- Acts Chapter 3
3 One day, Peter and John went to the temple in Jerusalem. It was three o'clock in the afternoon. This was the time that everyone went there to pray. 2 There was a man who could not walk. He had never been able to walk. Every day, his friends put him at the gate of the temple. It was called the Beautiful Gate. As people were going in through the gate, the man asked them for money. His friends were carrying him there when Peter and John arrived. 3 The man saw Peter and John as they were coming through the gate. So he asked them to give him some money. 4 Peter looked carefully at the man and so did John. Peter said to him, ‘Look at us!’ 5 So the man looked at Peter and John. He thought that they would give him some money.
6 Then Peter said to the man, ‘I do not have any money. But I do have something else that I will give to you. Jesus Christ from Nazareth gave me authority to do this. So now I tell you to walk!’ 7 Peter held the man's right hand and he helped him to stand up. Immediately the man's feet and ankles became strong. 8 The man jumped up and he stood on his feet. Then he began to walk about. He went into the temple with Peter and John. He was walking and jumping and he was praising God. 9 A large crowd of people were there. They saw the man walking. They heard him praising God. 10 ‘Look!’ they said. ‘We know this man. He usually sits at the Beautiful Gate of the temple and he asks people for money. What has happened to him?’ They were all very surprised.
11 The man was still holding Peter and John as they went into the yard of the temple. All the people were very surprised about what they saw. So they ran to Peter and John at the place called Solomon's porch. 12 Peter saw all the people who had come together. So he said to them, ‘People of Israel, you should not be so surprised about what you have seen. You should not look at us as if we ourselves are powerful. It is not because we obey God that we could cause this man to walk again. 13 It happened because of Jesus, who was the special servant of God. That is the God of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and our other ancestors who lived long ago. [ a ] God has raised his servant Jesus up to a place of honour.
You helped the rulers to take hold of Jesus. The Roman ruler Pilate had decided to let Jesus go free. But you turned against Jesus. 14 Jesus was God's Holy One who always did what was right. But you did not accept him. You told Pilate to let another man go free instead of Jesus. That man was in prison because he had killed people. 15 But Jesus is the person who leads people to true life. When you refused him, it meant that you killed him. But God made him alive again and raised him up from death. We ourselves saw him alive after he had died and we are telling you about it.
16 It is the power of Jesus that has made this man completely well again. We believe in him. We know that he has authority. You know this man. You saw that he had weak legs. Jesus has caused this man's legs to become strong. You can all see for yourselves what has happened. Yes, he is now well because we havetrusted Jesus and his power.
17 Friends, when you did all this to Jesus, you did not really know what you were doing. Your leaders also did not understand. 18 Jesus was God's Messiah. A long time ago, many of God's prophets spoke about him. They spoke God's message about what would happen to the Messiah. They said that he would suffer. God has now caused these things to happen. 19 So you must stop doing wrong things. Change how you live and turn to God. Then God will forgive you for all the wrong things that you have done. 20 The Lord God will help you. Times will come when he will cause your spirit to be strong. He has already chosen Jesus as the one to help you. He is God's Messiah, and God will send him back to you again. 21 Jesus must stay in heaven until the day that God will cause everything to become new again. Long ago God gave his prophets a message about this, and they told that message to people. 22 For example, Moses said this about the Messiah a long time ago: “The Lord your God will send you a prophet. He will be one of your own people. He will speak God's message as I have done. You must obey everything that he says to you. 23 God will punish anyone who does not obey that prophet. He will no longer be one of God's people and God will destroy him.” ’ [ b ]
24 Peter then said, ‘All of God's prophets spoke about what is happening in these days. Samuel was one of them, and all the prophets who came later also spoke the same message. 25 You are the people who receive that message from God today. The promise that God made to bless our ancestors is the same promise that he makes to you. God said to our ancestor Abraham, “Through your descendants, I will bless all the people on the earth.” [ c ]
26 God chose Jesus to be his special servant. God sent him to you first. He wants to help you, so that you stop doing bad things. That is how he will bless you.’
