Who was Amos?

1 Amos was one of the shepherds who lived in the town of Tekoa. [ a ] God spoke to him. He showed Amos the things that would happen to the people of Israel. God did that two years before the earthquake came. It was during the time that Uzziah was the king of Judah, and Joash's son, Jeroboam, was the king of Israel. This book tells about the message that Amos received from God.

2 Amos said, ‘The Lord speaks loudly from Zion. [ b ] Yes, he shouts from Jerusalem. As a result, the green fields will become dry and the grass will die. There will be nothing for the sheep to eat. Even the grass on Mount Carmel mountain will die.’

God will punish the nations near Israel

3 The Lord says, ‘The people in Damascus have done more and more wrong things. [ c ] So I will certainly punish them!

They have been cruel to the people in Gilead. They used their iron weapons to tear them into pieces. 4 I will send a fire to destroy the palace that King Hazael built. It will destroy the strong buildings of King Ben-Hadad. 5 I will also break the strong gates of the city of Damascus. I will remove all the people who live in the Aven valley. I will remove the king of Beth-Eden. Their enemies will take the people of Syria far away to Kir as prisoners.’ That is what the Lord says.

6 The Lord says, ‘The people in Gaza have done more and more wrong things. [ d ] So I will certainly punish them.

They caught my people and they took them away from their homes. They sold them to the people in Edom. 7 So I will send a fire to burn the walls of Gaza. It will destroy the strong buildings in Gaza. 8 I will remove the king of Ashdod city. And I will remove the king who rules in Ashkelon city. I will punish the people who live in Ekron city. All the Philistines who remain will die.’ That is what the Lord God says.

9 The Lord says, ‘The people in Tyre have done more and more wrong things. So I will certainly punish them.

Before, they had been friends with the people in Israel. They had promised to those people, “We will be like brothers.” But the people from Tyre did not do what they had promised. They took my people away. They sold my people to the people in Edom and my people became slaves. 10 So I will start a fire on the walls of Tyre city. And the fire will burn all the strong buildings. It will destroy them completely.’

11 The Lord says, ‘The people in Edom have done more and more wrong things. So I will certainly punish them.

They took their swords and they chased after their cousins, the Israelites. [ e ] They were not kind. Instead, they continued to be angry all the time. They did not stop attacking them. 12 So I will start a fire. And the fire will destroy the big city of Teman. The fire will also burn the strong buildings of Bozrah city.’

13 The Lord says, ‘The people in Ammon have done more and more wrong things. So I will certainly punish them.

People from Ammon fought against the people in Gilead. Ammon's people wanted to get more land for themselves. While they were killing people there, they also cut pregnant women open. 14 So I will send fire. And the fire will destroy the walls of Rabbah city. It will destroy the strong buildings too. People will fight and they will shout. They will shout loudly, like the noise that a strong wind makes in a storm. 15 The enemies will take away their king and their leaders. They will take them to another country. The king and the leaders will not be free to return.’ That is what the Lord says.

  1. 1:1 Tekoa was a town near Jerusalem. It was where Amos kept his sheep.
  2. 1:2 When we write Lord like this, it is a special name for God. Sometimes people write it as ‘Yahweh’, or as ‘Jehovah’. It is his own name that he told Moses. See Exodus 3:14 . It means ‘I am who I am’. This shows that God has always been there and he always will be there.
  3. 1:3 Damascus was the most important city in Syria (also called Aram).
  4. 1:6 Gaza was a city where the Philistine people lived.
  5. 1:11 The Edomites and the Israelites were from the same family. The Edomites were descendants of Esau. The Israelites were descendants of Jacob. These two brothers were born at the same time from the same mother. Jacob also had the name Israel.

Introduction

1 This is the message of Amos, one of the shepherds from the city Tekoa. He saw visions about Israel during the time that Uzziah was king of Judah and Jeroboam son of Joash was king of Israel. This was two years before the earthquake.

Punishment for Aram

2 Amos said,
“The Lord will shout like a lion in Zion.
His loud voice will roar from Jerusalem.
The green pastures of the shepherds will turn brown and die.
Even Mount Carmel [ a ] will become dry.”

3 This is what the Lord says: “I will definitely punish the people of Damascus for the many crimes they did. [ b ] They crushed the people of Gilead with iron threshing tools. 4 So I will start a fire at Hazael’s [ c ] house that will destroy the great palaces of Ben-Hadad. [ d ]

5 “I will also break open the gates of Damascus [ e ] and remove the one who sits on the throne in the Valley of Aven. [ f ] I will remove the symbol of power from Beth Eden, [ g ] and the Arameans will be defeated and taken back to Kir. [ h ] ” This is what the Lord said.

Punishment for the Philistines

6 This is what the Lord says: “I will definitely punish the people of Gaza [ i ] for the many crimes they did. They took an entire nation of people and sent them as slaves to Edom. 7 So I will start a fire at the wall of Gaza that will destroy the high towers in Gaza. 8 And I will destroy the one who sits on the throne in Ashdod. I will destroy the king who holds the scepter in Ashkelon. I will punish the people of Ekron. [ j ] Then the Philistines who are still left alive will die.” This is what the Lord God said.

