- Deuteronomy Chapter 10
10 At that time, the Lord said to me, ‘Cut out two new flat stones that are like the first stones. Then bring them up to me, on the mountain. You must also use some wood to make a big box. 2 I will write on the new stones the same words that I wrote on the first stones. You broke those stones. But you must put the new stones into the wooden box.’
3 So I used acacia wood to make a box. I also cut two new flat stones that were like the first stones. Then I carried the two new stones up the mountain in my hands. 4 The Lord wrote on the stones the same words that he had written before. Those were the ten special commands that he had told you before. He spoke those commands from the middle of the fire on the mountain, when you came together there. Then the Lord gave the stones to me. 5 I came down from the mountain. I put the stones into the box that I had made, as the Lord had told me to do. The stones are still there now.
6 (At that time, the Israelites travelled to Moserah from the wells that belonged to Jaakan's descendants. Aaron died there and they buried him. His son Eleazar became priest instead. 7 Then they travelled to Gudgodah. From there they travelled to Jotbathah, a place where there are many streams of water. 8 At that time, the Lord chose the tribe of Levi to carry the Lord 's Covenant Box. He chose them to be his special servants. They had to pray for the Lord to bless his people. They still do these things today. 9 That is why the Levites did not receive any land for themselves, as the other tribes did. The Lord himself would give them everything that they needed, as he had promised.)
10 I stayed on the mountain for 40 days and nights, as I did the first time. The Lord listened to my prayer. He decided that he would not destroy you. 11 Then the Lord said to me, ‘Go now! Lead the people on their journey. Then they can go into the land and take it for themselves. It is the land that I promised to their ancestors that I would give to them.’
12 So, people of Israel, this is what the Lord your God wants you to do: You should respect him with fear. You should live in a way that pleases him. Love him and serve him in everything that you think and in everything that you do. 13 Obey the Lord 's commands and rules that I am giving to you today. If you do these things, you will have a happy life.
14 The whole sky and the highest heavens belong to the Lord your God. The earth and everything that is in it also belong to him. 15 But the Lord chose to love your ancestors with a faithful love. You are their descendants. He has chosen you from among all the people of the world. You can see that this is true today!
16 So remember that you belong to the Lord . Live to please him! Do not refuse to obey him. 17 For the Lord your God rules all other gods. He is the Lord over all other lords. He is great and powerful. We should respect him and obey him. He is fair to everyone. He will not accept any bribes! 18 He brings justice to widows and to children who have no family. He loves the foreign people who live among you. He gives them food to eat and clothes to wear. 19 You too must love the foreign people who live among you. Remember that you also lived as foreigners in Egypt at one time.
20 Respect and obey the Lord your God. Serve him faithfully. If you make a promise, only use his name to do that. 21 He is the one that you should praise. He is the God that you worship. He has done great and powerful things to help you, and you saw him do them. 22 When your ancestors went to Egypt, they were only 70 people. Now the Lord your God has caused you to become very many people. You are as many as the stars in the sky! [ a ]
10 “At that time the Lord said to me, ‘You must cut out two stone tablets like the first two stones. Then you must come up to me on the mountain. Also make a wooden box. 2 I will write on the stone tablets the same words that were on the first stones—the stones you broke. Then you must put these new stones in the Box.’
3 “So I made a box from acacia wood. I cut two stone tablets like the first two stones. Then I went up on the mountain. I had the two stone tablets in my hand. 4 And the Lord wrote on the stones the same words he had written before—the Ten Commandments he spoke to you from the fire, when you were gathered together at the mountain. Then the Lord gave the two stone tablets to me. 5 I came back down from the mountain. I put the stones in the Box I had made. The Lord commanded me to put them there. And the stones are still there in that Box.”
6 (The Israelites traveled from the wells of the people of Jaakan to Moserah. There Aaron died and was buried. Aaron’s son Eleazar served in Aaron’s place as priest. 7 Then the Israelites went from Moserah to Gudgodah. And they went from Gudgodah to Jotbathah, a land of rivers. 8 At that time the Lord separated the tribe of Levi from the other tribes for his special work. They had the work of carrying the Lord ’s Box of the Agreement. They also served as priests before the Lord . And they had the work of blessing people in the Lord ’s name. They still do this special work today. 9 That is why the people from the tribe of Levi did not get any share of land like the other tribes did. They have the Lord for their share. That is what the Lord your God promised them.)
10 “I stayed on the mountain 40 days and 40 nights, like the first time. The Lord also listened to me at that time. He decided not to destroy you. 11 The Lord said to me, ‘Go and lead the people on their trip. They will go in and live in the land that I promised to give to their ancestors.’
12 “Now, Israelites, listen! What does the Lord your God really want from you? The Lord your God wants you to respect him and do what he says. He wants you to love him and to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul. 13 So obey the laws and commands of the Lord that I am giving you today. These laws and commands are for your own good.
14 “Everything belongs to the Lord your God. The heavens, even the highest heavens, belong to him. The earth and everything on it belong to him. 15 The Lord loved your ancestors very much. He loved them so much that he chose you, their descendants, to be his people. He chose you instead of any other nation, and you are still his chosen people today.