3 One day Peter and John went to the Temple area. It was three o’clock in the afternoon, which was the time for the daily Temple prayer service. 2 As they were entering the Temple area, a man was there who had been crippled all his life. He was being carried by some friends who brought him to the Temple every day. They put him by one of the gates outside the Temple. It was called Beautiful Gate. There he begged for money from the people going to the Temple. 3 That day he saw Peter and John going into the Temple area. He asked them for money.
4 Peter and John looked at the crippled man and said, “Look at us!” 5 He looked at them; he thought they would give him some money. 6 But Peter said, “I don’t have any silver or gold, but I do have something else I can give you. By the power of Jesus Christ from Nazareth—stand up and walk!”
7 Then Peter took the man’s right hand and lifted him up. Immediately his feet and legs became strong. 8 He jumped up, stood on his feet, and began to walk. He went into the Temple area with them. He was walking and jumping and praising God. 9-10 All the people recognized him. They knew he was the crippled man who always sat by the Beautiful Gate to beg for money. Now they saw this same man walking and praising God. They were amazed. They did not understand how this could happen.
11 The man was holding on to Peter and John. All the people were amazed. They ran to Peter and John at Solomon’s Porch.
12 When Peter saw this, he said to the people, “My Jewish brothers, why are you surprised at this? You are looking at us as if it was our power that made this man walk. Do you think this was done because we are good? 13 No, God did it! He is the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. He is the God of all our fathers. He gave glory to Jesus, his special servant. But you handed him over to be killed. Pilate decided to let him go free. But you told Pilate you did not want him. 14 Jesus was holy and good, but you said you did not want him. You told Pilate to give you a murderer [ a ] instead of Jesus. 15 And so you killed the one who gives life! But God raised him from death. We are witnesses of this—we saw it with our own eyes.
16 “This crippled man was healed because we trusted in Jesus. It was Jesus’ power that made him well. You can see this man, and you know him. He was made completely well because of faith in Jesus. You all saw it happen!
17 “My brothers, I know that what you did to Jesus was done because you did not understand what you were doing. And your leaders did not understand any more than you did. 18 But God said these things would happen. Through the prophets he said that his Messiah would suffer and die. I have told you how God made this happen. 19 So you must change your hearts and lives. Come back to God, and he will forgive your sins. 20 Then the Lord will give you times of spiritual rest. He will send you Jesus, the one he chose to be the Messiah.
21 “But Jesus must stay in heaven until the time when all things will be made right again. God told about this time when he spoke long ago through his holy prophets. 22 Moses said, ‘The Lord your God will give you a prophet. That prophet will come from among your own people. He will be like me. You must obey everything he tells you. 23 And anyone who refuses to obey that prophet will die, separated from God’s people.’ [ b ]
24 “Samuel, and all the other prophets who spoke for God after Samuel, said that this time would come. 25 And what those prophets talked about is for you, their descendants. You have received the agreement that God made with your fathers. God said to your father Abraham, ‘Every nation on earth will be blessed through your descendants.’ [ c ] 26 God has sent his special servant Jesus. He sent him to you first. He sent him to bless you by causing each of you to turn away from your evil ways.”
3 Now Peter and John went up together into the temple at the hour of prayer, being the ninth hour.
2 And a certain man lame from his mother's womb was carried, whom they laid daily at the gate of the temple which is called Beautiful, to ask alms of them that entered into the temple;
3 Who seeing Peter and John about to go into the temple asked an alms.
4 And Peter, fastening his eyes upon him with John, said, Look on us.
5 And he gave heed unto them, expecting to receive something of them.
6 Then Peter said, Silver and gold have I none; but such as I have give I thee: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk.
7 And he took him by the right hand, and lifted him up: and immediately his feet and ankle bones received strength.
8 And he leaping up stood, and walked, and entered with them into the temple, walking, and leaping, and praising God.
9 And all the people saw him walking and praising God:
10 And they knew that it was he which sat for alms at the Beautiful gate of the temple: and they were filled with wonder and amazement at that which had happened unto him.
11 And as the lame man which was healed held Peter and John, all the people ran together unto them in the porch that is called Solomon's, greatly wondering.
