The Lord is powerful

9 Then I saw a vision of the Lord. He was standing beside the altar in the temple. The Lord said, ‘Hit the tops of the pillars so that the whole foundation shakes! Cause the building to fall on the heads of all the people. If anyone is still alive after that, I will cause them to die in battle. Nobody will escape! 2 They might try to dig deep into the earth to save themselves. But my strong hand will pull them out of there. They might climb up into the sky. But I will pull them down from there. 3 They might try to hide on the top of Mount Carmel. But I will find them and I will take them from there. They might try to hide from me deep down in the sea. But I will command the great sea snake to bite them. 4 Even when their enemies take them away as prisoners, I will cause them to die in battle. I have decided to destroy them. I will not help them.’

5 The Lord God Almighty will do this! When he touches the earth, it shakes. Everyone who lives there weeps. The ground rises up, like the water of the Nile river in Egypt. Then it goes down again, like the river. 6 The Lord builds his palace up into heaven, with its foundation on the earth. He takes up the water from the sea, and he pours it out on the earth as rain. The Lord is his name.

7 The Lord says, ‘You Israelite people, do not think that you are more important to me than the people of Ethiopia. It is true that I led you safely out of Egypt. But I also brought the Philistines from Crete. And I brought the Aramean people from Kir. 8 I, the Lord God, am carefully watching you Israelites. I see that you are a wicked nation, so I will remove you from the earth. But I will not completely destroy all the descendants of Jacob.’ That is what the Lord says.

9 ‘Listen to me! I will cause trouble to come to Israel's family, as they live among other nations. It will be like a person who shakes a sieve to remove dirt from grain. 10 Those among my people who do bad things will die. They say, “God will not send trouble to us. Nothing bad will happen to us.” But their enemies will kill those bad people in war.’

The Israelites will be strong again

11 The Lord says, ‘When that time comes, I will make David's kingdom strong again. It has become like a broken hut, but I will repair it. I will cause it to become as good and strong as it was when king David ruled. 12 You Israelites will fight the Edomites who still remain. You will win against them and the other nations that once belonged to me.’

That is what the Lord says, and he will do it.

13 The Lord says, ‘The time will come when food will grow very well in your fields. People will need to work quickly to cut down all their crops before they plough the ground to plant again. Lots of grapes will grow on your vines. People will work quickly to make wine from the grapes before they plant new vines. So much juice will pour out of the grapes that it will run down the hills!

14 I will bring the people of Israel, my people, back to their own land. Enemies destroyed their cities, but now my people will build them again. They will live safely in them. My people will plant vines. They will drink wine from their grapes. They will eat the fruit from trees that they have planted in their gardens. 15 And I will plant my people in their own land. That is the land that I have given to them, and nobody will ever pull them out of that land.’

That is what the Lord your God says.

Vision of the Lord Standing by the Altar

9 I saw the Lord standing by the altar, and he said,

“Hit the top of the columns,
and shake them to the ground.
Push them and they will fall
on everyone’s head.
As for those who survive,
I will kill them with a sword.
None of them will run away.
None of them will escape.
2 If they dig deep into the ground, [ a ]
I will pull them from there.
If they go up into the skies, [ b ]
I will bring them down from there.
3 If they hide at the top of Mount Carmel, [ c ]
I will find them there and take them from that place.
If they try to hide from me at the bottom of the sea,
I will command the snake, and it will bite them.
4 If they are captured and taken away by their enemies,
I will command the sword,
and it will kill them there.
Yes, I will watch over them,
but I will watch for ways to give them troubles,
not for ways to do good things.”

Punishment Will Destroy the People

5 The Lord God All-Powerful will touch the land,
and the land will melt.
Then all the people who live in the land will cry for the dead.
The land will rise and fall
like the Nile River in Egypt.
6 He built his upper rooms above the skies.
He put his skies [ d ] over the earth.
He calls for the waters of the sea
and pours them out as rain on the land.
Yahweh is his name.