16 “Stop being stubborn. Give your hearts to God. 17 The Lord is your God. He is the God of gods and the Lord of lords. He is the great God. He is the amazing and powerful fighter. To him everyone is the same. He does not accept money to change his mind. 18 He defends widows and orphans. He loves even the strangers living among us. He gives them food and clothes. 19 So you must also love them, because you yourselves were strangers in the land of Egypt.
20 “You must respect the Lord your God and worship only him. Never leave him. When you make promises, you must use his name only. 21 He is the one you should praise. He is your God. He has done great and amazing things for you. You have seen them with your own eyes. 22 When your ancestors went down into Egypt, there were only 70 people. Now the Lord your God has made you as many as the stars in the sky.
10 At that time the Lord said unto me, Hew thee two tables of stone like unto the first, and come up unto me into the mount, and make thee an ark of wood.
2 And I will write on the tables the words that were in the first tables which thou brakest, and thou shalt put them in the ark.
3 And I made an ark of shittim wood, and hewed two tables of stone like unto the first, and went up into the mount, having the two tables in mine hand.
4 And he wrote on the tables, according to the first writing, the ten commandments, which the Lord spake unto you in the mount out of the midst of the fire in the day of the assembly: and the Lord gave them unto me.
5 And I turned myself and came down from the mount, and put the tables in the ark which I had made; and there they be, as the Lord commanded me.
6 And the children of Israel took their journey from Beeroth of the children of Jaakan to Mosera: there Aaron died, and there he was buried; and Eleazar his son ministered in the priest's office in his stead.
7 From thence they journeyed unto Gudgodah; and from Gudgodah to Jotbath, a land of rivers of waters.
8 At that time the Lord separated the tribe of Levi, to bear the ark of the covenant of the Lord , to stand before the Lord to minister unto him, and to bless in his name, unto this day.
9 Wherefore Levi hath no part nor inheritance with his brethren; the Lord is his inheritance, according as the Lord thy God promised him.
10 And I stayed in the mount, according to the first time, forty days and forty nights; and the Lord hearkened unto me at that time also, and the Lord would not destroy thee.
11 And the Lord said unto me, Arise, take thy journey before the people, that they may go in and possess the land, which I sware unto their fathers to give unto them.
12 And now, Israel, what doth the Lord thy God require of thee, but to fear the Lord thy God, to walk in all his ways, and to love him, and to serve the Lord thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul,
13 To keep the commandments of the Lord , and his statutes, which I command thee this day for thy good?
14 Behold, the heaven and the heaven of heavens is the Lord 's thy God, the earth also, with all that therein is.
15 Only the Lord had a delight in thy fathers to love them, and he chose their seed after them, even you above all people, as it is this day.
16 Circumcise therefore the foreskin of your heart, and be no more stiffnecked.
17 For the Lord your God is God of gods, and Lord of lords, a great God, a mighty, and a terrible, which regardeth not persons, nor taketh reward:
18 He doth execute the judgment of the fatherless and widow, and loveth the stranger, in giving him food and raiment.
19 Love ye therefore the stranger: for ye were strangers in the land of Egypt.
20 Thou shalt fear the Lord thy God; him shalt thou serve, and to him shalt thou cleave, and swear by his name.
21 He is thy praise, and he is thy God, that hath done for thee these great and terrible things, which thine eyes have seen.
22 Thy fathers went down into Egypt with threescore and ten persons; and now the Lord thy God hath made thee as the stars of heaven for multitude.
10 “At that time the Lord said to me, ‘ ( A ) Cut out for yourself two tablets of stone like the first two , and come up to Me on the mountain, and ( B ) make an [ a ] ark of wood for yourself. 2 Then ( C ) I will write on the tablets the words that were on the first tablets which you smashed to pieces, and ( D ) you shall put them in the ark.’ 3 So ( E ) I made an ark of acacia wood and ( F ) cut out two tablets of stone like the first two , and I went up on the mountain with the two tablets in my hand. 4 Then He wrote on the tablets, like the first writing, ( G ) the Ten [ b ] Commandments ( H ) which the Lord had spoken to you on the mountain from the midst of the fire ( I ) on the day of the assembly; and the Lord gave them to me. 5 Then I turned and ( J ) came down from the mountain, and I ( K ) put the tablets in the ark which I had made; ( L ) and they are there, just as the Lord commanded me.”
6 (Now the sons of Israel set out from [ c ] Beeroth ( M ) Bene-jaakan to Moserah. ( N ) There Aaron died and there he was buried, and his son Eleazar served as priest in his place. 7 ( O ) From there they set out to Gudgodah, and from Gudgodah to Jotbathah, a land of streams of water. 8 ( P ) At that time the Lord singled out the tribe of Levi to carry the ark of the covenant of the Lord , to stand before the Lord ( Q ) to serve Him and to bless in His name, until this day. 9 ( R ) Therefore, Levi does not have a portion or inheritance with his brothers; the Lord is his inheritance, just as the Lord your God spoke to him.)
