the people who obey my laws. I will continue to love them and their families for ever.
11 You must not speak the name of the Lord your God in a wrong way. The Lord will punish anyone who speaks his name in a wrong way.
12 Always make the Sabbath day a special day for God, as the Lord your God has commanded you. 13 You have six days every week to do all your work. 14 But the seventh day is a Sabbath day. It is special for the Lord your God. You must not do any work on that day. Your son and your daughter must not work on that day. Your servants, male or female, must not work on that day. Your ox or your donkey or any of your animals must not work on that day, nor any foreign person who lives among you. Then your servants can rest in the same way as you rest. 15 You must remember that you were slaves in Egypt. But I, the Lord your God, brought you out by my powerful authority. So the Lord your God has told you to make the Sabbath day a special day.
16 Always respect your father and your mother, as the Lord your God has commanded you. Then you will live for many years in the land that the Lord your God will give to you. And you will be happy.
17 You must not murder anyone.
18 You must not have sex with another person's wife or husband.
19 You must not take another person's things for yourself.
20 You must not say false things against your neighbour.
21 You must not want to take your neighbour's wife for yourself. You must not want his house or his land, or his servants, male or female. You must not want his ox or his donkey or anything else that belongs to your neighbour.’
22 These are the commands that the Lord spoke to you. You were all there together at the mountain. He spoke with a loud voice from the middle of a great fire. There was a cloud and it was very dark. He gave only those commands. Then he wrote them on two flat stones and he gave them to me.
23 The mountain was burning with fire and you heard God's voice speak from the darkness. Then the leaders and older men of your tribes came to speak to me. 24 They said, ‘The Lord our God has shown us how great and how powerful he is. We have heard his voice from the middle of the fire. We have learned this: People can continue to live, even after God has spoken to them. 25 But now we think that this great fire will kill us. We do not want to die! If we continue to hear the voice of the Lord our God, we will surely die. 26 The God who lives for ever has spoken to us from the middle of the fire. Has anyone ever heard him speak like that and then continued to live? 27 We ask you to go near to the Lord our God. Listen to everything that he says. Then you should tell us what he says to you. We will listen carefully and we will obey him.’
28 The Lord heard what you said to me. He said to me, ‘I have heard what these people have said to you. What they said is right. 29 I really want them to respect me with fear. I want them to obey my commands in the future! If they do that, everything will be well for them and for their descendants for ever. 30 Now tell them to return to their tents. 31 But you should stay here with me. I will tell you all the commands, rules and laws that you must teach to the people. Then they can obey them in the land that I will give them to live in.’
32 So you must be careful to do everything that the Lord your God has commanded you to do. You must not refuse to obey any of his laws. 33 Live in the way that he has commanded you. If you do that, you will be happy in the land where you are going. You will live for a long time in the land that will be your home.
5 Moses called together all the Israelites and said to them, “Israelites, listen to the laws and rules that I tell you today. Learn these laws and be sure to obey them. 2 The Lord our God made an agreement with us at Mount Horeb. 3 The Lord did not make this agreement with our ancestors, but with us—yes, with all of us who are alive here today. 4 The Lord spoke with you face to face at that mountain. He spoke to you from the fire. 5 But you were afraid of the fire. And you did not go up the mountain. So I stood between you and the Lord to tell you what the Lord said. He said,
6 ‘I am the Lord your God. I am the one who freed you from Egypt, where you were slaves.
7 ‘You must not worship any other gods except me.
8 ‘You must not make any idols. Don’t make any statues or pictures of anything up in the sky or of anything on the earth or of anything down in the water. 9 Don’t worship or serve idols of any kind, because I am the Lord your God. I hate for my people to worship other gods. [ a ] People who sin against me become my enemies. And I will punish them, and their children, their grandchildren, and even their great-grandchildren. 10 But I will be very kind to people who love me and obey my commands. I will be kind to their families for thousands of generations! [ b ]
11 ‘You must not use the name of the Lord your God to make empty promises. If you do, the Lord will not let you go unpunished.
12 ‘You must keep the Sabbath a special day like the Lord your God commanded. 13 Work six days a week and do your job, 14 but the seventh day is a day of rest in honor of the Lord your God. So on that day no one should work—not you, your sons and daughters, foreigners living in your cities or your men and women slaves. Not even your cattle, donkeys, and other animals should do any work! Your slaves should be able to rest just as you do. 15 Don’t forget that you were slaves in the land of Egypt. The Lord your God brought you out of Egypt with his great power and made you free. That is why the Lord your God commands you to always make the Sabbath a special day.