The Lord Promises Destruction for Israel

7 This is what the Lord says:

“Israel, you are like the Ethiopians to me.
I brought Israel out of the land of Egypt,
the Philistines from Caphtor, [ e ]
and the Arameans from Kir. [ f ]

8 The Lord God is watching this sinful kingdom.
The Lord says,
“I will wipe Israel off the face of the earth,
but I will never completely destroy Jacob’s family.
9 I am giving the command
to scatter the people of Israel among all nations.
But it will be like someone sifting flour.
A person shakes flour through a sifter. [ g ]
The good flour falls through, but the bad lumps are caught.

10 “Sinners among my people say,
‘Nothing bad will happen to us.’
But all of them will be killed with swords.”

God Promises to Restore the Kingdom

11 “David’s tent [ h ] has fallen,
but at that time I will set it up again.
I will fix its holes and repair its ruined parts.
I will set it up as it was before.
12 Then the people left alive in Edom,
and all the people called by my name, will look to me for help.”
This is what the Lord said,
and he will make it happen.
13 The Lord says, “A time of great blessing is coming.
Workers will still be harvesting
when it is time to plow the fields again.
They will still be trampling the grapes
when it is time for a new crop.
Sweet wine will drip from the mountains
and pour from the hills.
14 I will bring my people, Israel,
back from captivity.
They will rebuild the ruined cities,
and they will live in them.
They will plant vineyards
and drink the wine they produce.
They will plant gardens
and eat the crops they produce.
15 I will plant my people on their land,
and never again will they be pulled up out of the land that I gave them.”
This is what the Lord your God said.

Footnotes

  1. Amos 9:2 ground Literally, “Sheol, the place of the dead.”
  2. Amos 9:2 skies Or “heaven.”
  3. Amos 9:3 Mount Carmel A mountain in northern Israel. This name means “God’s vineyard.” This shows that it was a very fertile hill.
  4. Amos 9:6 skies Literally, “dome” or “vault.”
  5. Amos 9:7 Caphtor An island west of Israel, probably Crete or Cyprus.
  6. Amos 9:7 Kir Where the Arameans came from and where the Assyrians sent them in exile. There are several places with this name.
  7. Amos 9:9 sifter Something like a cup with a screen on its bottom. A sifter is used for removing large lumps from the good flour.
  8. Amos 9:11 David’s tent This probably means the city of Jerusalem or the country of Judah.

9 I saw the Lord standing upon the altar: and he said, Smite the lintel of the door, that the posts may shake: and cut them in the head, all of them; and I will slay the last of them with the sword: he that fleeth of them shall not flee away, and he that escapeth of them shall not be delivered.

2 Though they dig into hell, thence shall mine hand take them; though they climb up to heaven, thence will I bring them down:

3 And though they hide themselves in the top of Carmel, I will search and take them out thence; and though they be hid from my sight in the bottom of the sea, thence will I command the serpent, and he shall bite them:

4 And though they go into captivity before their enemies, thence will I command the sword, and it shall slay them: and I will set mine eyes upon them for evil, and not for good.

5 And the Lord God of hosts is he that toucheth the land, and it shall melt, and all that dwell therein shall mourn: and it shall rise up wholly like a flood; and shall be drowned, as by the flood of Egypt.

6 It is he that buildeth his stories in the heaven, and hath founded his troop in the earth; he that calleth for the waters of the sea, and poureth them out upon the face of the earth: The Lord is his name.

7 Are ye not as children of the Ethiopians unto me, O children of Israel? saith the Lord . Have not I brought up Israel out of the land of Egypt? and the Philistines from Caphtor, and the Syrians from Kir?

8 Behold, the eyes of the Lord God are upon the sinful kingdom, and I will destroy it from off the face of the earth; saving that I will not utterly destroy the house of Jacob, saith the Lord .

9 For, lo, I will command, and I will sift the house of Israel among all nations, like as corn is sifted in a sieve, yet shall not the least grain fall upon the earth.