12 And when Peter saw it, he answered unto the people, Ye men of Israel, why marvel ye at this? or why look ye so earnestly on us, as though by our own power or holiness we had made this man to walk?
13 The God of Abraham, and of Isaac, and of Jacob, the God of our fathers, hath glorified his Son Jesus; whom ye delivered up, and denied him in the presence of Pilate, when he was determined to let him go.
14 But ye denied the Holy One and the Just, and desired a murderer to be granted unto you;
15 And killed the Prince of life, whom God hath raised from the dead; whereof we are witnesses.
16 And his name through faith in his name hath made this man strong, whom ye see and know: yea, the faith which is by him hath given him this perfect soundness in the presence of you all.
17 And now, brethren, I wot that through ignorance ye did it, as did also your rulers.
18 But those things, which God before had shewed by the mouth of all his prophets, that Christ should suffer, he hath so fulfilled.
19 Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord.
20 And he shall send Jesus Christ, which before was preached unto you:
21 Whom the heaven must receive until the times of restitution of all things, which God hath spoken by the mouth of all his holy prophets since the world began.
22 For Moses truly said unto the fathers, A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren, like unto me; him shall ye hear in all things whatsoever he shall say unto you.
23 And it shall come to pass, that every soul, which will not hear that prophet, shall be destroyed from among the people.
24 Yea, and all the prophets from Samuel and those that follow after, as many as have spoken, have likewise foretold of these days.
25 Ye are the children of the prophets, and of the covenant which God made with our fathers, saying unto Abraham, And in thy seed shall all the kindreds of the earth be blessed.
26 Unto you first God, having raised up his Son Jesus, sent him to bless you, in turning away every one of you from his iniquities.
3 Now ( A ) Peter and John were going up to the temple at the [ a ] ninth hour , ( B ) the hour of prayer. 2 And ( C ) a man who had been unable to walk from [ b ] birth was being carried, whom they ( D ) used to set down every day at the gate of the temple which is called Beautiful, ( E ) in order for him to beg for charitable gifts from those entering the temple grounds . 3 When he saw ( F ) Peter and John about to go into the temple grounds , he began asking to receive a charitable gift. 4 But Peter, along with John, ( G ) looked at him intently and said, “Look at us!” 5 And he gave them his attention, expecting to receive something from them. 6 But Peter said, “I do not have silver and gold, but what I do have I give to you: ( H ) In the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, walk!” 7 And grasping him by the right hand, he raised him up; and immediately his feet and his ankles were strengthened. 8 And ( I ) leaping up, he stood and began to walk; and he entered the temple with them, walking and leaping and praising God. 9 And ( J ) all the people saw him walking and praising God; 10 and they recognized him as being the very one who used to ( K ) sit at the Beautiful Gate of the temple to beg for charitable gifts, and they were filled with wonder and amazement at what had happened to him.
11 While he was clinging to ( L ) Peter and John, all the people ran together to them at the [ c ] ( M ) portico named Solomon’s, completely astonished. 12 But when Peter saw this , he replied to the people, “Men of Israel, why are you amazed at this, or why are you staring at us, as though by our own power or godliness we had made him walk? 13 ( N ) The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, ( O ) the God of our fathers, has glorified His [ d ] ( P ) servant Jesus, the one whom ( Q ) you handed over and disowned in the presence of ( R ) Pilate, when he had ( S ) decided to release Him . 14 But you disowned ( T ) the Holy and Righteous One, and ( U ) asked for a murderer to be granted to you, 15 but put to death the [ e ] ( V ) Prince of life, whom ( W ) God raised from the dead, [ f ] a fact to which we are ( X ) witnesses. 16 And on the basis of faith ( Y ) in His name, it is [ g ] the name of Jesus which has strengthened this man whom you see and know; and the faith which comes through Him has given him this perfect health in the presence of you all.