Punishment for Phoenicia

9 This is what the Lord says: “I will definitely punish the people of Tyre [ k ] for the many crimes they did. They took an entire nation and sent them as slaves to Edom. They did not remember the agreement they had made with their brothers. [ l ] 10 So I will start a fire at the walls of Tyre that will destroy the high towers in Tyre.”

Punishment for the Edomites

11 This is what the Lord says: “I will definitely punish the people of Edom for their many crimes. Edom chased his brother with the sword, and he showed no mercy. His anger never stopped. He kept tearing and tearing at Israel like a wild animal. 12 So I will start a fire at Teman that will destroy the high towers of Bozrah.”

Punishment for the Ammonites

13 This is what the Lord says: “I will definitely punish the Ammonites [ m ] for the many crimes they did. They killed the pregnant women in Gilead. The Ammonites did this so that they could take that land and make their country larger. 14 So I will start a fire at the wall of Rabbah [ n ] that will destroy the high towers of Rabbah. Troubles will come to them like a whirlwind [ o ] into their country. 15 Then their kings and leaders will be captured. They will all be taken together.” This is what the Lord said.

  1. Amos 1:2 Mount Carmel A mountain in northern Israel. The name means “God’s vineyard.” This shows that it was a very fertile hill.
  2. Amos 1:3 for the many crimes they did Literally, “for three crimes … and for four ….” This shows that these people were very sinful—and it was time to punish them. Also in verses 6, 9, 11, 13; 2:1, 4, 6.
  3. Amos 1:4 Hazael Hazael was the king of Aram (Syria). He murdered Ben-Hadad I so that he could become king. See 2 Kings 8:7.
  4. Amos 1:4 Ben-Hadad Ben-Hadad II, the son of Hazael, king of Aram (Syria). See 2 Kings 13:3.
  5. Amos 1:5 Damascus The capital city of Aram (Syria).
  6. Amos 1:5 the Valley of Aven A name that can mean “Restful Valley” or “Empty Valley of Misfortune.”
  7. Amos 1:5 Beth Eden The royal city of Aram (Syria) on Mount Lebanon. This name means “House of Pleasure” or “Paradise.”
  8. Amos 1:5 Kir Or “Kur,” an area controlled by the Assyrians. See Amos 9:7.
  9. Amos 1:6 Gaza An important city of the Philistines.
  10. Amos 1:8 Ashdod, Ashkelon, Ekron Important cities of the Philistines.
  11. Amos 1:9 Tyre The capital city of Phoenicia.
  12. Amos 1:9 brothers The people of Israel.
  13. Amos 1:13 Ammonites The Ammonites were the descendants of Ben-Ammi, son of Lot. Read Gen. 19:38.
  14. Amos 1:14 Rabbah The capital city of the Ammonites.
  15. Amos 1:14 whirlwind A strong wind that blows in a circle.

1 The words of Amos, who was among the herdmen of Tekoa, which he saw concerning Israel in the days of Uzziah king of Judah, and in the days of Jeroboam the son of Joash king of Israel, two years before the earthquake.

2 And he said, The Lord will roar from Zion, and utter his voice from Jerusalem; and the habitations of the shepherds shall mourn, and the top of Carmel shall wither.

3 Thus saith the Lord ; For three transgressions of Damascus, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because they have threshed Gilead with threshing instruments of iron:

4 But I will send a fire into the house of Hazael, which shall devour the palaces of Benhadad.

5 I will break also the bar of Damascus, and cut off the inhabitant from the plain of Aven, and him that holdeth the sceptre from the house of Eden: and the people of Syria shall go into captivity unto Kir, saith the Lord .

6 Thus saith the Lord ; For three transgressions of Gaza, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because they carried away captive the whole captivity, to deliver them up to Edom:

7 But I will send a fire on the wall of Gaza, which shall devour the palaces thereof:

8 And I will cut off the inhabitant from Ashdod, and him that holdeth the sceptre from Ashkelon, and I will turn mine hand against Ekron: and the remnant of the Philistines shall perish, saith the Lord God .

9 Thus saith the Lord ; For three transgressions of Tyrus, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because they delivered up the whole captivity to Edom, and remembered not the brotherly covenant:

10 But I will send a fire on the wall of Tyrus, which shall devour the palaces thereof.

11 Thus saith the Lord ; For three transgressions of Edom, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because he did pursue his brother with the sword, and did cast off all pity, and his anger did tear perpetually, and he kept his wrath for ever:

12 But I will send a fire upon Teman, which shall devour the palaces of Bozrah.

13 Thus saith the Lord ; For three transgressions of the children of Ammon, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because they have ripped up the women with child of Gilead, that they might enlarge their border:

14 But I will kindle a fire in the wall of Rabbah, and it shall devour the palaces thereof, with shouting in the day of battle, with a tempest in the day of the whirlwind:

15 And their king shall go into captivity, he and his princes together, saith the Lord .

Judgment on Neighbor Nations

1 The words of Amos, who was among the ( A ) sheepherders from ( B ) Tekoa, which he saw in visions concerning Israel in the days of ( C ) Uzziah king of Judah, and in the days of ( D ) Jeroboam son of Joash, king of Israel, two years before the ( E ) earthquake.