10 All the sinners of my people shall die by the sword, which say, The evil shall not overtake nor prevent us.

11 In that day will I raise up the tabernacle of David that is fallen, and close up the breaches thereof; and I will raise up his ruins, and I will build it as in the days of old:

12 That they may possess the remnant of Edom, and of all the heathen, which are called by my name, saith the Lord that doeth this.

13 Behold, the days come, saith the Lord , that the plowman shall overtake the reaper, and the treader of grapes him that soweth seed; and the mountains shall drop sweet wine, and all the hills shall melt.

14 And I will bring again the captivity of my people of Israel, and they shall build the waste cities, and inhabit them; and they shall plant vineyards, and drink the wine thereof; they shall also make gardens, and eat the fruit of them.

15 And I will plant them upon their land, and they shall no more be pulled up out of their land which I have given them, saith the Lord thy God.

God’s Judgment Unavoidable

9 I saw the Lord standing beside the ( A ) altar, and He said,

“Strike the pillar capitals so that the ( B ) thresholds will shake,
And ( C ) break them on the heads of them all!
Then I will ( D ) put to death the rest of them with the sword;
They will ( E ) not have a fugitive who will flee,
Nor a survivor who will escape.
2 Though they dig into ( F ) Sheol,
From there My hand will take them;
And though they ( G ) ascend to heaven,
From there I will bring them down.
3 And though they hide on the summit of Carmel,
I will ( H ) track them down and take them from there;
And though they ( I ) hide themselves from My sight on the bottom of the sea,
I will command the ( J ) serpent from there, and it will bite them.
4 And though they go into ( K ) captivity before their enemies,
From there I will command the sword and it will kill them,
And I will ( L ) set My eyes against them for harm and not for good.”

5 The Lord [ a ] God of armies,
The One who ( M ) touches the land so that it quakes,
And ( N ) all those who live in it mourn,
And all of it rises up like the Nile
And subsides like the Nile of Egypt;
6 The One who builds His ( O ) upper chambers in the heavens
And has founded His vaulted dome over the earth,
He who ( P ) calls for the waters of the sea
And ( Q ) pours them out on the face of the earth,
( R ) The Lord is His name.

7 “Are you not as the sons of ( S ) Ethiopia to Me,
You sons of Israel?” declares the Lord .
“Have I not brought up Israel from the land of Egypt,
And the ( T ) Philistines from Caphtor and the ( U ) Arameans from ( V ) Kir?
8 Behold, the ( W ) eyes of the Lord God are on the sinful kingdom,
And I will ( X ) eliminate it from the face of the earth;
Nevertheless, I will ( Y ) not totally eliminate the house of Jacob,”
Declares the Lord .
9 “For behold, I am commanding,
And I will ( Z ) shake the house of Israel among all nations
As grain is shaken in a sieve,
But not a pebble will fall to the ground.
10 All the ( AA ) sinners of My people will die by the sword,
Those who say, ‘ ( AB ) The catastrophe will not overtake or confront us.’

The Restoration of Israel

11 “On that day I will ( AC ) raise up the fallen [ b ] ( AD ) shelter of David,
And wall up its ( AE ) gaps;
I will also raise up its ruins
And rebuild it as in the ( AF ) days of old;
12 ( AG ) So that they may [ c ] possess the remnant of ( AH ) Edom
And all the [ d ] nations who are ( AI ) called by My name,”
Declares the Lord who does this.

13 “Behold, days are coming,” declares the Lord ,
“When the ( AJ ) plowman will overtake the reaper,
And the one who treads grapes will overtake him who sows the seed;
When the ( AK ) mountains will drip grape juice,
And all the hills will come apart.
14 I will also ( AL ) restore the fortunes of My people Israel,
And they will ( AM ) rebuild the desolated cities and live in them ;
They will also ( AN ) plant vineyards and drink their wine,
And make gardens and eat their fruit.
15 I will also plant them on their land,
And ( AO ) they will not be uprooted again from their land
Which I have given them,”
Says the Lord your God.