16 ‘You must honor your father and your mother. The Lord your God has commanded you to do this. If you follow this command, you will live a long time, and everything will go well for you in the land that the Lord your God gives you.
17 ‘You must not murder anyone.
18 ‘You must not commit the sin of adultery.
19 ‘You must not steal.
20 ‘You must not tell lies about other people. [ c ]
21 ‘You must not want another man’s wife. You must not want his house, his fields, his men and women servants, his cattle, or his donkeys. You must not want to take anything that belongs to another person.’”
22 Moses said, “The Lord gave these commands to all of you when you were together there at the mountain. He spoke in a loud voice that came from the fire, the cloud, and the thick darkness. After he gave us these commands, he didn’t say any more. He wrote his words on two stone tablets and gave them to me.
23 “You heard the voice from the darkness while the mountain was burning with fire. Then all the elders and the other leaders of your tribes came to me. 24 They said, ‘The Lord our God has shown us his Glory and his greatness! We heard him speak from the fire. We have seen today that it is possible to continue living even after God speaks to us. 25 But if we hear the Lord our God speak to us again, surely we will die! That terrible fire will destroy us. We don’t want to die. 26 No one has ever heard the living God speak from the fire like we have and still lived! 27 Moses, you go near and hear everything the Lord our God says. Then tell us everything the Lord tells you. We will listen to you, and we will do everything you say.’
28 “The Lord heard what you said and told me, ‘I heard what the people said. And that is fine. 29 I only wanted to change their way of thinking—I wanted them to respect me and obey all my commands from the heart. Then everything would be fine with them and with their descendants forever.
30 “‘Go and tell the people to go back to their tents, 31 but you stand here near me. I will tell you all the commands, laws, and rules that you must teach them. They must do these things in the land that I am giving them to live in.’
32 “So you people must be careful to do everything the Lord commanded you. Do not stop following God! 33 You must live the way the Lord your God commanded you. Then you will continue to live, and everything will be fine with you. You will live a long life in the land that will belong to you.
5 And Moses called all Israel, and said unto them, Hear, O Israel, the statutes and judgments which I speak in your ears this day, that ye may learn them, and keep, and do them.
2 The Lord our God made a covenant with us in Horeb.
3 The Lord made not this covenant with our fathers, but with us, even us, who are all of us here alive this day.
4 The Lord talked with you face to face in the mount out of the midst of the fire,
5 (I stood between the Lord and you at that time, to shew you the word of the Lord : for ye were afraid by reason of the fire, and went not up into the mount;) saying,
6 I am the Lord thy God, which brought thee out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage.
7 Thou shalt have none other gods before me.
8 Thou shalt not make thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the waters beneath the earth:
9 Thou shalt not bow down thyself unto them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me,
10 And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me and keep my commandments.
11 Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain: for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.
12 Keep the sabbath day to sanctify it, as the Lord thy God hath commanded thee.
13 Six days thou shalt labour, and do all thy work:
14 But the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, nor thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thine ox, nor thine ass, nor any of thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates; that thy manservant and thy maidservant may rest as well as thou.
15 And remember that thou wast a servant in the land of Egypt, and that the Lord thy God brought thee out thence through a mighty hand and by a stretched out arm: therefore the Lord thy God commanded thee to keep the sabbath day.
16 Honour thy father and thy mother, as the Lord thy God hath commanded thee; that thy days may be prolonged, and that it may go well with thee, in the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.
17 Thou shalt not kill.
18 Neither shalt thou commit adultery.
19 Neither shalt thou steal.
20 Neither shalt thou bear false witness against thy neighbour.
21 Neither shalt thou desire thy neighbour's wife, neither shalt thou covet thy neighbour's house, his field, or his manservant, or his maidservant, his ox, or his ass, or any thing that is thy neighbour's.
22 These words the Lord spake unto all your assembly in the mount out of the midst of the fire, of the cloud, and of the thick darkness, with a great voice: and he added no more. And he wrote them in two tables of stone, and delivered them unto me.
23 And it came to pass, when ye heard the voice out of the midst of the darkness, (for the mountain did burn with fire,) that ye came near unto me, even all the heads of your tribes, and your elders;
24 And ye said, Behold, the Lord our God hath shewed us his glory and his greatness, and we have heard his voice out of the midst of the fire: we have seen this day that God doth talk with man, and he liveth.
25 Now therefore why should we die? for this great fire will consume us: if we hear the voice of the Lord our God any more, then we shall die.
