Paul thanks God for Timothy

1 This letter is from me, Paul. God chose me to be an apostle of Christ Jesus. God sent me to tell people about the true life that he has promised us. We receive this life when we belong to Christ Jesus.

2 I am writing to you, Timothy. You are like my own child, and I love you very much.

I pray that God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord will continue to help you and be kind to you. I pray that they will give you peace in your mind.

3 Like my ancestors, I serve God in a good way, that I know is right. When I pray to God, at night and during the day, I always remember to pray for you. And I thank God for you. 4 I remember how you wept when I said ‘goodbye’ to you. I want to see you again very much, so that I may be completely happy. 5 I remember how you really believe in Christ. Your grandmother, Lois, and your mother, Eunice, already believed in Christ before you did. Now I am sure that you yourself also really trust him. 6 For that reason, I want you to remember the gift that God gave you when I put my hands on you. [ a ] Use that gift more and more to serve God well. 7 Be strong, because God has given us his Spirit. And his Spirit does not cause us to be afraid. Instead, his Spirit causes us to be powerful to serve God. He helps us to love God and other people. And he helps us to control ourselves properly.

Paul tells Timothy to be a brave teacher for Christ

8 So do not be ashamed of the message about our Lord that we tell people. And do not be ashamed of me because I am in a prison. I am a prisoner because I serve Christ. You must understand that you will have trouble because you tell people the good news about Jesus Christ. So be ready to have the same kind of trouble as I have. Let God make you strong when you have trouble. 9 God is the one who has saved us. He has chosen us to serve him with good, clean lives. He did not save us because of any good things that we have done. He chose to do it because he is very kind. He decided to do that before time began, because of what Christ Jesus would do for us. 10 Now Christ Jesus has come to save us, and we have seen how kind God is. Christ has destroyed death's power over us. We have heard the good news that he brought to us. So now we understand about life with God for ever.

11 That is the same good news that God has chosen me to tell to people. He has sent me as his apostle to teach his message to people. 12 That is why I have these troubles. But I am not ashamed to be in prison. I have believed in Christ and I know him well. I know that I can trust him to keep his message safe. God has given me the authority to speak that message to people at this time. [ b ] Christ has the power to keep it safe until that great day when he comes back. [ c ]

13 You have heard me tell you about God's true message. Let those words be an example to you, so that you also teach what is true. Do this because you belong to Christ Jesus. Continue to trust him and to love his people. 14 God has given you his good message to keep safe. God's Holy Spirit, who lives in us, will help you to keep it safe.

Onesiphorus

15 You know that almost all the believers in Asia region have turned against me. They include Phygelus and Hermogenes. [ d ]

16 But Onesiphorus has stayed to help me. I pray that the Lord will be kind to his family. He often came to help me not to be sad. I am in prison, but he was not ashamed to help me. 17 When he came here to Rome, he looked carefully for me until he found me. 18 I pray that the Lord will be kind to Onesiphorus on that great day when he judges people. [ e ] You know very well how much Onesiphorus helped me in Ephesus.

Footnotes

  1. 1:6 The Christian leaders had put their hands on Timothy and they had prayed for him when he started to serve God. See 1 Timothy 4:14 . At that time, God had given Timothy a special gift so that he could be a good leader of the church and a teacher. That authority came from God's Spirit. Perhaps Timothy had been afraid to use that authority. So Paul tells him that he must use it. He must be brave to teach the true Christian message.
  2. 1:12 It is not completely clear what this verse means. It could mean ‘Christ will keep safe what I have given to him’. Or it could mean ‘Christ will keep safe what he has given to me’. Christ had chosen Paul to teach his good news. So Paul is probably saying that he trusts Christ to keep that message safe.
  3. 1:12 That great day when Jesus comes back is the day when he will judge everyone. He will decide what should happen to them after their death.
  4. 1:15 Timothy was the leader of the believers in Ephesus. Ephesus was the capital city of the Roman region called Asia. It was in the country now called Turkey.
  5. 1:18 ‘That great day’ means the day when Jesus will judge everyone. He will decide what should happen to them after their death. See also verse 12.

1 Greetings from Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus. I am an apostle because God wanted me to be. God sent me to tell people about the promise of life that is in Christ Jesus.

2 To Timothy, a dear son to me.

Grace, mercy, and peace to you from God the Father and from Christ Jesus our Lord.