10 “ ( S ) I, moreover, stayed on the mountain for forty days and forty nights like the first time, and the Lord listened to me that time also; the Lord was not willing to destroy you. 11 Then the Lord said to me, ‘Arise, proceed on your journey ahead of the people, so that they may go in and take possession of the land which I swore to their fathers to give them.’
12 “ ( T ) And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God require of you, but to [ d ] fear the Lord your God, to walk in all His ways and ( U ) love Him, and to serve the Lord your God with ( V ) all your heart and with all your soul, 13 and to keep the Lord ’ s commandments and His statutes which I am commanding you today for your good? 14 Behold, ( W ) to the Lord your God belong heaven and the [ e ] highest heavens, ( X ) the earth and all that is in it. 15 ( Y ) Yet the Lord set His affection on your fathers, to love them, and He chose their [ f ] descendants after them, you over all the other peoples, as it is this day. 16 ( Z ) So circumcise [ g ] your heart, and do not ( AA ) stiffen your neck any longer. 17 ( AB ) For the Lord your God is the God of gods and the ( AC ) Lord of lords, the great, the mighty, and the awesome God, ( AD ) who does not show partiality, nor ( AE ) take a bribe. 18 He executes justice for ( AF ) the orphan and the widow, and shows His love for the stranger by giving him food and clothing. 19 ( AG ) So show your love for the stranger, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt. 20 You shall fear the Lord your God; you shall serve Him, and ( AH ) cling to Him, and ( AI ) you shall swear by His name. 21 He is ( AJ ) your glory and He is your God, who has done these great and awesome things for you which your eyes have seen. 22 ( AK ) Your fathers went down to Egypt seventy persons in all , ( AL ) and now the Lord your God has made you as numerous as the stars of heaven.
10 At that time the Lord said to me, “Chisel out two stone tablets ( A ) like the first ones and come up to me on the mountain. Also make a wooden ark. [ a ] 2 I will write on the tablets the words that were on the first tablets, which you broke. Then you are to put them in the ark.” ( B )
3 So I made the ark out of acacia wood ( C ) and chiseled ( D ) out two stone tablets like the first ones, and I went up on the mountain with the two tablets in my hands. 4 The Lord wrote on these tablets what he had written before, the Ten Commandments ( E ) he had proclaimed ( F ) to you on the mountain, out of the fire, on the day of the assembly. ( G ) And the Lord gave them to me. 5 Then I came back down the mountain ( H ) and put the tablets in the ark ( I ) I had made, ( J ) as the Lord commanded me, and they are there now. ( K )
6 (The Israelites traveled from the wells of Bene Jaakan to Moserah. ( L ) There Aaron died ( M ) and was buried, and Eleazar ( N ) his son succeeded him as priest. ( O ) 7 From there they traveled to Gudgodah and on to Jotbathah, a land with streams of water. ( P ) 8 At that time the Lord set apart the tribe of Levi ( Q ) to carry the ark of the covenant ( R ) of the Lord , to stand before the Lord to minister ( S ) and to pronounce blessings ( T ) in his name, as they still do today. ( U ) 9 That is why the Levites have no share or inheritance among their fellow Israelites; the Lord is their inheritance, ( V ) as the Lord your God told them.)
10 Now I had stayed on the mountain forty days and forty nights, as I did the first time, and the Lord listened to me at this time also. It was not his will to destroy you. ( W ) 11 “Go,” the Lord said to me, “and lead the people on their way, so that they may enter and possess the land I swore to their ancestors to give them.”
12 And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God ask of you ( X ) but to fear ( Y ) the Lord your God, to walk ( Z ) in obedience to him, to love him, ( AA ) to serve the Lord ( AB ) your God with all your heart ( AC ) and with all your soul, ( AD ) 13 and to observe the Lord ’s commands ( AE ) and decrees that I am giving you today for your own good? ( AF )
14 To the Lord your God belong the heavens, ( AG ) even the highest heavens, ( AH ) the earth and everything in it. ( AI ) 15 Yet the Lord set his affection on your ancestors and loved ( AJ ) them, and he chose you, ( AK ) their descendants, above all the nations—as it is today. ( AL ) 16 Circumcise ( AM ) your hearts, ( AN ) therefore, and do not be stiff-necked ( AO ) any longer. 17 For the Lord your God is God of gods ( AP ) and Lord of lords, ( AQ ) the great God, mighty and awesome, ( AR ) who shows no partiality ( AS ) and accepts no bribes. ( AT ) 18 He defends the cause of the fatherless and the widow, ( AU ) and loves the foreigner residing among you, giving them food and clothing. ( AV ) 19 And you are to love ( AW ) those who are foreigners, ( AX ) for you yourselves were foreigners in Egypt. ( AY ) 20 Fear the Lord your God and serve him. ( AZ ) Hold fast ( BA ) to him and take your oaths in his name. ( BB ) 21 He is the one you praise; ( BC ) he is your God, who performed for you those great ( BD ) and awesome wonders ( BE ) you saw with your own eyes. 22 Your ancestors who went down into Egypt were seventy in all, ( BF ) and now the Lord your God has made you as numerous as the stars in the sky.