26 For who is there of all flesh, that hath heard the voice of the living God speaking out of the midst of the fire, as we have, and lived?
27 Go thou near, and hear all that the Lord our God shall say: and speak thou unto us all that the Lord our God shall speak unto thee; and we will hear it, and do it.
28 And the Lord heard the voice of your words, when ye spake unto me; and the Lord said unto me, I have heard the voice of the words of this people, which they have spoken unto thee: they have well said all that they have spoken.
29 O that there were such an heart in them, that they would fear me, and keep all my commandments always, that it might be well with them, and with their children for ever!
30 Go say to them, Get you into your tents again.
31 But as for thee, stand thou here by me, and I will speak unto thee all the commandments, and the statutes, and the judgments, which thou shalt teach them, that they may do them in the land which I give them to possess it.
32 Ye shall observe to do therefore as the Lord your God hath commanded you: ye shall not turn aside to the right hand or to the left.
33 Ye shall walk in all the ways which the Lord your God hath commanded you, that ye may live, and that it may be well with you, and that ye may prolong your days in the land which ye shall possess.
5 Now Moses summoned all Israel and said to them:
“Listen, Israel, to the statutes and ordinances which I am speaking today [ a ] for you to hear, so that you may learn them and be careful to do them. 2 The Lord our God made ( A ) a covenant with us at Horeb. 3 ( B ) The Lord did not make this covenant with our fathers, but with us, all [ b ] of us who are alive here today. 4 The Lord spoke with you ( C ) face to face at the mountain ( D ) from the midst of the fire, 5 while ( E ) I was standing between the Lord and you at that time, to declare to you the word of the Lord ; ( F ) for you were afraid because of the fire, and you did not go up on the mountain. [ c ] He said,
6 ‘ ( G ) I am the Lord your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of [ d ] slavery.
7 ‘ ( H ) You shall have no other gods besides Me.
8 ‘ ( I ) You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any [ e ] likeness of what is in heaven above [ f ] or on the earth beneath [ g ] or in the water under the earth. 9 You shall not worship them nor serve them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, ( J ) inflicting the [ h ] punishment of the fathers on the children, [ i ] even on the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me, 10 but ( K ) showing [ j ] favor to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.
11 ‘ ( L ) You shall not take the name of the Lord your God [ k ] in vain, for the Lord will not [ l ] leave unpunished the one who takes His name in vain.
12 ‘ ( M ) Keep the Sabbath day to treat it as holy, as the Lord your God commanded you. 13 For six days you [ m ] shall labor and do all your work, 14 but ( N ) the seventh day is a Sabbath of the Lord your God; you shall not do any work that day , you or your son or your daughter, or your male slave or your female slave, or your ox, your donkey, or any of your cattle, or your [ n ] resident who [ o ] stays with you, so that your male slave and your female slave may rest as well as you. 15 ( O ) And you shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the Lord your God brought you out of there by a mighty hand and an outstretched arm; therefore the Lord your God commanded you to [ p ] celebrate the Sabbath day.
16 ‘ ( P ) Honor your father and your mother, just as the Lord your God has commanded you, ( Q ) so that your days may be prolonged and that it may go well for you on the land which the Lord your God is giving you.
17 ‘ ( R ) You shall not murder.
18 ‘ ( S ) You shall not commit adultery.
19 ‘ ( T ) You shall not steal.
20 ‘ ( U ) You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.
21 ‘ ( V ) You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, nor desire your neighbor’s house, his field, his male slave or his female slave, his ox, his donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.’
22 “These words the Lord spoke to your whole assembly at the mountain from the midst of the fire, from the cloud, and from the thick darkness, with a great voice, and He added nothing more. ( W ) He wrote them on two tablets of stone and gave them to me. 23 And when you heard the voice from the midst of the darkness, while the mountain was burning with fire, you approached me, all the heads of your tribes and your elders. 24 You said, ‘Behold, the Lord our God has shown us His glory and His greatness, and we have heard His voice from the midst of the fire; we have seen today that God speaks with mankind, yet he lives. 25 ( X ) Now then, why should we die? For this great fire will consume us; if we hear the voice of the Lord our God any longer, then we will die! 26 For ( Y ) who is there of [ q ] humanity who has heard the voice of the living God speaking from the midst of the fire, as we have , and lived? 27 [ r ] Go near and listen to everything that the Lord our God says; then speak to us everything that the Lord our God speaks to you, and we will listen and do it .’