Thanksgiving and Encouragement

3 I always remember you in my prayers day and night. And in these prayers I thank God for you. He is the God my ancestors served, and I have always served him with a clear conscience. 4 I remember that you cried for me. I want very much to see you so that I can be filled with joy. 5 I remember your true faith. That kind of faith first belonged to your grandmother Lois and to your mother Eunice. I know you now have that same faith. 6 That is why I want you to remember the gift God gave you. God gave you that gift when I laid my hands on you. Now I want you to use that gift and let it grow more and more, like a small flame grows into a fire. 7 The Spirit God gave us does not make us afraid. His Spirit is a source of power and love and self-control.

8 So don’t be ashamed to tell people about our Lord Jesus. And don’t be ashamed of me—I am in prison for the Lord. But suffer with me for the Good News. God gives us the strength to do that.

9 God saved us and chose us to be his holy people, but not because of anything we ourselves did. God saved us and made us his people because that was what he wanted and because of his grace. That grace was given to us through Christ Jesus before time began. 10 And now it has been shown to us in the coming of our Savior Christ Jesus. He destroyed death and showed us the way to have life. Yes, through the Good News Jesus showed us the way to have life that cannot be destroyed.

11 I was chosen to tell people that message as an apostle and teacher. 12 And I suffer now because of that work. But I am not ashamed, because I know the one I have put my trust in. And I am sure that he is able to protect what I have put into his care [ a ] until that Day.

13 What you heard me teach is an example of what you should teach. Follow that model of right teaching with the faith and love we have in Christ Jesus. 14 This teaching is a treasure that you have been trusted with. Protect it with the help of the Holy Spirit, who lives inside us.

15 You know that everyone in Asia has left me. Even Phygelus and Hermogenes have left me. 16 I pray that the Lord will show mercy to the family of Onesiphorus. Many times Onesiphorus encouraged me. He was not ashamed that I was in prison. 17 No, he was not ashamed. When he came to Rome, he looked and looked for me until he found me. 18 I pray that the Lord Jesus will make sure Onesiphorus receives mercy from the Lord God on that Day. You know how many ways this brother helped me in Ephesus.

Footnotes

  1. 2 Timothy 1:12 what … care Or “what he has trusted me with.”

1 Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, according to the promise of life which is in Christ Jesus,

2 To Timothy, my dearly beloved son: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.

3 I thank God, whom I serve from my forefathers with pure conscience, that without ceasing I have remembrance of thee in my prayers night and day;

4 Greatly desiring to see thee, being mindful of thy tears, that I may be filled with joy;

5 When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also.

6 Wherefore I put thee in remembrance that thou stir up the gift of God, which is in thee by the putting on of my hands.

7 For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

8 Be not thou therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner: but be thou partaker of the afflictions of the gospel according to the power of God;

9 Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began,

10 But is now made manifest by the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who hath abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel:

11 Whereunto I am appointed a preacher, and an apostle, and a teacher of the Gentiles.

12 For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.

13 Hold fast the form of sound words, which thou hast heard of me, in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.

14 That good thing which was committed unto thee keep by the Holy Ghost which dwelleth in us.

15 This thou knowest, that all they which are in Asia be turned away from me; of whom are Phygellus and Hermogenes.

16 The Lord give mercy unto the house of Onesiphorus; for he oft refreshed me, and was not ashamed of my chain:

17 But, when he was in Rome, he sought me out very diligently, and found me.

18 The Lord grant unto him that he may find mercy of the Lord in that day: and in how many things he ministered unto me at Ephesus, thou knowest very well.

Timothy Charged to Guard His Trust

1 Paul, ( A ) an apostle of ( B ) Christ Jesus [ a ] ( C ) by the will of God, according to the promise of ( D ) life in Christ Jesus,

2 To ( E ) Timothy, my beloved [ b ] ( F ) son: ( G ) Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.

3 ( H ) I thank God, whom I ( I ) serve with a ( J ) clear conscience [ c ] the way my forefathers did, ( K ) as I constantly remember you in my [ d ] prayers night and day, 4 ( L ) longing to see you, ( M ) even as I recall your tears, so that I may be filled with joy. 5 [ e ] For I am mindful of the ( N ) sincere faith within you, which first dwelled in your grandmother Lois and ( O ) your mother Eunice, and I am sure that it is in you as well. 6 For this reason I remind you to kindle afresh ( P ) the gift of God which is in you through ( Q ) the laying on of my hands. 7 For God has not given us a ( R ) spirit of [ f ] timidity, but of power and love and [ g ] discipline.