17 “And now, brothers, I know that you acted ( Z ) in ignorance, just as your ( AA ) rulers also did. 18 But the things which ( AB ) God previously announced by the mouths of all the prophets, ( AC ) that His [ h ] Christ would suffer, He has fulfilled in this way. 19 Therefore ( AD ) repent and return, so that your sins may be wiped away, in order that ( AE ) times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord; 20 and that He may send Jesus, the [ i ] Christ appointed for you, 21 ( AF ) whom heaven must receive until the [ j ] period of ( AG ) restoration of all things, about which ( AH ) God spoke by the mouths of His holy prophets from ancient times. 22 Moses said, ‘ ( AI ) The Lord God will raise up for you a prophet like me from your countrymen; to Him you shall listen regarding everything He says to you. 23 ( AJ ) And it shall be that every ( AK ) soul that does not listen to that prophet ( AL ) shall be utterly destroyed from among the people.’ 24 And likewise, ( AM ) all the prophets who have spoken from Samuel and his successors onward , have also announced these days. 25 It is you who are ( AN ) the sons of the prophets and of the ( AO ) covenant which God ordained with your fathers, saying to Abraham, ‘ ( AP ) And in your seed all the families of the earth shall be blessed .’ 26 God ( AQ ) raised up His [ k ] Servant for you ( AR ) first, and sent Him to bless you by turning every one of you from your wicked ways.”
3 One day Peter and John ( A ) were going up to the temple ( B ) at the time of prayer—at three in the afternoon. ( C ) 2 Now a man who was lame from birth ( D ) was being carried to the temple gate ( E ) called Beautiful, where he was put every day to beg ( F ) from those going into the temple courts. 3 When he saw Peter and John about to enter, he asked them for money. 4 Peter looked straight at him, as did John. Then Peter said, “Look at us!” 5 So the man gave them his attention, expecting to get something from them.
6 Then Peter said, “Silver or gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, ( G ) walk.” 7 Taking him by the right hand, he helped him up, and instantly the man’s feet and ankles became strong. 8 He jumped to his feet and began to walk. Then he went with them into the temple courts, walking and jumping, ( H ) and praising God. 9 When all the people ( I ) saw him walking and praising God, 10 they recognized him as the same man who used to sit begging at the temple gate called Beautiful, ( J ) and they were filled with wonder and amazement at what had happened to him.
11 While the man held on to Peter and John, ( K ) all the people were astonished and came running to them in the place called Solomon’s Colonnade. ( L ) 12 When Peter saw this, he said to them: “Fellow Israelites, why does this surprise you? Why do you stare at us as if by our own power or godliness we had made this man walk? 13 The God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, ( M ) the God of our fathers, ( N ) has glorified his servant Jesus. You handed him over ( O ) to be killed, and you disowned him before Pilate, ( P ) though he had decided to let him go. ( Q ) 14 You disowned the Holy ( R ) and Righteous One ( S ) and asked that a murderer be released to you. ( T ) 15 You killed the author of life, but God raised him from the dead. ( U ) We are witnesses ( V ) of this. 16 By faith in the name of Jesus, ( W ) this man whom you see and know was made strong. It is Jesus’ name and the faith that comes through him that has completely healed him, as you can all see.
17 “Now, fellow Israelites, ( X ) I know that you acted in ignorance, ( Y ) as did your leaders. ( Z ) 18 But this is how God fulfilled ( AA ) what he had foretold ( AB ) through all the prophets, ( AC ) saying that his Messiah would suffer. ( AD ) 19 Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, ( AE ) that times of refreshing may come from the Lord, 20 and that he may send the Messiah, ( AF ) who has been appointed for you—even Jesus. 21 Heaven must receive him ( AG ) until the time comes for God to restore everything, ( AH ) as he promised long ago through his holy prophets. ( AI ) 22 For Moses said, ‘The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your own people; you must listen to everything he tells you. ( AJ ) 23 Anyone who does not listen to him will be completely cut off from their people.’ [ a ] ( AK )
24 “Indeed, beginning with Samuel, all the prophets ( AL ) who have spoken have foretold these days. 25 And you are heirs ( AM ) of the prophets and of the covenant ( AN ) God made with your fathers. He said to Abraham, ‘Through your offspring all peoples on earth will be blessed.’ [ b ] ( AO ) 26 When God raised up ( AP ) his servant, he sent him first ( AQ ) to you to bless you by turning each of you from your wicked ways.”