28 “Now the Lord heard the sound of your words when you spoke to me, ( Z ) and the Lord said to me, ‘I have heard the sound of the words of this people which they have spoken to you. They have done well in all that they have spoken. 29 ( AA ) If only they had such a heart in them, to fear Me and ( AB ) keep all My commandments always, so that ( AC ) it would go well with them and with their sons forever! 30 Go, say to them, “Return to your tents.” 31 ( AD ) But as for you, stand here by Me, that I may speak to you all the commandments, the statutes, and the judgments which you shall teach them, so that they may [ s ] follow them in the land which I am giving them to possess.’ 32 So you shall be careful to do just as the Lord your God has commanded you; ( AE ) you shall not turn aside to the right or to the left. 33 ( AF ) You shall walk [ t ] entirely in the way which the Lord your God has commanded you, ( AG ) so that you may live and that it may be well for you, and that you may prolong your days in the land which you will possess.
5 Moses summoned all Israel and said:
Hear, Israel, the decrees and laws ( B ) I declare in your hearing today. Learn them and be sure to follow them. 2 The Lord our God made a covenant ( C ) with us at Horeb. ( D ) 3 It was not with our ancestors [ a ] that the Lord made this covenant, but with us, ( E ) with all of us who are alive here today. ( F ) 4 The Lord spoke ( G ) to you face to face ( H ) out of the fire ( I ) on the mountain. 5 (At that time I stood between ( J ) the Lord and you to declare to you the word of the Lord , because you were afraid ( K ) of the fire and did not go up the mountain.) And he said:
6 “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, ( L ) out of the land of slavery. ( M )
7 “You shall have no other gods before [ b ] me.
8 “You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. ( N ) 9 You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents ( O ) to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, ( P ) 10 but showing love to a thousand ( Q ) generations of those who love me and keep my commandments. ( R )
11 “You shall not misuse the name ( S ) of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name. ( T )
12 “Observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy, ( U ) as the Lord your God has commanded you. 13 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 14 but the seventh day ( V ) is a sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, ( W ) nor your ox, your donkey or any of your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns, so that your male and female servants may rest, as you do. ( X ) 15 Remember that you were slaves ( Y ) in Egypt and that the Lord your God brought you out of there with a mighty hand ( Z ) and an outstretched arm. ( AA ) Therefore the Lord your God has commanded you to observe the Sabbath day.
16 “Honor your father ( AB ) and your mother, ( AC ) as the Lord your God has commanded you, so that you may live long ( AD ) and that it may go well with you in the land the Lord your God is giving you.
17 “You shall not murder. ( AE )
18 “You shall not commit adultery. ( AF )
19 “You shall not steal. ( AG )
20 “You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor. ( AH )
21 “You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife. You shall not set your desire on your neighbor’s house or land, his male or female servant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.” ( AI )
22 These are the commandments the Lord proclaimed in a loud voice to your whole assembly there on the mountain from out of the fire, the cloud and the deep darkness; ( AJ ) and he added nothing more. Then he wrote them on two stone tablets ( AK ) and gave them to me.
23 When you heard the voice out of the darkness, while the mountain was ablaze with fire, all the leaders of your tribes and your elders ( AL ) came to me. 24 And you said, “The Lord our God has shown us ( AM ) his glory and his majesty, ( AN ) and we have heard his voice from the fire. Today we have seen that a person can live even if God speaks with them. ( AO ) 25 But now, why should we die? This great fire will consume us, and we will die if we hear the voice of the Lord our God any longer. ( AP ) 26 For what mortal has ever heard the voice of the living God speaking out of fire, as we have, and survived? ( AQ ) 27 Go near and listen to all that the Lord our God says. ( AR ) Then tell us whatever the Lord our God tells you. We will listen and obey.” ( AS )
28 The Lord heard you when you spoke to me, and the Lord said to me, “I have heard what this people said to you. Everything they said was good. ( AT ) 29 Oh, that their hearts would be inclined to fear me ( AU ) and keep all my commands ( AV ) always, so that it might go well with them and their children forever! ( AW )
30 “Go, tell them to return to their tents. 31 But you stay here ( AX ) with me so that I may give you all the commands, decrees and laws you are to teach them to follow in the land I am giving them to possess.”
32 So be careful to do what the Lord your God has commanded you; ( AY ) do not turn aside to the right or to the left. ( AZ ) 33 Walk in obedience to all that the Lord your God has commanded you, ( BA ) so that you may live and prosper and prolong your days ( BB ) in the land that you will possess.