8 Therefore ( S ) do not be ashamed of the ( T ) testimony of our Lord or of me ( U ) His prisoner, but join with me in ( V ) suffering for the ( W ) gospel according to the power of God, 9 who ( X ) saved us and ( Y ) called us with a holy ( Z ) calling, ( AA ) not according to our works, but according to His own ( AB ) purpose and grace, which was granted to us in ( AC ) Christ Jesus from ( AD ) all eternity, 10 but has ( AE ) now been revealed by the ( AF ) appearing of our Savior ( AG ) Christ Jesus, who ( AH ) abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel, 11 ( AI ) for which I was appointed a preacher, an apostle, and a teacher. 12 For this reason I also suffer these things; but ( AJ ) I am not ashamed, for I know ( AK ) whom I have believed, and I am convinced that He is able to ( AL ) protect what I have entrusted to Him [ h ] until ( AM ) that day. 13 ( AN ) Hold on to the ( AO ) example of ( AP ) sound words ( AQ ) which you have heard from me, in the ( AR ) faith and love which are in ( AS ) Christ Jesus. 14 Protect, through the Holy Spirit who ( AT ) dwells in us, the [ i ] ( AU ) treasure which has been entrusted to you .

15 You are aware of the fact that all who are in [ j ] ( AV ) Asia ( AW ) turned away from me, among whom are Phygelus and Hermogenes. 16 The Lord grant mercy to ( AX ) the household of Onesiphorus, for he often refreshed me and ( AY ) was not ashamed of my [ k ] ( AZ ) chains; 17 but when he was in Rome, he eagerly searched for me and found me— 18 the Lord grant to him to find mercy from the Lord on ( BA ) that day—and you know very well what services he rendered at ( BB ) Ephesus.

1 Paul, an apostle ( A ) of Christ Jesus by the will of God, ( B ) in keeping with the promise of life that is in Christ Jesus, ( C )

2 To Timothy, ( D ) my dear son: ( E )

Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. ( F )

Thanksgiving

3 I thank God, ( G ) whom I serve, as my ancestors did, with a clear conscience, ( H ) as night and day I constantly remember you in my prayers. ( I ) 4 Recalling your tears, ( J ) I long to see you, ( K ) so that I may be filled with joy. 5 I am reminded of your sincere faith, ( L ) which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice ( M ) and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also.

Appeal for Loyalty to Paul and the Gospel

6 For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands. ( N ) 7 For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, ( O ) but gives us power, ( P ) love and self-discipline. 8 So do not be ashamed ( Q ) of the testimony about our Lord or of me his prisoner. ( R ) Rather, join with me in suffering for the gospel, ( S ) by the power of God. 9 He has saved ( T ) us and called ( U ) us to a holy life—not because of anything we have done ( V ) but because of his own purpose and grace. This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time, 10 but it has now been revealed ( W ) through the appearing of our Savior, Christ Jesus, ( X ) who has destroyed death ( Y ) and has brought life and immortality to light through the gospel. 11 And of this gospel ( Z ) I was appointed ( AA ) a herald and an apostle and a teacher. ( AB ) 12 That is why I am suffering as I am. Yet this is no cause for shame, ( AC ) because I know whom I have believed, and am convinced that he is able to guard ( AD ) what I have entrusted to him until that day. ( AE )

13 What you heard from me, ( AF ) keep ( AG ) as the pattern ( AH ) of sound teaching, ( AI ) with faith and love in Christ Jesus. ( AJ ) 14 Guard ( AK ) the good deposit that was entrusted to you—guard it with the help of the Holy Spirit who lives in us. ( AL )

Examples of Disloyalty and Loyalty

15 You know that everyone in the province of Asia ( AM ) has deserted me, ( AN ) including Phygelus and Hermogenes.

16 May the Lord show mercy to the household of Onesiphorus, ( AO ) because he often refreshed me and was not ashamed ( AP ) of my chains. ( AQ ) 17 On the contrary, when he was in Rome, he searched hard for me until he found me. 18 May the Lord grant that he will find mercy from the Lord on that day! ( AR ) You know very well in how many ways he helped me ( AS ) in Ephesus. ( AT )