2 And he said,
“The ( F ) Lord roars from Zion,
And from Jerusalem He utters His voice;
And the shepherds’ ( G ) pasture grounds mourn,
And the [ a ] ( H ) summit of Carmel dries up.”

3 This is what the Lord says:
“For ( I ) three offenses of ( J ) Damascus, and for four,
I will not [ b ] revoke its punishment ,
Because they threshed Gilead with iron sledges.
4 So I will send fire upon the house of Hazael,
And it will consume the citadels of ( K ) Ben-hadad.
5 I will also ( L ) break the gate bar of Damascus,
And eliminate every inhabitant from the [ c ] Valley of Aven,
As well as him who holds the scepter, from Beth-eden;
So the people of Aram will be exiled to ( M ) Kir,”
Says the Lord .

6 This is what the Lord says:
“For three offenses of ( N ) Gaza, and for four,
I will not revoke its punishment ,
Because they led into exile an entire population
To ( O ) turn them over to Edom.
7 So I will send fire on the wall of Gaza
And it will consume her citadels.
8 I will also eliminate every inhabitant from ( P ) Ashdod,
As well as him who holds the scepter, from ( Q ) Ashkelon;
And I will direct My [ d ] power against Ekron,
And the remnant of the ( R ) Philistines will perish,”
Says the Lord [ e ] God .

9 This is what the Lord says:
“For three offenses of ( S ) Tyre, and for four,
I will not revoke its punishment ,
Because they turned an entire population over to Edom
And did not remember the covenant of [ f ] ( T ) brotherhood.
10 So I will ( U ) send fire on the wall of Tyre,
And it will consume her citadels.”

11 This is what the Lord says:
“For three offenses of ( V ) Edom, and for four,
I will not revoke its punishment ,
Because he ( W ) pursued his brother with the sword
And stifled his compassion;
His anger also ( X ) tore continually,
And he maintained his fury forever.
12 So I will send fire upon ( Y ) Teman
And it will consume the citadels of Bozrah.”

13 This is what the Lord says:
“For three offenses of the sons of ( Z ) Ammon, and for four,
I will not revoke its punishment ,
Because they ( AA ) ripped open the pregnant women of Gilead
In order to ( AB ) enlarge their borders.
14 So I will kindle a fire on the wall of ( AC ) Rabbah,
And it will consume her citadels
Amid [ g ] ( AD ) war cries on the day of battle,
And amid a ( AE ) storm on the day of tempest.
15 Their ( AF ) king will go into exile,
He and his princes together,” says the Lord .

4 I will send fire ( M ) on the house of Hazael ( N )
that will consume the fortresses ( O ) of Ben-Hadad. ( P )
5 I will break down the gate ( Q ) of Damascus;
I will destroy the king who is in [ b ] the Valley of Aven [ c ]
and the one who holds the scepter in Beth Eden. ( R )
The people of Aram will go into exile to Kir, ( S ) ”
says the Lord . ( T )

6 This is what the Lord says:

“For three sins of Gaza, ( U )
even for four, I will not relent. ( V )
Because she took captive whole communities
and sold them to Edom, ( W )
7 I will send fire on the walls of Gaza
that will consume her fortresses.
8 I will destroy the king [ d ] of Ashdod ( X )
and the one who holds the scepter in Ashkelon.
I will turn my hand ( Y ) against Ekron,
till the last of the Philistines ( Z ) are dead,” ( AA )
says the Sovereign Lord . ( AB )

9 This is what the Lord says:

“For three sins of Tyre, ( AC )
even for four, I will not relent. ( AD )
Because she sold whole communities of captives to Edom,
disregarding a treaty of brotherhood, ( AE )
10 I will send fire on the walls of Tyre
that will consume her fortresses. ( AF ) ”

11 This is what the Lord says:

“For three sins of Edom, ( AG )
even for four, I will not relent.
Because he pursued his brother with a sword ( AH )
and slaughtered the women of the land,
because his anger raged continually
and his fury flamed unchecked, ( AI )
12 I will send fire on Teman ( AJ )
that will consume the fortresses of Bozrah. ( AK ) ”

13 This is what the Lord says:

“For three sins of Ammon, ( AL )
even for four, I will not relent.
Because he ripped open the pregnant women ( AM ) of Gilead
in order to extend his borders,
14 I will set fire to the walls of Rabbah ( AN )
that will consume ( AO ) her fortresses
amid war cries ( AP ) on the day of battle,
amid violent winds ( AQ ) on a stormy day.
15 Her king [ e ] will go into exile,
he and his officials together, ( AR ) ”
says the Lord . ( AS )
